Pump Up the Prices

Will Premium Gasoline Cost Rp. 9,500 per Liter in
November 2014?
NusaBali reports that the incoming regime of Joko Widodo
and Jusuf Kalla may increase the cost of subsidized fuel by Rp.
3,000 per liter starting in November 2014.
If the price hike is introduced it would bring the price of a liter
of premium gas at the pumps to Rp. 9,500 (US$0.80) per liter, while
the current price is Rp. 6,500 per liter.

The plan to
increase the cost of
gasoline was
disclosed by Luhut
Panjaitan, a member
of the Presidential
transition team during
the launching of the
book "Outlook Energy
Indonesia 2014 in
Jakarta.
Panjaitan said
the decision to
implement the
politically volatile decision to
increase in price of fuel was taken
at a meeting on September 26,
2014 with the President and Vicepresident elect.
The presidential advisor
defended the increase in the price
of gasoline, citing the extreme
burden of fuel subsidies paid by
the government on the State
Budget (APBN). The new national

leaders will come into office

and have to immediately deal with
a budget deficit estimated at
US$7.2 billion.
The planned increase in the
cost of fuel, according to Luhut, will
save between US$13-14 billion in
State expenditures in the 2015
budget.
To prevent an undue burden
on the poor, the Joko Widodo
presidency will prepare a package

of emergency
relief amounting to Rp.
5 trillion that will be

alleviate the impact of
the fuel price hike.
T h e f i n a l
decision on the
amount of the increase
will be taken soon after
the new Presidential
Cabinet is seated at
the end of October.
Most informed
observers believe that
President Joko Widodo has little
choice but to increase the cost of
gasoline, addressing an
unpopular but necessary political
decision sidestepped by his
predecessor Susilo Bambang
Yudhoyono.

The Rules are for Other Folks

BALI THE RIGHT WAY

aliasj@kutaweekly.com

Gday again folks and welcome to the weekly for another blast. A
great result for the Rabbits last weekend with the best win I've
seen in a long while in the N.R.L and I'd say there would be a
few happy faces at the club as the lads havn't seen a Grand Final
win for about 43 years apparently. A job well done to all
concerned and I think we all are looking forward to next season
already.

This weekend sees the legendary Bathurst race around Mount Panorama, so just about every true
blooded Aussie bloke will be sat up in front of a big screen somewhere watching the V8 rip around the
mountain, with many parties being held for the race which usually include a BBQ or two. We really
are at the end of the day a bunch of rev heads and have just about all grown up watching the race each
year. You are either a Ford fan or you are a Holden fan. The fact that Holden's emblem is a picture of a
lion pushing a flat tyre aside there is no better words spoken than if you want a fast car choose a
Holden, but if you want a good car take a Ford. I am most certainly a Ford supporter and hope they get
up on the day and have a trouble free 1000klm run. There has been a few really good runs at Bathurst
and I trust this year will be the same. There are a heap of places showing the race and all the action
over the course of the weekend. My first choice would have to be Moo Moos steak house on Melasti
who have a great weekend plotted out for the all and sundrie. Cheap beers, great food and a big screen
projector along with a fantastic sound system in the place should make the day a good one. Thanks to
Moo Moos for there never ending support and for making a great place for our readers to go and enjoy
a feed and most of the sports and events that we all love to watch.

Building and
Zoning Law
Violators in
D e n p a s a r, B a l i
Ignore Citations
and Continue to
Break the Law
F u r t h e r
underlying the
ineffectiveness of the
rules governing
building codes in
Denpasar and the
ineptness of those
charged with enforcing
them, a report in DenPost confirms
that 42 building owners in Bali's
capital have been cited for zoning
or building violations, but are
ignoring summons issued by the
Zoning and Housing Authority of
Denpasar (DTRP).
Part of a joint effort to
improve enforcement of zoning

and building rules carried

out by the DTRP and regency's
enforcement agency (Satpol PP)
in August, 26 building were found
to have no building permit (IMB),
14 buildings violated general
setback rules and 1 building
violated setback rules from a river.
The buildings discovered in
the joint sweep to be violating the

law are located in

south Denpasar, North
Denpasar, East
Denpasar and West
Denpasar.
The chief of the
DTRP for Denpasar,
Dewa Made Wesnawa
Wedagama, told
DenPost on Thursday,
September 25, 2014,
that reprimands issued
to building owners who
answered summons for
building violations have
largely been ignored.
The current procedures in
place for zoning and building code
violations requires three warning
letters be sent to the building
owner before handing the case
over to Satpol PP for legal action.

