The “Integration of climatic variability and change into national strategies to implement the ICZM Protocol in the Mediterranean” project (“ClimVar & ICZM”) is a collective effort to promote the use of Integrated Coastal
Zone Management (ICZM) as an effective tool to deal with the impacts of climate variability and change in coastal zones in countries sharing the Mediterranean.

The Integration of climatic variability and change into
national strategies to implement the ICZM Protocol in the Mediterranean project (ClimVar & ICZM) is a collective efort to promote the use of Integrated Coastal Zone Management (ICZM) as an efective tool to deal with the impacts of climate variability and change in coastal zones in countries sharing the Mediterranean, by mainstreaming them into the Integrated Coastal Zone Management process. WHAT THE CLIMVAR & ICZM PROJECT IS TRYING TO ACHIEVE The 2014 Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) Report identifed the Mediterranean region as a climate change hotspot that will sufer multiple stresses and systemic failures due to climate changes. This project aims to support the participating countries to access climate change/variability assessments, data tools and methods required to develop the most cost-efective ICZM measures to protect coastal communities and resources from the threats posed by climate variability and change. More specifcally, the objectives of the project are: Integration of climatic variability and change into national strategies to implement the ICZM Protocol in the Mediterranean & ClimVar ICZM visit To fnd out more themedpartnership.org To strengthen knowledge on regional impacts of climate variability and change and to defne their specifc characteristics in the Mediterranean region To strengthen partnerships, improve capacity building and establish mechanisms for exchange of data and information for integration of climate variability and change into concrete ICZM policies, plans and programmes. MAJOR OUTPUTS OF THE PROJECT DONORS & PARTNERS Information and data gathering Assessment of regional and national programs for monitoring, and tracking climate variability and change and its impacts Regional consensus on a mechanism for sharing data on climate variability and change Development of an online multi-country Information Sharing Platform on climate variability and change monitoring data in coastal areas In-depth analysis of climate variability impacts Regional Assessment of the consequences of climate variability and change for ecosystems and human activities Implementation of models and tools to assess environmental and socioeconomic impacts and evaluate response options in two coastal areas in Croatia and Tunisia Capacity building and integration of the climate dimension into ICZM planning Development of a methodology and tools for mainstreaming climate variability and change considerations into national ICZM planning and practices Development of an Integrated Management Plan in the Sibenik-Knin coast in Croatia and integration of the climate dimension in Coastal Plans in Algeria and Montenegro Building capacity and advancing policy dialogue in participating countries on climate variability and change Regional assessment of Climate Change Adaptation for Mediterranean Coastal Zones and integration into policies and plans The ClimVar & ICZM project is led by UNEP/MAP and is fnancially supported by the Global Environment Facility (GEF) and all participating countries. The total budget of the Project is 9.2 million USD. Out of it, the Global Environment Facility (GEF) contributes 2.2 million, while the remaining amount of 7 million USD is from the participating countries, executing agencies, and donors. Participating countries: Albania, Algeria, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Egypt, Libya, Morocco, Montenegro, Palestine, Syria and Tunisia. The executing partners of the project are: PAP/RAC, Plan Bleu/RAC and GWP-Med. To fnd out more visit www.themedpartnership.org Brijuni National Park Abdelkhalek Labbize
