DESCRIPTION

The D LR /D LO /D LG 2416 is a four digit 5x7 dot m atrix display m odule
w ith a built-in C M O S integrated circuit. This display is X/Y stackable.
The integrated circuit contains m em ory, A SC II R O M decoder, m ulti-
plexing circuitry and drivers. D ata entry is asynchronous and can be
random . A display system can be built using any num ber of D LX2416s
since each digit can be addressed independently and w ill continue to
display the character last stored until replaced by another.
System interconnection is very straightforw ard. The least signi cant
tw o address bits (A 0, A 1) are norm ally connected to the like-nam ed
inputs of all displays in the system . W ith tw o chip enables (C E1 and
C E2) four displays (16 characters) can easily be interconnected w ith-
out a decoder.
D ata lines are connected to all D LX2416s directly and in parallel, as is
the w rite line (W R). The display w ill then behave as a w rite-only m em -
ory.
The cursor function causes all dots of a digit position to illum inate at
half brightness. The cursor is not a character, and w hen rem oved the
previously displayed character w ill reappear.
The D LX2416 has several features superior to com petitive devices.
True blankingallow s the designer to dim the display for m ore exibil-
ity of display presentation. Finally the C LR clear function w ill clear the
cursor R A M and the A SC II character R A M sim ultaneously.
The character set consists of 128 special A SC II characters for English,
G erm an, Italian, Sw edish, D anish, and N orw egian.
A ll products are subjected to out-going A Q Ls of 0.25% for brightness
m atching, visual alignm ent and dim ensions, 0.065% for electrical and
functional.

Loading Data

Setting the chip enable (C E1, C E2) to their true state w ill enable
data loading. The desired data code (D 0-D 6) and digit address
(A 0, A 1) m ust be held stable during the w rite cycle for storing
new data.
D ata entry m ay be asynchronous and random . D igit 0 is
de ned as right hand digit w ith A 1= A 2= 0.`
To clear the entire internal four-digit m em ory hold the clear
(C LR ) low for 1

s. A ll illum inated dots w ill be turned off w ithin
one com plete display m ultiplex cycle, 1 m sec m inim um . The
clear function w ill clear both the A SC II R A M and the cursor
R A M .
Setting the chip enables (C E1, C E2) and cursor select (C U ) to
their true state w ill enable cursor loading. A w rite (W R) pulse
w ill now store or rem ove a cursor into the digit location
addressed by A 0, A 1, as de ned in data entry. A cursor w ill be
stored if D 0= 1 and w ill rem oved if D 0= 0. The cursor (C U) pulse
w idth should not be less than the w rite (W R) pulse or erroneous
data m ay appear in the display.
If the cursor is not required, the cursor enable signal (C U E)
m ay be tied low to disable the cursor function. For a ashing
cursor, sim ply pulse C U E. If the cursor has been loaded to any
or all positions in the display, then C U E w ill control w hether the
cursor(s) or the characters w ill appear. C U E does not affect the
contents of cursor m em ory.

Loading Cursor

Display Blanking

B lanking the display m ay be accom plished by loading a blank
or space into each digit of the display or by using the (B L) dis-
play blank input.
Setting the (B L) input low does not affect the contents of either
data or cursor m em ory.
A ashing circuit can easily be constructed using a 555 astable
m ultivibrator. Figure 3 illustrates a circuit in w hich varying R 2
(100K ~ 10K ) w ill have a ash rate of 1 H z~ 10 H z.
The display can be dim m ed by pulse w idth m odulating the
(B L) at a frequency suf ciently fast to not interfere w ith the
internal clock. The dim m ing signal frequency should be 2.5
K H z or higher. D im m ing the display also reduces pow er con-
sum ption.
A n exam ple of a sim ple dim m ing circuit using a 556 is illus-
trated in Figure 4. A djusting potentiom eter R 3 w ill dim the dis-
play by changing the blanking pulse duty cycle.

Design Considerations

For details on design and applications of the D LX2416 using
standard bus con gurations in m ultiple display system s, or
parallel I/O devices, such as the 8255 w ith an 8080 or m em ory
m apped addressing on processors such as the 8080, Z80,
6502, or 6800, refer to A ppnote 15 in the current Siem ens
O ptoelectronics D ata B ook.

Electrical and Mechanical Considerations
Voltage Transient Suppression

W e recom m end that the sam e pow er supply be used for the
display and the com ponents that interface w ith the display to
avoid logic inputs higher than V

C C

. A dditionally, the LED s m ay
cause transients in the pow er supply line w hile they change
display states. The com m on practice is to place .01 m F capac-
itors close to the displays across VC C and G N D , one for each
display, and one 10 m F capacitor for every second display.

ESD Protection

The silicon gate C M O S IC of the D LX2416 is quite resistant to
ESD dam age and capable of w ithstanding discharges greater
than 2 K V. H ow ever, take all the standard precautions, norm al
for C M O S com ponents. These include properly grounding per-
sonnel, tools, tables, and transport carriers that com e in con-
tact w ith unshielded parts. If these conditions are not, or
cannot be m et, keep the leads of the device shorted together
or the parts in anti-static packaging.

