Match Report;
Newcastle win final game of the year 21-20 over Gold Coast ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Newcastle,NSW- The Gold Coast Giants and the Newcastle Hunters may not be going to the play offs but both teams wanted to end the year on a high note. This meant we were in for an entertaining and competitive game and that was exactly what we got.
The Gold Coast built their game around the mobility of Quarterback Mitchell Gardell. He ran a semi read-option offense that saw him compile 65 yards rushing. When he was not running the ball he found effective targets in Mal Moylan and Demetrious Williams. The Gold Coast opened the scoring with a 52 yard field goal to Matt Wehbe but it was a beautiful long bomb by Chris Lasscock who found a wide open Jack Gagan for the 46 yard score. It quickly became 14-3 when Anthony Hammond picked up a fumble at his own 3 yard line and in open space out ran all comers to score.
Jerome Croft proved why he leads the League in interceptions when he picked Chris Lasscock which set up Gardell to go down town to Williams who scored on broken coverage from 43 yards out. Fullback Peter Paea capped off a 12 play drive for the Hunters when he scored in after catching a ball in the flat but Roki Boston in his last game added another highlight by returning the kick off 98 yards for the score.
Chris Lasscock was picked again but despite taking possession at the Newcastle 11 they could not punch it in and Wehbe had to add a nother field goal leaving them 1 behind. And that is how it would end.
