Voter ID law on again, off again
Heres what you should know before voting
As of this printing, the Supreme
Court blocked Wisconsin from im-
plementing its new voter ID law,
which would have required voters
to present a photo ID when voting.
As of October 9, voters are not re-
quired to show a photo IDto vote.
A representative from the Gov-
ernment Accountability Board said
the Voter ID law would not be re-
instated before the November 4
election, however, when he was
pressed further, he said he is not an
attorney and cannot absolutely
guarantee anything.
With the elections just weeks
away, voters should still be aware
of whats required to obtain a
photo ID in the unlikely event that
the law is reinstated.
Most voters already have one of
the acceptable types of photo ID
required to vote, and dont need to
worry about whether the law is re-
instated or not. Should the voter ID
law be reinstated, voters must pro-
vide one of the following photo
IDs before they can cast a ballot:
-Wisconsin drivers license
-Wisconsin state ID card
-Military ID card
-U.S. passport
* The above IDs are still valid if
expired after the date of the most
recent general election which was
November 6, 2012.
The following forms of photo ID
would also be acceptable, but must
be unexpired:
- A Certificate of Naturalization
- Drivers license receipt issued by
the WI DOT
- ID issued by a federally recog-
nized Wisconsin Indian Tribe
- A photo ID issued by a Wisconsin
accredited university or college
(please contact your local clerk,
the Wisconsin Government Ac-
countability Board, or your college
or university for specifications).
* An acceptable photo ID is not re-
quired to include a current address.
Anyone who does not have a
valid WI drivers license or WI
state ID may apply for a free WI
state ID from their local DMV if
they specifically request a free ID
for voting purposes. Be prepared to
have a certified copy of your birth
certificate (not the birth certificate
issued by the hospital). If your
name changed because of mar-
riage, etc., you will also be re-
quired to provide a certified
document showing proof of name
change (i.e. marriage license is-
sued by the county you resided in
when married). Contact your local
DMV or your local clerk for more
information.
Absentee Voting
Iif the voter ID law were to be
reinstated, in-person absentee vot-
ing would also require a photo ID
just like on election Day, .
In-person absentee voting can
begin the third Monday before the
election, and must end at 5:00 p.m.
or the close of business, whichever
is later, the Friday before the elec-
tion. In-person absentee voting
hours in the Village of Kohler are
8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
If the voter ID law is reinstated,
voters who request an absentee
ballot by mail will also have to in-
clude a photocopy of their photo
ID with the request. Voters who are
indefinitely confined because of
age, illness, infirmity or disability
and voters in care facilities would
be allowed to have their absentee
witness verify their identity instead
of providing a copy of their photo
ID. Active members of the U.S.
Armed Services who are away
from home would be exempt from
the photo ID requirement.
Voters are encouraged to visit
the Wisconsin Government Ac-
countabilitys Voter ID website
www.bringit.wisconsin.gov for the
latest information.
Specific questions may be di-
rected to the Village Clerks Office
at the Village Hall, 319 Highland
Drive, Kohler. Phone: 920-459-
3873. Email: LLindow@kohlervil-
lage.org
Are you registered to vote?
Regardless of voter ID laws, every voter must still be
properly registered to vote
With the election just a few
weeks away, local voters are urged
to make sure they are properly reg-
istered for the November 4 general
election. Voter registration is sep-
arate from the voter IDlaw, and is
required of all voters.
In less than two minutes, voters
can visit MyVote.WI.gov to find
out whether they are registered to
vote, find their polling place loca-
tion, and view a sample ballot.
Anyone not registered or needing
to update name or address can start
the process online.
Voters who dont have Internet
access may call the Village Clerks
Office at 920-459-3873 or stop by
the office at 319 Highland Drive,
Kohler and the staff will be happy
to help you.
Wednesday, October 15 is the
deadline to register to vote by mail,
(this includes the voter registration
form that can be downloaded from
MyVote.WI.gov). All mail-in voter
registration applications must be
postmarked by October 15. Start-
ing on October 16, all voter regis-
trations must be in the clerks
office or at the polling place on
Election Day.