My second choice would have to be Kuta Townhouses A.F.L room in stage two. It is a fully
airconditioned bar with 4 big screens and another great sound system. They have a great outdoor area
with another big screen near the pool, so don't forget your towel. They have a brilliant menu to choose
from and Ill bet anyone will not find a better ham and salad roll on the island, better still they are now
making their own sausage rolls which any expat will tell you become a rather strange treat after you
have been away from home for a long while. These are about as close as you could possibly get to the
real thing and are arguably better than that. The powers that be are throwing San Miguels over the bar
at 24k each, all day Sunday if you
buy a bucket of 5, So another great
place to sit and watch the race.
Thanks to KTH for there ongoing
support to the paper.
Ok folks I will leave you alone for
another week and trust that the most
of you stay safe, happy, healthy and
always remember, We are all here
on earth to help others, what on
earth the others are here for I don't
know.
Enjoy your week,

NASA engine makes fuel out of empty space.

'I CANNAE break the laws
of physics Star Treks'
famous engineer Scotty
would retort. But NASA
has. They've produced
something from nothing,
and perhaps opened a way
to the stars in the process.
Scotty has to eat his hat:
And the new microwave
propulsion system has been
named the Cannae Drive.
An initially scepticalNASA
decided to test a widely criticised
concept from inventor Roger
Sawyer even though established
thinking said it wouldn't work.
It did.
The engine appears to produce
propulsion through electricity. And
nothing else.
The usual expectation is that
thrusters need to eject some kind of
mass in order for the old law of physics
equal and opposite reactions to kick
in. For example rocket propellant is
burnt and ejected from a thruster in
order to propel a rocket upwards.
It's the major problem all rocket
scientists face: How to get the
maximum thrust from a minimum
weight of fuel.
This does not appear to be the
case when it comes to quantum
vacuum plasma thrusters or
microwave drives.
If proven, the engine would
have significant implications for the
space program.
Solar panels would provide

satellites with all the energy

they need to constantly adjust their
orbits boosting the life of such
expensive devices significantly.
NASA's Harold White who is
leading research into warp drives
has previously said engines such as
this microwave drive have the
potential to propel humanity to the
closest star to the sun, Proxima
Centauri. It could reach the red dwarf
star, some 4.2 light years away, within
30 years.
To b o l d l y g o . . . s p a c e
propulsion has long been the domain
of technobabble in shows such as
Star Trek. Now it's no different in
reality, with NASA testing a quantum
vacuum plasma thruster.
They're not sure how it works.
But NASA has gathered a pool
of data suggesting it does.
It's not a huge result: In fact, the
thrust appears to be tiny leading to
some suggestion the experiment itself
is flawed.

But the original

microwave drive inventor has
taken the opposite stance,
saying NASA's experiment
produced far lower thrust
outputs than his own.
Perhaps they should
listen: Roger Sawyer has been
met by largely deaf ears for the
past decade as he attempted to
extol the merits of his new drive.
While criticism of his
concept was abundant, nobody
has managed to prove it wrong.
Behind it all is some
pretty speculative quantum
physics.
At the tiniest of all known
scales, the universe does not seem to
obey its own rules.
One of the concepts this drive
claims to exploit is an effect called
quantum vacuum fluctuation: Where
particles spontaneously create
themselves in the vacuum of space,
before quickly blinking out of
existence again.
Somehow, these rare here
one minute, gone the next particles
are being captured and turned into
plasma inside the microwave drive.
This plasma, when directed, imparts
thrust.
If true, it's a source of fuel
delivered direct to the engine
without weighty or dangerous fuel
tanks.
And it's constantly re-creating
itself.
Too good to be true?
Ask Scotty.

