Support and encourage healthy, active lifestyles
Despite the well-documented benefts of physical activity, including reduced risk
of chronic disease, healthier weight, reduced stress, and higher energy levels, it
can be diffcult to convince people to add more physical activity to their lives. The
recommended 150 minutes per week can seem daunting, especially to those who have
been sedentary for most of their lives. Physical activity doesnt have to be intimidating,
though. With the Active Living Every Day program, youll have all the tools you need to
empower people to make the small changes that can positively affect their health.
Based on the latest research, Active Living Every Day (ALED) is a step-by-step behavior
change program that helps individuals overcome their barriers to physical activity.
ALED offers alternatives to more traditional, structured exercise programs. Participants
choose their own activities and create their own plans based on their lifestyle and
personal preferences, focusing on moderate-intensity activities that can be easily added
to their daily routines. The course text and online tools offer structure and support as
participants explore their options and begin to realize how enjoyable physical activity
can be. As participants work through the course, they learn lifestyle management skills
and build on small successes, methods that have proven effective in producing lasting
change.
Fully updated for wider appeal
The new Active Living Every Day text has been updated to refect the latest research on
physical activity and behavior change. Weve also made several changes to the program
based on feedback from participants and providers, which will make ALED more
attractive to a wider variety of people:
Shorter 12-week format. To better accommodate busy schedules, weve
shortened the length of the program from 20 weeks to 12. Participants learn
to set goals, overcome barriers, fnd activities they like, and experience
successesall within a more manageable time frame.
More current research. Weve included information on recent studies that prove
the effectiveness of ALEDs behavior change strategies. Both participants and
providers can rest assured that ALED isnt just another trend. Its an evidence-
based program thats been shown to work for people from all walks of life, from
college students to older adults.
Coverage of new federal physical activity guidelines. The updated text
features an easy-to-understand explanation of the newest U.S. physical activity
guidelines. Participants will learn what the guidelines mean, why they matter,
and, most important, how small changes will help them meet the guidelines and
improve their health.
Real stories from participants. Throughout the book, Real Life sidebars offer
insights from people who have used the program to meet their activity goals.
Participants will learn realistic strategies from people who have faced similar
challenges and succeeded in overcoming them.
Wider variety of activities. To appeal to more potential participants, weve
included information on strength training, fexibility, and vigorous activities in
addition to the moderate-intensity and lifestyle physical activities covered in the
frst edition. Whether your participants have always been sedentary or used to
be active and just need help to get started again, theyll fnd suggestions to get
them moving.

including lesson plans, PowerPoint slides, marketing tools, and consultative
support. Course participants receive a text and access to online tools that
enhance the weekly sessions.
Proven effectiveness. ALED is based on scientifcally tested methods. Multiple
recent studies have shown that the program curriculum is effective in helping
people increase their physical activity levels. For more information on the 17
published studies that support the effectiveness of ALEDs strategies, visit
www.HumanKinetics.com/ppALED.
Affordability. Our program offers a cost-effective alternative to creating your own
materials. Discounts are available on purchases of 25 participant packages or
more.
Flexible delivery options. ALED can be offered as an in-person class, online,
through one-on-one mentoring, or as a combination of these formats. These
options will help you work around even the busiest schedules.

Assess youth ftness and educate your community on the
importance of everyday activity
Fitnessgram

/Activitygram

software provides an effcient way for organizations to

perform effective ftness and physical activity assessments on children in grades K-12
and provide appropriate feedback to children and parents.
The program is made up of three parts. Fitnessgram is a ftness assessment tool
developed by The Cooper Institute

that assesses childrens ftness levels based on whats

optimal for good health. The assessment includes a variety of tests that assess aerobic
capacity; muscular strength, muscular endurance, and fexibility; and body composition.
Childrens scores from the assessments are compared to Healthy Fitness Zone

standards
to determine their overall ftness and suggest areas for improvement. The Healthy Fitness
Zone standards are not class averages or peer comparisons. Theyre criterion-referenced
standards that refect the levels of ftness needed for good health as established by The
Cooper Institutes Fitnessgram Scientifc Advisory Board using the best available research.
The second part of the program, Activitygram, is an activity assessment tool that
emphasizes the need for regular physical activity. After children track their activity
for three days, Activitygram gives them personalized suggestions for increasing
or maintaining their activity levels to meet the goal of 60 minutes per day. The
recommendations are based on national guidelines developed by the Council for Physical
Education for Children (COPEC), a division of the National Association for Sport and
Physical Education (NASPE).
The third Fitnessgram component is the Activity Log, which allows children to track their
physical activity over time and participate in activity challenges. You can issue challenges
to children to increase their physical activity or issue challenges between groups. The fun
of the challenges helps keep children motivated to increase their daily physical activity.
Fitnessgrams reporting functions can also help you get children and parents more
involved. The Fitnessgram report is available as a student report and a parent report. The
report identifes areas where the child meets the Healthy Fitness Zone standards as well
as areas where they might need improvement, and suggests things the child might do
to improve their scores in those areas needing improvement. Both reports also explain in
non-technical terms why physical activity is important and how regular physical activity
leads to improved health and ftness.
Fitnessgram also features robust data collection, management, and analysis to help you
manage childrens scores, track their progress over time, and generate a variety of reports
to gauge the progress of groups of children by age, gender, individual test measure,
longitudinal data, school or district data, and more.
Childhood obesity is a serious problem. More and more
organizations are getting involved in the effort to get children
moving and improve their health. Fitnessgram, developed by
The Cooper Institute, can help you achieve both of those goals.
