T
he Common Cents
Counts project at
the Estes Valley
Library will host a
special workshop titled
What Every Woman
Needs to Know about Mon-
ey. Marsha Yelick, the
Librarys Financial Pro-
grams Consultant, will lead
this special discussion
Sept. 24 at 7 p.m. The ses-
sion is free and registration
may be done at the
librarys website.
Gender roles are fre-
quently studied by financial
experts as men and women
are known to take different
approaches to money man-
agement. There are many
studies about the differenc-
es in pay scales that impact
a womans during her
career. And there is the dif-
ference in life expectancy:
for women, it is five years
greater, meaning different
strategies and projections
in terms of retirement and
health care planning.
Ultimately, says Yelick,
amid these differences, the
key goals remain the same
for women as they are for
men: Have a clear, attain-
able savings plan, spend
less than you earn and save
the rest. Have cash
reserves, make and keep a
workable budget, learn
about low-cost, diversified
financial products, and allo-
cate monies appropriately
for age and risk tolerance.
Wednesdays workshop
will offer basic tangible
objectives for participants
to assess their current situ-
ation and form a money-
management strategy that
fits their life goals. The ses-
sion is an excellent precur-
sor to the five-part basic
financial series that will be
open to the public begin-
ning Thursday, October 9
and continuing weekly
after that.
Advance sign-up for
Wednesdays workshop
may be done online at
estesvalleylibrary.org.

the musicians expenses,
such as for printed music,
piano tuning, and instru-
ment repairs, will be grate-
fully accepted ($10.00 is
suggested). Checks made
out to OSEP or ACCC are
tax deductible. All of the
net proceeds go directly to
the musicians. A reception
will follow each concert.
The next Peak to Peak
concert will be at 3:00 on
Saturday, October 25th. Dr.
David Korevaar, a well-
known international solo-
ist, clinician, and recording
artist, who, fortunately, is
available to audiences in
northern Colorado
because he heads the piano
department at CU, has
agreed once more to pres-
ent some of his favorite pia-
no solos. He loves his

it is a great privilege to
make music with all of
these accomplished musi-
cians who have the desired
formal training.
Now these accomplished
local musicians warmly
invite the public to come to
SMLC on Saturday, Sep-
tember 20, at 3:00 pm to
enjoy the beginning of a
new concert season. Area
musicians have asked the
Peak to Peak Concerts
committee to increase the
seven concerts in 2013-14
to nine monthly, Saturday-
afternoon concerts in 2014-
15, all sponsored by the
Oratorio Society of Estes
Park (OSEP) and the Allen-
spark Community Cultures
Council (ACCC). These
local area musicians all
hope that their regular
audience feels just as
enthusiastic as they do
about supporting more
chamber music concerts
and will encourage an even
larger group of patrons to
attend. Nothing succeeds
like success.
Admission is always free,
but any donations to defray
date to aim for, it is too
easy for them to let com-
munity service get in the
way of their fun. They all
support the community
outside of the concert
stage. For example, Phyllis
Eggers, who has over fifty
years of experience as a
church organist for various
denominations, is currently
the full-time worship coor-
dinator as well as the
organist at SMLC. Michelle
Gergen-Wisner, who
earned her B.A. in music
and languages from Colo-
rado Womens College, is
an employee of the US
Postal Service. She is often
seen and heard accompa-
nying other musicians for
local fund-raisers. Annette
Dechant, who earned her
M.A. in music from WU,
puts in very full days as the
lab receptionist at the
Estes Park Medical Center.
Lynette Johnson, a retired
English and Spanish teach-
er, although not a music
major, works behind the
scenes as Treasurer and
Orchestra Manager for the
Oratorio Society. She says
Dances, Gypsy music that
Brahms transcribed to
support the nationalistic
movement in Hungary in
1869.
These were so popular in
1869 that Antonin Dvorak
finished a similar set of six-
teen Slavonic Dances to
support the nationalistic
movement in Czecholslova-
kia.
The trio will play three of
their favorites. All seven
dances are arranged for
flute, clarinet, and piano by
professional clarinetist,
Michael Webster. He and
his equally prodigious wife,
Leona Buyse, perform
these same trios on their
own concert tours through-
out the U.S.
The Peak to Peak Con-
certs Series was estab-
lished last year in order to
keep musicians in the
Estes and Tahosa Valleys
busy polishing their skills
and artistry.

