A SAMPLE ACTION RESEARCH DESIGN IN ENGLISH (READING)

Situation/Problem

Grade VI pupils have low achievement in English (Reading)

Objective

To raise the achievement level of grade VI pupils in English (Reading)

Possible Causes

1. Poor word attack and comprehension skills of pupils.
2. Teachers seldom use HOTS questions during classroom interaction.
3. Remedial instruction in Reading is not well-planned and properly
implemented.
4. School heads/supervisors spend less time in observing Grade VI
classes.

Plan of Action (Possible Solutions)

If Grade VI pupils have better word attack and comprehension skills,
their achievement level will increase.
If Grade VI teachers maximize the use of HOTS questions during
classroom interaction, the pupils achievement level will increase.
If remedial reading instruction is well-planned and properly
implemented, the pupils achievement level will increase.
If school heads and supervisors spend more time observing Grade VI
classes, the pupils achievement level will increase.

Evaluation and Follow-up Action
If after conducting the SLAC Session/s on HOTS, using the skill
exercises, implementing the Project S3Rs and intensive observation made by
the school heads, the achievement level of the pupils in Grade IV increased
by 2% in the periodical exam, a report on the success of the action research
will be made. Otherwise, there is a need to rethink and/or revise the
research design by employing other strategies, or refining current strategies,
and to repeat the cycle.
