Not only did he go there on Saturday but enjoyed it so much that he went again on the Sunday and supplied us with numerous photos ,of which the selection here and on Pages 6 & 7 sum up the whole weekend. Dear Philip, Path to Mundesley School Do any Crab Line readers recall a footpath to Mundesley School, leading across felds from the direction of Trunch? Trunch resident Arthur H. Amis, in his book Dawn to Dusk (1992), described how he started attending school at Trunch at the age of three-&-a-half, in September 1911, and subsequently, at the end of 1915, transferred to Knapton. Following 2 years of attending school at Knapton, some of the Trunch pupils had to change to Mundesley, and he was one of them. He writes: during the best of the weather, we could go across a footpath to Mundesley, but not too often as it was a fair walk, although it came out opposite the school. In the 1950s, most of the path, within Knapton parish, got recorded on the county councils defnitive map of public rights of way as Knapton Footpath No. 1, but the fnal section, in Mundesley parish, did not get recorded. Up until the turn of the 20th century, the whole path was within the same parish, so it seems odd that the path, as currently recorded, now stops dead at a relatively new parish boundary. Under current legislation, historic rights of way are in danger of getting extinguished, in the future, unless they get properly recorded - even where doing so would leave a recorded path dead-ended! It is therefore important now to consider whether the fnal section of this path should get recorded. If anyone has relevant information, please drop me a line at: The Hollies, Church Lane, Edingthorpe, NR28 9TJ or give me a ring on: 01692 650 530. I. M.Witham Dear Philip, St Margarets Church, Thorpe Market. The news that the Big Lottery Fund Awards for All Scheme has approved the project to improve the car park and upgrade the re-cycling areas is tremendously encouraging. Nearly 10,000 has been allocated. The access & surface will be much more user- friendly and the recycling skips will sit on a concrete area that can be kept clean. The work is expected to take place before the end of the year, whilst contractors are working the skips will be re-positioned but still accessible. Fly-dumping is an ever present problem and the latest deposit of grass-cuttings & dead petunias has generated warnings from both NNDC and the Parish Council but is something that we cannot prevent. I am back at last after just under three weeks in The land of the long white cloud. Be assured there were few days of overcast weather during what most logically minded good folks would describe as being rather a short trip to the other side of the world. I should add that after such a long fight, just over a fortnight spent in New Zealand is not very long time to catch up with friends and family out there. I would suggest that if you ever consider visiting NZ that you allow at least four weeks to get around the place, or even longer if you want to see it properly. See our next issue which, out on the 24th October, for the article that I have written about visiting New Zealand. I have to admit that the photos on the Front page & pages 6 & 7 taken by Eduardo Garcia, are a great deal better than those usally taken by me. Thanks very much Eduardo for taking them for us. I would also like to thank Chris Gurney for emailing us the photos and the update of what is going on at Northrepp International Airport on Page 8. Northrepps International always seems to be a great place for any and all plane spotters. I recall a number of great trips fying with my father when he was the co-owner of a Tiger Moth, particulary when he few it upside down. Also on Page 8, there is a very interesting article about Robin Williams, spotted on facebook by Lis, while I was away. I have enjoyed so many of his flms with Good Morning Vietnam being one of my top ten movies. A great actor who will be missed by so many flm goers. Enjoy Your Crab Tales Philip Keddell

On 9th October, we will each be sharing three or four of our favourites depending on how many turn up. We look forward to meeting new people and sharing a wide range of poets. Yours sincerely, Sally Hogden, Cromer Dear Philip, Through the Crab Tales I would like to say what a huge success the Macmillan Coffee Morning at Thorpe Market Church was. A total of 600.52 was raised. Thank you to all who donated items and prizes, all those who helped and of course all those who spent their money. Thank you Mandy and Hazel Dear Philip, Thank you very much for the tickets for the Rat Pack Show at Cromer pier Theatre. My husband and I enjoyed it very much - the Artists were very authentic and the backing band was also very good. Unfortunately, when we came out of the theatre and started walking back to our car which we had parked in the Blue Badge parking spaces on the promenade we discovered that there were no lights along the promenade from the Pier to the Melbourne Slope. I understand the diffculties there have been in remedying the damage done in the tidal surges & storms last December, but would