The Governor Vessel Channel

Main Channel
1. The Du Mai originates in
the uterus/lower abdomen,
descends as a deep
pathway to the genitals and
perineum to meet CV 1,
then goes to the tip of the
coccyx.

2. The Du Mai surfaces at the
tip of the coccyx (GV 1)
and travels up the spine and
over the head to GV 28
on the upper gum.

3. At GV 16, (the nape of
the neck) a branch enters
the brain, then emerges at
the vertex (GV 20) to join
the main pathway.

4. From GV 12, deep bilateral branches go to BL 12 and then rejoin the main pathway at GV 13.

Some texts attribute other pathways to the Du Mai:

1. A branch from the coccyx to the gluteal region, meeting the Bladder and Kidney meridians before
returning to the spine and the kidneys. (D: originates in the lower abdomen, descends to the
genitals and perineum, winds around the anus, ascends the interior of the spinal column, and enters
the kidneys)

2. Two bilateral branches form the medial canthus of the eye (BL 1), ascending the forehead to meet
at the vertex, then descending through the brain and the neck to run parallel with the spine down to
the kidneys.

3. A branch from the lower abdomen ascending through the umbilicus, heart and trachea, then crossing
the cheek, encircling the mouth, and ending just inferior to the center of the eye.

Luo Channel
The luo channel arises at GV 1 and ascends bilaterally along the sides of the spine to the nape
of the neck and spreads over the occiput.
At the scapular region it connects with the Bladder channel and threads through the spine.

Being associated with yang, the GV is
both long and strong. As this is the
first point on the vessel, it can
represent the entirety of it.

If the GV is weak, the whole body is
weak. If it is replete, the spine is stiff.
By treating such conditions, GV 1
controls or leads the strength of the entire body.

The name refers to this points role in giving strength and vitality to the whole spinal
column and the GV. Its a very powerful point that reinforces the persons total energy.
This point is a way to bring in energy from the heavens and resurrect the officials.
Use for instability, lack of coordination, and lack of cooperation.
Use when the person is completely distraughtit feels like theyre going to blow their
top.
Its similar to GV 12both give resolution to the spirit. It gives vitality and strengths
and makes it available.

GV 1 Long Strength

This point resuscitates.
Its very good for MS and great with moxa
Use locally for weakness in the bottom of the spine, vaginal, urterine and anal prolapse.
It strengthens the lower back and you might sedate it if the person is in a lot of pain and
is very rigid.
JG: This point is about your fundamental connection to your own root of power in the
universe manifesting as strength, survival, passion and sexuality. It provides strength to the
spine to stand up in the world. It brings the power to see things through and the ability
to hold steady in the face of adversity and injustice. It gives a person to the ability to
hold ones own in the presence of anothers opinion. It gives the ability to see difficulty
as a teacher, to see beyond the present difficulty. KI, LR, GV reunite here. Its like a
kick in the butt. Use for chronic weakness with GV 20 (raises qi above the abyss
making new vision possible). When this is not connected there is an absence of upward

Name/ER Lumbar Shu
Yao: This character without the flesh radical
means key place, strategic position, important
point. It is this idea that the lumbar area is a
key place in the body. We find this in its relationship with the kidneys, with the
bone and marrow. All the movement of the body in bending and moving upright
originates here. The strength of the body to be vertical derives from this area, a
manifestation of the double strength of the kidneys. There is the idea of strength
which relies on the original essences. This ability to be in the vertical position, this
strength, and also the ability to move from this position of uprightness makes this area
an important place in the body.

Yu: Transporting Point. Now, GV 2 is not located in the lumbar area, but there is
the idea of transmission, or transporting activity to the lumbar area.

The overall meaning is that when we puncture this point, we may have an effect on
the lumbar area. Also, this is a place where intruders can invade to get into the
interior. There is a special correspondence here with all that is making the strength,
the life, and the good functioning of the lumbar area. This points gives direction to
the Du Mai to nourish the bone and marrow.

Name/ER Lumbar Yang Pass
Yao: lumbus, lower back; kidney;

Yang: yang, the complement of yin
Guan: Gate, pass. If there is a gate, it is
either open or closed. But even if it is closed, it is still the only way to go in. Sometimes
you are stopped and cannot enter, but it is the only right way to enter. This character may
have meaning to close or to shut; to connect or cut-off.

