PUBLIC SPEAKING SCRIPTS [THE RAINFORESTS]

A very good morning to the honorable judges, distinguished

guests, fellow students, ladies and gentlemen. Today I am going to
talk about The Rainforests.
RAINFORESTS.. What are Rainforests? A rain forest can be merely
defned as an everreen forest inhabitin a tro!ical reion" flled #ith a #ide
variety of !lants and animals" #ith an ann$al rainfall of at least %& inches.
Sim!ly s!ea'in" they are the richest" oldest" most !rod$ctive
ecosystems on Earth. (ioloist" Norman )yers" states *rainforests are the
fnest celebration of nat$re ever 'no#n to the !lanet*.
Ladies and gentlemen,
While rainforests may seem li'e a distant concern" these ecosystems
are critically im!ortant for o$r #ell+bein.
Rainforests are often called the l$ns of the !lanet for their role in
absorbin carbon dio,ide" reenho$se as" and !rod$cin o,yen.
Rainforests also stabili-e climate" ho$se incredible amo$nts of !lants
and #ildlife" and !rod$ce no$rishin rainfall all aro$nd the !lanet.
Ladies and gentlemen,
Rainforests hel stabili!e the worlds "limate by absorbin
carbon dio,ide from the atmos!here. Scientists have sho#n that e,cess
carbon dio,ide in the atmos!here from h$man activities is contrib$tin to
climate chane.
Therefore" livin rainforests have an im!ortant role in mitiatin
climate chane. Rainforests also a.ect local #eather conditions by creatin
rainfall and moderatin tem!erat$res.
Ladies and gentlemen,
Rainforests are home to a lare n$mber of the #orld/s !lants and
animals s!ecies" incl$din many endanered s!ecies. As forests are c$t
do#n" many s!ecies are doomed to e,tinction. )ost rainforest s!ecies can
s$rvive only in their nat$ral habitat.

Ladies and gentlemen,
The role of rainforests in the #ater cycle is to add #ater to the
atmos!here thro$h the !rocess of trans!iration 7in #hich !lants release
#ater from their leaves d$rin !hotosynthesis8.
This moist$re contrib$tes to the formation of rain clo$ds" #hich release
the #ater bac' onto the rainforest.
Ladies and gentlemen,
The roots of rainforest trees and veetation hel! anchor the soil. When
trees are c$t do#n there is no loner anythin to !rotect the ro$nd" and
soils are 9$ic'ly #ashed a#ay #ith rain. The !rocess of #ashin a#ay of soil
is 'no#n as erosion.
Ladies and gentlemen,
6eo!le have lon $sed forests as a so$rce of food" #ood" medicine" and
recreation. When forests are lost" they can no loner !rovide these reso$rces.
Rainforests !rovide m$ch more than life+savin medicines and
no$rishin fr$its. Rainforests are fo$nd in a variety of landsca!es. Rainforests
o.er o!!ort$nities for !hotora!hy" advent$re" fshin" hi'in" rela,ation"
bird #atchin and #ildlife s!ottin.
Ladies and gentlemen,
Rainforests are the #orld:s richest and most !rod$ctive ecosystems"
containin half of all livin s!ecies on the !lanet. ;et many of these
rainforest are destroyed every year.
We m$st reali-e that #e cannot forever destroy anythin #itho$t
!ayin the conse9$ences.
That is all. Thank you.
