Hunting white-tailed deer in Ohio
Commonly referred as whitetail because of its distinctive white tail, also called flag, a
graceful animal under discussion is a state symbol and its only big game animal. There is a main
contradiction that can be noticed in the opening of my speech: white-tailed deer has a state
importance, but buck hunting is also allowed and flourishes. Isnt it a precarious and threatening
situation for Ohio wildlife both for state symbolism and prestige, as well as for national natural
resources?
It turns out that the answer to this question is: no, hunting white-tailed deer is
advantageous in all aspects and has more pros than cons, if any. The main condition of this
statement is that hunting should be regulated. In case of whitetail, there is no killing of an
endangered or threatened species since, according to the official statistics, more than 450,000
whitetails live in the state, in all 88 Ohio counties (Gross ). At the beginning of the 19
th
century,
there were no laws regulating whitetail hunting which led to the destruction of deer natural
habitat and consequently, the animal left Ohio territory. However, due to the Division of
Wildlife, deer are back in Ohio. Hunting the animal is a state attraction and recreation activity
because it presupposes trophy hunting and hunting as a method to reduce a number of deer-
related car accidents.
The official Ohio state webpage will introduce you with all the necessary information,
requirements, and rates of how to become a hunter and help in thinning the unrestrained
population of whitetail. However, as Dave Roos explores in his article Does deer hunting

reduce car accidents? trophy hunting means killing a mature male or buck for large branchy
antlers. It is not hunting a does or female deer that actually can breed young deer. Thus, hunting
a whitetail neither diminishes or endangers deer population in Ohio. Among the methods that can
be useful in withdrawing deer from suburbs and subways and at the same time involve no cruelty
or killing are: firstly, fish and game department quality deer management programs which mean
that buck hunting is severely restricted in many areas, and special "antlerless" hunts have been
created to harvest female deer (Roos); secondly, non-lethal deer management, like landscaping
with plants that deer dont like and designing suburban developments with more trees and less
lawns which will lead deer away from suburbia (Roos); and finally animal rights advocates
offer to use injecting with a temporary contraceptive called porcine zona pellucida (PZP) that
will considerably reduce the number of deer births annually.
In brief, whitetail hunt can be seen as a conventional, but still cruel way of treating
wildlife. However, overpopulation of white-tailed deer is a burning issue for traffic and suburbia
safety and hunting can be considered as one of the working methods to help to solve the
problem.
