ACADEMICS
Our districts academic program provides opportunities for all students to reach
their full potential.

In 2014, the district received an overall grade of A for academic achievement from the
Ohio Department of Education (ODE), with a performance index of 113, the highest from
a public school district in the state of Ohio.

Nearly 83% of students in grades K-12 scored in the Accelerated or Advanced levels in
reading and math on Ohios state administered tests.

Wyoming High School ranked nationally again in 2013-14 in publications including U.S.
News & World Report, The Washington Post and Newsweek.

Wyoming City Schools was recognized by Forbes Magazine in 2013-14 as one of the Best
Schools for Your Housing Buck.

Locally, Wyoming City Schools was recognized in 2014 by Cincinnati Magazine and
Cincy Magazine as one of the top districts in the area.

As part of the districts strategic plan, Wyoming City
Schools began an initiative in 2013-14 to embed design
challenges into the K-12 curriculum. Design challenges
are inter-disciplinary, hands-on projects that involve
science, technology, engineering, arts and math (STEAM)
and encourage students to solve real-world problems.

23 members of the class of 2014 were
recognized by the National Merit Corporation and
nine were named National Merit Finalists.

42% of students in the class of 2014 earned
a 4.0 GPA or higher.

13 male students in the class of 2014 were
named Eagle Scouts.

41% of students from the class of 2014 were recognized as members of the National
Honor Society.

87% of the class of 2014 received academic college scholarships, totaling at least $13
million for four years of support.

39.3% of college applications were accepted at Barrons Most Competitive colleges.

41.4% of applications were accepted at colleges and universities ranked in the top 50 by
U.S. News & World Report.

533 college applications were accepted at 143 universities in 2013-14.

25 Advanced Placement courses offered at the high school.

76% of the students who took at least one Advanced Placement exam last year scored a
three or higher, earning college credit.

154 students took the ACT and the average composite score was 26.2, 4.2 points higher
than the state average.

Accelerated Math classes available for students grades 5-12.

The average SAT score for 2013-14: Critical Reading: 604, Math: 611, Writing: 583.

Two primary schools have been named National Blue Ribbon Schools of Excellence.

ARTS
Participation in performing and visual arts inspires students creativity, problem-
solving and critical thinking skills.

Twelve fine arts courses were offered at WHS, including three advanced placement
courses: AP Studio art 2-D Design, AP Studio Art, 3-D Design and AP Studio Art Drawing.

WHS students earned 37 state or national art awards last year, including two high school
and two middle school students with art on display nationally.

One students poetry was selected by the National Scholastic Art & Writing Awards to be
published in The Best of Teen Writing of 2013 and was on display with the National
Department of Education.

One student won an American Visions Award, given by the National Scholastic Art &
Writing Awards. The painting was displayed at the Presidents Committee on the Arts and
Humanities in Washington, D.C.

More than 30 strings, orchestra, choir, musical or drama productions take place each
year across the primary, middle and high schools.

WHS choir and orchestra performed in New York City at the Blessed Sacrament
Cathedral and completed a workshop with the Broadway cast of Newsies.

In 2013-14, Wyoming welcomed nationally-acclaimed authors and musicians to the
district to work with students, including rock group Section Quartet, Cincinnati Symphony
Orchestra Chamber Group Eighth Blackbird, renowned author Tim Green, and author
and illustrator Steve Harpster.

The majority of middle school students spend at least 3.5 hours in fine and performing arts
classes each week.

The Wyoming Middle School renovation
project includes four new 1,000 square-foot
performing arts classrooms and two renovated
1,300 square-foot fine arts classrooms as well as
a 750 square-foot art gallery for student and
community displays.

Six middle school Power of the Pen students
competed at the state competition. Wyoming Middle School was chosen to be the host
for a 2015 Power of the Pen competition.

Students in grades one through four are in visual and performing arts courses one hour
per week. Primary students participate in annual student art shows and music
performances.

Beginning in the fourth grade, students can choose to participate in strings, band or
chorus and continue through 12th grade with performances and weekly instruction.

Regular performing arts assemblies take place for additional enrichment in the primary
schools.