have thought that lights in this area (even temporary ones) would have been given attention by now, especially since this route is being used by disabled people going to performances at the Pier Theatre in the evenings. We will make sure we have a torch in future! Thanks once again Carol Melling Trunch Dear Crab Tales Readers Cantamus sings Thank you Thank you, thank you, thank you to Waitrose North Walsham for their generous donation and to all their customers who chose our community choir and voted with their green disc. We plan to use the 290 to purchase moveable lighting for when we perform in local churches. Our next performance will be our Christmas concert on Saturday December 6th. The programme of French & English promises to be a festive affair including pieces by Marc- Antoine Charpentier, famous for writing the music used as theme to the Eurovision Song Contest, as well as a selection of Christmas Carols ranging from traditional works such Any information as to the perpetrators would be very welcome. Once the improvements are com- pleted CCTV surveillance will be installed. The news that NNDC are extending their door- step collections of recyclable materials to include glass was expected but not welcome. Many charities, clubs, churches, schools etc. have organised recycling as a funding stream for many years and could now potentially lose that income. It is not clear whether the councils decision to compete in this market is to meet political targets, or whether the costs of administration will leave a surplus for the rate-payers. PLEASE continue to support your local community groups with glass and paper donations. If you are donating your recyclables to a charitable collection point maybe offer to bring family and neighbours on the same visit. The fnancial rewards to charities are not enormous but provide a steady income. Currently a rebate of over 50 a tonne is claimable and groups like Thorpe Market Church have no means of replacing the income lost under the new scheme. Margaret Hunter Dear Sir, I would like to congratulate the following people for their comments in your magazine, Kazik Wrana, Hazel Taylor & Steve Randell. Firstly Mr Randells comment of the lack of wildlife might have been due to the fact that they were in the dance tent which wholly proves a point, readers take note. None of these people live on the Mundesley road in Trunch and I write to you in reply to them as it has been announced only this week in national news by the World Wildlife Fund that man is party to the rapid decline of wildlife on our planet so all hail to Mr Randell and his comments he should be extremely proud. I do in fact live in this area, I am elderly and rely on my car to get in and out of my property, I am also proud of all birds & other wildlife that come into my garden there is no harm in that. On the weekend of the Trunchonbury festival my central heating system broke down so I had no heating or hot water so I had to call out a contractor to attend. There is no reason whatsoever I can think of why a resident should be refused access to their own property as many other people also live along the Mundesley road all because of the Trunchonbury festival, I believe that the Police call it causing an obstruction. I would therefore ask any of the above named people if they would have liked the road outside their house blocked off and told they have to stay in all weekend, as was the case, simple answer to that is No. Of course with vehicular access being restricted to others, I have written a letter about this to the World Wildlife Fund & to the tv programme Spring/Autumn Watch, perhaps Mr Randell and his friends including the NNDC who apparently authorised all this would like to explain further their comments. I would be the frst to say that any money raised for the good of the local charities such as The Mundesley Lifeboat is a good thing. Perhaps the organisers would also like to donate to a worthy cause such as the WWF in view of the recent national news headlines also. Julian Mintz Historian Letter Continued on Page 8 Nth. Everywhere we went there were people in their 40s gear, from wounded soldiers to ladies with seams in their stockings & wonderful hats, fox furs and lovely foral dresses to whole families dressed in style from head to foot. Even Winston Churchill was even there or was it his ghost we spotted in the train? Railway men, nurses, housewives & soldiers, were there along with the classic cars, buses and the wonderful steam trains. The shops had great Window displays with everyone joining in the fun and all over the town really jolly banter was going on. The couple of hours we spent in Sheringham were delightful and thanks so very much to everyone who took part and many thanks to Eduardo Garcia for these photographs. LK. Kathryn Moore Mundesley Letter Continued From Page 4 Robin Williams Years ago I learned a very cool thing about Robin Williams, and I couldnt watch a movie of his afterward without thinking of it. I never actually booked Robin Williams for an event, but I came close enough that his offce sent over his rider. For those