Vocational Situation in Vietnam
Lack of Skilled Labor – an Obstacle of Industrialization
• 80% of labor force have not been trained
of vocational skills
• Over 50% of labor force in foreign Stages of Catching‐up Industrialization
invested enterprises are unskilled
• 90% of exported workers are vocationally
unskilled
• Labor force annually increases 200,000
people in average, 50% of them do not
graduate from high schools
• EPZs and IZs in HCMC need 300,000
skilled workers until 2010 and demand‐
oriented training is needed
• 25% of TVET graduates did not satisfy the

Introduction
Who We Are
• The first private‐owned vocational college in
Vietnam offering international accredited
training courses
• Commenced operation in 2007 with 4
accredited courses from Box Hill Institute of
TAFE (Australia):
– Engineering – Welding and Fabrication
– Electrotechnology System Electrician
– Refrigeration and Air Conditioning
– Automotive Mechanical Technology
• It will expand curriculum in 2010 to include:
– Building and Construction
– Hospitality
– Industrial Maintenance courses
• The college has over 300 students in various Modern 4‐hectare training facility to
stages of their apprenticeships accommodate 1,000 students at any time

Experience
Apprenticeship Scheme with Strategic Marine Vietnam
• Pioneered and funded by Strategic Marine
• 55 Vietnamese undertake a course in a
range of specialized shipbuilding skills
• Developed by Strategic Marine in
conjunction with HLIVC
• Adapted from similar programs currently
operating in Australia
• Designed to give trainees theoretical and
practical experience needed to become
skilled welders, fabricators, electricians and
refrigeration specialists
• Apprentices live at HLIVC for the first 3
months. Then, they gain practical working
experience 4 days at the yard and continue
studies at HLIVC 1 day per week.