A Hierarchy of Power
Citizens at
C e l u k a n
Bawang, North
Bali Power
Project Refuse to
Allow Passage of
High Voltage
Lines Over their
Lands
Radar Bali and
Jawa Post report that a large
contingent of police are
standing by near the SteamGenerating Power Plant
(PLTU) at Celukan Bawang in
Buleleng, North Bali following
protests from local residents
refusing to allow high voltage
lines to transect their land and
residential areas.
The high voltage lines
(SUTT) running out of the plant
are essential to the power

plant's operation and its

plans to distribute the badly
needed power it will produce to
other regions of Bali.
Technicians have only
been ably to attach the power
lines to towers standing within
the PLTU grounds with local
citizen refusing access to their
adjoining land where the towers
remain unconnected to the grid.
One local resident,
Muhammad Sadli, told the

press he had
refused the offer of Rp.
1 0 0 m i l l i o n
(US$8,300) in
compensation for
allowing the highpower lines to be
strung across his land.
Sadli said their
the only acceptable
alternative is for the
high power lines to be moved to
a new location, far away from
homes, residences, places of
worship and businesses.
The head of the police
precinct at Celukan Bawang
blamed the continuing refusal
of local residents to allow the
power lines to be put in place on
a lack of information and
understanding on high-power
lines.

We Must Go Down to the Sea Again

Thousands of
Balinese Flock to
the Shores for
Banyu Pinaruh
a Quest for
Clarity of Wisdom
The streets near
Bali's Sanur Beach
shoreline were crowded
by thousands of devout
Hindus on Sunday,
October 5, 2014 as Bali
residents made their
way to the beach to
make offerings and perform ritual
bathing that form part of the
celebration of Banyu Pinaruh.
After the celebration of Hari
Saraswati one day earlier a day
dedicated to learning and
literature, the Balinese form
processions to seaside's, rivers
and other sources of water in order
to cleanse their souls via ritual and

14

thorough cleansing.
Banyu Pinaruh is derived
from the word for water (banyu)
and Knowledge (pinaruh or
pengewuruh). Participants
combine flowers and water as they
bathe, metaphorically immersing
themselves in knowledge, while
washing away all dark thoughts.
As taught in the Bagavadgit
(IV.36), even though you are the

most sinful among

all sinners, by using the
ship of knowledge the
sea of sins can be
crossed.
And, while people
may acquire great
knowledge, through the
ritual cleaning that forms
a part of Banyu Pinaruh
they can also acquire the
clarity of thought and
wisdom needrd for the
application of knowledge
to good ends.
In its traditional
performance, the ritual of Banyu
Pinaruh prescribes that an offering
or sesajen comprised primarily
of flowers be presented to the
ocean, river or natural spring.
Prayers are then offered followed
by bathing and purificationin the
waters.

Sam Burgess embarrassed about NRL grand final cry

TWO days after producing one
of the great rugby league grand
final performances, South
Sydney hero Sam Burgess says
he is embarrassed about
breaking into tears as the
Rabbitohs ended their 43-year
premiership drought.

KutaHolidaySuperiorVillas
Meet Ketut our Villa Manager for an inspection
Ideal for families and large group, our facilities are popular for those
travellers looking to holiday with all the modern comforts of home.
Australian owned and managed
These 3 beautifully presented 2 level 4 and 5 bedroom villas are located
in the Kuta Royal Villa Complex, Kuta.

Burgess busted his cheekbone

in a head clash with Bulldogs hardman
James Graham in the first tackle of
Sunday night's decider, but bravely
powered on to win the Clive Churchill
Medal as man of the match, as Souths
ran out 30-6 victors at ANZ Stadium.
The Englishman was headed
for scans today and will require
surgery, but it appears his biggest
concern is how he looked on TV when
the celebrations began.
There was a time in the game
when I looked like a little baby, crying
my eyes out, Burgess told Nova 969's
Fitzy and Wippa today.
It's quite embarrassing, looking
back at it. I watched the game last
night.
Burgess said he was wary
about his face the second time he ran
the ball up for the Rabbitohs, but felt no
pain so was able to play on.
I took the ball in a couple of
minutes after I'd cracked my
cheekbone for the first time and I
thought it would be a good telling sign
if I was able to play and thankfully it
didn't really hurt too much, Burgess
said.
My face went numb I think I

did something to the nerves in

my face.
I (still) can't feel my teeth or my
gums. I might have damaged nerves.
Burgess said his post-grand
final celebrations have been pretty
quiet because he was concerned
about his face, and joked he would
have had surgery on Monday but
couldn't because the surgeon took the
day off for the public holiday.
I look like a hamster at the
moment, Burgess said this morning.
I've got to go and get scans first
from the radiologist, so I don't think I'm
going to actually get operated on
today.
It definitely needs surgery. But I
don't know that the surgeon's going to
be in today either. These surgeons,
mate.
Yesterday was a public holiday
and the surgeons weren't working. It
just depends what days the surgeons
are on.
(My cheek) is compressed in so
I'll need to get a plate and push it back
out.

