SUMMARY

The article is entitled CPR Quality: Improving Cardiac Resuscitation Outcomes Both
Inside and Outside the Hospital: A Consensus Statement From the American Heart
Association by Farhan Bhanji, Benjamin S. Abella, Monica E. Kleinman, Dana P. Edelson,

The article talks about the importance and effect of high quality CPR. It is defined by
AHA that CPR or cardiopulmonary resuscitation is a procedure to support and maintain
breathing and circulation for a person who has stopped breathing ( respiratory arrest) and/
or whose heart has stopped (cardiac arrest).High quality CPR have 5 critical components
minimize interruptions in chest compressions, provide compressions of adequate rate and
depth, avoid leaning between compressions, and avoid excessive ventilation. Although it is
clear that high-quality CPR is the primary component in influencing survival from cardiac
arrest, there is considerable variation in monitoring, implementation, and quality
improvement. According to the article and to the authors , CPR quality varies widely
between systems and locations. Victims often do not receive high-quality CPR because of
provider ambiguity in prioritization of resuscitative efforts during an arrest. This ambiguity
also impedes the development of optimal systems of care to increase survival from cardiac
arrest. This consensus statement addresses the following key areas of CPR quality for the
trained rescuer: metrics of CPR performance; monitoring, feedback, and integration of the
patients response to CPR; team-level logistics to ensure performance of high-quality CPR;
and continuous quality improvement on provider, team, and systems levels.

NURSING IMPLICATIONS TO

EDUCATION
This article is essential to nursing education because it refreshes and updates my
basic concepts about emergency situation and the CPR. It has been part of our lives as a
nurse and as future registered nurses to disseminate information with reliable sources. It
serves as a vital tool for us novice learners of the academe and as a novice health educators ,
for us to enlighten the patients, significant others and our co-nurses with the information
being studied.
PROFESSION
The article serves as an eye opener and skill enhancer for me as a novice. This article
has a tremendous influence on current and future professional nursing practice or
profession in dealing with emergency situations and in performing CPR in the emergency
department .

RESEARCH
Research is an essential aspect for the nursing and medical world whereas research
builds body of knowledge used to teach nurse clinicians and leaders and improved the
quality of care. This article can make a quantum leap in the development of evidence-based
care procedures and can be lead nurse leaders to become more educated and prepared to
be investigators themselves.
Finally, I recommend that further investigation To determine the optimal number of
rescuers and the effect of rescuer characteristics on CPR quality and patient outcome and to
develop improved mechanical systems of monitoring CPR, including consistent and reliable
capture of ventilation rate, tidal volume, inspiratory pressure, and duration, as well as
complete chest recoil .

REACTION
The article was particularly interesting because it enhances our skills, knowledge and
attitude in dealing with emergency situations. It is also great that the article imparts
scenarios and things to be avoided in performing the CPR in order to render a high quality
CPR to client who needs it. All in all the updates equipped me with better knowledge and
skills that I can used in my future exposures to emergency department.