their favorite music selec-
tions together regularly in

with four outstanding local
musicians. All nine once-a-
month Saturday-afternoon
concerts will enjoy the hos-
pitality of Shepherd of the

Church (SMLC), 2000
Ptarmigan Trail.
This first program offers
a wide variety of music in
just a little over an hour.
It will begin with the key-
board artists who serve
two of the local churches:
SMLCs own Phyllis Egg-
ers and Our Lady of the
Mountain Catholic
Churchs Michelle Gergen-
Wisner.
They will be playing
familiar music arranged for
organ and piano by Tschai-
kowsky, Grieg, and Raney.
These will be interspersed
with Ms. Eggers organ
solos that show off the new
state-of-the-art Allen organ
at SMLC as well as her
mastery of a concert reper-
toire that she has devel-
oped through her love of
classical music and her
association with other pro-
fessional concert organists.
Two of her contemporary
composer-organist friends
featured on this program
are Ken Yukl and Dr.
Pamela Decker. For those
who prefer classical music,
she will include Setting V

O
ne of the ranchers
had sixteen or
eighteen horses,
mostly older geld-
ings, several mares and one
younger proud cut gelding
that had run wild for many
years.
He tried to gather them
himself a time or two, but
they were too wise for one
person to corral. He said the
rodeo club could have them
if we could catch them.
We had run a lot of horses
and thought wed be able to
get it done. A couple of us
looked the country over. I
had worked for the fellow a
time or two, so I went along.
Id seen the bunch a time
or two but never paid them
much mind, because we
were moving cows, or calv-
ing, or what ever the season
was.
I had an idea where they
might be found, and we
watched them for a couple of
days, located draws and cou-
lees where there were tracks
that indicated where they
roamed.
A couple weeks later sev-
eral of us took after them, all
on good horses and ready to
get them in the corral and
loaded in trucks to take
them to the rodeo grounds
where wed see if there were
any that might be usable.
When they saw us, they
broke apart individually and
disappeared in the trees,
brush and anyplace but
where we were.
We tried to get them in a
bunch, but they were not
having any of it.
Finally we had to bring
them in one at a time, and
the only way we could get it
done was by roping. It was
the first time I had ever
roped a wild horse. My
horse wasnt very fast, and I
had to kind of sneak up on
them to get close enough to
get one caught.
I got a rope on one, but I
roped it really deep, and it
nearly got my mare tipped
over, but she braced herself
and we got it turned. After a
little tug of war, we finally
headed toward the corral,
about a mile or so down the
creek.
We got lined out,and about
everywhere I looked there
was a cowboy with a horse
on the end of a rope.
They were pretty well
broke to lead by the time we
got them all caught in in the
corral.
We hadnt caught the
younger gelding, and our
horses were plumb wore
out.
We decided to run him by
a fellow who thought he had
horse enough to rope him.
He thundered by him, he
threw his rope and caught
the gelding, and was tied
hard and fast.
Both horses went down,
recovered, the gelding took
off and hit the end of the
rope again, and it sounded
like a rifle went off when the
rope broke.
The gelding went on up
the mountain.

Rocks on Thursday eve, and

tion jam session at the Gold

The books featured dur-

While books have been

part of the Banned Books

fact that, in a majority of
cases, the books have
remained available.
Among the national orga-

the event is the American
Library Association, which
has issued this statement:
The ALA promotes the
freedom to choose or the

The Bluest Eye by Toni