outside of the entertainment industry, a rider lists out an artists specifc personal & technical needs for hosting them for an event - anything from bottled water and their green room to sound and lighting requirements. You can learn a lot about a person from their rider. This is where rocks bands list their requirement for green M&Ms (actually a surprisingly smart thing to do). This is also where a famous environmentalist requires a large gas-guzzling private jet to fy to the event city, but then requires an electric or hybrid car to take said environmentalist to the event venue when in view of the public. When I got Robin Williams rider, I was very surprised by what I found. He actually had a requirement that for every single event or flm he did, the company hiring him also had to hire a certain number of homeless people and put them to work. I never watched a Robin Williams movie the same way after that. Im sure that on his own time & his own money, he was working with these people in need, but hed also decided to use his clout as an entertainer to make sure the production companies and event planners also learned the value of giving people a chance to work their way back. I wonder how many production companies continued the practice into their next non- Robin Williams project, as well as how many people got a chance at a job and the pride of earning an income, even temporarily, from his actions. He was a great multiplier of his impact. Lets hope that impact lives on without him. Thanks, Robin Williams- not just for laughs, but also for a cool example. Infuenza (fu) has many symptoms including fever, tiredness, aches and pains, headache, sore throat & cough. Most people who are otherwise ft and well do not need to see a doctor with fu but DO need to treat the symptoms. Paracetomol and/or ibuprofen will help the fever, headache and aches whilst a cough linctus (ask your local pharmacy for one suitable for you) will help the cough. It is important to rest whilst you have fu and most people end up on the sofa or in bed! Drink plenty of fuids (you may lose your appetite), take regular pain killers and be aware that whilst the acute symptoms of fever etc. resolve in around a week, the general fatigue associated with fu often takes another week or two to resolve completely and you may need some time off work at this stage. If you have a fever you are probably infectious so please avoid coming to the surgery and spreading the fu, but ask the receptionist to make you a telephone appointment. If symptoms are not resolving within 2 weeks of onset or you have a chronic medical condition it may be worth discussing your symptoms with a nurse or doctor because fu can be more severe in certain people, such as: anyone over the age of 65 pregnant women children and adults with an underlying health condition (particularly long-term heart or respiratory disease) children and adults with weakened immune systems Anyone in these risk groups is more likely to develop potentially serious complications of fu, such as pneumonia (a lung infection), so its recommended that they have a fu vaccine every year to protect them. The fu vaccine is given free on the NHS as an annual injection to: adults over the age of 18 at risk of fu (including everyone over 65) children aged 6 mths to 2 years at risk of fu The fu vaccine is given as an annual nasal spray to: children aged two to 17 years at a particular risk of fu healthy children aged two, three and four years old Studies have shown that the fu jab does work and will help prevent you getting the fu. It wont stop all fu viruses (and it will not protect against the common cold) and the level of protection may vary between people, so its not a 100% guarantee that youll be fu-free, but if you do get fu after vaccination it is likely to be milder and shorter-lived than it would otherwise have been. There is also evidence to suggest that the fu jab can reduce your risk of having a stroke. Over time, protection from the injected fu vaccine gradually decreases and fu strains often change. For this reason new fu vaccines are produced each year which is why people advised to have the fu jab need it every year too. The best time to have a fu vaccine is in the autumn so contract your GP practice now to arrange your vaccination. The telephone access number also changes. From October 1st, the service will be provided by ERS Medical. ERS Medical is a major force in providing non-emergency ambulance services to the NHS across the country. ERS Medical is already a familiar name in the area as its courier division has been operating around Norfolk since July 2012. Its feet of courier vehicles service the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospitals and Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Kings Lynn as well as GP surgeries, dentists & podiatrists in the region. ERS Medical was awarded the 5-year contract to provide the service across all of Norfolk, excluding Gt.Yarmouth and Waveney, by the NHS Clinical Commissioning Groups for Norwich, South Norfolk, West Norfolk and North Norfolk. The service carries patients who