service has continued
to grow and provides
more and more care
for people every year,
with more than 3300
patients receiving
support for the year
2013 to 2014. Not bad
considering during the
rst year of the service
the facilities were such
that just six people
received support.
Of course, to keep
up all of this work the
Hospice relies on the
support of charity-
fundraisers to bring
in funds and this is
where you can get
involved.
On this very special
anniversary year, St
Davids Hospice Care is
asking everyone to get
involved and help raise
much-needed funds.
There are lots
of ways you can
celebrate, including

abseils, the Admiral City

bereavement and the loss of

Helping children to
manage the impact of a
losing a loved-one, The
Unicorn Service works by
being open and honest
with children in a way that
they understand and can
comprehend.
The Unicorn Service works
in many ways, including
through schools links, family
projects, discussion and
activities as well as individual
work. Taking into account
age, cultural inuences and
the circumstances of the
bereavement, the dedicated
Unicorn Service team help
the child or young person
through their grief and
loss and help them to look
forward to the future and
create memories.
Any young person can
receive help from the Unicorn
Service they dont have to
have been related to a St.
Davids patient. Referrals can
be made from one of the St
Davids Nurse Specialists,
a family member, the GP,
school, social and well
being services, or even from
themselves.
St Davids needs to raise
money to keep this scheme
going in the future - its
undoubtedly one of their most
vital services and is run by a
small team.

Road stores are run by the same
three opticians, Jason Williams, who
has been with Specsavers in Newport since
1991, Craig MacKenzie and Andrew Bowers,
both of whom came on board when the new
Spytty Road store opened in 2012.
The advantage of each Specsavers store
being locally owned is that you have the
optician proprietors working within each
store week in week out, leading their teams
to provide the high levels of customer service

charity of the year, St Davids Hospice Care.
We are big fans of the guys at St Davids and we
hold great admiration for the work they do, which is
why we are asking you to scoff loads of cake

St Davids is asking people across south east
Wales to hold a #care4cake coffee morning to help
raise funds for the charity. It doesnt have to be
anything grand or lavish, it can be a coffee morning

Hi Im Daniel Mead and I am one of the Asset Management and
Leasing team members at Queensberry Real Estate. I am a chartered
surveyor with in excess of 10 years experience of working on the day
to day commercial elements of shopping centres and retail property
across the UK.
A large amount of my current time is spent working on the
Friars Walk development in Newport, presenting the development to
retailers and property agents and working up the commercial terms of
new lettings ahead of the opening of the centre in autumn 2015. Im
frequently down on site, encouraging perspective tenants to take a look
at construction and our marketing suite has magnificent views of the
site and the revitalised riverfront area. All our visitors comment about
the great views we have of the city and are really impressed with the
progress.
QRE has recently announced the deal with New Look and is in
the process of negotiating and finalising new lettings to further exciting
operators ahead of announcing them to the public soon.
I work with national leasing agents Strutt and Parker and Lunson
Mitchenall to assist me in this role. This month, however, we are
proud to announce that a third joint agent has joined the Friars Walk
team, Cooke & Arkwright. Cooke & Arkwright is based in Cardiff and
partner, Huw Thomas, will be leading the instruction.
QRE recognises the heightened contribution that local partners
can make to the development and regeneration of a city centre such as
Newport. It is incredibly important that we win the hearts and minds
of Newports catchment shopping population ahead of our opening
date in autumn 2015 and engagement on this level can be helped by
working side by side with the local community where we can.
Elsewhere on the project for example we work with Icon Creative
Designs in Newport on all of our marketing and design production
work Gemellis and Bar Piazza both Newport-based restaurants
have provided the catering at some our marketing events and we
have even used local Newport band, Nothing North of Alaska on
our development fly-through that can be viewed on the Friars Walk
website.
I hope that similar efforts at local engagement, alongside
construction progress on site and the previous and future retailer
announcements will ensure that shoppers from Newport and the wider
customer catchment return to the city centre in droves when we open
next year.

hen I rst heard of the Face Mapping
skin analysis facial it really caught my
interest! My skin is all over the shop;
dry in some places, oily in others, so I thought
this is worth investigating and booked myself an
appointment at Taje, Temple of Beauty in Malpas.
When I arrived I was greeted by the lovely
Melissa who explained to me the process of Face
Mapping. Its a Dermalogica treatment to reveal
your skin condition, as well as the products most
effective at delivering all-over skin health. Well, that
sounded good to me!
So, she got to work by gently examining
each part of my face. The results were that my
cheeks, forehead and chin were dehydrated.
With this in mind Melissa chose the appropriate
products and started pre-cleansing my face. She
then cleansed my face again with UltraCalming
cleanser to make sure my face was completely
clean of makeup. After that Melissa exfoliated
my face with Daily Microfoliant to unclog my
pores. An oatmeal masque was applied to my
face once the exfoliator was removed. This was
left on for 10 minutes. This smelt so yummy. I must
add that the brushes Melissa used to apply the
products were ever so soft and added to the whole
relaxing experience. I was then treated to a deep,
soothing face massage which really ironed out the
stresses of the day. After almost falling asleep due
to Melissas magic ngers it was time for my face to
be moisturised, using Dermalogicas Barrier Repair,
to shield against moisture loss. Finishing up, my
face received more moisturising with Super Sensitive
Shield, this one acts as a primer and protects your
skin from the UV rays.
When I looked in the mirror my face was

