The penetrant method of non-destructive testing is based
on capillary penetration of indicator liquid (penetrant) into the
surface defects (cracks, pores, etc.). After intermediate
cleaning and subsequent drying, a developer is applied as a
thin, white layer onto the surface to be inspected. The
developer pulls the penetrant out of the surface defects and
makes them visible as coloured, linear or rounded indications.
Documentation is possible by means of adhesive films,
photographs or video techniques.
Penetrant testing is reliable in detecting the defects with a
width down to the range of m.
Penetrant inspection can detect surface defects accurately
and easily independent of types, materials and surface
configuration of the objects to be tested. Other methods of
non destructive testing can be applied only with restrictions.
Necessary condition: defects must be open to surface.
Capillary systems have been also used for the leak testing.

the penetration time according to the
requirements of DIN EN ISO 3452, Part 2
and EN 571, Part 1.
For testing at higher temperature (from
+65 to + 175 ) the Super-Chek
penetrant system has been specially developed.
The NORD-TEST penetrant system was tested and
approved in accordance with DIN EN ISO 3452-2,
EN 571, KWU and meets the requirements of
Lloyd's Register of Shipping, Bureau Veritas,
Bureau Central Hollandais, Germanischer Lloyd,
MIL-I-25135/QPL-25135, AMS 2644, ASME Boiler

STATIONARY FACILITIES FOR PENETRANT TESTING

Stationary devices for fluorescent penetrant testing
correspond to the specifications of main world standards:
MIL-I 25135E, MIL STD 6866, AMS 2644, EN 571-1. All
components meet the European requirements for Health,
Safety and Ergonomics.

The inspection systems are basically made of stainless steel
and equipped with first class means for functional control.
The devices are designed and manufactured according to
customers performance specifications with regard for
specific inspection tasks and test objects.

Main stages of processing:
1. Pre-clean;
2. Wash;
3. Dry to = 1000C;
4. Cool to T = 40;
5. Dip in a tank with penetrant
6. Water wash
7. Dip in a tank with emulsifier
8. Post water wash;
9. Dry at =60 C;
10. Electrostatic application of powder developer;
11. Surface inspection under UV irradiation.

ELECTROSTATIC DEVICES

Electrostatic liquid application
is a high-efficient coating method,
offering decisive advantages over
conventional application
techniques in many areas of
industry including penetrant
testing.
Due to the electrostatic charge
the penetrant (developer) particles
repel each other to produce an
extremely fine atomization. The
uniform spray jet generates a very
homogeneous material application
with an even coating, resulting in a
particularly high quality finish.
The wrap-around effect results
from a force field between the negatively charged penetrant
(developer) particles and the grounded work piece. Both
the front and rear of the work piece can thus be coated at
the same time with enormous savings in material and
time.
To achieve maximum wrap-around and optimum
application efficiency the electrostatic systems operate at a
very high level of performance.

16

TEST PANELS

Sensitivity of inspection media, quality of intermediate cleaning and control of the whole penetrant process are determined by
test bodies, which are metal panels with defined roughness, provided with standardized artificial cracks (defects).

Test body JIS Z 2343

Reference Block No.1 (EN ISO 3452-3)

Reference Test Panel No.2 (EN ISO 3452-3)

Art.No. 127.550.000

The Reference Test Panel No. 2 is an austenitic plate, which is chrome-plated and provided
with four fields (25 x 35 mm) of different surface roughness (Ra = 2,5 m, Ra = 5 m, Ra
= 10 m and Ra = 15 m) on the one half and 5 star-shaped crack patterns of different
sizes on the other half. The rough fields are used for control of the intermediate washing-
off. The star-shaped cracks in the chrome plating are generated by ball stamping from the
rear side.
The indication on the reference test panel gives no suggestion of the indication on the part
under test.

Art.No. 127.400.001

The Type 1 Reference Block for testing sensitivity of fluorescent and visible penetrant
systems consists of 4 nickel-chrome plated panels with 10, 20, 30 and 50 m thickness of
plating respectively.
The panels with cracks depth of 10, 20 and 30 m are used for determination of the
sensitivity of fluorescent penetrant systems.
The sensitivity of visible (contrast) penetrant systems is determined by using the 30 and 50
m plated panels.
The Type 1 panels are rectangular in shape with typical dimensions of 35 x 100 x 2 mm
Transverse cracks are made in each panel by stretching the panels in the longitudinal
direction. The width to depth ratio of each crack should be approximately 1:20.
A declaration stating conformance to EN ISO 3452-3 and in line with EN 10204, Type 3.1 B
shall accompany each test block.