are registered with a GP Practice in Norwich, South, West or North Norfolk, who have a medical need and who are unable to travel without assistance. About 115,000 patient journeys were undertaken in 2013/14. For patients there will be no change in service. If eligible, patients will still be taken to their appointment via patient transport vehicles. Regular patients will recognise familiar faces because many of the staff have transferred to ERS Medical. The telephone number to book journeys has changed. Patients who believe they may be eligible and need to make a booking will now call 0333 240 4100. Mark Taylor, Chief Executive Offcer N. Norfolk CCG said: We are pleased to have re-procured a contract to run this service in compliance with public sector legislation. There were a number of bidders but ERS Medical was chosen because of the quality of the service offered and importantly, the value for taxpayers money. It will be good to work with ERS Medical and we have confdence that together we will continue an excellent & valued NHS service to our patients. Chief Managing Director for ERS Brendan Fatchett, said: We are delighted to expand our offering in Norfolk and build on the existing services weve been delivering to the area and look forward to continuing to work with the Norfolk community and delivering a service focussed on patient care. ERS Medical is also working with Voluntary Norfolk to bring the Car Link Volunteer Drivers Scheme back into operation. The Scheme will recruit & train volunteer drivers to transport patients and clients to health, social care and wellbeing appointments. Additionally, its national apprenticeship scheme, in partnership with YMCA Training, will see ERS Medical offering career opportunities locally to candidates aged 18 to 24. The scheme presents an opportunity to work within the healthcare sector on either a one or 2-year fxed term contract while gaining Level 2 and 3 NVQ qualifcations. You could almost touch the atmosphere - the audience were warm and welcoming and eager to enjoy their last show. It is such a pleasure to be able to enjoy this Variety Show here in Cromer. We had a giddy mix - all top notch - singers, musicians, dancers, comedian / impressionist and Marlenes Dance School pupils. Ravels Bolero routine was extremely stimulating - beautiful delivery - once is not enough! A special commendation to all those in Front of House and behind the scenes - Goal attained. The production has an emotional punch, an experience to be cherished. Front Seat Jo was very emotional, so unhappy it was ending - I know how much she cares, not really that long lovely, until you are sitting in your special seat. Residents in North Walsham have a clear view of the project and have monitored its progress. SMG Architects have retained the character of the 1930s building on the outside, but completely transformed the interior. The roof construction has used recycled tiles from the old roof, which have been cleaned and put on the new frame. Similarly all the windows will be refurbished and improved to retain the character of the building. The company, Draper & Nichols Ltd, who built the award winning Scarburgh Science Centre at the College, have completely gutted the internal areas and will soon start the intensive rebuilding programme. The Art area will have four new classrooms, a dark room, new equipment and a gallery area entrance. The new theatre will have a new entrance, a larger performance area, new seating and changing rooms, with storage and toilet facilities. The College have worked with a consultant to include the latest up to date lighting and production equipment, to support the award winning Far East Youth Theatre Company. Photographs by Greg Hayward The Pastor Asked.... ....if anyone in the congregation would like to express praise for answered prayers. Suzie Smith stood and walked to the podium. She said: I have a praise. Two months ago, my husband, Phil, had a terrible bicycle wreck and his scrotum was completely crushed. The pain was excruciating and the doctors didnt know if they could help him. You could hear a muffed gasp from the men in the congregation as they imagine the pain that poor Phil must have experienced. Phil was unable to hold me or the children, and every move caused him terrible pain.We prayed as the doctors performed a delicate operation, and it turned out they were able to piece together the crushed remnants of Phils scrotum, and wrap wire around it to hold it in place. Again, the men in the congregation cringed and squirmed uncomfortably as they imagined the horrible surgery performed on Phil. Now, she announced in a quivering voice, thank the Lord, Phil is out of the hospital and the doctors say that with time, his scrotum should recover completely. All the men sighed with unifed relief. The pastor rose and tentatively asked if anyone else had something to say. A man stood up and walked slowly to the podium. He said: Im Phil. The entire congregation held its breath. I just want to tell my wife the word is sternum. Thanks to David Thorne for this Crab Tales: 30 West Street, Cromer, Norfolk.
