1. Identifycandidatematerialsandprocessesappropriateforgivendesignrequirements.
2. Makerelativecomparisonsamongawidevarietyofengineeringmaterialsintermsofmechanical
propertiesandworkability.
3. Describecapabilitiesandlimitsforseveralmanufacturingprocessesintermsofsize,resolution,precision,
surfacequality,rate,andcost.
4. Communicateeffectivelyacrossdesign,manufacturing,andinspectionperspectives,specificallyusing
geometricdimensioning&tolerancing(GD&T).
5. Proposesensiblestrategiesforfabricatingnewengineeringcomponentsthathavenopreexisting
standardproductionmethod.

Itisexpectedthatstudentswillspendaminimumoffortyfivehoursforeachunitofcredit(normallythreehours
perunitperweek),includingpreparingforclass,participatingincourseactivities,completingassignments,and

ParticipationTasks:Throughoutthesemestertherewillbeseveralonlineparticipationtaskstalliedforcredit
withstrictdeadlines.Sometasksmaybedueinfewerthan48hoursfromthetimeassigned(e.g.Beforeournext
classmeeting),soitisimportanttobeattentivetoassignedtasksandtocheckCanvasregularly.

ReadingQuizzes:ReadingquizzeswillbeconductedonlineviaCanvas.Therearenomakeupquizzesor
individualtimeextensions,andmissingaquizwillresultinascoreofzero.Readingquizzeswillbedrawnfrom
contentintheofficialcoursetextbook.Theimmediatelyprioreditionofthesametextbookhasalmostidentical
contentandshouldbesufficient(withoutguarantee,however)formostquestions.

CaseStudy:Thedeliverablerequirementisaconcise,wellorganizedvideobasedononeoftwooptions:(1)how
acommercialproductismanufacturedor(2)howamanufacturingprocessisusedatacommercialsite.The
assignmentistobeconductedinsmallteamsof23persons.Morespecificconditionsandrequirementsare
definedinaseparatedocumenttobedistributedinclass.