Matt Zavada, coach of the
Kohler/Sheboygan Lutheran/She-
boygan Christian (KLC) Coopera-
tive High School football program,
was named Coach of the Week by
the Green Bay Packers.
Zavada, in his seventh year as
the head coach of the KLC football
program, led his team to a 49-28
victory over Random Lake High
School giving KLC their first con-
ference win and best start since
2010.
Its been a really good year for
our young team, said Zavada.
They continue to work hard every
day and improve each week. Im
proud of our kids, coaches and the
support we receive from the com-
munity.
A Flint, Mich. native, Zavada is
a 1997 graduate of Holly High
School (Mich.), where he played
on the offensive line. After high
school, he attended Concordia
University-Wisconsin where he
played on the offensive line under
coach Jeff Grabrielson. Zavada
began his coaching career as an as-
sistant offensive line coach for
Concordia in 2001. In 2002, he ac-
cepted his first high school assis-
tant coaching position at
Arrowhead before landing in
Kohler in 2003. When Kohler
dropped their football program in
2005, Zavada moved to Ozaukee
high school, where he spent three
seasons before being offered his
current position as the head coach
for the KLC Co-op football pro-
gram. He is also the physical edu-
cation teacher for the Kohler
School District.
Zavada and his staff oversee a
program of 47 players, including a
varsity roster of 32. His assistant
coaching staff includes Frantz
Feliz, Al Holzheimer, Chris Jaskul-
ski, Mike Nikson and Scott Sil-
vestri.
Zavada and his wife, Kelly, have
twin boys, Parker and Quinn.

Each year the Wisconsin Depart-
ment of Instruction provides public
performance reports for all public
schools and districts in Wisconsin
as part of the state accountability
system. These Report Cards pro-
vide data on multiple indicators for
four priority areas including stu-
dent achievement, student growth,
closing gaps (in reading and math-
ematics performance and/or grad-
uation rates), and post-secondary
readiness.
Performance on three student
engagement indicators, which af-
fect student success and school ef-
fectiveness, is also reported
including test participation rate,
absenteeism rate, and dropout rate.
A districts overall accountabil-
ity score places the district and
school into one of five ratings: Sig-
nificantly Exceeds Expectations,
Exceeds Expectations, Meets Ex-
pectations, Meets Few Expecta-
tions, Fails to Meet Expectations.
Kohler High School received the
highest report card score among
public high schools in the state for
2013-2014 with an overall ac-
countability score of 91.3. (Home-
stead High School in Mequon-
Thiensville and Pewaukee high
school tied for second, with a score
of 88.1). Factoring in exclusive
private and charter schools, KHS
came in ninth out of a total of
2,114 schools.
We are so proud of the hard
work of our students, faculty and
staff. This achievement reflects the
remarkable families and commu-
nity support, said Kohler Super-
intendent and High School
Principal Quynh Trueblood.

Kohler Veterans
Memorial update
The flag pole is in, the paving
stones set, the frame for the granite
stands is up, and electricity is run to
the light. The only items needing in-
stallation before the dedication of
the new Kohler Veterans Memorial
are the granite stands, the plaques,
and the flag.
On one of the granite stands will
be the symbol of the United States
Coast Guard and a plaque represent-
ing the service. The plaque will in-
clude an insignia for the USCG
Sector Lake Michigan and a nautical
chart of Sheboygan harbor. The
foreground will show the old She-
boygan Life Saving Station that was
located near the present Sheboygan
Coast guard Station overlooking the
Sheboygan Harbor.
A dedication for the memorial
and the flag raising ceremony are
planned for Tuesday, November 11
at 11:00 a.m. with Col. Robert C.
Horneck giving the dedication ad-
dress. Plans are in the works to in-
vite the public to this event.

