Instincts of preliminary stages
determine character ....
he current stage of human e!istence is more or less the same
as the state of the spiritual su"stance #ithin e$ery e!ternal form%
namely the su"stance #ill al#ays ha$e to fight the oppositions
#hich are most po#erful #ithin itself% therefore the human "eing
has to fight against e$il instincts #ithin himself during his earthly
e!istence.
hese are e!ceptionally #ell de$eloped the more opportunity the
spiritual essence has had to indulge itself during a preliminary
stage.
hese instincts of the preliminary stages ha$e left their mar& on
the spiritual essence% i.e. the human "eing has to fight
particularly resolutely against such instincts ....
#hile the human "eing #ho pre$iously had completed his tas&
#illingly and conse'uently is already in a certain state of
maturity #ill en(oy an easier life.
he #ill to ser$e li"erates the su"stance correspondingly e$en
#hile it is still surrounded "y a form. )nd this no# su"missi$e
su"stance #ill li$e in a form #hich out#ardly also sho#s the
"eing*s #illingness. +ence the soul*s degree of maturity can "e
assessed "y its e!ternal shape.
In the em"odiment as human "eing only those su"stances of
soul unite #ho share the same nature, "ut accordingly #ill also
"e the fight on earth "ecause many su"stances of soul united
and influence the "eing in much the same #ay as in the pre$ious
form.
he sooner the "eing can learn to o$ercome the imperfections
the less it #ill resist and can already "ecome patient% #illing and
acti$e during the preliminary stages .... +o#e$er% if it holds on to
an instinct #ithin itself it #ill also ha$e to suffer it as a human
"eing and this determines his character ....

he human "eing*s course of life corresponds to his nature% i.e.
faults and imperfections adhere to his soul from which it
should free itself during its earthly life.
hese faults and imperfections are not the same in e$ery person
"ecause e$ery su"stance of soul has pre$iously li$ed in a
different e!ternal form in #hich certain good or "ad peculiarities
had de$eloped to a greater or lesser degree.
.onse'uently people*s nature #ill "e 'uite different too and
li&e#ise re'uire different methods of teaching to promote #hat is
good in them and to o$ercome #hat can "e regarded as
inade'uate or "ad.
It #ould no# "e completely #rong to assume that all souls are
formed ali&e at the moment of their em"odiment on earth. here
are in fact many differences and the human "eing assigns these
differences "et#een the "eings to /heredity*.
Out#ardly it may indeed appear as if the children #ould ha$e to
accept a certain "urden during the course of their life% namely
peculiarities of their "eing #hich can either "e helpful or a
hindrance to their spiritual de$elopment "ut for #hich they could
not "e held responsi"le%
"ecause they reason that their /genetic ma&e0up* is not their o#n
fault and that it therefore re'uires more strength to com"at and
to o$ercome these in"orn defects.
he human "eing has to com"at all his defects and impro$e
himself to ac'uire maturity of soul. )nd if specific instincts are
predominant in him he should understand that human nature is
not determined "y parental disposition
"ut that the human "eing had allo#ed precisely those
#ea&nesses and imperfections to "ecome part of his nature
during the infinitely many em"odiments "efore the human stage%
during #hich the "eing felt comforta"le and did nothing to
li"erate itself from such faults and fla#s. )nd no# on earth it
may #ell ha$e the #ill to do so "ut it has a certain #ea&ness.
It considers its deficiency as its (ust right "ecause it regards
them as its inheritance #ithout fault of its o#n. )nd yet it #as its
o#n $olition to (oin people #hose nature resem"les its o#n
during the time of its earthly life. -recisely this similarity of
nature had attracted the soul see&ing incarnation% conse'uently
one generally spea&s of heredity e$en though the physical
parents had no share in the nature of the souls in their care
during the time on earth.
+ence e$ery soul has to deal #ith the tas& of higher de$elopment
itself. his tas& can ne$er "e done "y another human "eing% not
e$en "y the physical parents.
1i&e#ise% the parents are not responsi"le for the disposition of
their children e$en though it may appear as if the children ha$e
to endure parental heredity.
2$ery "eing is responsi"le for itself% although the human "eing as
such should "e educated to impro$e himself as long as he is still
in the care of his physical parents% "ecause e$ery person has to
accomplish the #or& on his soul himself other#ise he #ill not "e
a"le to li"erate himself from his past guilt of sins ....
