Before you read
Unscramble the name of a dessert.
Now read the story in pairs.
A lucky apple pie!
But last weekend, something strange
happened. As Granny was putting the
pie in the oven, Chris and Samanthas
mum came running in suddenly.
Wheres the ticket? she asked excitedly.
What ticket? everybody asked at once.
The lottery ticket! Mum said. I think
my lucky numbers won the lottery!
Everyone was very excited. They started
looking for the ticket. They looked
everywhere but they couldnt fnd it
anywhere!
Chris and Samanthas granny visits them
every weekend. They go with their mum
to meet her at the train station. Chris
and Samantha love seeing their granny.
She always brings lots of different
things from her town.
Every weekend, when Granny gets to the house, she takes her
coat off and goes straight to the kitchen. Will you help? she
always asks. Of course we will, Granny! Chris and Samantha
answer. They love helping Granny in the kitchen. They always
make a delicious apple pie together. Chris helps to peel the
apples and Samantha helps to slice them and put them in the pie.
How long does it take to bake? they always ask. The same as
last week, Granny replies as she puts the pie in the oven.

After you read
Correct these sentences about the story.
Now read the story in pairs.
Oh, no! said Mum. We cant win the
prize without the ticket!
Granny turned the oven off and put the pie on the
table. Chris and Samantha looked at it hungrily.
Can we have some? they asked. You can, but
Im not hungry! Mum replied. She wasnt very
happy about losing her lottery ticket.
After the pie cooled, Granny cut two slices of pie
for the children and one for herself. Then, she cut
one for Mum. Come on, she said. You know
you like my apple pie. Its your favourite!
Mum smiled and took a piece. Everybody started
to eat. Then, Mum started to laugh. Whats so
funny? Granny asked. Are you OK?
Mum just laughed louder. Everybody looked at
each other. This was very strange. Maybe losing
her lottery ticket had made Mum a little bit crazy!
Then, Mum held up her piece of pie. There was
the ticket. The winning ticket! Right in the middle
of her piece of pie! Thats a lucky apple pie!
Granny said.
Look! said Granny. My pie is burning!
She ran to the oven and looked inside.
Luckily, the pie was only a little burned.
