National Seafarers Sunday
T
oday is the twenty-sixth Sunday in
Ordinary Time. Todays Gospel from
St. Matthew tells us the story of two
sons who were requested by their father to
go to his vineyard. The first said he will not
go but in the end, he did; while the second
said he will go, but in the end, did not.
Have you encountered a similar
situation in your daily life? Who would
know what would happen in the last two
minutes? Or, have you, at one time, found
yourself at the crossroads, where you are
made to decide to be or not to be?
Which of the two brothers did what
their father wanted?
Let me share it with you the lessons I
have personally learned from this gospel.
First: Say what you mean and mean
what you say. Before giving our answers
to certain questions, we must discern first
which of these is good and in accordance

to Gods Will. If there is one value we need
to cultivate in ourselves, that is the value
of discernment. If caught in the middle
of some situation, say what you mean and
mean what you say. Whatever comes out of
our mouth determine who we are and how
people would look at us. This is more so
with persons who are in charge of forming
or molding other people, especially the
young. As parents, teachers and all other
formators, we have to be careful in setting
the right example to our students. We have
to walk our talk.
Second: As we ponder on certain
decisions to make, let us pay attention to
the little whispering in us, the voice of God
- our conscience. Let us not set aside our
conscience for it helps us determine which
is good and which is bad. If we think we
are doing our work good enough, let us
not stop there. We try to think and look
for ways how we can be more efficient and
how we can improve ourselves. In other
words, let us not be mediocre, rather, let
us strive to give our best. Remember, we
are all called to be perfect for our Heavenly
Father is perfect.
Third: The time is now! Once we realize
something needs to be done, then, let us not
postpone it. The right time is now! Why?
What happens if we delay? Our enthusiasm
slowly dies out. So, our original thoughts
and considerations may be diminished in
quality and quantity. Worse is when we
have identified what we are supposed to do
and we die without doing them, then, we
can only bite our elbow. So, let us always
remember - the time is NOW!
What happens if we ar able to discern
and say what we mean and mean what we
say after much discernment and listening
to the little voice of my conscience? Then,
we will be better understood, and perhaps
,we can eliminate miscommunication. That
is why, we must always strive to do good
now; we might miss it if we do not.
If we come to terms with all these,
perhaps we may find beauty inside and out
of ourselves and of others.

than a Teleserye!
Reminiscing the Past at Jaro

ho will not get thrilled with what
is happening in the teleserye,
Sana Bukas Pa ang Kahapon? Yes,
I must admit that I am one of those who
follow the teleserye either on television or
in the internet. Excitement also swells up
in me while I follow the TV series Merlin
which I download and save on my phone.
But I catch myself stirred up sometimes!
Do I feel thrilled, excited and enthusiastic
with what is happening in the parish in
the same way that I feel excited when I
watch these TV series? If I can imagine the
possibilities that would happen in the life
of the characters in the teleserye, do I try
to sit down and imagine with enthusiasm
what will happen to the different pastoral
ministries that I handle in the parish, and
strive to make them happen?
Yes, our parish life can be like a
teleserye. It has a lot of drama, comedy,
suspense and action. But what makes our

pa nga nakabulig man ini sa inyo agod
magsanyog pa gid ang inyo paghangop sa
matuod nga pagkabuhi nga balaan paagi sa
pagkamatinumanon sa mga Sugo sang Dios.
Sa amo man nga tion, wala ko man
ginpabayaan ang mga bagay kag mga isyu
nga may daku nga kaangtanan sa kabuhi
sang parokya. Tungod kay ang Candlelight
amo ang labing epektibo nga paagi agod nga
mapalambot sa inyo ihibalo ang mga butang
nga dapat ninyo mahibaloan, luwas sa mga
balita, mga opinyon kag mga pamalandong
nga sa masunson inyo mabasahan sa aton
semanal nga pahayagan, ara man ang
nagapadayon nga report nahanungod
sa nagakatabo sa parokya, pareho abi sa
pagpakaayo sang aton kombento.
Masulod na sa tatlo ka bulan halin sa
ginsugoran ini nga proyekto. Kag sa halos
tagsa ka isyu sang Candlelight halin sang
Hulyo 28 sang ginlunsar ang proyekto, may
lainlain nga mga sinulat nga may kaangtanan
sini ang inyo nabasahan. May ara nga
nagpabutyag sang ila eksperyensya samtang
sila nagpuyo sa kombento; may ara man
nga naghatag sing panugyan kon ano ang
nagakadapat nga ilakip sa sini nga building;
may ara man nga mga paathag kon ano gid
parish life different from the teleserye we
watch is that we are the characters, and
real life characters at that, and theres no
definite plot. We are not just spectators but
each of us has a role to play, a script to make
and an action to demonstrate. Just as the
whole teleserye has many parts or chapters,
our story as a parish has many parts as well,
and the amazing fact is that the ending of
our story depends on our collective efforts
and participation.
Now, our parish life story is on the
chapter of reconstructing our parochial
house. Since the start of the project
last July, we have witnessed how many
of us played an active role in helping
toward the realization of this project. It
is so amazing how many of us have been
generous in sharing our resources for this
endeavour. With this, our parochial house
reconstruction continues without the fear
of losing funds, not only because all of us are

