Lear Christian Friends:
For nearly four months we have been in the States, to report to the Churches on our
first four years in the Amazon Valley. It has been our privilege to present the challenge
of the work to be done there for Christ to many Churches and interested people who had not
before had a part in this. We deeply appreciate your interest and hospitality.
Medical checkups showed nocesaity of a sinus operation and treatment for an ulcer, an
infection, and a tropical para.site. Most of this has been or is now beinf treated. We both
are feeling well and are regaining vitality, with all the good food and the cold weather,
which we don't have where we live in Brazil.
Luring the past, throe years our missionaries have begun together to publish the best
.Cunday School literature in Brazil. The commerttary by T/on DeWelt; "Acts,.('lade Actual", has
been translated into Portuguese, but could not be printed for lack oF-ro^^^^^lntavr'made
this a special projc-ct of thic furlough. The total cost wi.ll be 1900,00 to print 1000
copiea, ir:oludlng ail original setting up of the book. W?,en printed, this book '..'ill be
carried by all evangelical bookstores in Brazil, a;id will be an excellent means for spread-
i.ng Mow Testament principles of the Church. About .5900,00 still needed for this project.
In a Church we worked with for four years, two of the young men have been doing most
of tht2 preachin.g and teaching in our absence. They have grown much stronger spiritually,
s.nd show that the Church is becoming capable of carrying on without a minsionary always
pre.sent. This in the beauty and sti'ength of the New Testament simplicity cf the Church,
not hindered b}' dencnjinatlonai pecularities as well as Bible truth.
Letters from Brazilian.^ and missionaries in the Amazon Valley tell us the Churches
are malcing good progress. Plans are being made for radio work and more centralized work
of teaching and preaching in the city of Bo.leTn.
In our travels we have v?isited Platte Valley Bible College, Citicinnati Bible Seminary,
and Ozark Bible College for special weeks of Missions Emphasis. It is a thrill to see many
young people dedicate thecu.selves to missionary service.
Regular support- for the work we have to do for Christ in the Amazon Valley of Brazil
have discontinued their support, and we must replace this. Wr trust
that Cod will .'supply as He has for five years, every need, through Hia people and through
-fTic gjidanoo. We ask. you to continue in this work with U3.
Since last Soptoinber we .have had our return tickets, and plan to go baqii^^j,p Auiyimt to
live in tho same town, icoaraci, near Belem, on the south bank of the imazon'Hiver, abobt
150 miles south of the equator, in north Brazil.
V/e look forward to seeing many of you yet, in Camps, Churches, arid personal visits.
We are truly sorry that we can't visit ail of you! Bo please continue to pray for God's
.leading and help so that others nay know His truth!
leaae send us your 21? code!
Yours in Christ,

A BRIEF HISTORY
Before going to Brazil, where they arrived on. November
8,1959, David attended Ozark Bible College, where he received
the Th. B. degree in May, 1959.
Their Sponsoring Church is Ridgecrest Christian Church,
Albuquerque, New Mexico. This and many other Churches and
Christian Friends have made possible their support, which is
deeply appreciated.
The work with which they are cooperating in Brazil began
in 1952, and now includes four Churches, one other preaching
point, two primary schools, an orphanage. Para Bible Institute,
regular Men's Bible Classes, and Bible teaching in the homes.
Other families working in the same area include: Robert
L. Smith, Richard Robison, Paul Lanham, James Moreland,
Frank Horn, and Stan Wohlenhaus.
Brazil is a country of 70,000,000 people, larger than our
first 48 States, predominantly Roman Catholic, with constitu
tionally guaranteed religious freedom.
The Brazilian people are responsive to the Gospel, and the
Churches are showing steady progress in numerical growth
niul spiritual strength.

Dear Friends in Christ:
As quickly as possible we will be getting back into the work to be done in Brazil,
after arnvlng in Belem August 6th. Tiie Furlough we have just completed has been re
freshing in many ways. It certainly was wonderful to get to meet old friends again,
and to make many new ones in the many Churches we visited. It has been anything but a
vacation though, actually harder on us, health-wise, than working in Brazil.
As for the work in Brazil, there is more than ever to be done now. The Anti-Communist
revolution in April, and subsequent drive against corruption, should be a tremendous
boost to the;work of Christ.
The Radio Program which we have been needing should be under way very soon, and be a
few months old by year's end. The plan is to use it in conjunction with correspondence
courses by mail, to teach more people than we could reach otherifise. This should produce
greater results than we have seen in the past. All of our missionaries in the Amazon
Valley will be working together on this. If anyone or any group feels the desire to help
financially in this work, your contribution will be acknowledged specially for this.
An Evangelizing Center in downtown Belem has been acquired, and will be opened about the
first of September. We hope the nucleus for a new Church will come from it. This also
is requiring expenditure of more money, about $50.CX5 per month.
The Para Bible Institute has 5 students enrolled this year, which is about an average
of our hi^ and low enrollment since the school began full-time in 1961. We will be
working again with the Institute, training preachers and chiarch workers.
Both of the Churches in Icoaraci, the town we live in, have been growing during our
absence, which is encouraging. They have not been without American leadership, but
have not had it all the time in every service. One has grown from about 35 on Sunday
mornings to about 55, and the other from 35 to 45. The Churches usually have a larger
attendance in the evenings than in the mornings, if it is not raining. One of these
Churches has built a Baptistry and a new sidewalk, completely on its own, since offer
ings have increased as a result of revival in the Church. These are signs of better
growth and health in the Churches.
Money Hah been received for printing "Acts Made Actual", the Acts C<amientary, in the
Portuguese. We don't know when printing can start, but expect it soon. Only the
SI5OO.OO we requested has been received, but there is always a need to do much more
in this field. The Communists have been reaping in the field of literature in Brazil.
We could do the same. As do any worthwhile projects, this takes money.
More support financially still is needed. Some of you indicated you would begin helping
us upon our return to Brazil. Now is a good time to begin! God is blessing us, and we
pray that He will bless you in the work of the Church of Jesus Christ. Please pray for
Cod's guidance for His great work in Brazil and in the whole world!
Appreciated the items in Horizons along.
Faithfully yours in Christ,
David M. Bayless y
