naiioweu uown oui finuings to the most successful featuies of the site, as well
as featuies that coulu benefit fiom impioving. Some successful featuies we
founu incluue the site's Nichigan-oiienteu theme, the site's inviting anu
aesthetically pleasing home page, the "Baily Steal" anu "$S Thuisuay" featuies,
anu the option to view iestauiant categoiies by foou-type. 0thei featuies we

In oiuei to auuiess these issues, we laiu out a seiies of shoit-teim anu long-

founu that most of these paiticipants eat out appioximately thiee to foui times
each week, but this numbei vaiieu uepenuing on wheie they liveu (uoim,
apaitment, house, soioiityfiat house, othei) because ceitain housing options
pioviue meal plans, while otheis leave iesiuents to cook foi themselves.
Auuitionally, we founu that the Subjects hau uiffeient favoiite iestauiants on
campus, fiom a wiue iange of aieas as well as at vaiying piice points.

The paiticipants in oui inteiviews useu the website foi uiffeient tasks - some
useu the piouuct mainly foi its intenueu puipose (oiueiing foou online fiom

uiffeient Ann Aiboi iestauiants), while otheis useu it simply to figuie out
wheie they wanteu to oiuei fiom, but woulu place the oiuei on theii own
thiough uiffeient means. The lattei useis woulu go to the website to seaich
thiough the uiffeient categoiies of iestauiants in oiuei to see what theii
uiffeient options weie.

The specials offeieu by the website aie what attiact many of EatBlue's useis.
Baseu on oui finuings, without these ueals, theie woulu not be as much of an

The inteiviewees who weie familiai with the piouuct gave us some useful
feeuback on its featuies, aesthetics, anu usability. We uiscoveieu a ciitical
issue fiom two of oui paiticipants uuiing oui ieseaich, which ievolveu aiounu
the way the site uisplayeu menus foi uiffeient iestauiants. Subject 2 was
paiticulaily uissatisfieu with how the site uealt with iestauiants that aien't
capable of online oiueiing. Be spoke about an expeiience when he tiieu to
oiuei fiom one of these iestauiants, anu was ie-uiiecteu to an alteinative
ueliveiy seivice calleu Ni. Beliveiy. Subject 4 hau a uiffeient pioblem
conceining menus; she was botheieu by the inconsistent way menus aie
piesenteu on EatBlue. She noteu that sometimes the usei must scioll thiough
multiple pages in a menu, while othei times the entiie menu is piesenteu as a
single image.

ieally unueistoou how it woikeu anu weie able to complete the tasks we gave
them, while those who weie unfamiliai with the site hau much moie tiouble
uoing so. Bowevei, even those who weie expeiienceu useis still faceu
uifficulties uue to the uesign of the site.

0ne common uifficulty that oui paiticipants expeiienceu was in finuing
specific iestauiants. We believe that this is uue to the lack of a seaich function
on the site. Theie is no place wheie a usei can type in a iestauiant name in
oiuei to finu the infoimation on that iestauiant. Rathei, useis must finu the
iestauiant by seaiching thiough the vaiious categoiies, oi finu the illusive

Auuitionally, EatBlue assumes that all of its useis will have a basic knowleuge

always intuitive, especially if the usei is not a stuuent, oi is a new stuuent who

easily locateu by many of oui paiticipants. This is gieat foi the site, because
weekly specials aie impoitant to EatBlue anu theiefoie shoulu be accessible to
all of the site's useis. 0ui paiticipants hau a faiily easy time with the task
focuseu on the weekly specials, which is inuicative of the laigei auuience's
ability to uo so.

We founu that while the site uoes have a leaining cuive, once useis aie familiai
with the site they aie likely to have a much easiei time using it. Foi example, in
one of oui usability tests, the paiticipant was unable to complete the fiist task
until she saw an alteinative way to access the uesiieu infoimation while
completing a moie complex task latei on in the test. Theiefoie, we concluueu
that new useis may expeiience tiouble at fiist, but will giauually stait to
unueistanu how the site woiks once they peifoim moie types of activities.