cooperating and doing our part, but mainly
because our Blessed Mother is always there
to help us and God never ceases providing
us with what we need.
Of course, while we continue to embark
on this project, we have not forgotten
to maximize our efforts in the different
ministries of our parish.
Our Parish Worship Ministry attends
to the formation of our ushers and actively
ministers to the sick and the elderly through
its Ministry for the Sick. The Ministry of
Arimatheans is being established and
strengthened and will minister to the dead
and their bereaved families.
Our Education Ministry is faithful in
facilitating Adult Faith Formation every
Friday and Saturday, in Sunday School
Catechesis and Catechesis in the different
elementary schools,] and in Jaro National
High School. Our parish catechists have their

n 1958, I was appointed by Msgr. Ciceron
A. Martirez (commonly called as PCAM)
as assistant fiscal to Roberto Tyo Itok
Pastrana (personally I dont know why the
secretary of the parish is called fiscal before).
Prior to this assignment, I was already active
in the parish as an acolyte and member of
the choir back in the days of Msgr. Melecio
Fegarido, then parish priest. Our office was
exactly howit is at present. Immediately after
the front main door was the hallway where
the stairs was located going upstairs to the
residence of the priests. The living room and
meeting hall were both downstairs at the left
side of the convent.
In 1962, Bishop Juan Nilmar became the
parish priest and he appointed me as the new
parish secretary. The major project of Bishop
Nilmar was the construction of the twin belfry
of the Cathedral. (Dumduman ko pa sang
ginsugo ako ni Msgr. Nilmar nga magbagting
sang lingganay sa kampanaryo nga sadto ara
pa sa idalum. Ginguripat niya ako kay indi

uilding Together is the slogan, I believe, of the retrofitting and
construction project of the old building we fondly called - the Convento.
Eversince the project started, we hear and read it being called by several
names like, Convent, Rectory, Parochial House, Parochial Office,Parish Rectory, Jaro
Parish Convent, etc. I wonder if we can come up with one official name, so as not to
make our parishioners a little puzzled? And also, with an official name we can be
more focused, like for example - Building Together- The Jaro Parish Rectory. Just

bala ang tawag diri? Kombento? Balay
sang Parokya? Parish Rectory? Jaro Parish
Convent? Parochial Office? Parochial
House? Ang tagsulat sini nga obserbasyon
nagapanugyan nga kuntani tawgon na lang
ini sa isa ka ngalan agod nga indi na magdulot
sing pagsalangisag para sa mga tumoluo.
Sa akon bahin, maayo gid nga may ara nga
nagpaninguha sa pagpadangat sang iya
kabalaka, agod nga mangin simple na lang
ang aton pagsinalayo, kag nagapasalamat gid
ako sing daku sa naghatag sini nga panugyan.
Bilang sabat sa sina nga obserbasyon, ayhan

Sa sini nga Domingo, aton ginasaulog ang
National Seafarers Day. Ginadumdom naton
ang mga kautoran naton nga nagapanakayon
sa kadagatan nga nagasakay ukon nagaobra
sa mga sakayan pangdagat. Malayo sila sa
ila pamilya kag gani upod sa kabudlay sang
pagtrabaho, ara man ang pagkahidlaw nga
ila ginabatyag para sa ila mahal sa kabuhi.
Updan naton sila sa aton pangamuyo agod
nga magpadayon sila nga mabakod sa pagtuo
kag mapahilayo sa katalagman. Nabatian
naton ukon nahibaloan ang mga wala
ginapaabot nga mga hitabo samtang ara ang
mga barko ukon mga sakayan pangdagat sa
tunga sang lawod. Kabay pa nga magpabilin
sila nga hilway sa katalagman. Indi man
naton pagkalimtan ang ila mga pamilya nga
ari diri nabilin sa aton tunga. Indi hamak
ang ila pagkatublag kag kapung-aw para
sa ila mga pinalangga nga nagapanakayon.
Importante ka tama nga mabatyagan sang
mga panimalay sang aton mga seafarers ang
aton suporta para sa ila nga nagakahangawa
para sa kaayohan sang ila pinalangga nga
malayo sa ila luyo.