On the celebrations, Burgess

said his teammates and in
particular, Ben Te'o were having a
great time but he was restricted to a
couple of beers.
It's been pretty quiet. I've had to
pull up stumps pretty quick, to be
honest.
It's dangerous with my face. I
had a couple of beers after the game
and on Monday but I pulled up pretty
quick.
Obviously I've got a big day
today. I want to get this face fixed.
Benny Te'o's had a good go.
We went back to my apartment on
Sunday night and the apartment is a
disgrace. I'm going to have to cleaners
in there to fix it up.
Burgess also poked fun at his
fellow Englishman Graham and his
hard head. Graham knocked out the
Bunnies' Dave Tyrrell in a separate
head clash later in the game.
I think it's the hair the ginger
hair, Burgess said of the danger of
Graham's head.
Growing up I think he must
have got bullied so it made the skull a
bit thicker.
Burgess also revealed what
Russell Crowe said to him as the pair
embraced after the final whistle.
Obviously, me and Rusty are
good pals, Burgess said. He's just
really happy for me. He said, 'You did
it, mate. That's what you came here to
do.'
It was a pretty special
moment.

FRENCH stayer Manduro's

Jockey Dwayne Dunn said
he had heard a crack three strides
after the post and quickly eased
the gelding down.
Watching from the
grandstand, Moroney rushed to
the trackside stables after
speaking briefly with Dunn.

Jules Bianchi crash: video surfaces of F1 incident at

Japanese Grand Prix
NEW footage of Jules Bianchi's
horror F1 crash, captured by a fans,
has surfaced as motorsport's
world governing body provided an
update on the French driver's
condition.
Bianchi, 25, is in serious but
stable condition following emergency
surgery for a severe head injury after
the crash during the Japanese Grand
Prix, motorsport's world governing
body FIA said overnight.
Bianchi's parents, Philippe and
Christine, arrived in Japan to see their
son, who is at Mie General Medical
Centre, following Sunday's crash into a
trackside recovery crane.
Hospital officials declined to
comment on Bianchi's condition.
Bianchi is in a serious but stable
condition, FIA spokesman Matteo
Bonciani told The Associated Press in a
phone interview.
That's all I can say, and I'm
doing this update on Jules' parents'
behalf.
Bonciani added that Gerard
Saillant, the president of FIA's medical
commission who oversaw Michael
Schumacher's treatment when the
German was in a coma, also flew to
Japan with Bianchi's agent, Nicolas
Todt.
Bianchi crashed on the 44th lap
in Sunday's rain-shortened race at the
Suzuka circuit.
His car went off at Turn 7, where
Sauber driver Adrian Sutil had crashed
two laps earlier.

According to a report issued by

FIA, Bianchi lost control of his car,
travelled across the run-off area and hit
the back of the tractor that was being
used to remove Sutil's car.
Bianchi was unconscious when
he was taken from Suzuka to the
hospital.
The disturbing new footage,
which you can see below, sees Bianchi
collide at high speed with the tractor as
workers scramble to get out of the way.
Sunday's race started at 3pm
local time. An approaching typhoon led
to suggestions that the race would be
pushed up to an earlier start, but it
wasn't.
Four-time world champion Alain
Prost, whose rivalry with the late Ayrton
Senna is one of the greatest in the
history of the sport, questioned the
presence of the tractor on the track and
said Bianchi's accident could have
been avoided.
A fundamental mistake has
been made, Prost told TV channel

Canal Plus.
It's been 20 years since we
have seen a crash as serious as
this one. This was not a race
incident. It was obvious that the
track was becoming dangerous.
We need to find out where the
mistake has been made and make
sure it won't happen again.
Formula 1 has not suffered a
death during a grand prix since
Senna's fatal accident at Imola in
the San Marino Grand Prix in 1994,
where Roland Ratzenberger died
the day before after a crash in
qualifying.
The new generation (of drivers)
is not used to this kind of accidents,
said Prost, acknowledging the security
improvements made over the past 20
years.
This crash reminds me of the
'80s, when we had this type of accident
every two races.
At the time of Bianchi's crash,
rain was falling steadily and it was
getting dark. Several drivers
complained of not being able to see
properly.
Bianchi's family has already lost
a member in a crash. In 1969, Bianchi's
great-uncle, Lucien Bianchi, died in an
accident during testing at the Le Mans
race track when he crashed his Alfa
Romeo into a post, a year after winning
the prestigious endurance race.
Australian driver Daniel
Ricciardo has been one of a host of F1
stars to show their support for Bianchi.

