Problem
(a slight modification of problem 1, page 225 in Rawson and Tupper V1, 3rd Ed.)
A powered barge with rectangular x-sections has length of 50m. and a beam of 8m. When empty, draughts
are 0.5m fwd. and 1.1m aft. The lightship weight is made up of steel structure assumed evenly distributed
over the entire length, and machinery/superstructure weight spread over the aft 10m. A cargo load of 100
tonnes can be carried evenly over the fwd 40m., but to keep the fwd draft at a maximum of 0.6m, ballast
water must be added evenly to the aft 10m.
To Do:
a) find the weight of the structure and machinery
b) find the required ballast water weight
c) draw the load (total weight) diagram
d) draw the shear force diagram
e) draw the bending moment diagram
f) find the maximum bending moment.
Definitions
Wm : weight of machinery & superstructure
Ws : weight of hull structure
Wl : Lightship weight Wm+Ws