Soldering Considerations

The D LX2416 can be hand soldered w ith SN 63 solder using a
grounded iron set to 260

C .
W ave soldering is also possible follow ing these conditions:
Preheat that does not exceed 93C on the solder side of the PC
board or a package surface tem perature of 85C . W ater solu-
ble organic acid ux (except carboxylic acid) or resin-based
R M A ux w ithout alcohol can be used.
W ave tem perature of 245C 5C w ith a dw ell betw een 1.5
sec. to 3.0 sec. Exposure to the w ave should not exceed tem -
peratures above 260C for ve seconds at 0.063" below the
seating plane. The packages should not be im m ersed in the
w ave.
Post Solder Cleaning Procedures
The least offensive cleaning solution is hot D .I. w ater (60C ) for
less than 15 m inutes. A ddition of m ild saponi ers is accept-
able. D o not use com m ercial dishw asher detergents.
For faster cleaning, solvents m ay be used. C arefully select any
solvent as som e m ay chem ically attack the nylon package.
M axim um exposure should not exceed tw o m inutes at elevated
tem peratures. A cceptable solvents are TF (trichorotribluore-
thane), TA , 111 Trichloroethane, and unheated acetone.
N ote: A cceptable com m ercial solvents are: B asic TF, A rklone,
P. G enesolv, D . G enesolv D A , B laco-Tron TF, B laco-Tron TA ,
and Freon TA .
U nacceptable solvents contain alcohol, m ethanol, m ethylene
chloride, ethanol, TP35, TC M , TM C , TM S+ , TE, or TES. Since
m any com m ercial m ixtures exist, contact a solvent vendor for
chem ical com position inform ation. Som e m ajor solvent m anu-
facturers are: A llied C hem ical C orportation, Specialty C hem ical
D ivision, M orristow n, N J; B aron-B lakeslee, C hicago, IL; D ow
C hem ical, M idland, M I; E.I. D uPont de N em ours & C o., W ilm -
ington, D E.
For further inform ation refer to Siem ens A ppnotes 18 and 19.
A n alternative to soldering and cleaning the display m odules
is to use sockets. Standard pin D IP sockets .600" w ide w ith
0.100" centers w ork w ell for single displays. M ultiple display
assem blies are best handled by longer SIP sockets or D IP
sockets w hen available for uniform package alignm ent.
Socket m anufacturers are A ries Electronics, Inc., French-
tow n, N J; G arry M anufacturing, N ew B runsw ich, N J; R obin-
son-N ugent, N ew A lbany, IN ; and Sam tec Electronic
H ardw are, N ew A lbany, IN .
For further inform ation refer to Siem ens A ppnote 22.
Optical Considerations
The 0.200" high characters of the D LX2416 gives readability
up to eight feet. Proper lter selection enhances readability
over this distance.
Filters enhance the contrast ratio betw een a lit LED and the
character background intensifying the discrim ination of differ-
ent characters. The only lim itation is cost. Take into consider-
ation the am bient lighting environm ent for the best cost/
bene t ratio for lters.
Incandescent (w ith alm ost no green) or uorescent (w ith
alm ost no red) lights do not have the at spectral response of
sunlight. Plastic band-pass lters are an inexpensive and
effective w ay to strengthen contrast ratios.
The D LR 2416 is a standard red display and should be
m atched w ith long w avelength pass lter in the 600 nm to
620 nm range. The D LO 2416 is a high ef ciency red display
and should be m atched w ith a long w avelength pass lter in
the 470 nm to 590 range. The D LG 2416 should be m atched
w ith a yellow -green band-pass lter that peaks at 565 nm . For
displays of m ultiple colors, neutral density gray lters offer
the best com prom ise.
A dditional contrast enhancem ent is gained by shading the
displays. Plastic band-pass lters w ith built-in louvers offer
the next step up in contrast im provem ent. Plastic lters can
be im proved further w ith anti-re ective coatings to reduce
glare. The trade-off is fuzzy characters. M ounting the lters
close to the display reduces this effect. Take care not to over-
heat the plastic lter by allow ing for proper air ow .
O ptim al lter enhancem ents are gained by using circular
polarized, anti-re ective, band-pass lters. C ircular polariz-
ing further enhances contrast by reducing the light that trav-
els through the lter and relfects back off the display to less
than 1% .
Several lter m anufacturers supply quality lter m aterials.
Som e of them are: Panelgraphic C orporation, W . C aldw ell,
N J; SG L H om alite, W ilm ington, D E; 3M C om pany, Visual
Products D ivision, St. Paul, M N ; Polaroid C orporation, Polar-
izer D ivision, C am bridge, M A ; M arks Polarized C orporation,
D eer Park, N Y, H oya O ptics, Inc., Frem ont, C A .
O ne last note on m ounting lters: recessing displays and
bezel assem blies is an inexpensive w ay to provide a shading
effect in overhead lighting situations. Several B ezel m anufac-
turers are: R .M .F. Products, B atavia, IL; N obex C om ponents,
