Internet access. In addition we now offer
all of the latest training techniques in-
cluding functional and core training
equipment.

We are very exited about a new gen-
eration of strength equipment to be in-
stalled that will create the most
up-to-date weight room in the area. Even
our newest competition cannot claim a
more current or technologically ad-
vanced line-up. Some of the pieces have
just been introduced as recently as this
past December and no one else in the
area has t hem.

Our new equipment will be ex-
tremely user friendly and specially de-
signed to ensure ease of use and proper
body alignment.

For those in the know, the selector-
ized equipment is made by LifeFitness, a
recognized leader in the industry. Weve
chosen select pieces of equipment from
their Signature Series and their Pro 2 SE
line of strength training equipment.

While our old equipment is still
top-of-the-line for many gyms, we think
youll find the new pieces much easier to
use. It will be easier to change seat posi-
tion, resistance and increase or decrease
range of motion.

Some of the features of the Signature
Series include:
Converging and diverging axis that
correctly align with the users joint
movement to provide a natural more
comfortable feel throughout the
range of motion.
Comfortable contoured cushions
A unique incremental weight
system, which is integrated into
the stack that allows users to sim-

Our outstanding group exercise program
is an excellent example of this clubs
commitment to being the best. We have
always been, and will continue to be,
well ahead of the competition in offering
the most current, innovative, and excit-

no means immune. Consumer driven
changes are happening right now! It
seems people like their fitness quick and
convenient and t hey dont like to wait.

While I have yet to see a Drive-thru
exercise facility, we are not far from this
outcome.

First it was 30-minute workouts.
Then came the 28-minute workout. Hop-
ing to capitalize on the time-crunched
member there is now a studio offering
21-minute workouts. In this facility, after
an initial 8-week period of two workouts
per week members can reach and main-
tain lifetime fitness in one 21-minute
workout a week. This program is per-
formed in street clothes you dont even
need to change into workout clothes!

We are not too far from a program
where you wouldnt even need to come
in to the gym. Just pay your dues every
month and stay fit.

While for most consumers this facil-
itys program might be an improvement
from their alternative of no exercise, our
members here at MBS expect much more
and are willing to spend the time and effort
to achieve this. We will continue to offer
top quality programming that our members
will enjoy spending their time here.

ou would think with all the mo d-
ern conveniences and technolo-
gies that come to us on a daily
basis to cut down the time in anything
we do, that we would have so much
free time that we wouldnt know what
to do with. On the contrary, we are
squeezing more and more into our daily
life and are on a breakneck speed that
leaves us mentally and physically ex-
hausted at the end of the day.

We have turned into a nation of fast
food restaurants, cash machines and
drive-thru anythings.

Recently I heard an ad on the radio
(while I was in my car running around
trying to get things done) about a carb
fighting pill you can take that would burn
calories while you sleep and would allow
you to eat anything you wanted including
the ultimate carb---beer! I heard their
phones were ringing off the hook.

change,
while others
embrace it.
Since change
often involves risk, its no wonder that
for some of us, leaving the safe cocoon
of everyday habits can be unsettling.

But as I interviewed the MBS mem-
bers in this issue, I realized that each
and every one of them was willing to
change in order to improve their lives.

And in order to change, they had to
commit themselves to new habits and
often give up the old. For some, it meant
giving up certain foods and alcohol. For
others, it meant leaving past hurt and
pain behind and realizing that they have
hope and can live healthier, happier lives.

For one super athlete it meant chang-
ing the way he viewed his competitive
nature in order to bring balance to his
life and his adventures.

In truth, life is never static. Our cells
are always in motion. Our blood courses
through our veins. Were healthier hu-
man beings if we continue to move and
challenge our minds and bodies.

Sandra Burgess, a former profes-
sional athlete and model who is cur-
rently doing yoga therapy, told us at a
recent seminar that we should endorse
the inch worm theory.
Think of a worm as it makes its way
across the grass. Each section of its
body is undulating as it progresses. San-
dra emphasized the importance of al-
ways keeping your body in motion as
you sit at your desk, execute a yoga
pose, stand in line at the supermarket or
talk on the phone.