Terms and conditions for the 1,000 wedding competition: The closing date for entries is January 15, 2015, at 5pm. The 1,000 prize will be distributed in cheque form made payable directly to a Voice wedding retailer. A Voice wedding retailer is an advertiser
who has advertised within the September 2014, October 2014, November 2014, December 2014 or January 2015 edition of the magazine. This amount can be paid in up to ten cheques to the value of 1,000 in total. Cheques must total whole amounts, eg:
100 not 99.99. The winner can choose to spend the 1,000 however they choose towards their wedding or civil partnership, i.e.: outts, cake, hen night, venue, etc. There is no cash alternative, and the prize will not be given directly to the winning couple all
cheques will be made payable to the wedding retailer, who must supply us with an invoice prior to the cheque being presented. You must be getting married in 2015 between April 1 and December 31 2015. The winner will be decided by the Voice team, and

3. GARLANDS
Flowers, owers everywhere! If your wedding is to take
on just one trend this year, then this is probably the
easiest. Beautiful garlands are considered the height
of matrimonial fashion this year. Incorporate them
anywhere over the back of chairs, in your hair, as table
centrepieces, over doorframes be imaginative!
4. HASHTAG YOUR DAY
Ok, so lots of your guests will be snapping away
throughout the day, posting pics on Instagram, Facebook
and Twitter, so why not take advantage and ask them to
use a specic hashtag so that you can share your day
with friends and family who might not have been able to
make it?
Simply buy a few small chalkboards and place then
strategically around your venue with your hashtag, or
even, if youre that well organised, add it to your wedding

5. FORMAL PORTRAITS
In recent years the trend for formal wedding portraits
has died off somewhat, with quirky shots and more

O
ffering a range of individual handmade
items, retro furniture and home acces-
sories, Jan also converts old furniture into
unique, one-of-a-kind pieces, which are on sale at
the store and is available to offer advice on your
own upcycling projects.
I started upcycling furniture completely
by accident, Jan told us. I coloured
the chairs surrounding our
display table to brighten the
place up and the very next
day people went mad for
them, asking if they were
for sale!
After the success of
the chairs, I guess you
could say I caught the crea-
tive bug. I especially love the
feeling of bringing something
old and disused back to life.
Im lucky to come from a creative
family. My partner is a joiner, my daughters an
interior designer and my son is excellent with
computers.
Jan visits many auction houses to find classic
and interesting pieces of furniture that could do
with a bit of love, regularly taking trips with her
daughter to select key items.
Last May we introduced Annie Sloan
CHALKPAINTSTM to the store. The great thing
about these wonderful paints is that you dont need
to prep the furniture you intend to paint, plus you
can use it directly on almost any surface, including
wood, metal, plastic and even concrete theyre so
versatile!
Moving forward, Jan will be holding various
workshops at the store on selected Sundays,
where she will teach groups of up to
seven people how to use Annie
Sloan paint, starting with a basic
techniques workshop and interior
design classes.
Furniture is priced from 20
upwards and includes many,
many items for every room
in the home such as mirrors,
sewing boxes, dressers, chairs
and tables. Annie Sloan paints are
available in a wide range of colours,
priced at 18.95 for a 1 litre tin.
Jan also rents space out to local crafters
and artisans and already has a variety of conces-
sions showcasing a wide range of handmade gifts,
needlecraft, jewellery, foodstuffs and preserves.
Local artist Sonja Beer also has a few select
pieces for sale at The Umbrella Project. The shop
is constantly being updated.