Man Floating in Bubble Rescued by Coast Guard

A longtime endurance runner
and peace activist whose latest
goal was to reach Bermuda in a
homemade floating "Hydro
Pod" was rescued by the U.S.
Coast Guard on Saturday after
he began suffering from fatigue.
Coast Guard air crew were able
to safely pick up Reza Baluchi and the
bubble Saturday morning, Coast
Guard spokeswoman Marilyn Fajardo
said in a statement. He was
transported to a nearby Coast Guard
station and found to be uninjured,
Fajardo said.
A statement on Baluchi's
website said the Iranian exile had
planned to make the 1,033-mile trip in
his self-designed bubble to raise
money "for children in need" and "to ...
inspire those that have lost hope for a
better future."
Baluchi has made headlines
many times before with previous
efforts to break long-distance running
and cycling records , including one
six-month journey in which he ran
around the perimeter of the United
States, and a seven-year bike trip that
he said brought him across 55

countries on six continents. His

self-professed mission is to promote
world peace and unity. His perimeter
run was to raise money for a children's
hospital, according to his website.
Baluchi was granted asylum in
the United States in 2003 after being
arrested in Iran for so-called proWestern and anti-Islamic activities,
including eating during the holy month
of Ramadan, according to his lawyer
at the time, SuzannahMaclay. Baluchi
served 1 1/2 years in jail for
a s s o c i a t i n g
w i t h
"counterrevolutionaries" and was
hung from a tree by handcuffs for
carrying a prohibited movie, Maclay
said. The Coast Guard described him
as a U.S. Citizen.
The "Hydro Pod" is a large
bubble made of 3-mm- (0.11-inch)thick plastic, Baluchi's website, "Run

With Reza" says. The bubble,

which he propelled forward by running
inside and pushing it with his arms,
was housed in a large aluminum-type
frame studded at intervals with
inflated soccer balls. A man who
appears on a video during the
bubble's construction compares it to a
hamster wheel.
According to the site, Baluchi
planned to run in the bubble in the
mornings, cool off in the sea while
leashed to the floating sphere, and
sleep in a hammock inside it at night.
In addition to the protein bars the
Coast Guard said it found in his
bubble, he planned to catch and eat
fish, the site said.
Officials originally received a
report of Baluchi floating in the bubble
on Wednesday. The Coast Guard
arrived on the scene about 70 nautical
miles east of St. Augustine to find him
disoriented and inquiring how to get to
Bermuda. Crew members conveyed
the dangers of the proposed trip and
asked Baluchi to end it.
He refused, but activated his
locator beacon Saturday because of
fatigue, Fajardo said.

Woman who used potato as a contraceptive is

hospitalized after it grows roots.
Doctors treating a
woman for stomach
pain were shocked to
find a very unlikely
cause for it - a potato
inside her vagina.
The 22-year-old
woman, from Colombia,
was advised by her mother
to use the technique to
avoid becoming pregnant.
But by the time doctors
discovered the potato, it had
apparently germinated and grown
roots inside her.
The unnamed woman told
doctors. My mum told me that if I
didn't want to get pregnant, I should
put a potato up there, and I believed
her.
The discovery was made
when the woman, from the central
Colombian town of Honda, went to
hospital complaining of abdominal

pains.
When a nurse examined her,
she found roots from the potato that
had grown.
However after removing it,
doctors confirmed there would be no
lasting damage to the woman's
health.
Medical staff at the hospital
have criticised the woman's mother
for the terrible contraceptive advice.
The bizarre case sheds light
on a lack of sex education, despite it

being mandatory in the

South American country.
Research conducted
by the Colombian Institute of
Family Welfare - to try and
reduce high levels of teenage
pregnancy - found a startling
lack of awareness about
contraception in young
people.
Girls are often
pressured into having unsafe
sex, the campaign found.
Maria Eugenia Rosselli, the
Colombian Ministry of Education
sociologist was reported said the
lack of 'sex talk' between young
people and their parents had
created a void of information.
The case highlights a lack of
sex education in the country, which
has high levels of sexually
transmitted diseases and unwanted
pregnancies.

