Functions of the Kidneys

The Kidney has 5 main functions:

Storing Jing and dominating reproduction, growth and development
Producing marrow, filling up the brain, dominating bones and assisting in blood production
Dominating water
Controlling the reception of qi
Opening into the ears and dominating the two lower yin (the anus and urethra)

In addition, the Kidneys:

Are the lowest zang
Are the root of the original yin and yang of the body
Conserve and control the ming men fire
House the will
Are the foundation of the Conception and Penetrating vessels which originate in the uterus,
whilst according to the Essential Questions the vessel of the uterus connects with the
kidneys.

Point actions and indications:
Rooting pathologically ascending heat, qi, yang and wind. The kidneys are the bottom-most
zang and the root of yin. When yin is deficient, deficiency heat, or uprising yang, or interior
wind may ascend to the throat, ears, eyes and head. Points of the Ki channel are frequently
used to nourish yin and to strongly descend pathogens from the head.
Nourishing yin and clearing deficiency heat in the treatment of night sweats, wasting and
thirsting disorder, etc.
Nourishing Liver yin to counteract uprising of Liver yang in the treatment of headache,
dizziness, etc.
Rooting the qi and harmonizing the relationship between the Kidneys and Lung in the treatment
of cough, coughing of blood, dyspnea, asthma, wheezing, etc.
Tonifying Kidney yang to strengthen the Kidney function of dominating water in the treatment
of edema and deficiency type urinary disorders.
Tonifying kidney yang to strengthen the libido in the tx of impotence, seminal emission, etc.
Tonifying Kidney yang to warm the lower body, legs and feet
Benefiting the throat, especially in the treatment of sore and dry throat or loss of voice due to
yin deficiency
Strengthening the lumbar spine and benefiting the teeth.
Benefiting the ears in the treatment of tinnitus and deafness
Regulating the CV and Chong Mo and treating diseases of the uterus such as infertility,
disordered menstruation, uterine prolapse, postpartum disorders, etc.
Draining damp-heat from the lower jiao and regulating the function of the Bladder and
intestines in the treatment of difficult urination, retention of urine, painful urinary dysfunction,
dark urine, diarrhea, dysenteric disorder, swelling, itching and pain of the genitals, shan
disorder, hypogastric pain, etc.
Nourishing Ki yin in the treatment of constipation due to dryness.

The Kidney Channel

The Main Pathway

1. The channel begins beneath the
little toe, goes towards the sole
and emerges at KI

2. It travels along the medial
aspect of the foot form the
inferior border of the navicular
bone, goes to the medial
malleolus, and then travels
upwards to the medial aspect
of the knee, linking with SP 6
between KI 8 and 9.

3. The meridian continues up the
leg to the medial side of the
popliteal fossa at KI 10 and
along the postero-medial
aspect of the thigh,to the tip of
the coccyx where it intersects
with GV 1.

4. It then travels up the spine to
GV 4 and passes forward to
CV 4, down to CV 3 and
emerges again at KI 11. (acc.
to D: the path intersects with
CV 3, CV 4 and CV 7, not
GV 4).

5. The meridian travels through
the lower jiao (from KI 16
entering the KI and connecting
with the BL), and middle and
upper jiao to end at KI 27.
(Some texts say there is a link
with the KI and BL directly
from GV 1).

6. A deep path from the KI rises
up through the abdomen,
passing through the liver,
diaphragm and lungs and up through the trachea and larynx to finish at the root of the tongue.

7. Another short branch travels from KI 25 to the lungs and the heart and on to CV 17 where it joins the PC
meridian and disperses in the chest.

The Kidney Channel

Divergent Channel

After separating from the primary meridian in the popliteal fossa, the divergent channel
intersects the divergent channel of the Bladder on the thigh.
It then proceeds upwards and connects with the Kidney before crossing the Dai Mai at
about the level of the 7
th
thoracic vertebra (acc. to D, they intersect at the 2
nd
lumbar
vertebra).
From here it ascends to the base of the tongue and continues up to emerge at the nape of
the neck, joining the Bladder primary meridian.

Connecting Channel

After leaving the primary meridian at KI 4, it crosses the heel and connects with the
Bladder meridian.
A branch follows the KI meridian upwards to a point inferior to the Pericardium, then
passes into the lumbar vertebra.

Muscle Channel

This originates beneath the 5
th
toe and together with the Spleen muscle channel, crosses
inferior to the medial malleolus and binds at the heel where it joins the Bladder muscle
channel.
It then passes up the leg, binding at the inferomedial aspect of the knee, joining with the
Spleen muscle channel, and travels up the medial aspect of the thigh to bind at the genital
region.
A branch ascends the side of the spine to the nape of the neck, binding with the occiput
and linking up with the Bladder muscle channel.