STUDENT LEADERSHIP AND ACTIVITIES
A well-rounded education includes a wide variety of opportunities.
In 2013-14, Wyoming students K-12 raised more than $100,000 in support of organizations
including: BeTheMatch, Adopt-A-Family, Pennies for Patients, Caps for a Cure, Freestore
Foodbank, Miracles in Action, The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, Greater Cincinnati
Homeless Coalition, Valley Interfaith Food and Clothing Center, InterCity Youth
Opportunities, Tender Heart School in India, The Childrens Foundation of Technology in
Sierra Leone, Africa, St. Francis Seraph School in Over-The-Rhine, The Ronald McDonald
House, American Heart Association, Alzheimers Association, American Cancer Society,
Girls on the Run, and The Cure Starts Now.
Wyoming High School
More than 30 clubs are available to students at WHS, including a variety of service and
leadership opportunities. A new leadership opportunity, Captains Council, was
launched in 2013-14.

Fifteen sports are available to high school students,
totaling 46 high school athletic teams at the
freshman, junior varsity and varsity levels (girls and
boys). High school students can participate in any
of the following athletic options: football,
basketball, baseball, volleyball, wrestling, softball,
golf, swimming & diving, lacrosse, cross country,
bowling, track and field, soccer, cheerleading and
tennis.

78% of high school students participated in at least one club or athletic activity in 2013-
14.

More than 34 athletic scholarships have been offered to graduating seniors in the last
four years, including 14 in 2014. Recent graduates are playing soccer, football, volleyball,
basketball, baseball, and competing in swimming at the collegiate level.

Trips for the students include an annual 12
th
grade trip to Washington, D.C. and annual
attendance at the Ohio Latin Convention and the Ohio Model U.N. Competition in
Columbus, OH.

Opportunities for students to travel abroad with teacher support, including a 2014 spring
break Spanish trip to Costa Rica.

Regular guest speakers and assemblies, including the annual Wyoming Schools
Foundation distinguished alumni presentation for all students.

38 graduating seniors from the class of 2014 were named Presidential Volunteer Award
winners for their commitment to service learning.

The annual Relay for Life student-led campaign took place, with more than 30
participating teams.

Annual Shantytown event for high school students was held to recognize homelessness.
Wyoming Middle School

84% of students in 7

grades participated in athletics and clubs in 2013-14.

Sixteen athletic teams available for middle school students (girls and boys).

Twelve middle school clubs available for students, including a number of leadership and
service opportunities, such as Model U.N., Student Council and Make-it-Happen.

The middle school gifted program for qualifying students included participation in a
career fair focused on science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics (STEAM)
and middle school advertising and urban planning units.

An annual leadership adventure trip to
Camp Kern for students in 6
th
grade.

The TAP program is a guidance
opportunity for 6
th
grade students covering topics
such as self-esteem, peer relationships,
responsibility and consequences, and how to
better serve others. Students work with mentors at
Wyoming High School each year.

The Youth Frontiers Courage Retreat supports bullying prevention and positive behavior
reinforcement.

Popcorn with the Principal is a program that reinforces positive behavior in school.
Wyoming Primary Schools
An annual field day is offered for all students in grades K-4.

School-year activities including Everybody Counts Week, Walk to School Day, 3
rd
grade
annual history tour of Wyoming, Culture Club, Counselors Council, Arbor Day program,
regular field trips and enrichment assemblies.

A gifted program for qualifying students in 3
rd
and 4
th
grade, with frequent activities such
as the Architecture for Kids competition, Word Masters, and learn to be an engineer
project.

Wyoming Youth Sports League (a program offered by the City of Wyoming) offered for
students grades K-6.

Primary school garden projects were led by students and teachers, in partnership with
the Wyoming Farmers Market.

FISCAL STEWARDSHIP
Financial responsibility ensures that the majority of funding is spent on
classroom instruction.

Percentage spent on instruction: 76%, the highest in Hamilton County.

Effectively manage a $22.8 million budget.

In 2013-14, shared services included a shared treasurer, payroll staff, technology
specialist and food service manager.

Auditor of State Award for timely, accurate and comprehensive financial statements.

Nine years since an operational levy was necessary.

Outstanding community support for bond issues the last issue, a $25 million bond levy,
passed in 2012 with an approval rating of 73%.

All bond, operating and income tax levies have passed since 1970.

Permanent improvement and technology plans have been adopted to provide for
maintenance of buildings as well as technology infrastructure and equipment.

Annual approval of a five-year financial forecast for the district.

Received more than $628,000 in financial support from community organizations
including Wyoming Parent School Association (P.S.A.), Wyoming Athletic Boosters,
Wyoming School Foundation, and Wyoming School Music Association (W.S.M.A.).