Art.No. 127.600.001 - 10 m
Art.No. 127.600.002 - 20 m
Art.No. 127.600.003 - 30 m
Art.No. 127.600.004 - 50 m

The test body is used to determine the sensitivity of penetrant systems and for comparing
two penetrants, one of which can be taken for standard. It consists of two test panels which
are bronze planes 100352 mm, plated with NiCr-layer. Several crosscut cracks are made
in the nickel-chrome-plating, the depth of cracks fits the width of the NiCr-plating. The
bodies are designed in 4 types with plating width of 10, 20, 30 & 50 m. The quotient of
cracks width to their depth equals 1:20. Each test-panel is provided with a certificate
according to EN 10204, type 3.1 B, which verifies its conformity to EN ISO 3452-3. The test
panels with cracks depth of 10, 20, 30 m are used for testing of fluorescent penetrant
systems sensitivity. The sensitivity of contrast penetrant systems is determined by panels
with cracks depth of 30 and 50 m.

17

Test Panel ASME V

Test Panels WTP-1 and WTP-2

Test Panel PSM-5

UTE-3 Inspectability Scale & Visual Comparator

Art.No. 127.100.000

The ASME V panel is used for the testing of the penetrants indication sensitivity. Due to the
division of the test panel into two parts, it is possible to compare two different penetrants.
The test panel is an aluminum block of 80 50 10 mm, divided by a notch
(50 2 1,5 mm), into two parts. Because of a special thermal treatment the panel
surface is provided with a crack pattern, which is different on the front and rear side of the
test panel.

(U87, Rot 3000, U89)

Art.No. 127.700.001 - WTP 1
Art.No. 127.700.002 - WTP 2

The Test Panels are designed to evaluate the removability of fluorescent penetrants
according to the requirements of AMS 2644C.
The WTP-1 is a stainless steel panel, measuring 46 inches with two parallel medium
rough strips, each 61,5 inches, separated by a smooth 1 inch strip.
The WTP-2 is a set of two identical panels measuring 1.5 x 2 inches produced from a single
sheet and is also used for assessment of fluorescent penetrants removability.

Art.No. 127.800.000

The PSM-5 test panel is used for testing the penetrant process in whole while human or
automatic (semiautomatic) processing according to Pratt & Whitney Aircraft TAM 1460 40.
The PSM-5 is a rectangular panel, measuring 1015 cm, width 2,3 mm, made of stainless
steel.
The chromium-plated strip on the left side contains 5 star-shaped crack patterns which are
arranged according to their sizes. The crack pattern differs from one panel to another. The
right half is sandblasted and used to evaluate the penetrant removability.
The panel should not to be used for comparison of different penetrant systems.

Art.No. 127.850.000

The INSPECTABILITY SCALE is used under UV (black) light to determine if fluorescent
brightness at the test surface is adequate and in proper contrast to ambient white light. It
also can disclose whether the operator can see the size indication he is seeking.
The VISUAL COMPARATOR consists of sentences printed in Jaeger 1 and Jaeger 2 print
sizes. The operators ability to read the appropriate sentence (J1 or J2 as required by the
applicable specification) at the test surface, determines his visual ability under the test
lightning conditions.

The magnetic particle testing method (MT) is one of the
most sensitive, reliable and productive NDT-methods for
surface inspection of products from ferromagnetic
materials. The method is based on the attraction of
ferromagnetic particles by force of leakage flux which
appears above surface defects like cracks, laps, lacks of
fusion, pores after an adequate magnetization. MT can be
used for indication of open surface defects and under
certain conditions for detection of near-surface defects. A
higher probability of detection is given, when the direction
of a defect is perpendicular to the direction of the applied
magnetic field. The smaller is the angle between the defect
and magnetic field lines, the weaker is the indication.

Microscope imaging of cracks Cracks indication by fluorescent MT method

The magnetic particle testing is a separate processing procedure which consists of following parts: 1. Preparation of the test
objects surfaces for testing; 2. Magnetization of the object; 3. Application of magnetic particle suspension (powder) onto the
test object; 4. Inspection; 5. Demagnetization.

Circular, longitudinal or combined magnetization is used for the magnetic particle testing. There are a lot of magnetization
schemes, some of which are shown below.