Name/ER Gushing Spring
Yong: to gush, well up, surge
Quan: a spring; ancient term for coin
Alternate Names:Earth Surge, Yin Valley,
Stumbling Heart, Foot SY Union
The idea of both characters together is a bubbling spring, water rising from a fountain. This is
the root of the KI meridian, which has the ability to rise up and sustain the movement of the
water up to the top of the body. This is the only point in complete, direct contact with the
ground. What is able to be at the bottom can rule the gathering of all types of life. This point
helps a person make contact with the Earth, find the Earth inside him/her, and serves as a basis
for this rising of qi.

This point represents the wood element on the KI meridian. It reflects this ability of the
Wood to spring and spread out and rise. It also expresses the idea of vigor and bravery.
The virtue of Wood is the virtue of the first appearance of something. The Water is first
perceptible at this point and this reflects its Wood quality.

The last point of the BL meridian is Extremity of Yin. Its from this extreme of yin under the
foot that we have this bubbling up of the KI meridian.

Other
This point relates to the purest, clearest, health giving fluid. This fluid is not only good
for drinking, it refreshes the mind and spirit. Sometimes we need to tap into this spring
to flush out some of the stagnant fluid. Consider for painful loins & water retention.
Be careful--spring water is frozen cold. If you dont want ice cold water running through
the body, follow this point with Kidney 2.
A great winter pointit cleanses, revitalizes, brings youthfulness and effervescence.
This point cleanses the physical body, providing a rejuvenating bath. Its good for people
who have boils, edema, sores, etc. Consider if someone is very red-faced.

Name/ER Blazing Valley
Ran: so, however; suddenly, burn
Gu: valley
Alternate Names: Blazing Bone,
Dragon in the Abyss, Dragon in the Spring,
Grain Connection
This is the Fire point and the name is the representation of Fire, deep in a valley. In
this valley receptacle life shows up blazing, but also reflects nature as it is. This is the
only point that contains the character Ran. At the level of the first two points we
have Water and Fire. The Fire allows things to express what they really are. The
Water is a bubbling, while the Fire is a sort of blazing ignition of life. Because it is in
the valley it is a xi cleft point for the SP meridian. This is the abyss from where the
dragon may surge; the dragon is the Fire of Ming Men in the classics.

Gu also means bone and the pronunciation is nearly the same. The valley in the
body is the bone supporting the flesh, just as the mountain forms the valley.

Other
This point is great for warming frozen Water. Take care not to overheat. Use it
for Coldness with III 60. If the body is hot and feverish, then sedate this point.
Its a first aid point for pain in the testicles-shove your thumb into the point very

Its good for BP in pregnancy.
JG: Use this point for excess water, when things are a bit frozen (cold inside)
and unable to move or take a step. Warmth supports and sustains that
movement. This point provides sustenance and is good for lack of movement in
the spine.

Name/ER Great Ravine
Tai: Great, big, the most
Xi: A mountain stream, ravine
Alternate Names: Small Lu, Lu Palace

This represents the Earth element. It expresses the willpower of the KI and the
relationship with the Earth. The point expresses the foundation of the KI. This is a
very good point for the regulation of yin and of liquids. The KI, SP & LU are three
great zang for the control of the metabolism of liquids. Use this point to expel super-
abundant water, but tonify or use moxa to stimulate the yang of KI, to re-establish
the good work of qi on the liquids. By using this point to influence Water & Earth
you stimulate the good flow of Metal as well and affect these three most important
zang in influencing the fluids.

Other
This point allows a greater volume of water to flow through the meridianit is
clean, clear and rich in trace elements.
This point draws upon reserves of fluid and enriches the quality of water.
Its a source of nourishment, great power. It reassures, holds, fills, provides the
holding needed to have the courage to step into the mystery of life.
JG: This water is clean, clear, rich in trace elements. Its a smooth flowing

Name/ER Large Goblet
Da: Large, great
Zhong: a handle less cup; a bell; to gather
Alternate Names: Great Goblet

KI 1 is on the bottom of the body and provides a powerful bubbling up. At KI 2 there is a
continuation of this bubbling. At KI 3 you go down deeply, so deep it is almost
imperceptible, and at KI 4 you go even deeper. Then at KI 5 there is the surging movement
again and KI 6 continues this movement. KI 4 is a Luo point. It connects to the BL, which
is the receptacle for liquids in the body. The BL helps the KI distribute liquids and Yuan Qi,
etc. All the collecting of the liquids are shared between the KI and the BL, so this function is
expressed at this Junction point.

If you use this character meaning piling up with the character for foot, it means heel. Through
the form of the heel the human body is able to gain enough power to sustain the rising and
circulation of qi and liquids from the bottom of the foot. Through the heel the relationship
with the Earth is sustained and allows the basis for this rising energy.

Other
Like an alarm point, the Great Bell is rung, i.e. becomes tender when all is not well.
Acknowledge the patients distress call with this point.
This point helps to remove psychological blockage for someone who does not want to
see.
JG: This point is a sledgehammer that knocks down a persons walls that they have
created. Its good for a fear of being observed. It has the ability to have a Water CF
who doesnt want to see, to see. Its good for lack of physical and mental stabilityi.e.
choppy waters. Its a wake up call for unity, it provides clarity.