As a social enterprise

ment, training and volun-

working in partnership with
local schools, making

children to learn to plants,

school grounds.
The Wood Store
recently moved from

The Riverfront Theatre and Arts Centre
hosts a contemporary Christmas market
and exhibition throughout November.
Open Monday to Saturday, the event will
showcase local artists and crafters from
across South Wales offering an excellent
opportunity to stock up on quirky and
stylish gifts and goodies. The event aims
to combine a gallery experience with a
retail element and with items priced from
just a few pounds through to several
hundred.
Sellers and exhibitors include small
businesses including Hey There Bear
Designs selling tote bags, prints and

landscape pictures as well as jewellery

Getting The Very Best
Out Of Your Child
T
o heck with health and safety madness this
autumn its time to get outside and play
conkers.
Of course, like all good games there are a few
tricks that you can pull from up your sleeve to ensure
your place as the conker champion of all the world!
Here are some:
The best conkers are hard, symmetrical and not
cracked. To test for the hardest conkers, plop them in
a bucket of water damaged ones will float but the
healthiest, hardest will sink to bottom so pick these!
To make your conker even harder, bake it in the
oven for a short while (but dont let it go wrinkly).
Soaking in vinegar also hardens it up the same
happens if you soak it in salt water.
It could be seen as cheating, but you could paint
your conker with clear nail varnish or roll it in hand
cream. You could also freeze it, or plan ahead and
keep your conkers in a dark place until next year,
giving it a whole year to harden!

he Newport City Homes (NCH) Residents
Festival 2014 will be held at the Newport
Centre on Saturday 11 October, from
11am to 3pm. NCH are holding this event
in partnership with Derwen Cymru, Charter
Housing, House Swap Wales, Swap 2 Sell, Linc
and Melin Homes.
The theme of this years festival is health
and wellbeing and there will be stalls giving
advice on smoking cessation, healthy eating,
sports massage, exercising, gym membership and
much, much more.
Those attending can try their hand at
whittling, making their own smoothie by riding
the smoothie bike, watching healthy eating
cookery demonstrations or taking part in a gentle
exercise class. A free goodie bag will be given to
all who take part in a short survey on the day.
There will also be a free prize draw for every
resident who brings their invitation with them to
the festival. Everybody is welcome and if you
dont have an invite you still get a chance to enter
the prize draw by filling a stamp card on the day!

spectacular fireworks display.

5th November, Whiteheads will be hosting its annual fireworks

the haunted orangery to carve your own pumpkin
make up your own ghoulish design, scoop out the goo and

Get stuck in with batty biscuit decorating in the Great

deliver a regional adoption service
throughout the South East Wales
area.
WHAT IS ADOPTION?
Adoption is a way of giving a child
a forever family in circumstances
where they are not able to remain
with their birth parents. Adoption
is a process in which the legal
parental rights are permanently
transferred to the adoptive parents.
Who are the children waiting for
adoption?
The children who need adoptive
families are on average between
nine months to seven years old.
There are single children as well as
sibling groups that need adoptive
placements where they can grow
up together. Not being able to find
adoptive placements for sibling
groups may mean that brothers and
sisters may be separated.
WHO CAN ADOPT?
Adoption is open to more than
you might think; you dont have
to be married, own your home or
be financially well off. Adoption
is open to single applicants, gay,
lesbian and transgender applicants
and theres no age limit to who can
adopt. The most important attribute
of an adopter is the capability to
provide children with a loving and
stable home for them to grow and
reach their full potential.

Festival is delighted to

from the Catering Platoon
of 1st Battalion The Rifles
(1 RIFLES) to participate
in the Monmouthshire Food
Festival. 1 RIFLES is based in
Beachley Barracks, Chepstow
and is part of 160 (Wales)
Brigade.
During the festival you
will be able to see live shows
throughout the day, including
plenty of suggestions for busy
working parents to conjure up
nutritionally balanced meals
that wont break the bank.
The chefs will work from an
Operation Field Kitchen as
they would when deployed on
exercise or operations, using
military rations supplemented
with local produce. The chefs
will also be able to answer all
your catering questions and
perhaps dispel a few myths.
So come along, see the
chefs at work, taste some of
the recipes that soldiers get on
the front line and maybe get
some culinary inspiration.

Its around 4pm on a sunny
Tuesday afternoon and Im sat
at a table in Parc Pantry. The
place is filled with parents with
their children, who have popped
in for a tasty treat on their way
home from school.
As I wait for my order, of
co-owner Antonys speciality
crme brle coffee and also a
steak and red wine pie-in-a-box,
I glance around this lovely deli
style shop and notice lots of
quirky and stylish items to buy.
Hanging from exposed
wooden beams in the ceiling are
wonderful illustrated lamp-
shades, shelves on the walls are
full of cable and cotton lighting,
as well as cushions and stylised
mugs, theres a pot by the door
packed with patterned umbrel-
las, and the main table is full of
delicious cakes and savouries,
and plenty of fresh bread.
After a few minutes of look-
ing at all the cool things that are
placed all over the store, my pie
and coffee arrives, and my god,
the pie smells AMAZING!
I quickly peel the sticker
with a smiley face off the box
to reveal a glorious, piping-hot
pie, covered in rich onion gravy,
crispy onions and mature ched-
dar cheese.
Im a massive pie and pasty
lover, and this steak and red
wine piece of heaven, has
to be one of the best Ive ever
tried! Lovely pastry and full to
the brim with thick juicy pieces
of steak!
Now, Im not really a fan of
coffee, Id much prefer a lovely
cup of sweet milky tea, and once
I told co-owner Matt this he rec-
ommended that I try Anthonys
crme brle coffee.
Matt was completely right, I
simply had to try this amazing
coffee and I recommend it to
anyone who visits Parc Pantry,
phenomenal coffee. Anthony
also makes a mint mocha, which
I will definitely try the next time
I visit, maybe with a differ-
ent flavour pie or one of their
Belgian waffles.
Make sure you pop in and try
some of their amazing foods and
drinks, and also why not browse
their fabulous gift and home-
ware selection.