For the magnetic particle testing the
HELLING Company offers a complete
line of fluorescent inspection media in
form of dry powders, liquid and dry
concentrates and ready-to-use oil-based
suspensions.
The HELLING Dry Magnetic Powders
excel in their high fluorescence
coefficient, defined grain size
distribution as well as purity and assure
the indication even of the finest defects.
The liquid and dry concentrates for
preparing of water-based magnetic
particle suspensions contain all
necessary wetting, antifoam and antirust
agents. These concentrates are used
even for the inspection of corrosion-
sensitive parts. The usage of
concentrates also helps to cut down the
shipping and storing costs considerably.
The ready-to-use suspensions
are an ideal inspection material
for testing on construction sites
and mounting pads or for
sampling inspection. The
suspensions are based on
colorless, odor-free, non-irritant,
low-viscosity oils. The oils have
no intrinsic fluorescence, that is
why the very contrasting and
brilliant defect indication is
achieved.
Furthermore the HELLING
delivery program also includes
aerosol systems (V.O.C. free)
for quick, handy and efficient
magnetic particle testing, even in
the field conditions.
The inspection media from

HAND MAGNETIZING DEVICES

HAND YOKE ELECTROMAGNETS

With the HANSA series the HELLING
Company presents a new generation
of hand yoke electromagnets,
which excel by many advantages as
compared with the previous series:
they are more lightweight, handy,
powerful!
An important ergonomic feature of
this series is the special narrow
handle, which facilitates a fatigue-
free working even for small hands.
The series includes the UM 8, UM 9,
UM 10 and UM 15 hand yokes. The
UM 8, 9 and 10 hand yokes differ in
dimensions (pole spacing and
length), in weight and in lifting
strength. Optionally the devices can
be fitted with two-limbs flexible legs,
whose lower limbs can be swung inwards and outwards by
45. The pole spacing can be hereby increased or decreased
by approximately 60 cm. Due to 45 inclination of the
contact surface the legs fit optimal the geometry of the
object under testing.
The UM 15 hand yoke is provided
with three-limbs flexible legs in
standard execution. Hereby the poles
distance can be set in the range from
95 up to 250 mm.
All hand yokes of HANSA series meet
also with flexible legs by maximum
pole spacing the requirements of
general guidelines and standards (EN
ISO 9934-3, ASTM 709 and ASME-
Code, Sect. V). Here a lifting
strength of min. 45 N (4,5 kg) or a
tangential field strength of min. 20
A/cm (EN ISO 9934-3) is required as
operational capability proof.
The HANSA hand yokes are
completely sealed, being fed with
main voltage of 230 Volt and possess
the IP 65 protection class. They can be used (with the
exception of UM 8 (60 sec./30% ED) with the maximum
turn-on time of 150 sec. and maximum duty cycle of 50%.
The cable can be uncoupled in order to prevent breaking of
the connecting bushing.

HAND MAGNETIZING DEVICES

KMU 8/42 CROSS YOKE

The KMU 8/42 Cross Yoke represents a supplement to the
HANSA Series the new generation of hand yoke
magnetizing devices. The KMU 8/42
consists of two alternating current
yokes disposed crosswise with pole
spacing of 170 mm.
They are fed by 2 equipotent
alternating currents with 90 phase
shift, what results in rotating
magnetization vector, whose field
strength is equal in all directions.
This magnetization technique
enables the detection of
discontinuities of every orientation.
In practice it means: simultaneous
indication of longitudinal,
transversal and oblique cracks in
the course of only one operation.
Therefore the KMU 8/42 Cross Yoke
is especially appropriate for
inspection of lengthy welded joints,
for example in pipe manufacturing,
tank and pressure vessel building or
ship building. The long-duration duty
cycle of up to 60% advantages the
application in these production fields.
The magnetic field is being applied into the part under test
over a short air gap. Thereto the yoke poles are provided
with adjustable castors. The castors
maintain a constant air gap between
the poles and the part surface and
enable the yoke to be moved easily.
The assembled Cross Yoke reaches a
tangential field strength of 32 A/cm
and a lifting strength of more than
300 N (30.6 kg). Even with the air
gap of 5 mm the tangential field
strength is still 22 A/cm!
The KMU 8/42 Cross Yoke is
completely sealed, being fed by an
additional transformer with 3 x 42 V
alternating voltage and possesses
the IP 54 protection class. The Cross
Yoke and the transformer are
coupled with a flexible cable 5 m
long. The transformer meets criteria
of the IP 23 protection class and
requires the primary voltage of 3 x
400 V.

