METHOD STATEMENT FOR EARTHWORKS

This method statement covers the requirement for all earthwork from CH.70900 to
CH.80300 and including the preparation of formation level. This method statement is to
be adopted during the earthwork activities for widening and constructing of JKR road. It
describes the controlling element during the execution of earthworks.
4.1

Setting Out

4.1.1

Carry out the demarcation works and establish reference marking on site.

4.1.2

All points shall be confirmed by Engineers Representative.

4.2

Mobilisation

4.2.1

All required machineries shall be mobilised to the site.

4.2.2

The machinery comprise of excavators, backhoe, trucks, vibratory roller,

bulldozer, compactors and motor grader.

4.3

Excavation of Existing Embankment (Cutting Area)

4.3.1

Existing level shall be recorded and checked.

4.3.2

Cutting of slope embankment shall trim to ratio 1:1 or as shown in the drawing.

4.3.3

The contractor shall ensure that no slippage of soil occurs during excavation of
benches.

4.3.3.1

All cut slope (where applicable) shall be hydroseeded and or treated the
exposed slope within a week.

4.3.4

The contractor shall proceed any drainage works after trimming of slope
finished (where applicable).

4.3.5

Hauling of the materials from the cut areas or importation of the filling materials
to other areas of fill can only proceed when there are sufficient spreading and
compaction machineries and plant operating at the place of deposition.

4.4

Excavation of Pits and Trenches

4.4.1

The sides of pits and trenches shall be supported where necessary.

4.4.2

Trenches and pits shall be kept free of water.

4.4.3

The bottom of all excavation shall be formed to the lines and levels shown on
the drawings. Any pockets of soft material or loose rock in the bottom of pits
and trenches shall be removed and the resulting cavities and any large fissures
filled with suitable material.

4.4.4

All excavated material from trenches and pits not required for backfilling shall
be disposed.

4.4.5

All backfilling for pits and trenches shall consist of suitable material. It shall be
deposited and compacted by approved plant. Excavation supports shall be
carefully removed as the backfilling proceeds, except where they are specified
to be left in position.

4.5

Forming of Embankment and other Earth Fill (Filling Area)

4.5.1

In areas of shallow filling, where after removal of top soil, before embankment
construction is commenced, the surface of the ground shall be graded and
compacted.

4.5.2

All filling works shall be deposited and compacted as soon as practicable after
excavation. Each layer of compaction shall not exceeding 250mm loose depth.

4.5.3

For each layer of fill, backpusher shall be used to spread loose fill evenly and
compacting/vibrating roller shall be used to compact.

4.5.4

Embankment shall be built up evenly over the full width unless otherwise
indicated and shall be maintained at all times with sufficient camber and an
even surface to enable surface water to drain readily from them.

4.5.5

Filling of embankment shall trim to ratio 1:2 or as shown in the drawing.

4.5.6

All filling slope (where applicable) shall be closed turf or treated the exposed
slope within a week.

4.5.7

The contractor shall construct retaining structure (where applicable) while earth
filling activity is in progress. (Eg: Gabion wall, RE wall, Stone wall and etc)

4.5.8

The contractor shall proceed any drainage works after trimming of slope
finished (where applicable).

4.5.9

During the construction of embankments, construction traffic shall be controlled

in order that it act uniformly over their full width. Damage to compacted layers
by construction traffic or water erosion shall be made good.

4.5.10

Hauling of the materials from the cut areas or importation of the filling materials
to other areas of fill can only proceed when there are sufficient spreading and
compaction machineries and plant operating at the place of deposition.

4.5.11

Work on embankments and cuttings in areas required for the construction of

culverts and other structures shall not be carried out until construction of such
structures is sufficiently advanced that there is no risk if interference or damage
to them.

4.6
4.6.1

5.0

Compaction of Embankment and other Earthfill

The whole of the embankment below 300mm of the subgrade formed using
suitable material arising from common excavation shall be compacted to not
less than 90% (for cohesive material) or 95% (for cohesionless material) of the
maximum dry density.

SAFETY, HEALTH & ENVIRONMENT

5.1

Provide PPE to all workers including safety helmet, vest, etc.

5.2

Provide signboards to warn workers and public of dangers associated with

construction works.

5.3

Advanced traffic warning signs will be positioned in place along and at entrance
of access roads and designated flagmen will be used when working in the
vicinity of existing roads if required.

5.4

All lorries will be cleaned to ensure they are free from mud prior to leaving the
site.

5.5

Inspect all machinery at site and ensure that it is safe to operate.