THE COACH AND HORSES
T
he kitchen is run by executive chef Adam OShea,
along with head chef Chris Uden. Both are very
passionate cooks, each having their own unique and
signature style.
Autumn is my favourite season for cooking, Adam
told us. All the root vegetables are back in season they
are always great for roasting, plus there are lots more
gamey meats readily available, perfect for making pies
and casseroles. Venison is a particular favourite of mine.
One of the most popular dishes last year was our trio
of pork, which is back on the menu for this year too, along
with more meat trios, including game, beef and lamb.
Adam and Chris have created a whole host of
wonderful comfort foods to warm the cockles this
October.
Dishes on The Coach and Horses autumn menu
include chicken breast stuffed with sundried tomatoes and
fresh olives, served with dauphinois potatoes with a herb
oil, for 11.95; chump of lamb with potato fondant, rustic
ratatouille and vegetable crisps for 12.95; and an epic
16oz handmade beef burger served with lots of hand cut
chips and freshly made onion rings for 11.95. Theres
also a choice of extra toppings to choose from at just 50p
extra.
As well as fantastic new menu choices, the pub now
serves a superb money-saving meal deal which offers two
courses for just 10. This special set menu is available
every lunchtime from noon until 2pm, and from 6pm to
7pm in the evening from Monday to Thursday. Dishes on
this menu include 5oz gammon, homemade lasagne, and
fresh scampi.
Sunday lunch is extremely popular at The Coach and
Horses and is served in two sittings, one at noon and the
second at 2pm. Each course is individually priced, starting
at 8.95 for one course and 14.95 for three. There is also
smaller portion available at 4.95 for younger diners.
Booking is advised for Sunday lunch as the restaurant fills
very quickly.
The Coach and Horses Christmas Fayre menu is now

1st up until Christmas Eve.

Last October Tin Shed Theatre Co.
brought Newport The Ritual. People
who went to it took to Twitter and
claimed it to be the most horrifying
thing theyd ever seen, one reviewer
called it utterly terrifying.
This October theyre back with
Leviticus and promise it will be
even more unsettling; Tin Shed are
pushing the boundaries of immersive
performance and horror theatre even
further than before.
Leviticus, which is being directed
by Tin Sheds Antonio Rimola, invites
only four audience members at a time
into an as-of-yet undisclosed location.
This lucky (or unlucky) four will then
be asked to take part in an act of
purity and evil.
Theyre not giving a lot away
right now, but judging by last years
Halloween performance its sure to be
an experience youll never forget.
Leviticus will run from October
28th to November 2nd at times from
6.30pm to 11pm. Each performance
lasts around 35 minutes and booking
in advance is essential as tickets

Dead Funny is a tragic-comedy
about impotence, sex therapy
and the English sense of humour.
Set in the early 90s, the play
centres on a group of hero-
worshipping neighbours, fixated
on British comedians of the variety
theatre. The dwindling members of
the Dead Funny Society prepare a
wake for Benny Hill. From this unlikely
premise springs a play written
unashamedly for adults and asking the
age-old question: what is funny?

For its 2014 Christmas pantomime Blackwood
Miners Institute will be presenting Rainbow Valley
Productions adaptation of the enchanting fairy tale
Cinderella. It runs from Wednesday 10 Wednesday 31
December.
With a multi-talented cast led by Wales number one
comedian and BBC Wales broadcaster Owen Money, you
can guarantee that the show will be packed with first-class
singing and dancing, and that little bit of magic that all the
very best family pantomimes are sprinkled with.
The beautiful Cinderella is bullied by her two Ugly
Sisters. Cinders future looks bleak until her Fairy
Godmother casts a spell and transforms her from a poor
servant girl to a radiant beauty and sends her to the
ball! She flees at midnight, leaving behind a single glass
slipper, how will the handsome Prince Charming ever find
her?
Will Buttons, Cinders loyal protector, manage to stop
creating comical chaos and reveal his true feelings to
Cinderella?
Will Cinders find love and happiness in everyones
favourite rag to riches fairytale?
Expect lots of fun and laughter in this magical show. Its
filled with all the traditional elements that we all know and
love including musical numbers, slap-stick comedy and, of
course, bags of audience participation!