INDUCTIVE UV and WHITE LIGHT LED SOURCES

Inductive UV or White Light LED
Sources are used while working with
hand yoke or cross yoke
electromagnets. The network
independent light sources have been
designed for simultaneous irradiation
(illumination) of the working area
during testing with fluorescent or
colour magnetic particle powder by
single handed operation only. The
adjustable swivel head ensures the
correct irradiation angle depending on
distance between poles and length of
legs of yoke in order to get an
optimum homogeneous irradiation field
right in the center of the working area.
The splash protected (IP 65) light
source fit on all hand yokes with a pole
cross section up to 50 x 50 mm.
The light sources can be fixed quickly and
easily at the yoke leg and fastened with
two plastic screws.
When switching on the yoke i.e. during
magnetizing, post-magnetizing and
examination cycles the unit is being fed
by inductive current and illuminates or
irradiates the working area. Therefore
neither battery nor mains supply is
needed.
The light sources have proved themselves
especially in testing under restricted space
conditions, on construction sites and
improvised test places, where only limited
possibilities for auxiliary instrument using
are available.

HAND MAGNETIZING DEVICES

PERMANENT MAGNETS

The Flaw Finder permanent magnets are a simple
solution for the effective, easy and quick parts magnetization
for detection of surface and subsurface defects.
The conception of the Flaw Finders makes it possible to use
the devices for testing such objects, where the application of
electromagnetic yokes is impracticable or prohibited for
safety reasons.

MOBILE MAGNETIZING DEVICES

CROSS YOKE NR 01

The NR 01 Cross Yoke is used for contact and non-contact magnetization of different parts.
It is fed by two equipotent alternating currents that are dephased by 90, what results in
rotating magnetization vector, whose field strength is equal in all directions. This
magnetization technique enables the detection of discontinuities of every orientation in the
course of only one operation.
That is why the NR 01 Cross Yoke will especially do for inspection ob tube ends, tooth
gears and different cylinder parts. The NR 01 Cross Yoke is designed for a long-duration
duty cycle of up to 90%.
The NR 01 Cross Yoke is completely sealed, being fed by an additional transformer with
3 x 42 V alternating voltage and possesses the IP 54 protection class.

CROSS SHAPED COIL

The cross shaped coil is being used for non-contact magnetization of bars, billets, ingots or
cylindrical parts. It is being fed by two equipotent alternating currents that are dephased
by 90, generating a rotating magnetizing vector on the horizontal plane and thereby
indicating surface cracks of any orientation. By rotating the part within the coil the whole
surface can be tested (except for end faces).

HETT DEMAGNETIZING TUNNELS

The demagnetization effect of the AC demagnetizing tunnels is based on the principle of
subjecting the part to a reversing and decreasing magnetic field. This can be accomplished
by pulling a part out and away from a coil with AC passing through it.
The AC magnetic field penetration at 50 Hz frequency is about 2 mm (on steel). In order to
increase the penetration depth an additional low-frequency generator with 16 Hz should
be used.

During current flow magnetization the contact electrodes
(see P.35) are being attached to the edges of the test
piece, thus the part itself becomes a current-carrying
conductor. The circular magnetic field generated around
the part allows the detection of longitudinal cracks
between the contact poles. This technique makes it also
possible to find the defects which are located at an angle of
up to 60 degrees off the axial line. In order to avoid
overheating, burns or electric arcs in the contact area it is
important to ensure proper current transition by using copper
braid pads or melt-off electrodes.
When using HELLMAG equipment for field flow magnetization,
power cables are being used as inner or outer conductors or as
a cable coil respectively. Inner conductor: this way of
magnetizing is used for testing ring shaped work pieces.
Thereto the power cable should be put through the center hole
(bore) of the work piece. Thereby cracks that are located
mainly parallel to the conductor are being detected. Outer
conductor: this way of magnetizing is often used for testing
weld seams. Here one or more power cables should be
positioned parallel to the weld. Thereby longitudinal cracks are
being detected. In order to avoid field compensations, the
current reverse flow cable is to be located as far away as
possible from the magnetizing cable. Cable coils: while coil
magnetizing, a current-carrying conductor should be wound
like a coil with an appropriate number of windings. After
energizing the coil, circular magnetic fields will be generated
around each coil winding. In the center of the coil these
magnetic fields add on to a general longitudinal magnetic field,
therefore cracks located across the magnetic field i.e.
transversal cracks are being indicated.
HELLMAG devices can be combined with a variety of testing
equipment such as the chain testing device, closed or hinged
coils, trapezoidal coils for testing of railway wheels (see also
pages 35 to 36).
The testing current can be infinitely adjusted through a foot-
switch operated potentiometer (when the magnetizing circuit
is closed). A selector switch changes between the different
modes: Magnetizing Demagnetizing Pulse. The devices are
equipped with 230 V plug sockets for connecting additional
equipment such as an UV lamp or a suspension pump.

