Test, Assessment and Ea!uati"n
Test is a method of measuring a persons ability, knowledge, or performance in a
given domain. Testing is done at the end of learning period, the result of test expressed by
mark, a grade or ratio. The test result of student is compared with each other. The example of
test is task, assignment, midterm test, ect.
There are some kinds of test: norm-referenced and criterion-referenced test; and
discrete-point and integrative testing. N"rm#re$eren%ed test is standardied test like the
!cholastic "ptitude Test #!"T$ or the Test of %nglish as a &oreign 'anguage #T(%&'$, the
score in this test organied as mean, median or standard deviation. The assessment in this test
based on performance of the test-taker. &riteri"n#re$eren%ed test is designed to give test-
takers feedback, and the assessment of this test based on certain criteria. 'is%rete#("int
testing is test that )ust involving certain component part of a language as the base of the
assessment, such as skills of listening, writing, reading and speaking. *hile integratie
testing can be cloe tests and dictations, it can include some component parts of a language
as the base of the assessment.
Assessment is different with test because assessment is an ongoing process that
encompasses a much wider domain. Test include into assessment because it is can be defined
as compilation of task and assignment. "ssessment it self involving the collection of
information or evidence of a learners progress or achievement over a period of time for the
purpose improving teaching and learning. "ssessment is done not based on one task or test, it
is done by looking some tests or tasks chronologically from the first task until the last task. +t
means that students are measured against his or her own starting point to know their
improvement.
There are some kinds of assessment: informal and formal assessment; and formative
and summative assessment. )n$"rma! assessment can happen directly and without using
procedure such as unplanned comments. (n the contrary, $"rma! assessment is systematic
and done by using procedure such as a test, all of test is formal assessment but not all formal
assessment is testing. Then, all kinds of informal assessment should be *"rmatie
assessment, so it can be comments, suggestion or call attention to an error of students. *hile,
summatie assessment typically occurs in the end of course or unit of instruction. +t aims to
measure and summarie what a student has grasped. +t can be daily test.
&rom some tests that compiled for viewed the progress to get the result of the
assessment, we can see the evaluation. Ea!uati"n is making an overall )udgment about ones
work or a whole schools work. !o, from the evaluation we can know succeed or not the
teaching and learning process is.