Name Shining Sea
Zhao: To shine, to reflect
Hai: Sea
Alternate Names: Leaky Yin, Yin motility
KI 6 is located next to Blazing Valley, the fire point of the KI channel. The brightness
of fire shining on water gives KI 6 its name. The character, hai, sea, may be a
reference to the points location at the beginning of the yin qiao mo and recognition
of the fact that kidney qi serves as the source (i.e. the sea) of that vessel. For this
reason, KI 6 is also known by the alternate name of yin qiao, yin motility.

Other
This point contains vast volumes of fluid and energy. Its a light, bright, clear sea,
full of clarity and illuminating.
The sea should be tranquil/controlled, thus this point is used when the sea is
raging or flooding, causing panic and fear. Use it to calm the Spirit. It is just as
dangerous as a fire when it is out of control.

Name Recover Flow
Fu: To recover; to turn around
Liu: To slide, glide, flow; smooth; swift current
Alternate Names: Deep-Lying White,
Deep-Lying Mortar, Returning White,
Glorious Yang, Outer Life

In modern usage the characters liu, meaning to remain or stay, and liu, meaning to
flow, are clearly distinguished from one another. They were not so in classical usage.
With both the above meanings in mind, the point name can serve as a reminder of the
two main diseases that KI 7 treats, i.e., water swelling (in which water remains at
some location) and spontaneous perspiration (where there is repeated flow of
sweat).

LJ In Daoist numerology the number seven corresponds to both the loss and return of
original nature. The importance of KI 7 in clearing a Husband/Wife imbalance is such
that this point merits particular attention. The energetic dynamics of the transition from
the Yi- jings hexagram 23 (Splitting Apart) to hexagram 24 (The Return). .
.precisely corresponds to the energetic function of KI 7. Hexagram 24, The
Return, is representative of the reappearance of yang within the primordial yin and
the continual renewal of water that occurs at the winter solstice. The Book of Balance
and Harmony states, The inner medicine is the primordial point of true yang, the
celestial. It is likened to the center line in the Yi-Jing trigram for heaven. When it

KI 7 Returning Current
mates with earth, that forms water. The center line of the trigram for water represents
true inner sense, which is firm, and, hence, symbolized by metal, so it is called metal

in water. These are all names for ultimate vitality. When the ultimate vitality is stable,
it reverts to generative energy. It is this generative energy which fuels another round
of evolution as the seasons of life move along the sheng cycle. In this same manner, KI
7, as the metal point within the water element, tonifies kidney yin and yang so that
the integrity of the primordial qi remains strong, the fires of ming men are kindled, and
the heavenly energy is not exhausted by mundane yin influences.

An alternative name for KI 7, the key point for helping a patient return is wai-ming,
meaning beyond destiny. This name indicates that if one has failed to return at the
correct time, physical illness may have proceeded farther than treatment is able to
restore. Treated at this point in time, KI 7 may still help the patient in his transition
from life to death as he returns to the primal Dao. . . . there are two ways of
returning.

1) The first involves returning to the root in life, represented by the yuan-qi, which
manifests the will of heaven stored there. Here, one continually establishes the
connection between metal and water, which allows for the perpetual return and
coming into being. However, if one turns ones back on destiny, and the link
between metal and water is broken, then one perishes, returning to the mysterious
workings of the eternal Dao.

2) In treatment, there are times when the separation of yin and yang progresses
beyond the point from which therapy can restore physical health. However, even
then, it is still possible to restore the patients consciousness of original nature so that
destiny may be fulfilled. Ultimately, the internal tradition of healing is concerned with
the evolution of the individual rather than solely with his survivalthe domain
of modern medicine. The practitioner of the internal tradition is always assisting the
patient in his return to original nature. When heaven will this renewal of life, the
practitioner supports furthering that life, and continues in that effort even when the
connection between metal and water has separated and the condition has gone
beyond what nature can restore. The Book of Lie Zi reminds us, Dying is the virtue
in us going to its destination. The men of old called a dead man a man who has gone
back. Saying that the dead have gone back they implied that the living are travelers.
The traveler who forgets to go back is a man who mistakes his home.

Other
Without a returning current there would be drought and the sea would be
overflowing. For harmony there should be a coming and going.
Without a return you get rigidity in the Body Mind Spirit. All fluid must return
where it comes from, the mind must be free flowing.
JG: When the tide is coming in, this point provides the ability to complete
things. Its a returning back home into yourself. Think of this in terms of the flow
of the Body, Mind and Spirit.

Name Intersection Reach
Jiao: To connect, intersect; to deliver
Xin: Faith, trust, evidence; true

The character xin implies reaching out, in much the same way as does the English
word faith. Since after KI 8 the kidney channel proceeds to intersect with the liver
and spleen channels at 3 Yin crossing, it could be said that from this point the
channel is reaching toward that intersection.