STATIONARY MAGNETIZING FACILITIES

ZER-O-MAT MAGNETIZING AND REPAIR STATION

ZER-O-MAT

devices are magnetizing and inspection

stations designed for the magnetic particle inspection of
pipes, rods, bars and other tubular parts with the diameter
from 20 up to 660 mm. The devices enable the user to find
surface flaws of multidirectional orientation in one operation
within shortest time. The use of these devices is not limited
to round shaped products. They can be also applied for the
inspection of stocks and bars with square, rectangular or
even irregular shape. Furthermore the ZER-O-MAT

stations
are perfectly appropriate for pipe-end testing.
Besides the use for local inspection at repair stations, the
devices can also be used for full length inspection of tubular
products, and in both cases an immediate repair, i.e.
directly after the (re-)inspection, is possible.
Essential part of the device is the ZER-O-MAT

solenoid
coil, developed and patented by Helling GmbH. This coil has
a characteristic U-shape, so that products to be inspected
can be dipped into the coil from above. The non-contact
magnetization with the coil prevents burns on the tube
surface and enables to detect surface flaws of
multidirectional orientation within shortest time. The
tangential field strength is min. 24 A/cm. ZER-O-MAT

-
coils are operated with AC-current. This means that due to
the skin-effect just a surface layer of the material is being
magnetized. Therefore no demagnetization is necessary
after inspection.
For magnetization and inspection the tube is getting turned.
The showering with a magnetic particle suspension goes on
at the coil bottom (04.00 08.00h-position). The
indications can be observed and evaluated in the turning-
position above the coil (10.00 12.00h-position).
If not just a tube section but the complete surface of the
tube shall be inspected, the tube must be helically moved
through the coil. In this case the magnetizing system is
designed for 100% make-time.
The ZER-O-MAT

is equipped with an up-to-date, high

power Slim-Line UV LED lamp. The lamp is vibration
resistant and insensible to electromagnetic fields. Having
no warm up time the lamp is immediately ready for
operation.

Specifications:
Mains connection 400 V / 50 Hz
Control voltage 230 V / 50 Hz

REFERENCE BLOCKS AND FIELD INDICATORS

Reference and test blocks are used for the quality analysis of the magnetic particle suspensions as well as for the estimation of MT
overall performance.

Reference Block No.1 (DIN EN ISO 9934-2)

Reference Block No.2 (DIN EN ISO 9934-2)

Berthold Magnetic Field Indicator (Penetrameter)

Art.No. 134.002.002

The reference block No.1 is a disc with 2 types of natural cracks on the surface.
Coarse cracks are the result of the polishing, fine cracks are the result of stress
corrosion. The block is permanently magnetized by central conductor through the
hole. Estimation of magnetic particle suspensions is made by visual or other
appropriated method of comparison of the indications.

Specifications:
Sample diameter: 50 mm
Sample height: 10 mm
Cracks width: 2-10 m

Art.No. 134.002.100

Reference block No. 2 is a self contained unit requiring no external magnetic field
induction. It is used to determine the quality of the magnetic particle suspensions.
The block consists of 2 soft iron bars, separated by a thin (15m) Al-foil,
representing an artificial defect. Permanent magnets are set on the sample ends.
Because of the permanent magnetic field the bars get magnetized and magnetic
particles accumulate over the artificial defect, forming the indication lines. The
quality of the suspension or dry powder is estimated over the summarized length of
the lines.

Specifications:
Dimensions (LWH): 1554012 mm
Tangential component of magnetic field
over the artificial defect at points G (-4): -1/m
(4): 1/cm
Art.No. 134.003.000

The Berthold indicator is designed to determine the strength and direction of the
selected magnetizing setup and the quality of fluorescent magnetic powder
suspension.
When placed on a magnetized test piece, magnetic lines pass through the sectioned
iron cylinder. The cuts on the iron cylinder will be visible when magnetic powder or
fluorescent magnetic solution is applied. Maximum indication direction is achieved by
rotating the sample about its axis. The field direction is perpendicular to the flaw at
maximum indication. Magnetizing efficiency, penetration and quality of the
fluorescent oil suspension can be determined by slowly turning the outside ring of
the field indicator, increasing the distance between the thin brass plate and the test
piece. The amount of lift-off at the point where the indication just appears gives a
measure of magnetic field test efficiency.