This is a gate for the yang in the lumbar area. At the level of this point, we have the root of
the backbone, the sacrum. We are at the very beginning of the articulated bones making the
backbone. There is a passage of the yang, a kind of regulation of all the yang in this area. It
is a passage also, in that it gives the ability to move to the next point, which is the Ming
Men. All the yang is coming back to the origin, creating a kind of rooting of the right use of
the yang in the body and the function of the Du Mai.

This point gives strengths to the legs. (There is another point GB 33 that has almost this
exact name ---Xi Yang Guan. This point also gives strength to the lower part of the body.)
This point has an effect locally, but also supports the action of the yang throughout the body.
There is special activity in this point to sustain the yang of the LI, as we are the same level of
the Shu point for LI. Du Mai is able to support the regulation of the yang of the
corresponding Shu points, but with a different implication than the actual Shu point. For
example, for the LI at this level, this point maintains the normal level of temperature regulation
and circulation of this area and treats all manner of LI-related symptoms. This point is more
used to increase the yang and the circulation of the yang.

This is a point recently added to the Du Mai. This point was certainly used, but only
included recently (11
th
century) on the Du Mai.

Other
This point is a passageway from the loins to the legs. Its good for low back problems
affecting the legs and knees (i.e. sciatica).
This point regulates yin and yang and acts as important joint or hinge that influences the
backs mobility.

Name/ER Life Gate
Ming: Life. The character is made with a kind of
gathering, a union. Then there is the mark of authority
a seal, or a scepterthe symbol of royal
authority. When there is something gathering together with the royal authority, it becomes a
decree, a law. Now everyone is supposed to obey the decree. There is the symbol for
mouth because in order to be obeyed, the decree has to be proclaimed. So the first meaning
of the character is that there is an order given by a recognized authority and proclaimed in
such a way that everyone has to obey.

In ancient times, there was the special meaning that this authority that had given such an order
was nature itself. The order is simply to follow the natural order; to accomplish a life
following the proper nature that each of us has. Just being exactly what I am and acting
according to nature, I will fulfill my destiny. There is no other destiny but to be and to
recognize this quality of life which was put in this little embryo to develop into an adult--and
develop itself to its utmost self.

Each of us has some kind of ability, strength, and characterwe each have to develop them
to the highest level and never deviate from what they are, from what our natures are. Humans
are unique in being able to act in an unnatural way. A tree is doing its best to be a good
tree even if it has little soil and poor rain, or grows between the stones of a wall, or is
knocked by the wind. Normally these trees do their best to be a tree. Human beings are
different because they are not only dependent on their own proper nature to develop life,
they also have a propensity of power within them which is analagous to Heaven (the Heart).
Because of this they are capable of initiative, which a tree is not capable of. So human beings
have the ability to do things and act in a way that is not the best possible use of life within
them. So, for example, I have life; it is not exactly my life, it is rather life within me. And
this life within me is not acting in accordance with naturethis is what leads to human
disease. Ming is how I am able to do something with my life that is as close as possible to
the universal movement of life.

GV 4 Gate of Life

Men: Gate, door. There is no indication whether or not the door is open or closed.
Ming Men has a close relationship with the proper nature, with the origin, with the Kidneys,
the root of the origin. In the Su Wen, Ming Men has the meaning of the eyes. Ming Men
is the destiny of my life, my origin, my proper nature. Ming Men as the eyes, means I can
see what I am doing with my proper nature. My destiny will be accomplished with this
interplay between the Water and the Fire, between the Heart and Kidneys. My eyes will
offer a perception of how close I am to the universal movement of life or how far I am from
this movement. This life within me has also the limits of its nature.

At the same level is the Shu points of the Kidneys. We are also on the Du Mai which
indicates the key relationships of the yang of my life and the yang of my origin. The function
of Du Mai is to control the yang through relating to the original yang.

LJ Ming men may be considered synonymous with the dan tian or lower cinnabar field found in
spiritual alchemy. Here, the original and authentic yin and yang, as endowed by heaven,
reside. Ming men is the crucible that contains the infusion of ones authentic (zhen) water and
fire. The interaction of this authentic water and fire conforms to the real nature, the deep
nature of an individual. Simultaneous to this interaction is the infusion of the inherited
constitution (anterior heaven) with the acquired constitution (posterior heaven).

