FAO Forecasts 2015 Global Rice Trade at 40 Million
Tons, Slightly Up from Last Year
Oct 09, 2014

The UN's Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) has forecasted 2015 global rice trade at around 40 million
tons, slightly up from an estimated 39.7 million tons in 2014. According to the FAO, the increase is meagre
because many countries are expected to compensate production shortfalls from their national reserves though
some of them still depend on imports. On the imports side, the FAO estimates African countries to increase rice
imports by 3% in 2015 and contribute majorly to global rice trade. They are expected to import around 14.4
million tons of rice accounting for about 36% of world's total rice imports. It expects Nigeria, Cote D'Ivoire,
Senegal, South Africa, Benin, Cameroon, Kenya, Mozambique and Guinea Bissau to import more rice in 2015
to meet steady increases in consumption and falls in production.
The FAO estimates the imports of Asian countries, including Bangladesh, Indonesia, Sri Lanka, Turkey and the
Philippines, to decline to around 18.5 million tons or rice in 2015, down about 1% from an estimated 20.35
million tons in 2014. It estimates China's imports to increase significantly due to continuing high domestic
prices. It also expects Iran, whose imports declined temporarily due to increase in tariffs on basmati rice from
22% to 40% in July 2014, to increase imports in 2015.
The UN agency expects Latin American and the Caribbean countries to import around 3.7 million tons of rice
in 2015, up about 1.7% from an estimated 3.64 million tons in 2014. It expects Haiti, Nicaragua, Panama,
Venezuela and Brazil to contribute to increase in rice imports next year due to expected fall in production. In
North America, the FAO forecasts the U.S. rice imports to decline in 2015. In Europe, it expects imports by the
European Union to remain steady and imports by Russia to decline.
On the exports side, the FAO expects all Asian
countries except India to increase exports in 2015.
It expects Thailand to reclaim its world's top
exporter status in 2014 and continue it in 2015 as
well. It also expects Cambodia, China, Myanmar,
Pakistan and Vietnam to increase exports
significantly. In other part of the world, the FAO
expects Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Guyana and

the U.S. are expected to increase exports. It however, expects exports of Uruguay to decline in 2015 due to its
high production costs.

FAO Forecasts 2014-15 Global Rice Production at
496.4 Million Tons; Slightly Down from Previous
Year
Oct 09, 2014

The UN's Food and Agricultural Organization
(FAO) has forecasted 2014-15 global rice
production at around 496.4 million tons, slightly
down from an estimated 498.4 million tons in 2013-
14; and down about 1% from its last month's
forecast of around 500.4 million tons. The decline
is attributed to expected poor output from Asian
countries including India, Indonesia, Cambodia,
Republic of Korea, Nepal, Pakistan, the
Philippines, Sri Lanka and Thailand. The FAO
expects output in Vietnam to increase significantly,
while it expects slight increases in Bangladesh and
China. In Latin America and the Caribbean, the FAO expects output in Brazil, Guyana and Paraguay. It
however forecasts lower output in Bolivia due to heavy floods and in Colombia due to water shortages. In
Central America and the Caribbean, the FAO forecasts lower output in El Salvador, Guatemala, Nicaragua and
Panama. It however, expects output increases in Costa Rica, Cuba and Mexico. In Africa, the FAO expects
output to fall in Madagascar, Egypt, Benin, Chad, Guinea Bissau, Nigeria and Senegal, Burundi, Ethiopia and
Rwanda due to erratic rainfall. It however, expects increased output in Cote DIvoire, Ghana, Guinea, Mali,
Niger, Tanzania and Sierra Leone.
In Oceania, the FAO estimates output in Australia to fall significantly due to insufficient availability of water.
In North America, the FAO expects output in the U.S. to increase considerably despite ongoing drought in

California. In Europe, the FAO forecasts output of the European Union to remain stable while it forecasts the
output of Russia to increase. The FAO estimates 2014-15 global rice utilization at around 500 million tons, up
about 1.7% from an estimated 492 million tons in 2013-14 due to expected increase in global per capita rice
consumption to around 57.5 kilograms from around 57.4 kilograms in 2013-14.
The FAO estimates global rice inventories to decline in 2015 to around 177.7 million tons, down about 2%
from an estimated 181.3 million tons in 2014 as it expects many countries to withdraw from existing stocks in
the event of a lower production. It mainly expects stocks to decline in India, Indonesia, Myanmar, Sri Lanka
and Thailand. It however, expects inventories to increase in China, Bangladesh, Cambodia, Republic of Korea
and Vietnam. The FAO expects stocks to decline in Africa, Latin America and the Caribbean and the Oceania.

Flood-hit Farmers Want Uniform Compensation in
Punjab Pakistan
Oct 09, 2014
In Punjab, Pakistan, the farmers impacted by recent floods have put forth a demand for the crop compensation
to be paid for all and do away with curtailing only on farmers with 10 acres. It is estimated that last month
floods adversely affected, according to government, about 2.3 million acres of orchards and crops in 3,055
villages in Punjab. On an average, the damage is estimated to be Rs 30,000 per acre (about $119 per hectare),
totaling to Rs 70 billion (about $694 million). The planned compensation for the farmers was assessed at Rs

4,000 (about $40), which is limited to farmers owing 10 acres (about 4 hectares) or less. Some locals say this
policy based on land ownership is lopsided and inequitable.
They say that irrespective of acreage holding, all farmers should receive a reasonable amount as compensation
and the district administration should not have discriminate based on acreage. Adding that the benchmark of 11
acres (about 4.5 hectares) and above ownership of land is not sound policy and the compensation policies
should take into consideration all the segments of farmers and not just landholders with 10 or less
acreage.Because rice is a cost- and water-intensive crop, especially basmati rice that was destroyed in the large
swaths of Hafizabad, Gujranwala, Mandi Bahauddin, Narowal and other rice producing areas, some officials
have put forth a demand for compensation worth at least Rs 10,000 per acre (about $40 per hectare) for rice,
equivalent to one-third the average estimated damage.

ahead of WASDE Report despite Healthy Export
Sales
Oct 09, 2014
The U.S. cash market was lifeless today despite healthy export sales numbers although analysts note that they
were void of any surprises. Tomorrow we have our monthly USDA World Agriculture Supply and Demand
Estimate report which is expected to be a non-event for rice; however, the rice market will likely see some spill-
over influence from the other grains. As of today, offers decreased slightly to around $12.75-$13.00 per cwt fob
farm (about $281-$287 per ton) while bids could be found near $12.75-$13.00 per cwt (about $281-$287 per
ton) for October delivery; however. there were no trades to report.
In the meantime, today the USDA reported that cumulative net export sales for the week ending on October 2,
totaled 120,600 tons which was 80% higher than last week and considerably higher than the prior 4-week
average.Increases reported for the following destinations: 40,900 tons to unknown destinations, 30,000 tons to
Venezuela, 19,800 tons to Mexico, 11,000 tons to the Haiti, and 10,000 tons to South Korea.U.S. rice exporters
shipped 43,500 tons which was 48% higher than last week and 32% higher than the prior 4-week average. The

current KMS may fall short of the targeted 34.289 million tons (31.089 million tons of rice from the Kharif crop

production was badly affected by cyclones and excess rainfall.Punjab (8.11 million tons), Telangana (4.34
million tons), Chhattisgarh (4.29 million tons) and Andhra Pradesh (3.73 million tons) are the top contributors

data that showed weekly sales of 120,600 tons and weekly shipments of 43,500 tons, both of which were vast