Faith, xin, is the virtue related to the earth phase; this character can therefore be
construed as a representation of spleen-earth, giving the point name the implied
meaning of an intersection within earth (i.e. at sp6).

Other
This point is good for the mental level. Shangai call it communicate belief.
Use for extremely anxious thought, anxiety or extreme containment.
Its good for interconnections between groups, people; the official is dependent
on the harmonious exchange of ideas, responsibilities and knowledge. Affecting
fluidity at this point makes mutual exchange possible.

JG: This point is good for anxious thinking, for someone overly contained in
themselves. This is for someone who is really powerful in themselves but all
locked up and not presenced. Theres a lot of strength and ambition that doesnt
come up and out. Deliver reassurance: speak with deep sincerity in a way that

Name Great Manifestation
Da: Large, big, great
He: Bright, luminous or awe-inspiring
Alternate Names: Yin Gate, Yin Link

KI 12 shares the exuberant yin qi of the penetrating vessel which intersects the Ki
channel at this point, and in females is close to the womb, where essence gathers.
Great Manifestation somewhat exaggeratedly reflects this abundance of yin at this
point.

Other

JG: Use moxa here if you can. This point is used on the spirit level when there
is an unyielding quality. What will happen if I let go of this fear? This point
supports letting go of the fear and reassures that you will have what you need to
handle it. Brightnessa quality that someone has lost their way a bit, their spirit
is repressed (from within or outside). Lightness or brightness of being is missing.

Name Qi Hole
Qi: qi
Xue: Acupuncture point; cave, hole
Alternate Names: Infants Door, Uterine Gate

This point is cited in A Treatise on Cold Damage as the location of the manifestation
of kidney qi. Furthermore, the kidney rules qi absorption and KI 13 is located close
to where that absorption takes place. For these reasons it is named Qi Hole.

The alternate names differ for each side of the body. Infants Door is the point on the
right. Uterine Gate is the name given to the point on the left.

Other

Name Fourfold Fullness
Si: Four
Man: Full, complete
Alternate Names: Marrow Mansion,
Marrow Center

This point treats distension and fullness of the abdomen due to accumulation of any
of four things: blood, qi, digesta, or water-damp. Thus the name can be thought of
as indicating that the point treats these 4 fullnesses.

Fourfold Fullness also refers to the fullness in the lower abdomen that distends in the
four directions, a condition relieved by treating KI 14.

In the Chinese calendar, xiao man, meaning brief fullness, Is the eighth solar term,
which occurs between May 21 and June 4. During this time a constellation of four
stars is prominent in the night sky. KI 14 may be named Fourfold Fullness in reference
to this period because the eighth solar term is a time of flourishing on the earth, and
KI 14 is located near the Cinnabar Field (dan tien), which is the place on the body
where qi thrives.

Name Central Flow
Zhong: Center, middle
Zhu: To flow, to pour; to fix on

The name Central Flow can be thought of as a reminder that the point is located in
the center of the body at a place where the Ki qi flows into the penetrating vessel.
Alternatively, it is also where water qi flows down into the bladder. This point is
located in the area from which the essential qi that is extracted from digesta flows
from the central burner out to the five viscera; the name Central Flow conveys this
meaning. Consider too, that the ministerial fire flows down from this point into the
Cinnabar Field (dan tien).

Viewing Zhong as representing Zhong yi, an old name for underwear, introduces
another interpretation. The point marks the site of the border of underwear and in this
case , zhu means to attach.

Other

Name Huang Shu
Huang: the area just below the diaphragm
Shu: acupuncture point

The kidney channel passes through the abdomen and then proceeds up to the Huang
area. Because of this and the points effectiveness in treating disorders of the huang
area, it is called Huang Shu. The character Huang can refer to either the bladder or
the region below the heart. In either case, it is related to the kidney. It is not
surprising that all the point names that contain the character huang are found on the
kidney and bladder channels.

Other

Guan: Gate, custom, frontier pass; juncture. To connect, to involve, to inform. To close,
to shut, to fasten.

The function here is the help given by the KI to the essences of the ST, from digestion, to
support them going where needed and doing what needs to be done. For example, it will
aid in making essences to form blood, even the blood of the uterus, making a woman healthy

Name Open Valley
Tong: to free, unblock, to pass through
Gu: valley; grain
Alternate names: Freeing the Grain, Upper
Gate
Essential Questions mentions that large areas of flesh are called valleys. This is why
such points as LI 4and KI 20, which are in fleshy areas, are called valleys (especially
in contrast to ravines, such as KI 3 and SI 3, which are located where the flesh is
much less abundant). KI 20 is in the valley formed by the muscles of the central
abdomen. The qi of the kidney channel passes through this region as if it were
traversing a mountain valley.

