B2 Transcripts Test 4

Part 1
Today, Im going to be giving you a brief overview of the trends that are likely to affect our industry in the
next 10 years. Its difficult to predict the fads that affect how the general public thinks and behaves.
However, by looking at recent polls, we have a good idea about one area that is likely to have a dramatic
influence on the way we do business down the line.

The trend that Im talking about is the environment. The biggest concern right now across major business
industries here and in other parts of the world is about how going green will affect company outlook. The
growth of environmentally- friendly products has been off the charts in the past five years, and this trend is
likely to continue for at least 10 more years.

If youll look at this chart up here, youll see what the major trend reports are forecasting. Its my opinion
that its time we sat up and took notice.

Part 2
Christophe: OK, Aiste, we're going to talk about environmental issues in Europe. So, does Lithuania have
environmental issues?
Aiste: Oh, actually were are facing kind of a big problem. The Baltic Sea that's besides Lithuania. You know
three Baltic countries: Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania, together with Scandinavian and Denmark are close to
the Baltic Sea that's very isolated and almost has no contact with the ocean and because of that it functions
almost like a lake so it means the oxygen can't really get into it and there are a lot of algae growing and the
eutrophication and together pollution as well as nutrients increase due to the factories that are around the
place where people live are causing a lot of problems in Baltic Sea.
Christophe: Eutrophication? What does that mean?
Aiste: Eutrophication is actually a process when due to the increase nitrates and other organic materials, a lot
of algae starts growing in the sea, and therefore it deprives the sea of oxygen and once it deprives the seas of
oxygen, no more fish can live in the sea and they start dying out. Therefore the sea smells with kind of
sulphur - strange smell - and it's a huge problem because the biodiversity and the fish and the in the sea
decreases.
Christophe: Wow! That sounds horrible.
Aiste: What about Belgium? Do you have any problems in Belgium do the environment?
Christophe: Well, first of all we have a lot of people living in a very small country. I think we have around
four hundred people each square kilometer, so it means that there are too many people in my country.
Everything is full of houses, so there's almost no forest any more. There's a real huge problem of
deforestation. The second problem is that we have a lot of rivers that are polluted. We have many factories
and they're polluting our rivers because we have a lot rivers in Belgium. Remember, it is raining there a lot
of times and there just dumping all their stuff in the river so this causes rivers that have no fish anymore, or
where children cannot swim in anymore, so that's a very, very

Part 3
Katia: So, Enam, let's talk about environmental problems of our countries. In Bangladesh, what is an
environmental problem?
Enam: Actually, we have a lot of environmental problems in Bangladesh but mainly I'd say the soil
contamination is quite bad, and also the air pollution and nowadays we also have water pollution because of
tanneries in the cities.
Katia: So, tell me a little bit more about soil contamination?
Enam: Actually, we used to use a lot of polythene bags while shopping for the last ten or fifteen years, but
the government has banned polythene two years ago I think but still, we still have a lot of polythene bags in
our soil and the polythene bags, it doesn't go away, or it stays in the ground for more than a hundred years,
and for that reason the soil loses its fertility and also even if you want to ... if you try to build buildings, you
cannot build more than a certain level.
Katia: Alright, what about the air pollution? Is it a big problem?
Enam: Actually, yes, it is a big problem in the capital city in Dhaka because there are a lot of transports, like
cars there, and some of them are very old, and it pollutes a lot and there's dust everywhere in Dhaka, so if
you go out in Dhaka in the moring, you must have to take a shower at night.
Katia: Wow! That must be something else. In regards to air pollution, is there something being done to help
the problem?
Enam: Yeah, actually, the government is taking a lot of steps like nowadays if you want to import second
hand cars from other countries, it couldn't be older than six years, and they always check the transports that
are being driven in Dhaka, and if it it is like bad to the environment, they just ban those transportation and
tranports from Dhaka.
Katia: And you also mentioned water pollution. What is the situation with water pollution?
Enam: Actually, the situation is really bad, like the water we have supplied by the government as a
infrastructure in Dhaka, it's really bad. The quality is really bad. You cannot drink that water, and if you want
to use that water, you have to like bottle that water, and you have to add all this purification process to use
the water. And also, we had some tanneries in the city, around the city, and the waste from those tanneries
went into the river and it was quite a bad situation, then the government decided transfer these tanneries out
of the city in another place, and it was mandatory for the tanneries to use some more technology to reduce
the amount of waste they produce.
Katia: OK, that sounds good. I hope it will benefit the city.
Enam: Yes, I hope so.
