I hail from a Non-Architectural family and didnt have exposure to building activities while

growing up, however I was always interested in creativity and innovation. My creativity and innovative
thinking from a very early age helped me earn laurels in various competitions & recognition in my
community. My curiosity made me try new things and explore new possibilities in everything and
ultimately all of these factors brought me into Architecture.
After qualifying in a national level entrance exam, I joined the School of Architecture in National
Institute of Technology, Bhopal, which is one of the most reputed colleges of technology in the country,
and this formally inducted me into the World of Architecture. Under the able guidance of skilled and
experienced faculty, I was able to take my creativity skills to another level. The more I learnt in courses,
my interest in Architecture increased and inspired me to get into the subject in greater depth. This self
exploration opened my eyes about what Architecture really is. It is about creation, the creation of
dreams, spaces, identities, emotions; it is about respect, respecting nature, climate, culture, tradition
,heritage and most importantly the end user. It is about creating spaces that are always evolving, that
interact with their surroundings, that feel & can be felt, that speak & can be heard. My thoughts were
further fortified when I explored several Architectural Masterpieces- may it be the geometrical forms of
Louis I Kahn, or the dominating structures of Le Corbusier, or the traditional contemporary spaces by
Charles Correa. Historic structures have also fascinated me in their composition. Specially the precision
in the massive tombs of the Mughals and the colossal Rajput forts & palaces with intricate carvings.
Every such experience fascinated me about into Architecture- it's richness & endless possibilities. It
helped me form a view and approach towards design, which was inspired from the architecture of the
Country I belong to, a land of endless possibilities.
With my interest in innovation, I involved myself with various activities in college including participating
& then organizing competitions, weekly events, workshops, seminars etc. I was the co-founder of
'Bending Moment', which is an interactive session which was initiated by me & a few of my colleagues
with the intent to create interest towards Architecture & to create awareness about what's happening
around us. The event was highly successful in the department.
Participating in various NASA trophies (National Association for Students of Architecture), ANDC 2006
(Annual NASA Design Competition) and Louis I Kahn Trophy 2006-07 as a team member was a key
moment in my college life when I learned to work in a team & coordinate my work with other team
members. Coordinating ANDC 2007 boosted my confidence in being able undertake responsibilities. In
2007-08 hosting NASA at our college which is arguably the largest students convention of Architecture
Students in Asia was yet another experience that helped me discover new dimensions to myself. In that
event I worked as an executive member in the organizing committee and hosted a number of 'on the
spot' events and also worked as a graphic designer for the souvenir magazine.
I did my internship under architect Pradeep Makhijani in Ahmedabad, where I worked on the
development of several design proposals. I worked on the conservation of Mehrangarh Fort, Jodhpur,
Rajasthan for condition assessment & measurement drawings. During these 5 months I got a chance to
attend workshops & seminars by many prominent figures and to get firsthand experience in exploring
the works of many world renowned International figures in Architecture.
My major project thesis was a proposal for the Buddhist Monastery at Phardapur, near Ajanta Caves.
The aim was to form a relation between architecture and religious philosophies to depict tradition
through modernity. My thesis was accorded by the National Institute of Advanced Studies in
Architecture for National Awards for Excellence in Architectural Thesis 2010 organized by the Council of
Architecture. It would also be noteworthy to mention that the challenge undertaken by me to learn the
Buddhist Philosophies and their depict them through a modern form was worth the effort.
Immediately after my graduation, I joined a heritage conservation & restoration project under INTACH
(Indian National Trust for Art & Cultural Heritage), Bhopal Chapter with architect Dr. Meera Dass as the
convener. During this period my team of two architects, documented 17 out of 30 old wooden houses of
the heritage lane Kartik Chowk Gali in Ujjain, Madhya Pradesh and prepared the measured drawings
along with condition assessment reports. The proposal, which was under a large scale project called
Mahakal Van & Development of Virasat Kshetras, was to develop the heritage lane into a tourist lane
owing to its historic & religious importance. This was yet another learning experience for me which I
learned from 300 year old crafts & construction techniques.
I have also been actively involved in community projects. Back in my hometown, together with some
school students, I initiated an environmental awareness program about cost efficient, energy efficient &
eco-friendly modular houses. The aim was to spread awareness about pollution-causing conventional
sources of energy and to promote renewable & environment friendly sources of energy. The modular
house was a combination of traditional & modern energy saving techniques using locally available, eco-
friendly & recycled materials. This project also got recognition at a national level.
I have also had experience in teaching architecture. My experience at Guwahati College of Architecture
as a lecturer, helped me discover a new side to myself along with a novel learning experience full of
excitement. I believe that through teaching students I have developed a great sense of responsibility and
management ability. Interacting with the students, sharing ideas with them, guiding them in their work
was a good learning curve. By organizing various activities with the students, creative interactive
sessions and numerous workshops helped me and the students learn new ways to learn & work.
Accompanying the students to various study & documentation trips especially to Panchmura, the
potter's village in West Bengal was memorable experience. I feel pride in the fact that the that the entire
project right from planning the tour to preparation of the documentation drawings & then exhibiting the
same were carried out by the students under the my guidance.
With all these activities & experiences, along with my interest , my work, my inspired state and my
curiosity to learn has fed my search for excellence, with which on a final note I seek your acceptance to
my proposal concerning pursuing advanced studies in architecture, sustainability & efficiency in
architecture in your reputed Institution.