Fondest memories growing up
in Kohler
The first thing that comes to
mind is the fun summer nights as
child. Staying out playing until "the
street lights come on" and then
heading in for dinner. Then it was
back outside for night games like
Ghost in the Graveyard. The sec-
ond memory that comes to mind is
the coming of age (age 9) and gain-
ing independent access to the
Kohler pool (and spending 5 after-
noons a week there).
What was most memorable
about attending Kohler Schools,
and how did the education at
KHS help this grad attain their
goals?
What I value most out of my ed-
ucation is the small class sizes and
the attention that was able to be
paid to each child due to the small
class size. In addition, being so
small allowed for everyone to par-
take in EVERYTHING - sports,
student council, forensics, band,
choir, musicals, plays. Most
schools have to exclude (through
try outs or auditions) due to student
population. At Kohler, you did not
get cut - you may not be the star -
but you could participate. This pro-
duces well rounded graduates who
enter college with varied interests
to explore further.
Tell us more about career, fam-
ily, hobbies . . .
Upon graduating I went to Saint
Mary's College in Notre Dame, IN.
I graduated in 2001 with a degree
in Education. I moved to Milwau-
kee after graduation and taught 1st
grade at 95th Street School in Mil-
waukee Public Schools. After one
year of teaching, I entered grad
school at Cardinal Stritch Univer-
sity. Since it was an accelerated
program, I graduated in 20 months
(2004) with my MS in Ed Leader-
ship.
I also met my husband, Rob,
while living in, teaching in, and
going to school in Milwaukee. In
2005 our first daughter, McKenna
was born and we purchased our
first home in Kohler, where I
worked part time at Kohler School
to stay home with McKenna for
most of the day.
After one year at Kohler School,
I took a position at Kohler Com-
pany in HR. I started as an HR As-
sistant, went into a Generalist role,
and finished as Training Specialist.
While working at Kohler my
second daughter, Riley, was born
and we purchased our second home
in Ko hler.
After 5 years at Kohler, I was of-
fered a Training Manager position
at Sargento. Two years in to that
amazing position, I was offered an
opportunity to lead the Talent De-
velopment department for the
Americas for Brady Corporation. I
have been with Brady since De-
cember of 2013.
My husband, McKenna (age 9),
Riley (age 6) and I now live on
School Street. My children are in
1st and 4th grade at Kohler School
- a bit surreal. I was the girl who
couldn't wait to get out of the small
town, and as soon as I had children,
couldn't wait to come back. Rob
and I feel very blessed to raise our
children in this community.

The celebrated line of jewel-like
Rare Facet handmade chocolates
has expanded with a seasonal of-
fering in support of Breast Cancer
Awareness Month. The new Straw-
berry Balsamic Rare Facet is an
exquisite dark chocolate shell
filled with a dark chocolate
ganache of strawberry puree and
aged balsamic vinegar. These gems
are individually airbrushed with a
soft shade of pink in support of
The American Cancer Society.
The collection of Rare Facets
are designed to offer a dramatic
chocolate experience with the col-
orings noting the robust flavor
within the hard chocolate shell,
said Kohler Original Recipe
Chocolates Head Chocolatier
Anette Righi DeFendi. The
Strawberry Balsamic Rare Facet
does just that with its smooth
sweeter notes of strawberry ac-
companied by the rich flavor of a
carefully selected high-quality bal-
samic vinegar.
The Strawberry Balsamic Rare
Facet pairs perfectly with a Cham-
pagne or a Sparkling White Wine.
I have always preferred a bev-
erage pairing with a bit of bubble
for most of the sweeter chocolates
designed by Kohler Original
Recipe Chocolates and the Straw-
berry Balsamic Rare Facet fits this
pairing perfectly, said Righi De-
Fendi. I prefer Tattinger Cham-
pagne and Schramsberg Blanc de
Blancs to help celebrate the com-
plex flavors and tastes of this new
chocolate.