Taking that into a broader spectrum,
our lives would be that much richer if
we added new challenges to our daily
routine. A minor injury recently forced
me into the cardio and weight room and
out of the classes I loved.

I met new people, learned new skills,
and thanks to the patience and concern
of Michael Frank and Asti Stern, made
adjustments that will serve me well.

I also learned first hand about the
knowledge and expertise both here at
Michaels Body Scenes and their excel-
lent facility, A.P.T.A. Trust me, you
cant get better advice or care than right
in our own back yard.

While the changes we discussed are
positive, unfortunately sometimes
change can go awry. Illness, divorce and
other personal disasters can test even t he
strongest support system. MBS me m-
bers and staff are not fair weather
friends. They rally round those in need
with total dedication.

MBS is so much more than an exe r-
cise facility. Its a familya loving, car-
ing and smart familywho is there for
you when youre ready to make some
changes in your life.

the quarter for this issue, Barry
Kushner.

Barry has been with MBS for almost 6
years. Originally from Michigan, Barry
has belonged to clubs in West Bloomfield
before moving to South Florida. Here at
MBS, Barry really enjoys the association
with the members and staff and the very
warm and comfortable atmosphere. It is
his home away from home.

An accomplished athlete, Barry plays
softball in a competitive league in Po m-
pano. Fortunately for our staff during our
club softball game between the members
and the staff...which the staff won, Barry
was the umpire which kept him from
helping the members.

Barry is a regular in many of our
group exercise classes. He takes step,
high low impact, Pilates and on an occa-
sion will lift weights in the weight room.
Never intimidated or afraid to try some-
thing new, 70-year old Barry is an inspi-

can do for you. We are honored to have
members like Barry at our club!

Feingold: Miracles
Do Happen

For Iris and Norman,
joining MBS proved to be a
life-altering decision.
Norman was in so much
pain, we didnt have a life,
Iris, 55, of Boca Raton re-
veals. His back was both-
ering him and our social
life fizzled because he
couldnt even sit through a
dinner party.

At the urging of her
daughter, Allison, Iris joined
the gym and observed.

I saw that many people had personal
trainers so while I took classes and worked
out in the cardio area, I watched how dif-
ferent trainers
treated their cli-
ents. I was im-
pressed by Mi-
chael Frank so I
began working
out with him.

Norman, 56,
started to train
with Billy Carney.

Within a few
months Iris said
miracles began to
happen.

pounds and my
That was the day I decided to
change my life around, the 38-year old
investment banker says. I always loved
to cook and eat but now my metabolism
couldnt handle all that food.

I used to own a bakery and thought
nothing of eating three bowls of pasta with
a loaf of bread, the former college athlete
says. But when my size 38 jeans became
snug, I knew I had to do something.

Matthew and his wife Roberta took a
trip to Las Vegas. Their hotel had a gym
and he began getting up in the wee hours
and working out. He loved the way he
felt throughout the day and when he re-
turned home to Boca Raton, joined MBS.

Sophia showed me how to create a
circuit program, he says. I made sure I
did about 30 minutes of cardio and then
20 minutes of weight training different
parts of my body on different
days. I always fol-
lowed my workout
with a good 15 min-
ute stretch.

A simple, effective
program like Mat-
thews worked won-
ders. Within a few
months he dropped 15
pounds and easily

tremist, he says. I

formed, she says. I

I never thought I had.

Normans back pain
subsided to the extent
their social life is now
sizzling.

We both have to
much energy, its amaz-
ing, Iris says. With the
experience of our trainers
and their expertise, we
have changed our lives.

Not only did the
Feingolds weight and
pain level take a nosedive, so did their
cholesterol levels. Normans dropped a
full 60 points and Iris also plummeted.

We also changed
our diets, cutting back
on sugar and alcohol,
says Iris. In the 39

Beep, beep, beepwake up! Its
time to start a new day.

As you begin your daily morning
routine getting lunches packed, kids
ready for school
and yourself out
the door the
American Dietetic
Association re-
minds you to be
sure breakfast is
one of your fa m-
ilys top priorities
each morning.

Breakfast is important to everyones
overall health and performance. It is an
early-morning refueling stop for your
body. After eight to 12 hours without a
meal or a snack, your body needs to re-
plenish its glucose, also called blood
sugar, the main energy source for the
brain.