The composite term shen-jing indicates the infusion of the activating influence of shen with the
potential for manifestation (jing). It is the directionality of this interaction as focused by the
will (zhi) that determines the extent to which an individual is able to fully express his authentic
self and the extent to which habitual [non-authentic] behavior occurs.

The establishment of ming as defined by Mencius involves nourishing ones original nature
within and accepting heaven without. This results in an alignment of mans will with heavens
will. This alignment is synonymous, on an energetic level, with the clear infusion of anterior
and posterior heaven in ming men unsullied by the accretions of lifes experience and habitual,
mundane consciousness. Hence, the image from internal alchemy of stoking the furnace of the
dan tian, to burn off the refuse of acquired conditioning and return original nature.

Other
This is the Cinnabar Field, a reservoir of energy, vitality. Its a very powerful point.
This point brings a person to a new level of consciousness about their sense of what life
is about. This point brings forth the power of our inheritance, emerging from the void in
the center. It helps use fulfill our power, living fully and becoming our full potential.
If this gate is opening and closing it should adjust to all of our needs. If it is jammed, life
is threatened. You can revitalize the body, mind and spirit here, so consider it for people
lacking in strength and vitality.
This point takes energy from the seas and oceans.
It activates the jing in the Kidneys.
Use moxa when the pulses are all low.
Can use for intermittent fevers, where the body gets intensely hot or cold and when
there is excessive perspiration or none at all.
If there are any problems with hot symptoms this point might cause an aggravation.
If the person is completely berserk you might consider sedating this point, but this is an
extreme thing to do.
If there is excess (like heavy menses) then sedate this point. If menses are scanty, tonify.
Its useful for Water CFs who have terrible lack of reserves.

GV 5 Suspended Pivot

Name/ER Suspended Pivot
Xuan: to suspend, to hang; space
Shu: pivot, axis

These two characters together give the image of a vertical movement of suspension, and
through the pivot more of an idea of horizontal movement and distribution. This is at same
level as TH Shu point. So this area is about distribution of qi and essences downward and
upward (as the Triple Heater does) and throughout. There is a lot of connection here with
the activities of the Triple Heater and with this function of distributing well upward and
downward, and everywhere.

This point is on the back at the level of the base of the stomach, at the middle heater. So
there is also this communication between the lower and the middle heater, between anterior
heaven and posterior heaven that relates to the function of this point. The function is to make
sure that all that we build as essences and qi, as yang inside the body, will be correctly
expressed (related to the proximity to Ming Men). This is also the function of the Triple
Heater: the ability to distinguish the different kinds of qi in the different heaters and their
functions, but always through the basis of original qi. It takes the original qi and circulates it
throughout the body and to the four limbs. This point regulates the functioning of the Stomach
and Intestines and ensures the good expression of the strength of the Yang by relating this
regulation to the origin.

There is a relationship with CV 9 and this point.

Other
This point is good for back pain. If there is pain in the mid-back, use GV 7. If its in the
low back, use GV 5. If both, use the points together.
All things articulate and move on a suspended pivot, the pivot between yin and yang.
This is where we twist. If this point cant pivot, it leads to difficulty in movement,
rigidity, lumbago, sciatica, lower back pain and backaches. The mind and spirit also need
freedom of movement. These points (GV 5 & GV 7) can oil all of the pivots (which
are like hinges). It can give almost instant relief.
If the stools are very loose but formed, use moxa to tighten the bowels.

This point is actually in the middle of the spine if you take the starting point at the
first vertebra at the level of GV 2 and the top of the spine as the first vertebra at the
level of GV 14. This is a total of 21 vertebrae and this point is in the middle at
the level of the 11
th
vertebra.

It is at same level as the Spleen Shu point. The spleen is at the center of the body
(in the middle of the middle). The human body is not how it is by chance; the body
is something in the likeness of the universe, so there is some meaning in a location that
is in the middle of the middle. Roughly at the same level is the center of the Stomach
at CV 12. This point gives more yang to the Spleen or to this function that is the
center.