Sample diameter: 20 mm
Sample height: 5 mm
Holder length: 95 mm

D 250 Magnetic Field Indicator (ASME Indicator)

Burmah-Castrol Magnetic Flux Indicators

Ketos Ring (ASTM E 1444-01)

Art.No. 134.003.100

The ASME indicator is used for localization of magnetic fields and their directions
during performance of magnetic particle testing.
Suitable magnetic flux is obtained when the indicator is laid copper side up on the
work piece in the area of interest and a clearly defined indication is formed across its
face when magnetic particle suspension is applied.
The magnetic field indicator type D 250 is designed in accordance with the following
specifications:
MIL-STD-271 E, 4.3.2.5.5, figure 8
NAVSHIPS 250-1500-1, 12.4.1.5, figure 12 17
ASME, section V, Art. 25, SA-275, figure 8
Specifications:
Sample diameter: 27 mm
Sample height: 4 mm
Holder length: 100 mm
Weight: 42 g

Art.No. 134.002.110 - Typ I
Art.No. 134.002.120 - Typ II

Burmah-Castrol strips are widely used to indicate the presence of induced magnetic
fields giving an evidence of an external field in the air above the magnetized surface.
Type I indicators are typically used for general engineering applications and Type II
are used for aerospace applications. Both types consist of three laminations
measuring 50x12 mm which are fixed together to form a sandwich structure which is
nominally 0.15 mm thick. The outer lamination has 3 interruptions which are parallel
to the long side. Type I indicators respond to a weaker field than Type II strips. Both
types are protected by a polymeric layer and can be differentiated by the Roman
numeral.
Flux Indicators have the advantage of being flexible enough so that they can be bent
to fit the contours of a work piece, but robust enough to enable them to be used
many times.

Art.No. 134.004.000

Ketos ring is made of AISI 01 tool steel, hardness 90 to 95 HRB. It is a magnetic
field indicator, but in reality determines the efficiency of the complete MP testing
procedure. The sample is a 22 mm thick ring ( 127 mm) containing 12 holes
( 1.75 mm) drilled at different distance from the ring edge.
The magnetizing current passes through the center of the ring via a central
conductor and the leakage fields appear, decreasing as the distance from the hole to
the ring edge increases. When the magnetic suspension is applied on the ring,
magnetic powder accumulates on the ring edge over the cylindrical holes, forming
indication lines.
The process corresponding to the recovery of recommended number of holes is
accepted as optimal.

43

UV radiation is an invisible electromagnetic radiation in the
wave length range from 100 nm to 400 nm. This range is being
divided into the sub-ranges UV-A, UV-B and UV-C.

UV radiation is being applied in various areas of industry,
science and medicine such as food industry, textile industry,
mineralogy, forensics. In addition to that UV radiation is being
applied in the field of spectroscopy, X-ray microscopy,
nanoscopy, photo lithography, as well as for disinfecting and for
polymerisation of synthetic materials, lacquers, glues etc.

Needless to say that UV sources are used in NDT for excitation
of inspection media fluorescence. Testing is to be carried out by
the means of UV-A radiation (315 to 400 nm) with nominal
maximum radiation intensity at 365 nm. On the surface to be
inspected the irradiation intensity must be larger than 1000
W/cm at ambient illumination of less than 20 Lx.

Nowadays along with state-of-the-art UV LED lamps (page
48) the conventional low-pressure, medium-pressure and
high-pressure metal-halide lamps are also used in all kinds
of industrial applications. Normally those are mercury gas-
discharge lamps with/without additional doping elements
such as gallium, indium, iron and led.

The charts below show examples of spectral irradiation
intensity of two common medium-pressure mercury gas-
discharge lamps with optical filters: left without doping,
right with Fe-doping.

Helling mercury-vapour lamps are equipped with special UV-
bandpass filters und UVB-edge filters. Therefore harmful
emissions in UVC and UVB range are close to zero.

All UV-lamps are subject to thorough quality control and
upon request can be supplied with an analysis certificate
about the spectral irradiation intensity.

Over the past few years the powerful compact UV LED lamps
have proved themselves remarkably especially for
magnetic particle testing and penetrant inspection by use of
fluorescent materials.
The most important advantages of these lamps are the low
power consumption (what enables battery or accumulator
feeding), a very long lifetime, no warm-up time and above
all the defined UV wavelength in the UV-A range (365 nm)
with the emission half-width of 8.5 nm. This wavelength
enables the maximum contrast between the crack indication
and its background.
Through the narrow-bounded emission spectrum of UV light-
emitting diodes there is no irradiation part, which bounds to
visible range (from 400 nm) or lies within. The irradiation
part in the visible range results in undesirable brightening
and reflection, especially while testing metallic shiny, curved
objects. Such reflections are not only perceived by an
inspector as artifacts, they also reduce the contrast and
therefore affect adversely the defect recognition.