World milking
championships
darkened by doping
allegations

As anyone who ever attempted it

will tell you, milking a cow is a true
art and these people travel all over
the world to compete.
The winner of this year's world
tournament at Branzi Fair, Italy was
GianmarioGhirardi who along with her
bovine companion, Mirka, produced 8.7
litres in two minutes.
However, there have been
accusations of doping as this year's top
three competitors all produced over
seven litres in two minutes.
This might seem normal to
uninitiated but the previous world record
was a lowly two litres.
The 2013 champ, Maurizio
Paschetta, said of the great leaps in
production. For a competition at this
level I would have expected strong antidoping checks on the cows and milkers
to protect the animals and guarantee
transparency of the top positions.
However, the assistant president
of the organising body responded. We
checked the cows for any tampering for
an hour, then there are eight judges.
The question this raises for us
laymen is what performance enhancing
drugs could possibly be used to help milk
production.

Playing Taps in Bali

Bali Environmentalist
Claim Hotels Shown
Favoritism in Access to
Bali's Water Supply
An exceptionally dry dry
season is currently being
experienced in Bali, most felt in
the southern portions of the
Island heavily populated with
hotels and private residences.
The Bali Post reports that
the small pockets of agricultural
land surrounding Denpasar are
parched. Planted rice fields are
bone-dry and lateritic, with halfdeveloped rice now standing dead
and yellow.
Coinciding with the drought in
Bali is a generalized Water Crisis,
worst felt in the areas of Jimbaran
and Nusa Dua.
The executive director of the
Bali branch of the Indonesian
Environmental Movement (WALHI),
Suriadi Darmoko, complained that
local residents are most affected by
water shortages, with hotels and
resorts seldom complaining of the

poor water supply affecting

many private residences.
Dartmoko claims the water
utility (PDAM) acts unfairly in how
they distribute water, ensuring
hotels receive priority before local
residents.
Suriadi blames the water
shortage, in part, on uncontrolled
boring of wells. This, he claims, is
overwhelming practiced by hotels
who drill illegal wells to supplement
their water supplies, The WALHI
officials also blamed the
government for not placing limits on

Kuta Weekly

Beer pipeline to carry booze under Bruges

new hotel construction or

the amount of water they are
allowed to use.
He said efforts by the
government to improve the water
supply infrastructure might, in the
end, prove inadequate in the face
of the current unbridled building
boom of new hotels.
Suriadi estimates that Bali
now has more than 90,000 hotel
rooms, underlining the need for
controls on the supply of fresh
water to hotels and resorts in
South Bali.
A South Kuta resident, Agus
Astapa, told Bali Post that the water
crisis has become acute over the
past month. He calls on the
government to evaluate the building
permits given to new hotels and
residential complexes. He contends
that the rate of housing and hotel
development is outstripping limited
water supplies in Bali.

A pipeline to transfer
beer from a five
century old brewery
in Belgium to a
nearby bottling
factory will take 85
per cent of Bruge's
trucks off the roads
Tired of delivery
trucks rumbling near its
mythic canals,
Belgium's medieval
town of Bruges has approved the
construction of a beer pipeline to
link a five-century-old brewery to a
bottling factory nearby.
The three-kilometre (twomile) underground pipeline will link
the De Halve Maan brewery in the
heart of the "Venice of the North" to
an industrial park where the beer
will be bottled and shipped to
thirsty drinkers worldwide, the
company's director Xavier

Vanneste said on Tuesday.

"The idea is born of
environmental and quality of life
concerns, and not economic
ones," he said.
Once fully approved and
constructed, the pipeline will keep
500 trucks out of the city's
cobblestoned alleys every year,
about 85 percent of the town's lorry
traffic.
Beer has been brewed on
the site for nearly five centuries

You may have to train yourself to stay on an even keel this

week, a chore made even more difficult because of the edgy
aspects and a Lunar Eclipse in your sign. A relationship
issue could flare up, causing you to react on the spur of the
moment. If you can keep you cool, you may find it easier to
take productive rather than destructive actions. Gaining a bit
of distance from an issue or confiding in a pal could help, too.