The ideogram gu, in addition to its meaning of valley, is frequently used as a
substitute for the homophone which means grain (which, perhaps coincidentally, is
often grown in a valley). If taken in this way, the point name can be said to refer to
the use of this point in aiding digestion, or to the fact that digesta passes through this
area. In this case the alternate translation Freeing the Grain might serve well.

Other
A valley is often a soft and peaceful place, sheltered, fertile, with a water source
and food. It gives a sense of tranquility and protection; its a safe haven. The
water in the valley acts as a cleansing channel, taking away waste products, like
Meridian Gutter on the LU meridian. This valley helps us through our fears to
comfort. It allows the patient to climb mountains and see further (you cant see
when youre in the bottom of the valley).
As a person lets go of something old they move through a dark passage where
things are not so clear. They risk going forward through unfamiliar land, the spirit
moves on through the valley.
The KI is the deepest predominantly yin official which gives strength in dealing
with darkness. It helps confront and penetrate it.

Name/ER Dark Gate
You: dark gloomy; secret, subtle, hidden
Men: gate, door
Alternate Name: Upper Gate

This conveys the image of a fine thread of silk, nearly invisible and impalpable, hidden
inside a mountain. The hidden treasure in the mountain. The term dark refers to
secret, hidden, not dark in color. This is the same name as the pylorus which is
hidden in the depths of the abdomen. This is the door to what is hidden in my
heart; the door to the upper jiao. It controls the rising movement of the essences
which is necessary to sustain my vital spirits. In Taoist texts, the Kidneys are referred
to as this dark, subtle, hidden organ and in this way are linked to the origin.

Other
This is for patients going through hell and see no way out, they are really in a
dark place. If the patient is clinging to a raft for survival, think of this point.
This point is like going back to a dark place previously visited and opening a
door to a black cave where something is hidden (a fear). It then gives the
strength and will to face this fear.
This point keeps the balance of work/rest, laughter/crying. It gives balance
between night and day, darkness and light.
The person may have the gate stuck closed and can only think negative thoughts.
They cant see the light of life, think only of evil, hostile, mistrust, negativity.
If the gate is stuck open the person may feel exposed and can get no peace or
tranquility because their mind never turns off.

Name/ER Corridor Walk
Bu: a step; on foot
Lang: corridor, veranda, porch; upward path
Alternate Names: Walking Gentlemen

This point has to do with the KI function of protecting the center, but not being in
the center itself (being lateral). It relates to the movement of the diaphragm.

LJ Here the kidney meridian rises off the abdomen and up onto the rib cage. The
character lang gives the sense of a corridor, verandah or "upward path." The previous
points on the kidney meridian, Ki 18, 19, 20 and 21, tell through their names a
story of a journey through darkness: Stone border, Yin Capital, Through the Valley,
and Dark Gate respectively. The kidney meridian reaches the highlands of the rib cage
and then the flow of qi shifts to PC I. Kidney points which follow the exit point
represent the deepest reserves of spiritual energy on the meridian. These points form a
corridor along the rib cage similar to the animal figures found lining the spirit road of
the ancient imperial mausoleums. KI 24, Spirit Burial Ground, precisely calls forth
these imperial burial places. The kidney function represents the depths of self as it is
present in the yuan qi and jing. This E/E combination helps one make the transition
from this deep journey with its attendant fears to empowering the joys and pleasures
associated with the pericardium

Other
A verandah is a place on the outside of a house, where you can sit in tranquility
and breathe fresh air. There is the sense of retirement, the old folks on their
rocking chair with a rug wrapped around their legs.
After an illness or operation the first few steps of a person may be made onto
the verandah. Going there, where they are outside but protected from the
elements helps a person begin to look forward and face the outside world again.
JG: This is a very supporting point if something from the past is bubbling up,
the unconscious moving into the conscious (for example, there is a fear of sexual
expression and that expression is coming out, this helps alleviate that fear). This
point provides a way to be outside and still protected.

Name/ER Spirit Seal
Shen: spirit
Feng: to seal; a border

This is similar in meaning to KI 25. There is the idea that the spirits are held, kept
close. Feng is a representation of a handa symbol of authority. Earth is depicted
twice which can mean a limitation of a territory or vegetation growing on a territory.
These characters together mean the possession of a territory; a fief. It has the meaning
of conferring a territory to a Lord. The territory has boundaries, which means
defending against invaders. The Lord will be master of the territory and will have to
defend it. Border control. Also, the Earth on Earth indicates a mound; a hill; a high
point; an eminence. A place to which you go to offer a sacrifice (Feng). Feng was
offered by the Emperor to the Spirits of Heaven (a secret sacrifice, not public). He
asked the Spirits to bestow the Benevolent Influences (Ling, see KI 24) to the
kingdom. There is a similar image in Tan Zhongan altar for rituals. In this way the
KI obtains the good influences of Heaven for the benefit of the Heart. Feng
(sacrifice) is found in only one other point, LR 4. (It has to do with heaven too,
has to do with the organization of the Zang). At the level of the HT, these KI
points support and guard the Heart. It is often compared to the Forbidden City:
the ruler has to be in the center and well-protected.