Studies show breakfast eaters tend to
have more strength and endurance, and
better concentration and problem-
solving abilities. On the flip side, those
who skip breakfast often feel tired, irri-
table or restless in the morning.

Breakfast is essential to childrens
health and nutrition and gives them a
jump-start on their days daily require-
ments for vitamins, minerals and other
nutrients. Research shows kids who
regularly eat a morning meal tend to
perform better in school, often scoring
higher on tests. Kids who skip breakfast
tend to be tardy or absent from school
more often. Breakfast eaters often be-
have better in school, too.

Dont forget who else should eat
breakfast: You!
Kids who see their
parents eat break-
fast are more
likely to eat break-
fast, too. If time is
a concern for you
in the mornings,
start the day with
quick breakfast
options, like:
Whole-grain cereal with fruit
and milk
Whole-grain cereal with a cup
of yogurt
Toasted waffles topped with
peanut butter
Instant oatmeal with milk and
dried fruit
A whole-wheat pita stuffed
with sliced hard-cooked eggs.

If your taste buds just dont crave
breakfast foods, enjoy a sandwich or
leftovers like pizza, pasta or rice in the
morning. Just make sure to start your
day the healthy way with breakfast!

BREAKFAST: THE RIGHT START EVERY DAY
By The American Dietetic Association
s people age, some foods dont
go down as easily as they used to.
Avoiding these foods
might solve some problems.
What do you do when they con-
tain important nutrients your
body needs like calcium?

Some older adults have
trouble digesting milk, even
though they had no problem in
younger years. The reason?
With age, the small intestine
may not produce as much lac-
tase. Lactase is the enzyme that digests
the natural sugar, called lactose, in milk.
Without adequate lactase, consumption
of milk can lead to gas, bloating and
diarrhea. The good news is you dont
have to skip milk and the cal-
cium it provides, just make a
few alterations in your eating
habits.

First, drink milk in small
amounts; usually the body can
release enough lactase to digest
a smaller amount of milk. Drink
milk with other foods. This
helps slow down digestion mak-
ing absorption of lactose easier.
Try other dairy foods that are lower in
lactose such as yogurt, cheese, butter-
milk or special lactose-free milks.

do whats best for it. I also changed my
eating patterns. I still eat pasta, but as a
side dish to a nice lean piece of chicken,
meat or fish.

Matthew says his philosophy drew
him to MBS.

I like a nice friendly gym, he says.
I dont put pressure on myself and no-
body pressures me at the gym. Everyone
was extremely helpful and you can tell all
the employees are motivated in their job.

Carlos I s Cruzing Along
Carlos Cruz, 34, was at the end of a
dark tunnel when he joined MBS. He
weighed over 400 pounds and the doctors
predicted a very grim future if he did not
lose weight.

I knew things were not getting better
and they could certainly get a lot worse,
he says. So I joined the gym because it
looked much less intimidating than the
other facilities.

Fred Applebaum promptly took Carlos
under his wing and began a gentle program
of appropriate cardiovascular activity.

I lost 93 pounds in less than a year, "
Carlos says proudly. Andrea Contant
was also very helpful in helping me de-
velop core training. Allison Raines, the
nutritionist at MBS, encouraged me to
eat healthier foods.

This team approach carried Carlos
through the difficult times.

I was afraid people would judge me
because of my weight, he admits. But I
never felt out of place at MBS. The group
effort and support was unbelievable.

Dr. Stuart Zoll, a local acupuncturist
and doctor of Oriental medicine heard of
Carols plight and volunteered his services.

I was able to control my diabetes and
got completely off my antidepressant and
anxiety medications, Carlos says. It was
unbelievable. I saw improvement within
two weeks.

Carlos also credits MBS trainer Lisa
Thibodeau for helping him in her group
classes.

I thank God for all these people who

TREATING CHILDREN
WITH NATURAL
MEDICINE
ome of the most important deci-
sions we have to make in caring
for our children concern health
care. Yet often we are not aware of
the full range of choices available to us.
Children become ill easily, and their ill-
nesses quickly become serious. The rate
at which an illness progress can be alarm-
ing, temperatures can quickly shoot up:
chest complaints can rapidly develop into
pneumonia and threaten life: diarrhea can
swiftly become severe and endanger life.
Even when a disease appears hopeless,
children can easily and rapidly recover.