Sa Ebanghelyo sa sini nga Domingo,
ginaagda kita sa pagkamatinumanon sa sugo
sang Dios. Magtuman kita sa iya kabubut-on
kay Sia amo ang aton Amay nga nagahigugma
sa aton, kag indi aton Agalon nga dapat
naton alagaron. Ang sugo sang Amay para
sa aton kaayohan; ang sugo sang Agalon
para sa kaayohan sang Agalon. Kon sang
una, nagsiling kita nga Huo sa aton Amay,
magpadayon kita sa pagkamatinumanon.
Kon sang una, nagsiling kita nga Indi,
may panahon pa nga magkambio kita
sing panghunahona kag magsunod sa iya
kabubut-on.
In 1967, Msgr. Jaime L. Sin was appointed
auxiliary bishop and parish priest of Jaro. His
assistants were then Fr. Alberto Piamonte, Fr.
Gene Velarde (now Msgr., our Parish Priest),
and Fr. Ever Cansancio. Msgr. Sin started the
reconstruction of the convent, but business
in the office went on smoothly despite the
on-going construction upstairs. Everybody
was very busy that time raising funds for the
construction, and we, on our part, helped too
by holding daigon to help in the construction.
In 1972, Msgr. Piamonte succeeded
Msgr. Sin. It was during his time when the
Holy Father came to visit Iloilo in February
1981. The image of Our Lady of Candles was
taken down from her original place, when
the Holy Father crowned her. I was one of
the members of the Knights of Columbus 4th
Degree Color Guard as security at the grounds
of the Cathedral, so I was very near to actually
see the Holy Father. That was the greatest
religious event that took place, witnessed by
everybody in whole of Western Visayas.
For some time, I was alone in
the office as parish
secretary. Because of the heavy workload, there
were times when I had to ask my son to go to
the City Hall for the registration of the marriage
certificates. I had to bring home some records
to sort out. Later, Pol Subong was assigned to
assist me in the office.
In 1989, Msgr. Jose M. Gamboa became the
parishpriest of JaroParish. WhenMsgr. Gamboa
appointed me Minister of the Holy Communion,
I was able to visit more than 20 sick people
every Friday. Aside fromthat, I also used to lead
the Perpetual Help novena every Wednesday,
and the Santo Nio and Sacred Heart Novenas
on Friday. Msgr. Gamboa was the last boss I
served as parish secretary of Jaro Cathedral. I
had a stroke first in April 1997 and another one
in 1998. So, I was forced to retire.

Here I am, sixteenyears after my last stroke, still
strong at eighty years old.

hocked by the realization that of
many of our leaders have become
the cause of our peoples problems,
a multi-talented layman businessman,
lawyer, and writer - realized that doing
business or writing books was not
enough for him to make a difference in
our country.
Before a jam-packed gathering that
overflowed from the St. John Paul II
Hall to the gardens of the Archbishops
Residence in Iloilo City, Atty. Alex Lacson
moved the audience with clear facts and
figures so that each citizen can do his
part to fight the Pork Barrel system and
the dominance of Political Dynasties.
The Archdiocese of Jaro, through
the Commission on Laity, launched
its own local endeavour in support
of the Peoples Initiative Against
Pork Barrel (PIAP) on September 19,
2014, at the St. John Paul II Hall in the
Archbishops Residence by inviting Atty.
Lacson, Chairman of the Solidarity for
Transformation Philippines, as its main
speaker and resource person.
In his talk, Lacson began by showing
in clear terms the wide gap between
the rich and the poor in our society. He
cited, among other data, the National
Statistical Coordination Boards (NSCB)
finding that 80% of the countrys
wealth is in the hands of only 5% of the
population.
While the P-Noy Administration
has been boasting of unprecedented
economic growth, Lacson asks, Who
benefitted from the economic growth in
the last seven years? Citing Dr. Cielito
Habito, a former NEDA Director and a
columnist of a national daily, the guest
speaker said that 76% of the 6.8%
growth in the economy benefitted only
the top 40 richest families.
Why then, Lacson asked, is
economic growth not enjoyed by the
poor or, in fact, by the majority of people
in the country?