LJ This point treats shen, which is the yang of heart spirit. It empowers one to
experience that the truth found in ones heart is there by virtue of heavens mandate
(ming: destiny). No external confirmation need be sought in order to justify actions
based on ones inner truth. Shen is the character indicating heart spirit and, in a larger
sense, the active impulses which emanate from heaven. Feng is composed of the
characters for earth doubled alongside the character for a hand affixing a seal of
authority. In ancient China, when the emperor invested a noble, a mound of earth
would be taken from the imperial altar and placed on the nobles altar as a symbol of
the emperors authority. This mound represents the gods of the earth (she) which
were worshiped in ancient China. The she (earth altar) stood in sacred groves which
themselves may have earlier been the object of the cult. In ancient times they were

KI 23 Spirit Seal
marked by a sacred tree and a pole. The she were quite open to the air. It was
paramount, as telluric deities, that they remain exposed to atmospheric influences in
order to constantly imbibe from the heavenly qi and shen. In order to deprive them of
power, as at the conquest of a state, it was only necessary to enclose them with a
roof and walls and thus shut off their access to sunlight and air. When the Shang
empire was overthrown, its dynamic she was enclosed with an opening facing north,
so that only debilitating influences could reach it. Here, the potential power of earth
(yin) has been cutoff from the sunlight (shen), the activating influences from heaven.
Thus, the power of the dynasty dwindled as it lost its mandate from both heaven and
the emperor. This scenario is similar to what happens in the individual when he
receives only influences from the north (water element) and no activating impulses
form the shen or heart (southfire element). Cut off from the warmth of his heart,
which is sealed, his own power diminishes. Zhuang Zi virtually describes the genesis
and picture of kidney depletion to which this point speaks: Mens little fears are
mean and trembly; their great fears are stunned and overwhelming . . . they fade like
fall and wintersuch is the way they dwindle day by day. They drown in what they
doyou cannot make them turn back. They grow dark as though sealed with seals
such are the excesses of their old age. And when their mind draws near to death,
nothing can restore them to the light. Here, Zhuang Zi describes a person whose
heart spirit has been sealed so that the shen, the brightness of life, cannot manifest
and activate. The patient in which this point is indicated may show a lack of authority
on all levels. Often, he may exhibit a sense of being out of touch with his purpose in
life and his spiritual identity. Spirit Seal can help [that person realize] that no external
confirmation in life is needed to choose a course of action. One need only follow the
inner knowing that this direction is present in ones heart as placed there by heaven,
the highest authority. Ultimately, Spirit Seal can help restore the interaction between
the potential present in the kidney official and the mandate from ones own heart and
the heart of heaven (shen).
Other
A seal is a form of identificationits the wax seal on a piece of parchment
paper, the seal of approval. It is a stamp of identity unique to that person only.
This point is used when a person cannot feel or see their identity, who they
really are.
This point brings together fragments to bring a sense of wholeness to a persons
sense of himself.
Water CFs particularly can feel disconnected, disempowered and this point can
bring them together to be more of who they are.
This point should not be used immediately after possession, as it would be much
too soon.
JG: This is especially appropriate when a person despises or hates themselves. It
allows them to recognize their own spirit and value and uniqueness. It brings
together the fragments of a person. It can be a good point to use for a split
personality. It provides a sense of circular containment and allows the person to
stake a claim. Its good for sealing work that has already been done (might do
after IV 24). This claims the unique character one is born with and obtains as
life unfolds.

KI 23 Spirit Seal

More Information on KI 23, 24, 25
Kidney 23, 24, and 25 are of paramount importance in maintaining balance between the yin (ling) and
yang (shen) of the heart spirit. Taken together, these three points may be seen as constructing the Yi-jing
trigram li which is paired with fire. Therefore, it is interesting to note that the trigram for fire exists on
the kidney (water) meridian over the heart (fire) in the upper jiao, which corresponds to heaven. Hence
on the deepest possible level, the functions of these points relate to the integration of the yin (ling) and
yang (shen) aspects of the heart spirit. Taking these as lines of an Yi-jing trigram to denote their relative
yin and yang characteristics yields:

Yang: Kidney 23 Shen Yin: Kidney 24 Ling Yang: Kidney 25 Shen

They may be considered to address the most fundamental level of balance between yin and yang of the
human spirit. The functional balance of these energies is essential if life is to proceed spontaneously and
effectively.

