What are the best practices for a high availability upgrade / migration from UCM 6.x /
7.x / 8.x to virtualized UCM 9.x?

Great question to begin this forum! There are many "right" answers for this sort of query. I
would say its important to understand your current setup, business requirements and review
the documentation out there on CCO. I have always shared the following links on CSC for
such questions, hopefully these will help you derive the right plan of action in the best interest

This is the release notes for CM 9.1. It covers the upgrade processes you can follow.

This doc tells you if you can directly upgrade to the version you want.

As for phone firmware, you could either let the phones upgrade to the bundled firmware. If you
do not wish to do so, then download the current firmware version from CCO and upload those

In order to get the licenses, you can do a "show version" on the Publisher CLI and provide the
MAC address given in that output for licensing.

Generate answer file

The following procedure describes how to generate an answer file using the Cisco Unified
Communications Answer File Generator.

Before You Begin :

Gather the required installation and configuration information.

Procedure :

Step 1 Access the Cisco Unified Communications Answer File Generator at the following
URL: http://www.cisco.com/web/cuc_afg/index.html.

Step 2 Enter the required information for the node(s) that you wish to install.

You can specify installation and configuration information for the publisher node and up to 5
subscriber nodes in a cluster.

If DHCP client is used on the publisher server, and subsequent server answer files are also
generated, you must specify the publisher server IP address.
Step 3 Select Generate Answer Files.
Step 4 Follow the instructions to download the answer file(s).

A separate answer file will be generated for each node that you want to install and configure.
Reformat USB key to FAT32 file system
You may need to reformat the USB key for the answer file to the FAT32 file system using the
Windows XP Disk Management Utility. The FAT file system format provides for larger storage
capacity (for example, 1 Gigabyte). You may need to be an Administrator or a member of the
Administrators group to perform this procedure.

Procedure
Step 1 Insert the USB key into a USB slot on the Windows XP computer.
Step 2 Select Start > Control Panel > Administrative Tools and double-select Computer
Management.
Step 3 Expand the Storage tree and select Disk Management.
Step 4 Right-click the Removable Disk icon and select Format.
Step 5 Select Yes if you are asked whether you are sure that you want to format this
partition.
Step 6 Select the File System and select FAT32 from the list box. .
Step 7 Select OK and OK again when you are prompted to format the volume.

What is the best recommended way to use Un Attended installation...means Remotely
(using answer file)

Hi Harikrishnan, good question: My advice would be to always follow the install and upgrade
guide for the CUCM version you plan to upgrade to. That is the tested and supported way of
doing upgrade / installs. Here are a couple of links depending on what version you plan to

Now that is something I also stumbled onto not too long back It's quite straight forward for
pulling a single phone config file from a server (From CMD type: tftp <ip address="" of=""
tftp="" server=""> get SEP<mac address="" of="" ip="" phone="">.cnf.xml), however, since
you're looking for a list of all the phone config files present in a server, the following HTTP link

Hope this comes in handy!

Another question for you, Harmit: Is MTP mandatory for CUCM to send an early offer
SIP INVITE on SIP trunks?
This is yet another good question. As alot of you may be aware, starting CUCM 8.5, a new
parameter was introduced under the SIP Profile - Early Offer support for voice and video calls
(insert MTP if needed).
Early Offer (EO) is supported (without requiring MTP) when a call is initiated from any of the
following -->

## SIP phones
## SCCP phones (with SCCP v20 support)
## MGCP Gateways
## Incoming H323 fast start calls
## Incoming EO SIP trunk calls

Having said that, for the above case, MTP might be needed due to other reasons such as
DTMF/Codec mismatch or TRP requirement or MTP required on calling side. The following
phones support SCCP v20 with early offer capability:

7906, 7911, 7931, 7941, 7942, 7945, 7961, 7962, 7965, 7970, 7971, 7975 and 69XX
models.

7940/60 phone models do not support it, hence, the MTP gets invoked.

Additionally, when the devices media port information is not available, CUCM inserts MTP for
providing SDP in initial INVITE. For example:

## SCCP phones with pre SCCP v20 firmware.
## Slow start H323 calls
## Delayed offer incoming SIP trunk calls

How i configure sub domain?

Hi Monir, could you please elaborate on your question? If you are referring to adding a sub
domain for the CUCM cluster to be a part of, then AFAIK it is not possible. Please clarify if I
have misunderstood. Thanks much!

While installing a CUCM node on VMware, the install fails. How do you pull the install
logs from the server considering this is a virtualised environment?

It takes a few times to get the hang of it, at least it did for me Hope this helps!

We have a 7942 Cisco phone which is never getting past the upgrading stage, the
phone never picks up the voice vlan. And never gets the upgrade files. We have
checked that the port is configured correctly by placing another phone on the same
port and it register's successfully with the VLAN. Is there anything we can do before
ah yes, this is a tricky one. Ok so, there are 2 types of factory resets -- soft reset and a hard
reset.
The code for the soft factory reset is: 123456789*0#

A soft reset does the following:

1> deletes key files on the phone including /etc/init.tab
2> reboots
3> phone recovers default loads file from TFTP server

Whereas, the code for the total hard reset is: 3491672850*#

A total hard reset formats /flash0 blowing away everything except CNU. All settings and
personalization of the phone is removed.

To initiate a factory reset:

1> Start with the phone in a powered off state.
2> While holding the "#" key down on the keypad, apply power to the phone.
3> Keep the "#" key depressed until you see the LEDs on the phone begin a 'walking'
sequence, where they walk down from top to bottom.
4> After you see the LED walk sequence begin, you can release the "#" key and enter the
hard reset sequence as given above. You have to enter the sequence as is, any deviation
from the given sequence will abort the factory reset and resume a normal boot sequence.

**Important**:
-------------

## In situations where the flash is formatted, the reset GUI that was added will be erased and
thus will not show the phone trying to acquire a load and come back to life. This will make the
phone appear dead and that it is not doing anything. The phone IS doing something. This
appearance can last for as long as 10 to 15 minutes depending on network speed, so please
be patient.

## There have been rare occurrences of the phone being unresponsive even after the 15

minute wait. If you run into this, please do a complete power cycle of the phone and see if the
phone will complete the factory reset after that power cycle. After this power cycle, you do
NOT need to do the keypad operations again, just power cycle the phone and it should
continue. The display will still be blank, so you should give the phone the full 15 minutes to
If the above doesnt do the trick, probably best to RMA the phone. Hope this helps!!
