Speaker Dependent Wheel Chair Control
Abstract
Over the years transportation for the common man has become more and more easy and
convenient. But one section of the society has gone largely ignored from this development, the
physically challenged people. For the physically challenged there has been not much development or
improvement in the way of transportation. This project is an attempt at improving the mode of
movement easier and convenient for the physically challenged.
In this project a battery operated electrical wheel chair will be constructed. The wheel chair will be
driven using motors and controlled by a microcontroller based embedded system. The most
significant aspect of the project is the voice based control of the wheel chair. This will make the use
of the wheelchair easy even for people without hands, or for people who are paralyzed and cant use
the hands etc. Since the wheel chair depends on the voice input it can be used by any one.
For the implementation of the project a embedded voice recognition module will be used. An
embedded voice recognition module can recognize voice without requiring a computer. Earlier
approaches for voice recognition were based on computer software and hence were not practically
possible for applications like wheel chairs. The embedded voice recognition module can be
programmed to recognize voice in any language and hence can be used for any one. Further the
voice recognition module can be reprogrammed so different people can use it if required.
Once the project is implemented the user of the wheel chair has to sit in the wheel chair and just say
what direction he wants to move in. This voice input will be recognized by the speech recognition
module. The speech recognition module then gives the data about the word to a microcontroller.
The microcontroller receives the word and accordingly controls the motor drives. The motor drives
finally run the motors, thus enabling the movement.
Thus this project can offer a very easy and convenient mode of movement to the physically
challenged people. Also this project is applicable for people with any disabilities, be it handicapped
or paralyzed people or old people who do not have the muscular strength to move by themselves.

Existing System
1. In existing system, the physically challenged persons are dependent on others for moving
somewhere using wheel chairs.

Proposed System
1. In the proposed system, a voice operated wheel chair is designed.
2. The devices can be controlled by just uttering a word.
