Treatment System
As in many disasters, contaminated water is
the main and serious issue. The portable
bicycle ultra-filtration systems would allow
more victims to have access to clean and
safe water for consumption
Mercy Relief Chief Executive, Hassan
Ahmad, said, The pedal-powered filters do
not require electricity to pump, and as such
are very appropriate for use in remote
disaster-stricken areas where power supply is
affected or scarce.
The 800-litre-per-hour system was designed
by

firm
Glowtec
Environmental Corporation and each unit
costs about USD 3,000. The systems were
previously deployed successfully by Mercy
Relief in 2008 during the Cyclone Nargis in
Myanmar, the major flood in Yemen, the
victims of Typhoon Morakot in Taiwan and
Typhoon Ketsana in the Philippines and
Vietnam last year.
The system is designed around the rear
wheel of a bicycle. With the rear wheel raised
and fixed off the ground, only one person is
required to start pedaling. A series of chains
activate the rotary pump, which begins
passing water through a dual follow fibre
membrane system. This process is known as
Ultra Filtration which removes particles larger
than 0.01 microns, including most bacteria.
When the membrane is plugged up, a
pressure gauge will show high operation
pressure. The membrane can be easily
cleaned by performing backwashing. During
backwashing, clean water flows in a reverse
direction through the membrane to remove
the sediments and micro-organisms stuck on
the membrane surface. After backwashing,
the membrane will be ready to produce more
water.

Portable Membrane Filtration System
Using
membranes, this system is designed as an
effective water treatment system in rural or disaster areas
where electricity is not available. With the wheel fixed on the
ground, kinetic energy from the cyclist is converted to
mechanical energy to activate pumps. The water source is
filtered with low pressure through the membranes. This
process remove most particles more than 0.01 micron
including bacteria.
Features
Capacity Up to 900 m3/hr product water
unit can be operated manually with pedalling system or
using motor to replace manual cycling
Removes sediments, bacteria, colour, etc
International and WHO requirements
Benefit
Quick response for rural and disaster area.
Easily to operated and maintenance
Mobile unit can be quick to move to others area
Easily to use for rural and disaster area.
Application
Rural and disaster area.
Remote area where there is no power supply
Performance
Raw water source: Non-contaminated river and lake
Capacity: 400-900 liters/hour
Power: manually or mechanical
Approximate weight: 80 kg
Overall dimension: 2x0.85x1.3 m
*Excluding water source that has been contaminated by industrial discharge of waste matter.

Operation
Manually operated and electrical powered (if available)
Bicycle has dual functions of transporting equipment
and driving membrane filtration system.
UF (0.01 micron) membrane removes suspended
particulates, colloidal material and certain bacteria.
Cleaning of membranes is easily done by switching
positions of flexible tubing direction and pedaling
so that clean water flows in reverse direction, flushing
out the particulates stuck on membrane surface.
Monthly cleaning with biocide provided with packaged.
Chemicals
All chemicals required to operated the unit can be
provided by Glowtec