Leak detection in cooling system
by use of fluorescent concentrate

Leak testing is a form of non-
destructive testing used for the
detection and location of leaks and
for measurement of fluid leakage in
either pressurized or evacuated
systems and components. A leak
may be a crack, crevice, fissure, hole
or passageway that admits water, air
or other fluids or lets fluids escape.
The word leakage refers to the flow
of fluid or gas through a leak without
regard to the physical size of the
hole through which flow occurs.
Leaks are special types of flows that
can have tremendous importance
where they influence the safety or
performance of engineering systems.
The operational reliability of many
devices is greatly reduced if
sufficiently large leaks exist. The end
purpose of leak testing is to ensure
reliability and serviceability of
components and to prevent premature
failure of systems containing fluids
under pressure or vacuum. Leakage
has now become a serious concern
in the fabrication of nuclear reactor
components, unfired pressure
vessels, and vessels containing lethal
substances. Leak testing is also used
on other components or systems
utilized in processing of fluid
materials that are affected by the
presence of contaminants that react
with the product. Leak tests are now
made on pyrotechnic devices,
electronic components, automotive
air conditioners, food packages and
other test objects.
The high variety of products to be
sealed hermetically requires
development of diverse methods and
equipment for leak testing.

The table below provides an insight into correlation of leakage rate, leak size and actual leak appearance.

BUBBLE EMISSION METHOD OF LEAK TESTING

In leak testing by the bubble emission method, a gas
pressure differential is first established across a pressure
boundary to be tested. A test liquid is then applied on the
lower pressure side. Gas leakage through the pressure
boundary can then be detected by observation of bubbles
formed in the detection liquid at the exit points of leakage.
The method is used for testing the leak tightness of
pressurized reservoirs, hydraulic and gas systems. In the
foam-film application technique, a thin layer of foam-film
indicator liquid is applied on the low-pressure surface of the
test object. For detection of small leaks, this liquid should
form a thin, continuous, wetted film covering all areas to be
examined. The probing medium (gas) flows through the leak
due to the pressure differential and forms visible bubbles in
the foam-film indicator liquid.

A pressure differential can be also created using a vacuum
pump with special vacuum frames. This technique is used
for the detection of through-thickness discontinuities in
welds and pressure boundaries of systems containing air at
atmospheric pressure and such systems that cannot be
pressurized. It may be used for increasing the sensitivity of
penetrant leak testing technique. As on this method a
bubble-forming solution (foam-film indicator) is applied to
the surface to be examined. A vacuum frame with a viewing
window is placed over the test surface and then evacuated.
The test surface is viewed for evidence of through-thickness
discontinuities by the formation of bubbles in the foam-film
solution.

ACOUSTIC METHOD OF LEAK TESTING

Acoustic emission test technique can be applied to detect
leaks in pressurized or evacuated systems by locating
sources of sonic or ultrasonic vibrations created by
turbulent flow of gases or liquids passing through leaks.
Use is made of ultrasonic detectors to reveal airborne and
structure-borne vibrations, and translators that convert
these inaudible high-frequency sounds to lower frequencies
within the range of human hearing or to an electric signal.
Remote acoustic sensing of fluid or gas leakage often offers
practical advantages over other leak testing methods that
require close access to surfaces and visual observations of
leakage indications while testing pipelines, boilers, vessels,
pressurized systems, manifolds.

PROBE METHOD

HYDROGEN LEAK DETECTORS

At present time the hydrogen leak detectors are accepted as
the industrial standard for leak detection purposes. A gas
mixture of 95% nitrogen and 5% hydrogen is used as a
tracer gas. Such a gas mixture is neither flammable nor toxic

or corrosive, moreover it is cheaper. Hydrogen leak
detectors are used both for leak detection in small-sized
items like gates, valves, seals and for leakage tests of large
objects like fuel tanks, boilers, engines.

HELIUM LEAK DETECTORS

The helium probe detectors are designed for locating leaks
in the pressurized objects containing helium. The probe is a
gas intake with a determined throughput performance
providing the passage of gas quantity which is optimal for
testing.