Political Dynasties and Pork Barrel are the Biggest
Corruptors of our Country PIAP convenor
The obvious answer, according to Lacson,
is too much graft and corruption fomented by
political dynasties. He estimated that there are
about 200 political families who control the
Philippine government.
Political dynasties are the biggest corruptors
in our country, Lacson said.
Political dynasties feast of Pork Barrel funds,
It is Lacsons belief that if we abolish the
Pork Barrel system, political dynasties will
considerably decrease by about 50% and we can
win back Congress to the people and be able to
pass good laws.
He cited the dismal performance of the
Legislature by citing the fact that in 2013, in spite
of having billions of pesos in its budget, Congress
passed only one law of national significance. In
2012, he said, Congress passed only four laws of
national scope, the first of which was to declare
the Malunggay as the National Vegetable!
Just to put some humor, but to clearly
illustrate the reality of our countrys depressing
state of affairs, Lacson quipped, In other
countries stealing of public funds is against the
law that, if committed, would bring
shame to the culprit and his family. In
the Philippines, stealing of public funds
is official use only or, we can add, a
family business.
Msgr. Meliton Oso, Director of Jaro
Archdiocesan Social Action Center
(JASAC), clarified that the Peoples
Initiative has no partisan political color.
It welcomes everyone or any group that
has as its interest to serve the common
good. Quoting Pope Francis, he said,
Politics, according to the social doctrine
of the Church, is one of the highest forms
of charity, because it serves the common
good.
In a note of encouragement Jaro
Archbishop Angel N. Lagdameo, who
was also present in the event, said Let
us truly be charitable and at the service
of the common good through our active
participation in gathering signatures to
enact a law against the Pork Barrel.

will be better equipped academically,
morally and spiritually in fulfilling their
challenging duties and responsibilities.
Our Parish Social Action Ministry
continues to respond to the needs of
our brothers and sisters especially
the to poor and the needy through its
Medical and Dental Mission, Scholarship
Program and Ministry for the Elderly.
The Parish Youth Ministry never
fails to serve the young people, too.
Right now, the ministry is spearheading
a Sports Festival which aims to lead
the young people closer to Jesus and His Church
so that they will be spared from social ills such
as drug abuse, prostitution and the like. In
anticipation of the ministrys anniversary on
October 25, they are conducting a search for the
JPYM Exemplar.
In regards to our vision of a parish which is a
communion of communities, our MKK organizers
and members of the Pastoral Secretariat never
waver in their efforts to strengthen our Basic
Ecclesial Communities in the different barangays
through regular faith sharing and formation.
We can say that side by side with our
Parochial House Reconstruction, we do not
put aside our dream to build the People of

eflecting the sentiments of people
frommore than 80 nationalities whose
lives were influenced by a holy man,
a Filipino priest said that it is out of a deep
sense of gratitude towards Bishop Alvaro
del Portillo that he and about 1,600 pilgrims
from the Philippines, including Iloilo, have
gone to Madrid, Spain, on September 27 for
his Beatification.
Alvaro del Portillo, the first successor
of St. Josemaria Escriva as head of Opus Dei,
from September 15 1975 until his death on
March 23, 1994, was beatified in Madrid, his
native city, and where he met the founder of
Opus Dei in 1935, and was ordained a priest
on June 25, 1944.
As head of Opus Dei, Alvaro del Portillo
encouraged the growth of the apostolic work
in the Philippines which, in the context of
widespread poverty in the country, included
developments in the field of technical and
skills training of men and women. The 1990s
saw in Iloilo the start of Tawili Training
Center for Residence and Institution Services
and the Dingle Family FarmSchool.