Name/ER Spirit Ruins
Ling: Spirit (similar, but more yin than shen)
Xu: ruins, old burial grounds, residence
Alternate Name: Spirit Wall

Ling: The top part of Ling is rain, the bottom is a feminine shaman. It is the image of
a woman dancing to bring rain, the benevolent influence of heaven. Benevolent
influences linked with spirits; rain from the heavens; timely rain. This is the visible
manifestation of benevolent influences; all that comes from above and has an effect.
When things work efficiently, efficaciously, good influences are obtained. Something
coming from above with some marvelous, prodigious effects. When in communication
with spirits of heaven, a power is available to you. Intelligent, ingenious. Efficacious.
Ling is very close in meaning to Shen. Shen refers to the Presence of the Spirits.
Ling refers to the effects of the presence of the Spirits. Supernatural, spiritual, divine.
Xu: Soil; ground; earth or void; emptiness; no obstacle; free circulation. Mound;
eminence; cumulus. Ruin of an old city or castle. A town that was destroyed, dead.
Wild land, with nothing there. Marketplace; fair. This meaning of marketplace
implies that movement is easily achieved, that there is no blockage, as in the free
movement and exchange in a marketplace. This meaning also refers to a good kind of
emptiness, the kind that permits no blockage. This is the emptiness in the body that
makes things useful. The emptiness and free circulation of the Heart allows the
benevolent influences to be received and distributed through the Blood. Thus the
power of Life becomes effective and sustaining.

This point name implies a free circulation between KI 23 and KI 25 where the spirits
are held close. The benevolent influences implied in this point come from the position
between the spirits of these other two points. This point eliminates any obstacles to
this free circulation between KI 23 and KI 25. It provides the diffusion of
benevolent influences coming from the presence of the Spirits in KI 23 and KI 25.

LJ This point resurrects the ling, which is the yin of the heart spirit. It brings the qualities
of water to the desert of a barren heart. The etymology of the character ling has been
discussed and relates to the power and potential of the heart spirit to effect change.
Xu means emptiness or that which contains nothing and is the medical term meaning
deficiency or exhaustion. The character xu is a picture of two men on a hill looking in

KI 24 Spirit Burial Ground

all directions, yet nothing can be seen, for they are in a wild and barren high upland
terrain. The imperial burial grounds in ancient China were located in exactly such
places. Hence, the translation of xu as burial ground. Ling is present in the title of
the Lingshu the spiritually efficacious axis. Both the characters xu and ling are
associated with the potentiality of the empty vortex whirling between heaven and
earth. The Dao De Jing states that the Daos axis in empty yet inexhaustible and
that it is precisely this emptiness which gives the Dao its use. When the aspect of
being addressed by Kidney 24 is in balance, an individual may feel connected to the
well spring of Dao, lifes greatest resource, and experience himself as a potent and
effective force in the world. When Kidney 24 is indicated therapeutically, the
potential (ling) to manifest in life is exhausted (xu), giving the sense that ones ling
spirit has died. The patients life may appear like a barren wasteland, scorched by the
impulses of the hearts shen, but with little potential to manifest. With the ling spirit
dried up and depleted, the individual may grow sad as they grow increasingly cut off
from their spiritual source and power in life. This exhaustion on a basic level may be
predicated by a weakened jing and deficient yin. The patient evidences an internal
spiritual crumbling which parallels the physical disintegration taking place as lifes
resources dry up. This point speaks to the spiritual aspect of the imbalance by treating
the relationship between the heart and the kidneys in the upper burner. Spirit Burial
Ground can help restore the patients experience of herself as a potent force in the
universe by returning her to her spiritual source. The quality of energy present in this
point may be likened to bringing water to the desert so that life may flourish. For
more info see KI 23.

JG: RESURRECTION. This point helps when there is a lost sense of Who am
I, when there is a feeling of total resignation down to the last little spark. Use
when the spirit appears quite buried. Its good for children when the spark is not
as present as you would expect. You can also use it when someone is involved
in spiritual practices where there has been a dispersing of the energy; this point
allows the energy back in. This is a beginning point. It provides access to
ancestral wisdom and guidance.

Name/ER Spirit Storehouse
Shen: spirit
Cang: to store; the viscera

Here there is the idea that the spirits are held, kept close. The meaning of Zang is to
have enough of life on the inside to be protected against the winter; to have life in
the root, as a plant gathers its life to its roots through the winter. To receive in the
depths in order to protect and prepare for new birth. The implication is that this
movement is closer to the origin, to the pure expression of the quality of life;
authentic. This character may also mean to bury; to bury as a seed, or as a corpse.

