Nowadays English has become a vital communication tool all over the world. The dream
to have a universal language which to be understood by almost all the people has become true.
This language is used in various fields of economic, social and political life, helping people to
socialize and to interact.
In some places English is more important than the official language of the country
because that language is too difficult to be spoken by foreigners. Another reason for this
phenomenon is that in some regions there are too many languages, and there is a need for a
neutral one. India can serve as an eample for this situation.
In the video material entitled !The story of English" it is analyzed the situation of English
in the post#colonial India. The use of this language has solved a controversial situation. It has
avoided hindi to become the first language of the country. $ith over %& different languages
spoken in India, if this thing hadn't happened, it would have caused serious conflicts among
locals. (hoosing English as a link language it was avoided that some ethnical groups from India
to be considered privileged.
Although )ritish Empire collapsed and India gained its freedom, English is still heavily
used in the fields of everyday life. *or eample, in legal system +ust one notary is doing his +ob
in hindi, while the rest of over ,&& do this in English.
In schools the situation is almost similar. Especially girls tend to learn this language in
order to get better +obs or to have the chance of a more advantageous marriage. The interviewed
girls from the movie, were saying that -./ of men want their wives to be good speakers of
English. The main reason for this attitude is that English speaking girls are considered to have
!class".
They claim that they were brainwashed to believe that English means class and a good
education. Although they realize that a certain language does not necessarily give you a certain
degree of superiority, they can't do anything to change this belief shared by most of the people.
Almost all the Indians know and speak English as this is a socially desirable language.
English dominates the academic field of the country. A big part of the courses from universities
are held in English, especially due to the fact that here can be found a great number of foreign
students. 0ost of them come from countries like 1ietnam or Iran because India it is politically
closer to them. They have the opportunity to learn English almost at the same level of a native
speaker.
Indian culture and civilization has fascinated people from all over the world since early
times. )eing so different it has eerted an attraction for those who wanted to find something
more. )ut not all of them knew hindi or urdu language and they were not disposed to learn them.
English language proved to be a helpful tool in this case.
After becoming independent India realized that it was difficult for it to make a path in the
economic and politic world. 2aving a population of over , billion people, it was necessary to
find viable solutions for development. And English language helped the country to do that.
3eople have gradually understood that it was crucial for them to speak English as good as
possible if they wanted well#paid +obs and career opportunities.
4urprisingly the great ma+ority of newspapers from India are written in English due to the
fact that the community of businessmen speaks this language. This country is the %

largest
English language book producer in the world. 0any people choose to buy books from there
online they are cheaper but with the same high 5uality.
No one can say what India's future will be. It is a country with many economic hardships
and a lot of things have to be done. $hat is sure is that English will continue to dominate the
ma+ority of fields from this country and indirectly will bring its contribution at solving a part of
these problems.