he dark clouds of uncertainties are
slowly moving away from Iloilo skies,
and only a few inky drops remain to
be absorbed by the bright sparks of decency
that continue to flow night and day.
WhenAngeloRafael Nacionalista, afourth
year student fromthe Philippine Science High
School, became the Mayor of Iloilo City for a
week as part of the Rotary child celebration
of the Boys and Girls Week, he included in
his inaugural address the call that we need to
improve on our educational standards.
After a recent survey, Nacionalista said
the Philippine poles in comparison with
other Asian countries ranks third from the
bottom out of 45 countries in international
math and science.
This is a challenge to our students to
spend more time on textbooks, reference,
and other reading materials in order to
enrich their knowledge and comprehension.
From this young students point of view,
we need to pay more attention to teaching

s we celebrate tomorrow, September
29 the Feast of the Archangels, and on
October 2, the Feast of our Guardian
Angels, let us get to know these heavenly
beings.
Who are Archangels? Archangels are
powerful spiritual beings. They are the
highest-ranking angels in Heaven. God gives
them the most important responsibilities.
The word archangel is from Greek words
arche (ruler) and angelos (messenger)
which signifies their dual duties.
Our catechismteaches us that in Heaven,
the archangels have the honor of enjoying
time in Gods presence. They spend their
time praising God and checking with Him
often for their assignments on Earth. We
believe that the Archangels also spend time
in fighting evil, particularly St. Michael, the
head archangel who took the lead in the
battle between evil and good, victoriously
defeated Lucifer.
I believe that each one of us is assigned a
guardian angel to protect us. In a larger scale,
the archangels are sent to accomplish the task
of casting evil out. For example, Archangel
Gabriel is famous in his appearances in
delivering major messages and we believe
that he was the messenger who informed the
Virgin Mary that she will become the Mother
of Jesus Christ on Earth.
According to our studies inReligionmost
of the archangels names end with the suffix
el which means in God. Each archangels
name has a meaning that signifies their work
inthe world. St. Michael, guardianfor Sunday
is the chief of all angels and Head Minister of
God, St. Gabriel, guardian for Monday, is with
to Opus Dei as a young student in Manila in
1967. Since then he had a longing to meet its
Founder. As he recalled, I developed a holy
envy for those who knew St. Josemaria first
hand. So when the holy priest passed away
in 1975 my chronic envy reached terminal
stage.
But he said, Here is the twist. I did meet
our holy founder through another saint, his
first successor, Alvaro del Portillo.
Fabio took up advanced studies in the
International Center of Studies Rome from
1976 to 1978 and in the University of Navarra
in Pamplona, Spain, from 1978 to 1981. He
was ordained priest in 1979.
Describing those years in Rome when
he met Del Portillo more closely, For me, he
was the walking power-point presentation of
what it is to be a saint.
Recalling how Del Portillo played an
important role in his life, Fabio said, I owe
this man my sanity and my life. You will say
he is not the same person as the Founder of
Opus Dei. But I say yes, he is. This is the point
of my testimony and I believe this is what
many of us experienced with Blessed Alvaro
del Portillo.
Cardinal Angelo Amato, the Prefect for
the Congregation for the Causes of Saints,
presided over the beatification on behalf of
Pope Francis. About 300 Cardinals, bishops
and priests concelebrated in the ceremony.

West Visayas State University is another
educational institution that is trying its best
to enhance education by holding a regional
reading and writing conference for two days
September 24-25. There will also be a Book
Fair at the WVSU Administration Building
under the auspices of the National Book
Development Board and the Commission on
Higher Education.
These two aforementioned events show
that we are beginning to see the importance
of education in our lives. Academic
education provides a bright future for our
students and will give them a firm footing in
the future.
Is academic education or mental
development the only one we need? We
also need social education dealing with
people from all walks of life to strengthen
communities. We need health education
to make us careful in our choice of food
if sports of places of amusement. We
need education in relationships to have a
strong family foundation, loyalty, service,
generosity, and obedience.
Above all, we need a strong and steady
spiritual education, an education of the
heart that breeds love, generosity, service,
compassion, humility, and helpfulness.
We need a thorough education,
especially of the heart, to recognize the
Kingship of Christ, the Motherhood of the
Blessed Virgin and the incomparable love
and concern of God for mankind when He
gave us His only Son to die on the cross for
the remission of sin.
Let us restore the stars of faith and hope
in the skies of Iloilo. Let our government
go hand in hand with our educational
institutions, business firms, overseas
employees, small traders and form a bond
of unity and community development. Let
us remove the contagious germs of jealousy
and pride and move onward with the firm
steps of faith and devotion to God.
God of mercy and compassion, we
come to you in our need and lift up to you
our nation as we prepare for the apostolic
visit of Pope Francis.