Warning: This point is very strongly forbidden in the classics to moxa. If you use
moxa you may induce Wei syndrome which is a kind of flaccid paralysis of limbs,
coming from insufficiency of watering of the muscles.

Other
This point has more of a mental level effect. Use for insanity, epilepsy, and
depression.
Moxa is usually forbiddenit may make the person insane or severely depressed
and forgetful.
Use with people who describe their back feeling like it is breaking in two.

Name/ER Central Pivot
Zhong: Center
Shu: pivot, axis

This was also a point added more lately to the GV meridian (although it was always
a point). It is on a level with the GB Shu points. These two characters fit very well
with the function of the Gall Bladder. The Gall Bladder is called the Fu of the
central essences. There is a relationship between GB and the good functioning of the
central heater.

Zhong is a good evocation of the function of the GB to keep the essences in the
center and to help the center with its essences. Shu fits very well with GB because
the meridian acts as a pivot between the Bladder and Stomach meridians. GB
represents the more superficial aspect of the yang relating to the BL, and the deepest
action of the yang through its relationship with the ST. GB is also a kind of pivot
between what is underground, the Water, the KI, the yin, the origin, and what is the
manifestation of the Fire, the Heart. It is also a pivot between anterior and posterior
heaven, between the KI and ST. This ability to be between, to be both an ordinary
Fu and an extraordinary Fu, describes the GB. Dai Mo is also a pivot between the
upward movement and the downward movement.

This point acts to help GB, to help the eyes and to help the SP. It affects the good
functioning of the SP and helps the yang of the SP to get rid of excess of dampness.
It also controls the yang of the GB so it does not injure the SP. The point is at the
level of the upper opening of the ST.

Other
This is a great point when used correctly, though GV 6 and 8 can do
everything GV 7 can but to a lesser degree.
This point is good for back pain. If there is pain in the mid-back, use GV 7. If
its in the low back, use GV 5. If both, use the points together.

Name/ER Sinew Contraction
Jin: Muscular forces, not exactly the muscle,
but muscular movement. This character
contains the image of bamboo which is never
motionless--just as our muscles are never still
there is always some kind of contraction or movement. Then there is the flesh radical and the
character for strength or force. So the idea is that we have this strength which is in the flesh
that enables us to move as the bamboo moves. This distinction is important because it is the
difference between the Liver and the Spleen. For points related to the SP you will have the
flesh radical, the mass of the flesh, the bulk, but you will not have the movement. The
movement belongs to the LR.

Suo: Made with the character for threads of silk, which also can mean to attach or to tie up.
Here it especially means to tie up, to shrink, to bind up fast, to have a spasmall this related
to the muscle.

The relationship with the Liver is obvious in the name of the point, and the Shu points of the
LR are at the same level. It is quite rare to have a pathology in the point name, but it is not
by chance when it does occur. This occurs on LR 12 which is also this kind of contraction of
the circulationJi Mai. This pathology in the name is to indicate that this function is easily
disturbed.

The LR is the root of supreme exhaustion according to the classics. This exhaustion is linked
to this kind of muscular movement. The LR is unable, through its function of good reasoning,
to stop the person from exhausting himself. The blood as well as the qi is exhausted through
this movement of the muscles. This, in the classical Chinese mind, was a great danger to life.

The LR, as the master of all this activity and the root of the strength to move, is the one
responsible for regulating movement. It is also the first organ to suffer from this excessive
movement and using up of vitality. So this point alludes to the muscular forces but is also
related to this danger of the pathology of the muscular forces. This danger of excessive yang
of the LR is represented in the symptoms.

GV 8 Contracted Muscle

Use this point for contracted or constricted muscles on a body, mind and spirit level.
Muscle might be more accurately called tendon/sinew.
From a physical standpoint, a person may present with inactive breathing with chest and
muscle pains along with digestive disorders.
This point has a connection with the Liver and helps spasms and convulsions.
This point is in the middle jiao but this point may help some heart spasms.
Usually use moxa.
This point opens the mind and the spirit.
This point has a great effect on the mental level and helps insecurity and instability. Use
when a persons eyes roll around or are fixed and theyre walking aimlessly about. This
point will anchor and ground the patient.
Like GV 4, its a whole body, mind and spirit treatment.