"The safest and most effective ap-
proach in caring for our children is to in-
tegrate conventional pediatric technology
with natural medicine, to lead the way to
raising healthier and happier children,"
says, Stuart Zoll, DOM, the director of
The Center For Preventive Medicine.
"likes cure likes". Perhaps more than anything
else, what distinguishes the practice of home-
opathy from other approaches in medicine is
that instead of focusing on the specific causes
of disease (such as viruses and bacteria) it fo-
cuses on the specifics of the symptoms of the
disease, as the individual patient experiences
them. The homeopathic remedy Nux Vomica
is very effective for treating children with up-
set stomach, and nauseas and is available in
most health food stores.

Chinese herbs: Many of the herbs boost
your child's immune function and prevent
recurrent infections. A child with a serious
illness may need an integrative approach,
which may include acupuncture, herbs, and
antibiotics. The herbs and acupuncture im-
prove the body's immune function and dra-
matically reduce the time it would take to re-
cover from the illness. After the child recovers
Chinese medicine would be best used to restore
vitality and balance any side effects induced by
Western treatments, such as lingering patho-
genic effects from dead bacteria or yeast infec-
tions. At present time not many acupuncturist
treat children less than seven years of age. This
is a great waste of resources, s ince acupuncture

Why does my child get sick so often?
She seems to miss school a lot because of
frequent infections. She is always con-
gested. He has a cough that won't go
away. He needs to be on antibiotics every
time he gets sick. Sound familiar?

Diet is important to all children healthy
or sick, but especially when a child is ill.
Foods can cause a child to become ill, even if
they are reasonably healthy to start with, or it
can exacerbate an already existing illness.
Children easily develop congestion, a runny
nose and a cough. A child's diet is often high
in phlegm producing foods: cow's milk,
cheese, yogurt, peanut butter and to much fruit
juice. I recommend eliminating the dairy
products and changing over to soy or rice
milk. Limit the amount of fruit juices and get
them to drink more water.

Homeopathy is a system of treatment that
uses minute amounts of plants, minerals, and
animal substances to stimulate the defensive
system of the body in a very subtle way. It is
widely used in Europe but not as well known
in the United States. The theoretical and em-
pirical basis of homeopathy is a concept called
the Law of Similars, often summarized as

is a safe and effective mode of treatment for
many childhood diseases. Children are not
small adults, they need to be treated by an
acupuncturist that has specialized training in
treating childhood illnesses. Acupuncture has
many uses in children with both acute and
chronic conditions; respiratory diseases, diges-
tive diseases, ear infections, allergies, frequent
colds, skin problems, teething, behavioral
problems, and asthma. Perhaps the most dra-
matic success is seen in the treatment of
asthma. Acupuncture can relieve acute symp-
toms during an asthma attack and can be used
to strengthen the child's lungs so that they are
not prone to having asthma. Acupuncture can
be integrated with conventional drug therapy
until your pediatrician gradually reduces the
medications. Parents want to know if it is go-
ing to hurt. For most children the treatment is
painless, if the acupuncturist is trained in treat-
ing young children. Needles used for children
are very fine. The treatment usually takes less
than a few minutes.

my cardio. I also like the way the gym is
so user-friendly. All the equipment you
need is right there at your fingertips. You
want to work abstheres an area for
that, too. Very few gyms that I visited
were so organized.

Richard Mularski: Athlete Extraordi-
naire.

You cant help liking this affable ath-
lete. Richard Mularski, 33, known in the
sports world as one of the most dominant
solo racers in Florida, is so self-effacing
he credits others for his spectacular suc-
cess.

Im what you call an adventure
racer, the Bell South employee explains.
I like races that can combine kayaking,
biking, running or any other sport.
Mularski is in excellent shape but
says that the staff at MBS helped him
train for specific sports.

For example, Andrea Contant gave
me creative ways to strengthen my core
so that when Im kayaking, I have more
stability, he says.

He goes to the gym every day.

For me its
like brushing
teeth, he laughs.
Thats my lunch
hour. I come to the
gym and do what
my body needs to
train.