A key relationship or two could have you in a spin this week

as a Lunar Eclipse in Aries stirs things up dramatically.
There's a chance that repressed emotions could come
pouring out, revealing your true take on things. Although this
could be as shocking to you as it is to others, it gives you a
chance to clear the air and make some decisions. Here,
Mercury retrograde could help you resolve and heal an issue
that's been going on too long.

Your rhythms and routines could get disrupted under this

week's blend of energies, causing you to feel all at sea. The
Lunar Eclipse might bring an event or news that cuts into
your workaday life, meaning you'll have to pause and review
your options. In fact, a look at your activities and how much
they nurture your spirit could be revealing. If delays and
confusion caused by Mercury's retrograde phase are
frustrating, take breaks and try to relax as much as possible.

A job or lifestyle could be affected by this week's Lunar

Eclipse, encouraging you to take a fresh look at things.
Perhaps a contract will come to an end, motivating you to
apply for a position that offers greater challenge and more
variety. The key is not to overreact no matter what occurs.
Try to stand back from the situation, or better still, discuss
options with a friend or partner. A fresh perspective could
help you see the excitement in the prospect of a new future.

There's a rebellious edge to the days ahead, which might

push you to do things that aren't in your best interests. With a
Lunar Eclipse showing up, too, there's a chance you could
be tempted into a fatal attraction. Whether this involves
material desires or a person, it helps to stand back rather
than succumb to impulsive feelings. The current alignment
also suggests you're going through a subtle process in
which seemingly small changes could lead to positive
outcomes.
Career goals and long-term ambitions may clash with home
and family matters, creating a conflict of interest. It might be
helpful to look at your priorities in both areas. Emotions
could surge to the forefront of your consciousness,
especially those that have been repressed. A Lunar Eclipse
in Aries suggests that some of these could be rather primal,
leading to relief at having shared them. Avoid acting
spontaneously. Meditation and quiet reflection would be
more helpful.
Jupiter continues in your sign, enhancing your confidence
and encouraging you to move outside your comfort zone. A
Lunar Eclipse could shake things up over the coming days,
especially regarding a plan, journey, or even a class you're
involved with. There might be a tendency to want to
dramatize your feelings with plenty of strong language.
Ultimately, you may find that changes can work in your favor
if you're willing to be flexible and adaptable - traits that will be
very helpful this week!

Will you be bowled over by a romantic attraction this week? A

powerful Lunar Eclipse hints it's possible. However, should
you start a relationship at this time, there's a chance it won't
work out as expected. In fact, it could have a strangely fated
quality about it. It's vital that you not rush into anything, even
if you feel like it. There's a chance that an ex or old flame
could come back into your life as Mercury continues its
retrograde phase.

Go easy regarding spending this week, as unstable

energies and impulsive desires hint that you could shell out
more than necessary. Along with this, Mercury's retrograde
phase suggests that if you do splurge, it would help to keep
receipts. There's a good chance you'll need a refund.
Although the week ahead may be edgy and frustrating by
turns, you may find that an event could remind you of a skill
or talent you have that could earn you good money.

You could feel pulled in several different directions as

powerful forces play out this week. If it comes down to a
choice between personal needs, work issues, or family time,
make a decision based on what works for everyone. But this
doesn't mean you should sacrifice yourself in the process. If
anything, this week's Lunar Eclipse highlights a need to
focus on fun and pleasurable activities, ones that also feed
your soul and creative side.
There's potential for a falling out as feelings run amok this
week. If you've been biting your tongue and trying not to lose
it with someone, the Lunar Eclipse in your zone of sharing
and communication could be the influence that swings it.
However, it could be a relief to finally say what's on your
mind. Though you may feel like putting it all out there, be
sensitive to the feelings of certain people if they aren't
directly involved in your problem.
A desire to splurge could be costly. This week's Lunar
Eclipse occurs close to Uranus, suggesting that an
impulsive buy could take its toll in more ways than one. Go
easy on and around Wednesday, especially if you're feeling
emotional. Though shopping can be fun, aimless spending
can be used to gloss over feelings you're unwilling to
acknowledge. It might be best to go for coffee with a good
friend and chat about any issues causing a problem. It will
certainly be cheaper!

