Abstract

Indonesia is considered as one of the biggest Uranium reserve in the world. As we know,
Uranium is the raw material to generate power for people electricity in a Nuclear Power Plant
and technology advancement. But nowadays there are still many people who consider nuclear as
a forbidden and hazardous material remembering many nuclear applications were used as bombs
and weapons of mass destruction in the past. Therefore, advancement and research in Nuclear
Technology have to grow together with introduction and information about the safety regulation
and advantages of the technology to maximize the acceptance of the technology itself. For the
reason stated, this research is conducted to measure the acceptance rate and opinion of people
about the growth of nuclear technology in Indonesia.
According to the chief of PTNBR BATAN, Prof. Dr. Ir. Efrizon Umar, M.T., about 76.5%
citizens of Indonesia stated an approval to research and advancement in Nuclear Technology in
Indonesia with 60.4% of them agreed in the plan for building a Nuclear Power Plant. That was
one of many discussions about Nuclear Technology in 2013 which was conducted by The
National Nuclear Power Body (BATAN) through an independent survey institution PT Iconesia
Solusi Prioritas (ISP) between September and November 2013 and socialized in front of 50 staffs
of PTNBR BATAN on December 2

2013. The discussion conducted with a total of 4.000
respondents, with 3000 respondents came from 34 provinces in Indonesia and the other 1000
respondents came from Java-Madura-Bali. The discussion itself was conducted with Multistage
Cluster Random sampling method with error less than 5%.
From the discussion conducted by The National Nuclear Power Body (BATAN) we can
conclude that the citizens of Indonesia mostly have accepted and been introduced with Nuclear
Technology. This opinion is supported by the high percentage of the people who accept and
willing to improve Nuclear Technology. The growing knowledge of the people about Nuclear
Technology and the reality of the advantages given by Nuclear Technology, have also help with
the acceptance of the technology by the citizens. Realizing the growing positive responses from
the citizens and their growing knowledge and awareness about the advantages of Nuclear
Technology, the advancement and improvement of Nuclear Technology in Indonesia can and
have to be realized as soon as possible.