Zhi: extreme; to reach, to arrive
Yang: yang, the complement of yin
Alternate Names: Bottom of the Lung

GV 9 is located on the upper back, which is the most yang aspect of the body; it is
on the GV, which is the commander of yang qi; and it is positioned below the
seventh vertebra, seven being a number associated with yang. For all of these reasons,
the point is considered to be yang within yang or the extremity of yang.

Other
The GV is the most predominantly yang vessel of the body. This is the most
yang point on the upper back on GV. It is connected with the very source of
yang energy.
This point has to do with energy, vitality, movement and heat. It should be used
to bring about resurgence in the yangand only if that is what is needed.
It is almost a horary point for the GV. It relates to GV like GV 8 does to the
Liver.
Its the spines job to hold everyone up--use when there is aching in the bones.
GV 9, 10, 11 take the patient to a wonderful place. They part the heavens
and show them a place to be.
You must be very very careful when using this point. The patient must be near
balanced because it takes the energy to a higher place.

Name Spirit Tower
Ling: spirit, supernatural
Tai: terrace, platform, tower

Wen Wang, and emperor of the Zhou Dynasty, built a tower he called ling tai, the Spirit
Tower, from which he could look out over all his territory. The term ling has by extension
come to mean the faculties of reason or the mind. In Chinese thought the heart and mind are
nearly synomous, thus ling is also representative of the heart. The Jin C anon confirms this
interpretation in a passage that states: Taoist texts consider the heart to be the Spirit Tower.
This point is located below the Heart AEP.

LJ In Daoism, ling tai is a term that refers to the heart. Mencius recounts the tale of how the
multitudes flocked to King Wan as is they were his children, and built his ling tai spiritual
tower in one day. This is a prime example of the efficaciousness of the sage. The people
rejoiced to do this work because the sage, like the ancients, caused the people to have
pleasure as well as themselves. This tower brings to mind the Daoist folktale of the forlorn
governor who could not see over the trees surrounding his residence. Thus, he built a tower
that would enable him to gain perspective on his kingdom. Hence, GV 10 may be
considered as a point that facilitates perspective and penetrating insight to the heart.

person is ready to let go of past life stuff and move forward. This is the ST 36 on GV.
Use it for strengthening the heart and mind.
With this point were looking at the heart, heart protector and lung disorders.
This point can bring a feeling of unity. It can help the patient gain perspective. Its good
if a person is confused because it helps them see what needs to be done.
Dont do this point too early. It can be the icing on the cake. Dont be afraid of it, just
be cautious. Dont do it on someone whos out to lunch.

GV 11 is located between the two Heart AEPs. The heart can be treated through
this point. Because the heart stores the spirit, GV 11 can be said to be a path to the
spirit or a spirit path.

LJ One may become addicted to the insight afforded by peak states of awareness. If one
does not come down off the mountain (see GV 10) and make use of ones
knowledge in the world, then of what use is the wisdom acquired there? The shock of
divorce, loss of a loved one, or even receiving a terminal diagnosis may shake up ones
view of reality in a way that provides a glimpse of original nature. This glimpse
occasionally seems to produce a high, or a manic reaction. This reaction may be
characterized by the momentary experience of an all-empowering vision of the
significance and interrelationships of the events in ones life. This vision may be
experienced in a way that was previously hidden by ones erroneous interpretation of
reality. Generally, the patient experiencing this vision appears inappropriately happy,
given the seriousness of the event, in a way that might be interpreted as denial. I have
often used this point with GV 10 for quieting the heart and sedating tendencies
toward mania.

Sometimes you can see the state of the body pillar by the way someone holds

Use is acute illness, upper respiratory invasion of cold and wind. Sedate this
point if there is an acute attack.

this point. Its good for articulation of the head. Use when a yang deficiency

This point is used to treat wind disorders, internal or external. It is also a point at
which wind enters the body.

This is a fantastic point. Use when you feel youre continually trying to access
the GV energy and mobilize it but cant. The person is crumbling, deflating and
gets periods of depression and cant keep going. They cant see their moving on
or theyre getting better and they need a degree of connection and/or vision.
Trust is the important issue with this point. The patient may feel vulnerable, as if
they always have their backs to the wall.
Wind is the spearhead of disease and change. Something about the nature of the
wind enables things to change and grow.
Sometimes use it with GV 24 to make it a total transition in the patient. It takes
them to a higher plane and really changes them.
Tonify this point to clear the mind and spirit.
Sedate this point if the person is manic, epileptic, or hysterical.
Points at the back of the occiput have an effect on the eyes.