"It Never Rains in Southern California", written

by Albert Hammond and Mike Hazlewood, is a
song first released by Hammond, a British born
singer-songwriter, in 1972. The song is from his
album, It Never Rains in Southern California.
Hammond's version peaked at number five on
the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 that year.
In the UK the song is perhaps the quintessential
example (alongside The Doobie Brothers
"Listen to the Music") of a turntable hit A song
which, although very frequently played and
requested on radio, never makes it into the
charts. Through the 1970s, the record was reissued at least five times by various labels but
remained outside the UK top 40, despite yet
more airplay and is still frequently to be heard on
UK radio.
The song concerns the struggles of an actor who
moves out to California to pursue a career in
Hollywood but does not have any success and
deteriorates in the process. In the chorus,
Hammond sings, "It never rains in California, but
girl don't they warn ya. It pours, man it pours."

Lyrics
Got on board a westbound seven forty-seven
Didn't think before deciding what to do
Ooh, that talk of opportunities, TV breaks and movies
Rang true, sure rang true...
[Chorus]
Seems it never rains in southern California
Seems I've often heard that kind of talk before
It never rains in California, but girl, don't they warn ya?
It pours, man, it pours
I'm out of work, I'm out of my head
Out of self respect, I'm out of bread
I'm under loved, I'm underfed, I want to go home
It never rains in California, but girl, don't they warn ya?
It pours, man, it pours
Will you tell the folks back home I nearly made it?
Had offers but didn't know which one to take
Please don't tell 'em how you found me
Don't tell 'em how you found me
Gimme a break, give me a break
[Chorus]
Seems it never rains in southern California
Seems I've often heard that kind of talk before
It never rains in California, but girl, don't they warn ya?
It pours, man, it pours

Balinese Marriage and Caste

A couple's marriage will not be acknowledged in
the society if it is carried out without a traditional
sacred ceremony according to the Hindu religious
beliefs. In addition, the couple will be
excommunicated from their village.
There are three kinds of marriage styles in Bali:
"Ngerorod" (elopement), "Memadik" (more
respected) and "Nyentana" (where a man moves
permanently into his wife's home). The most common
of these is eloping, whereby the
man and woman arrange to
meet somewhere out of sight of
the girl's parents and spend the
night together at a friend's
house. Sufficient publicity is
ensured so that people find out
what is going on. Under these
circumstances the girl is not
allowed to return to her parents
and resume life as before, but
in most cases the girl's parents
are not in the least surprised.
However, they make a great
show of pretending to be outraged at the impudence
of the boy and his family for plotting the downfall of
their daughter.
"Memadik" is a marriage form in Bali in which
the boy's parents and other family members come to
the house of the girl's parents and respectfully ask for
their daughter. This is a costly process as large
ceremonies and offerings are involved, but needless
to say accords significantly more respect from the girls
parents as compared to the clandestine night-time
elopement. Form the man's point of view, however, it's
more risky as the parents of his bride-to be must give
their approval.
"Nyentana" is the marriage system in Bali in
which the boy leaves for the girl's house and thereafter
belongs to the girl's family. This happens when the
girl's parents have no sons to look after their property the man is effective assumed into the family to

continue the male lineage. In this case, it is the

man's parents who must give their consent.
The morning after the proposal or elopement, a
priest performs a simple ceremony called "mekala kalaan", which is similar to a small civil wedding in the
west. It is a very private affair and the couple wears
only the simplest of traditional Balinese clothes. Then
they are legally married.
Often the family of the boy will put on a more
elaborate, formal wedding
ceremony in which everyone
dresses up in traditional
Balinese clothing and a
priest presides. The boy
generally has a reception for
friends of the couple who
were not invited to the
traditional ceremony. The
reception is strictly western
style. Three days after the
wedding procession, the
family of the boy visit the
family of the girl, at whose
house the "Ketipat Bantal" ceremony is performed. At
this ceremony, the two families become united.
Mantras are chanted and offerings given in
order to purify the sperm and the egg in the hopes that
the two will be free from the influence of evil and
demons will not interfere in the formation of the
embryo.
Years ago in the days of Bali's kingdoms, the
marriage system was very strict. Only couples from the
same caste were allowed to marry, in order to maintain
the purity of the caste system. Anyone braking these
marriage rules was banished from their village and
often sent out into the jungle for the rest of their days.
These days, however, while still very much respected,
the caste system no longer holds such an iron-like grip
over the Balinese and greater flexibility is permitted.