Oddly enough,
Mularksi says that
yoga has given him
extraordinary in-
sight into his ex-
treme athleticism.

I take Leslies
class and have
learned to enjoy the
journey rather than the
destination, he says, quoting the oft -
used yoga phrase that means we should
enjoy the process or achieving our goals
and not focus only on the end result.

So now if I have a bad race, I shrug
and say, Ive had a bad race. Mularski
says. On the other hand, yoga has also
taught me to focus in the moment. Im
able to psyche myself up during a race
and forge ahead, concentrating on whats
happening right now and not what hap-
pened a while ago.

And just when you
thought this macho male
earned kudos for trying
yoga, he adds a kicker.

I love taking some
of the choreographed
classes like Annas or
Andreas because the
moves challenge my
feminine side. I learn
fluidity and flexibility.

Most of all I love
the way the club func-
tions like a family. I can
be on the treadmill next
to a person who has
joined the gym for the
first time and we strike
up a convers ation. Everyones open and
friendly.

olf is a fair weather sport. Most of
the time the sun is out and you
stroll or ride from hole to hole.
The only highest point of physical exer-
tion occurs during the drive. There isnt
much to it, right?

Contrary to popular belief, the physi-
cal body undergoes repetitive stress that
can turn any sunny day of golf into a
gloomy day of aches and pain. Repetitive
stress may affect any joint from the wrists
up to the shoulders. It can then travel
from to the spine to the pelvis and down
through the knees and ankles. Eventu-
ally, the body takes on a strength imbal-
ance. When the strength imbalance oc-
curs injuries arise. Since the body is a
kinetic chain one poor biomechanical
movement pattern offsets another and
another, like dominos. It is necessary to
establish integrity, stabilization, and en-
sure the prevention of injuries. For exa m-
ple, core strength is essential to gain
power for any sport, especially golf. Ex-
tremities depend on the core for its
strength. Without core strength the body
relies on sheer joint pressure and stress.
Unfortunately, repetitive stress has a way
of putting a damper on the sunny day at
the golf course. Re-
member that all it takes
is one nasty fat shot to
jar your spine.

A common mistake
most people do is play-
ing their sport to get
into shape; they dont
get into shape to play
their sport. We now
offer a specifically de-
signed workshop that
encompasses all the
critical areas of condi-
tioning for golfers. In
addition to core
strength/power, other areas of training
will be addressed, such as, endurance re-
sistance training, balance, stability, func-
tional movement skills, and flexibility.
This conditioning workshop will
physically challenge, educate, and en-
hance the performance of all levels of
golfers. The knowledge and conditioning
skills obtained will be invaluable and
necessary. Renee Sanok is a certified
strength and conditioning specialist who
concentrates on educat-
ing, inspiring, and train-
ing all athletic profiles,
especially golfers and
racquet players. This is
a service offer you

to make others green
with envy. Please regis-
ter at the front desk
(561) 750-7945 or call
Renee Sanok at (561)

tion. The workshop will
be held every Saturday
in March from 1:00-2:00
p.m. for both members
and non-members. The maximum num-
ber of attendees will be 20. The cost is
$180.00 for four weeks. Please pay
and register at the front desk.

QUESTIONS CORNER
I s it necessary to have the bar
touch your chest when doing the
bench press?

A. According to our fitness director, Chuck
Wong Chong, traditional technique dictate
that the bar be lowered until it touches the
chest. The bench press was never intended
to be used as a benchmark for strength but
an exercise to develop the muscles of the
chest, shoulders and triceps.

Overemphasis on this exercise cou-
pled with inappropriate tech-
nique can lead to shoulder
problems in both athletes and
non-athletes. Additionally
some individuals are not ana-
tomically designed to perform
this exe rcise as it is generally
taught in strength training
manuals.

The movement restricting factor during
the bench press is not the muscles of the
shoulder, but the special connective tissue
around the shoulder joint called the "joint
capsule". This structure allows just the right
amount of motion to prevent joint damage.

Additionally this exercise is done on
a flat firm bench which disrupts the nor-
mal movement of the shoulder blades
and in turn puts more demand on the
shoulder joint. As you load the bar with
heavier and heavier weights the shoulder
blades are pressed harder and harder into
the bench, further disrupting the normal
mechanics of the shoulder girdle and
overloading the shoulder joint.