The person may present as manic. 99% of the time you would sedate these
points in this situation. Imagine taking the officials to the heavenly masters so that
they can all talk to each other. The heavenly ancestors have heard it all before;
they let the officials get their grievances off of their chests and then things calm
down and the officials go home relaxed.
Chaos is different from hyper pulses. Chaos can exist if the pulses are 1 or 2.
If there is chaos, then still sedate these points even if the pulses are low.
Its good to tonify these points too--after an HW for example. Also tonify if
youve done a lot of work on someone to help bring it all together.

LJ This point summons all of ones spiritual resources in restoring the order of heavens
mandate to ones inner kingdom of being. In convening the hundred demons on top
of Mount Mao, [the emperor] Yu is able to bring spiritual unity to ancient China.
Oppose-the-Wind is not a loyal subject but a rebellious energy, one who will, like
the stellar winds prevent the communication that is to occur during the ritual. In
the microcosm of the body, the acupuncture point GV 10, located on the vertex of
the head, is named One Hundred Meetings. The Daoist text the Dao nong (hidden
Dao) states that the head is the meeting point of the hundred spirits. GV 20, then,
is the place on top of the head (mount Mao) where the 100 spirits meet. The
traditional function of GV 20 in draining wind from the head is implied in the
beheading of Oppose-the-Wind, the influence that threatens the integrity of the
kingdom by opposing Yus rule. For it is Yu who establishes harmony by controlling
the rising waters of chaos.

GV 20 One Hundred Meetings

Wind is Chinese medicine is seen as any sign or symptom in an individual that
changes location and severity quickly. Its general presentation is that of chaos, and is
exemplified by muscle spasms, seizures, violent outbursts of anger, or headaches. The
point GV 20 can help center on the most basic level, restore control, and marshal
the patients resources to quell the chaos.

Governor Vessel 20 is the point that aligns us with the polestar to which all the
lesser stars do homage and it is Yus virtue in being a man after heavens heart that
allows him to gain control of the kingdom. It is his power of intention in visualizing
the spirits that allows him to summon and transform them into one body, an
assembly(hui) of all under heaven.

If the pulse of both hands have collapsed and the patient evidences the qi-wild
pattern described [all pulse positions evidence a superficial pounding. . . there is no
depth to the entire pulse, indicating that the pounding that is felt is the dispersion of
the patients final store of yang-qi. . . yin and yang are at their final point of
separation. At this point, with the true yin exhausted, the patients yang energy floats
to the top of the pulse. Now one is truly knocking at the door of death.] then a
different therapeutic strategy (than an H/W) must be chosen. In such a case, the yin
of the whole being must be tonified in order to root that yang. CV 1, named
Meeting of Yin, represents the source of yin in the human being. GV 20, Hundred
Meetings, is the gathering point of the yang-qi. Together, these two points represent
the central axis of heaven and earth as it occurs in the human being. Treating them
together can help restore balance of the primordial yin and yang and provide access
to a reserve of this energy.

GV 20 has the essence of wood and perspective on what life is about as an
individual and as a whole for humankind. It moves the person forward to a
different level of understanding and being. It really pulls things together. You
have to access to ancestors with wisdom and knowledge. You can incarnate the
wisdom and essence at this point.
This point clears the mind and lifts the spirit.
Tonify this point when a person is fragmented but not in an acute state of
weakness and depletion. This point can pull everything together and then you
can go and do regular command points.
You might also tonify it when there is a prolapse at the yin pole, i.e., its the
point opposite CV1. Its good for prolapsed hemorrhoids so you can do local
and distal points.
When there is an excess of yang with aggressive qualities of berserk behavior
then sedate this point.
You can use GV 20 and 21 together.
JG: This is a vantage point for far and wise. It brings awareness of what life is all
about and puts everything in its place. All ancestral wisdom resides here. Its
good for times when a predicament is such that you want to allow the patient to
be surrounded and supported by this wisdom and big picture perspective.