PARENT AND COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT
Educational experiences are enhanced by partnerships between the school
district and community.
As an integral part of the educational experience, hundreds of parent volunteers provide
countless hours of service weekly in the primary, middle and high schools.

Wyoming P.S.A. involves hundreds of parent volunteers from all school divisions and
raised a total of more than $110,000 last year for the school district, including $20,000
from the annual Wyoming P.S.A. May Fete event, a carnival tradition. The magazine sale
raises more than $30,000 for the schools.

Wyoming Athletic Booster Association raises more than $75,000 for athletic programs
every year and hosts community-wide events, including family tailgate parties and golf
outings.

W.S.M.A. raises more than $20,000 annually in support of performing arts in the school
district.

The Wyoming Alumni Association actively supports the school district and annually honors
Wyoming alumni during commencement and at the annual alumni athletic awards.

In 2013-2014, the Wyoming School Foundation donated more than
$40,000 to be used for school resources and programs across all
divisions. Hundreds of generous donors contributed to the Wyoming
School Foundations endowment fund and attended fundraising events
such as the Wyoming Fun Run and Denim and Diamonds, the annual
fundraising gala.

The Citizens Advisory Committee (CAC) is a group of residents who annually serve as
liaisons to the Board of Education on issues related to the school district and who
complete projects and surveys in support of
Wyoming City Schools. CAC members join the
committee for two-year stints and are approved by
the Board of Education.

Parent Advisory Committees (PAC) are an active
group of parent volunteers at each division, helping
troubleshoot issues, support the schools, and lead
open houses and monthly coffees with principals.

The Wyoming City Schools Athletic Department works in collaboration with the City of
Wyoming to share resources and athletic facilities.

Wyoming Youth Services is a non-profit, collaborative
organization that offers counseling and after-school programs for students in need. The
organization hosts annual events each spring, such as the pancake breakfast, to raise
funds for these programs.

The Wyoming Alcohol Task Force is a partnership committee between parents, the City of
Wyoming, parents, Wyoming City Schools, and Wyoming Youth Services designed to help
educate students and parents on the dangers of drugs and alcohol.

STUDENT SERVICES
A variety of services provide options to ensure all students receive individualized
instruction, enrichment and support.
Students identified as gifted in 2013-14: 48.1%.

Students receiving services from a gifted interventionist, who qualify based on cognitive
ability and standardized test scores: 10.71% in grades 2-6.

Foreign language and accelerated math courses available for high school credit in
grades 7 and 8.

Students identified with disabilities under IDEA 7.6%

Full-time counselors available for students in grades K-12. One full-time and one part-time
school psychologists in the district.

A partnership with MindPeace and The Childrens Home of Cincinnati
to provide mental health support services to students K-12.

School nurses and health aides in primary, middle and high schools.

Speech and language pathologists are available in all five district school buildings.

Positive behavior support program implemented in
grades K-8, including a new character education
program called caring cowboys in primary school.

Two full-time counselors and a college advisor
available to guide students and parents through the
college choice process.

Regular college counseling events and application boot camps take place for students
preparing to go to college. The annual WHS Senior Signing Day celebrates student school
choices.

Reading and math screenings in primary and middle school determine if interventions
are needed. Reading specialists available for students if needed.

Middle school Cowboy Bell is available to 5

and 6

grade students for added
enrichment, extension and intervention.

Before and After School Care program available for students grades K-6.

Language screenings for all kindergarten students.

Child Find partnerships with area preschools and St. James School to identify students
with disabilities.

Wyoming City Schools continues to meet all Ohio Department of Education/Office of
Exceptional Children Determinations for Special Education Compliance Indicators.


STAFF LEADERSHIP
Student growth and achievement are facilitated by high-quality staff members
85% of cl assroom teachers have Masters Degrees or hi gher.

100% of teachers and substitute teachers are certified.

In 2013-14, Superintendent Dr. Susan Lang was awarded the Buckeye Association of
School Administrators Female Superintendent of the Year Award.

One teacher competed on Jeopardy! in 2013-14 and successfully reached the semi-
finals of the competition.

Annual online training is completed by 100% of teachers.

Peer-to-peer training takes place at each division.

Five AP test-grading teachers at Wyoming High School, selected by The College Board.

Two innovation grants awarded in 2013-14 to teachers to support creative classroom
lessons.

Wyoming City Schools offers one full-time English as a Second Language (ESL) tutor.

Teachers completed professional development on design challenges and assessment
writing in 2013-14.