To determine your individual range of
motion for the bench press, place your arms
in the bench press position and allow your
arm to lower to its passive end range of mo-
tion (this is where the arm naturally stops
without being forced). Once you have de-
termined this end position, reposition the
arm about 1 inch above the furthest point to
find your optimal bottom position.

For Success"

Q: What exercises best hit the upper or
lower rectus abdominis?

A study was recently done on six
popular abdominal exercises with electro-
myography (EMG) at the upper and
lower ends of the rectus abdominus and
compared electrical activity of each
against a maximal isometric abdominal
curl. The exercises included the: curl up,
Swiss ball curl up, Ab Trainer curl up,
supine single-leg lowering, stability ball
roll-out, and reverse curl.

The results demonstrated
no significant differences in
activity of the upper and
lower rectus abdominus in
any of the individual exer-
cises. The ball curl up and
the Ab Trainer curl up pro-
duced the strongest EMG
responses; the regular curl up
was ranked third. As expected, the leg low-
ering exercise used the abdominus mainly
in the roll of a stabilizer of the spine. The
reverse curl-up showed more intensity to
the lower rectus abdominus than the upper,
although, the Swiss Ball curl up showed
more intensity for the lower rectus ab-
dominus than even the reverse curl.
CHUCKS EXERCISE
CORNER
Stability Ball Supine Twists
tart by laying in a supine position
on a stability ball and rolling out
until your upper back and head is
supported by the ball. Next con-
tract your gluteus (butt) muscles and pull
your body up into a bridge position. Take
both arms and lock them together fully
stretched perpendicular to your body.

While isometrically contracting at
your gluteus rotate your arms fully ex-
tended over to the left side while lifting
your head off the ball, hold for a split
second then roll over to the right side. It
would be helpful if you roll onto your
shoulder as you turn in each direction.

This is a great core developer with em-
phasis on the oblique muscles with some low
back, gluteus and hamstring involvement.

This exercise is great for the golf en-
thusiasts.

verance and teamwork. The MBS girls
beat overwhelming odds after a string of
5 heartbreaking loses left them needing
to win their last game just to make the
playoffs. The girls got angry then got

later theyre the champs. Way to go

Did you know that we have an interna-
tionally known author and national tabloid
reporter who is a member of Michaels
Body Scenes? This personality happens to
be Lynn Allisona familiar name on the
pages of the Gazette and one who is gra-
cious enough to write some of the excep-
tional articles you read every issue.
Lynn turned to exercise and MBS
when the stress of her job was ruining her
immune system? The symptoms of fatigue,
chronic illness and hormonal highs and
lows were making life miserable. Aside
from the occasional cold (and bout with
sciatica!!) she's feeling better than ever at
56. Plus, she sailed through menopause
without the use of hormones or other medi-
cations--thanks to yoga and exercise.

Furthermore, during the horrible and
tragic months her husband suffered with
brain cancer, her weekly yoga sessions
were a mandatory ritual that saved
her sanity.
olli-Rose Glickman daughter of
MBS owners Leslie and Andy,
along with a feisty group of 9
year girls won the Soccer Association of
Boca Raton league championship. This
years Cherubin Cup was awarded to the
MBS sponsored team on Saturday Feb
21 after a hard fought 1-0 victory.
The level of competition among
these kids progressed throughout the sea-
son and the quality of play improved to
culminate in a fantastic hard fought
game that made everyone proud,--
parents, players and coaches.

The first half was a defensive strug-
gle as the real strength of the MBS team
came out. The girls refused to allow their
opponents to get anywhere near the goal.
However the other team was just as
stingy blocking several shots on goal and
keeping the first half scoreless.

Early in the second half the superior
speed of the MBS offense came into
play. After taking a breakaway shot on
goal and a fantastic save, the alert play-
ers stayed in the play and scored on the
follow up. This would be the deciding
goal as the defense rose to the challenge
and smothered the other team for the bal-
ance of the second half.

The most impressive part of this vic-
tory is the path the team took to get to
the championship game in the first place.
It is a real lesson in determination, perse-