Among the five Zang, the KI keeps the purity of the essences by its relationship with
the origin. The quality of the essences of the five zang at the level of the HT reflects
the ability to please and attract the spirits. The meaning is a gourd in which the spirits
are kept (this is the idea of the five zang) which reflects this function of the zang to
attract the spirits by the purity and authenticity of their transformed essences. To
keep deeply is a function of the Kidneys. The idea is to keep deeply in order to
keep life, to keep the spirits present; to keep deeply, preciously, actively the
essences. One function of the KI is to keep the Spirits. NOT as a storehouse,
but rather like a sponge, completely pervaded by essences. Among the five Zang,
the KI keeps the essences that relate to the Origin: Jing and its deep relationships
with Shen. So, this name is appropriate on the KI meridian at the level of the Heart.
The Essences (Ling) are on the side of Yin; the Spirits (Shen) are on the side of
Yang. Ling and Shen always show up together in point names, and almost always
near the Heart or on the head, e.g. HT 7 Shenmen and HT 4 Ling Dow; GV 11
Shen Dao and GV 10 Ling Tai; GB 18 Shang Ling and GB 13 Ben Shen.. So,
Ling and Shen have to do with the Heart

LJ This point contains a reserve of shen, which is the yang of heart spirit. The first
character, shen, as in KI 23, indicates the heart spirit. The character cang means to
hide or conceal and also has the meaning of storehouse. Here we are given the
image of a reserve of spirit (shen), which is stored in the heart. Thus, when a
patients shen is deficient or hidden, KI 25 can act as a storehouse of spiritual

KI 25 Spirit Storehouse

energy. Cang is a homophone of the character cang, meaning compliancy. This
character is an image of an official kneeling prostrate before his master, whose
authority may be symbolized by the halberd. Spirit Storehouse may not only access a
reserve of shen, but also help the heart-mind (the emperor) enforce its commands
with the authority and respect it deserves from its officials (the other energetic
functions of the body/mind/spirit). For more information on KI 23-25 see KI 23

Other
Use this point when a person is totally depleted. Its a reservoir to use when we
need to fill the reserves. It strengthens the Spirit where the Spirit is alive but
undernourished. Its good for the mental level: worry, anxiety, insomnia. If the
storehouse is empty there is desperation & fear (starvation).
For people with no joy in being alive, who are in a mental rut. For people who
are not quite sure what they want.
Its useful on patients who use up their stores as soon as they get them.
We can get a mixture of quality and volume change; its a very special place.
JG: This point accesses a deep spring or reservoir. It promotes perseverance and
determination. It has a direct effect on the mental level. Its for someone who
uses their reserves the moment they are built up. Its good to consider as a
patient starts to get better. If you use it too soon, the patient may use the new
access to vitality as a quick fix. The level of depletion is more for IV 25 than IV
27. It shows up as powerful fears, significant anxiety, and/or strong depression.
If you are not sure what the patient needs more of, here is a little bit and the
BMS will know what to do with it, how to use it and how to bring it forth.

Name/ER Elegant Center
Yu: Elegant, cultured; flourishing
Zhong: Center, middle
Alternate Names: Lively Center, Possible
Center, Within Bounds

Yu: Elegant, rich, beautiful. Something that is beautiful because it is completely
accomplished; full fruition. There is the idea of organizing a territory by laws (mouth)
and by military (spear). Similar to the character for the word country. The
meaning is of organizing the territories in an elegant way so the work gets done and
the taxes paid. When everything is well-organized and well-regulated, you get good
circulation and full fruition.
Zhong: Center. This point is off-center so it may mean the five Zang together make
the center of my Life. Innermost. Place of gathering and distributing.

KI 26 is at the level of CV 20 and reflects all of the functions of the Lung.

Other
Use this point when a person doesnt have much sense of their own grace,
beauty, self-respect or respect for others. Its about quality.
Use to restore self-respect, give a lift. People get dirty, miserable, fed up when
very sickthey can lose perspective and be stuck in doom and gloom.
Its usually used after other kidney chest points. If used too son the person will
not see the elegance
JG: this is good for a person who is lacking a sense of their own beauty, self-
respect or respect for others. Its helpful for someone who is just going through
the motions, flat, suck in gloom and doom. Its a good point for discouragement;
Im halfway throughhow am I going to get through this?

Name/ER Shu Mansion
Shu: acupuncture point; to transport
Fu: mansion; storehouse; treasury

When we put Shu with Fu at this level there is the idea of coming back to the
depths. The proper movement of the KI comes from the depths, KI 1 to KI 10,
then hides until KI 11 (groin) where it starts again. When the meridian reaches KI
27 it descends into the chest to meet the PC. The proper movement of KI is to go
to the depths when it is important.

Other
Use as a basic energetic reserve. Most of our patients have no reserves. When a
person is unable to build up their reserve, this will help a person stock up.
Use when the depletion is more to do with the person than their spirit--theyre
burning themselves out, spending their reserves.
For any affectation of the chest.
The best point on the body for tremendous irritability, especially when brought
about through mental strain.
For a more general effect on Body Mind Spirit
There is a close relationship with Earth, affecting the reserves of all of the
officials.
JG: This point has a direct effect on the mental level, particularly irritability
when a person is unable to build up reserves. Its a storehouse for the will,
essence, ambition, determination, tenacity, and perseverance. It helps get a
person through something that is already midway. There is an ability to build
reserves here and call on reserves the person doesnt have access to on their
own.