The basis of this leak detector type is the so called Selective Ion Pump Detector
SIPD. The principle of operation is the following: helium penetrates through a special
quartz membrane which is heated up to a certain temperature and so becomes
permeable for helium molecules only. Helium passing through the membrane is
ionized in an electron-ionizing transducer. The ionic current value through helium
ionizing correlates with helium content. The signal amplitude represents the leak
size. The leak detectors of this type are easy-to-operate and provide high sensitivity
and selectivity,

LEAK TESTING WITH LIQUID TRACERS

USE OF FLUORESCENT TRACERS IN HYDROSTATIC TEST FLUIDS

Testing for leaks by use of dyed liquid tracers is a NDT
process that is closely related to the liquid penetrant
inspection process used to detect discontinuities open to
the surface in test objects. For leak testing, however, the
liquid penetrant is applied to one side of the enclosing wall
of a test object or test system and, after adequate time for
the penetrant to seep through leaks, visual inspection for
leak locations is carried out on the opposite side of the
enclosure wall.
Fluorescent water-based or oil-based concentrates, which
are a composition of luminophores, surface-active agents
and corrosion inhibitors, can be added to the pressurized
liquid used in hydrostatic pressure tests. During
hydrostatic pressure tests (which often serve as proof tests
simulating application of service stresses), the test operator
can visually examine all welds under UV irradiation, and the
leaks will be indicated by brilliant fluorescent indications.
This method is widely applied for testing hydraulic systems,
engines, boilers and vessels.
The method sensitivity is about 10
-5
mPa/s.

Wire type Image Quality Indicators acc. to DIN EN462-1

Wire type Image Quality Indicators acc. to ASME /ASTM E-747

Wire type indicators according to DIN EN 462-1 are designed for X-ray image quality
control. The image quality indicators comprise seven parallel mulidiameter wires 10,
25 or 50 mm long made of FE, AL, CU or TI, which are encapsulated in thin,
transparent plastic along with a radio-opaque identification plaque.
Most models are encapsulated with cast, white metal identification plaques which
contain information about the standard, number of wire of the biggest diameter,
material and length. For example, EN W10 FE 50 means an indicator containing wire
W10 to W16 in steel with a wire length of 50mm.

Duplex Image Quality Indicator acc. to DIN EN462-5

Plaque type Image Quality Indicators (penetrameters) acc. to ASTM / ASME

rt.No. 220.049.400
The duplex image quality indicator is used for measuring image unsharpness. It is a
particularly useful tool for establishing and monitoring the performance of
radioscopic (real-time) systems. The indicator consists of 13 platinum or tungsten
wire pairs of different diameters embedded in rigid plastic. The wires spacing in each
pair corresponds exactly to its wires diameter. The degree of unsharpness is
indicated by the number of wire pairs that can be seen. As unsharpness increases,
the wires merge to form a single image.

The penetrameters made of iron and alloy steel are used for all ferrite and austenitic
steels. The lead numerals indicate the penetrameter number which corresponds to
penetrameter thickness. The penetrameters are characterised by having three holes:
1x, 2x and 4x the thickness (T) of the material from which the penetrameter is
made, with minimum diameters of 0.01, 0.02 and 0.04 in.

2 Calibration Block acc. to DIN EN 27963

Art.No. 310.059.121
Small angle beam calibration block, 25 and 50 mm radii, for range calibration
with an angle beam transducer and beam index point and refracted angle
measuring.
Provides known targets that produce echo indications used for instrument
setup, transducer evaluation and reference for evaluating flaw size.

The IntBond 2000 system is designed for testing of multi-layered structures bond
quality.
Ultrasonic resonance spectroscopy (URS) utilizes information in the frequency
domain obtained due to the constructive and destructive interference of elastic
waves for nondestructive evaluation of inspected objects. In a resonance test an
ultrasonic tone-burst with sweeping frequency is applied to an ultrasonic transducer
and a resonance spectrum of the inspected structure is acquired. The acquired
spectrum contains information about the properties of materials used for the
structure and flaws that may be present in it.
Narrowband ultrasonic spectroscopy can be used for the NDT of aerospace multi-
layered structures. The INT-Bond-Tester is used for this test operate on the principle
of exciting a mechanical resonance in a multi-layered structure. A piezoelectric
probe, excited by a swept frequency signal is coupled to the surface of the inspected
structure using a coupling agent. The instrument acquires probes frequency
spectrum in the range of some tens of kHz to several hundreds of kHz. A resonance
in the layered structure occurs when echoes between two boundaries travel back and
forth due to the difference in acoustic impedances at the boundaries.
