The challenge was to develop a hexa mesh
parametrically from complex geometries.
Turn-around time was crucial, but the mesh
had to be tolerant of varying CAD geometry
quality (gaps, overlapping, protrusions). It also
had to be easy for the end user to
parametrically modify the geometry and
update the mesh. For this, Mindware
Engineering needed a flexible environment to
customize the interface to this specific
application.

ANSYS ICEM CFD provides a very flexible environment
in which the user can modify the interface easily.
Mindware has created a number of very customized
vertical applications based on ANSYS ICEM CFD. The
software provides effective parametric CAD tools and
excellent replay/scripting abilities for complex hexa
meshing. Engineers can effectively harness these
powerful tools with custom-made GUIs; tasks that
otherwise take days or weeks to complete, such as
building a hex mesh for an aircraft cabin, can now be
done in short time.

We have used ANSYS ICEM CFD for many years. This tool is Mindwares first choice for
resolving complex geometries with high-quality mesh for FEA and CFD applications in a
production environment. ANSYS ICEM CFD combines effective geometry creation and
clean-up tools with advanced hexa and tetra meshing algorithms.
For a Bombardier CRJ700 passenger comfort study, we used the excellent scriptability
and parametric capabilities to parametrically generate a hexahedral mesh in batch mode.
An application-specific interface was created to allow the Bombardier engineers to easily
adjust the parameters such as the number of seats, seat positions, emergency exit
seating, window positions, storage and kitchen compartment and bulkhead location. We
tie the ANSYS ICEM CFD built-in functions to an optimization software in order to improve
the design and performance of components.
