a two-day expo celebrat-
ing writing, storytelling,
and creativity. Special
events are taking place at
the library in Estes Park
this Thursday, Oct. 23
and Friday, Oct. 24.
Authors will be on hand
to meet book enthusiasts,
perform dramatic read-
ings, and share writing
insights. No registration

David Samuels. As director
of percussion studies for
the University of Colorado,
Dr. Walter teaches under-
graduate through doctoral
students from around the
world and directs the
marimba, Latin jazz and
percussion ensembles.
Jacob Herold grew up in
Colorado, taking up musi-
cal study at age ten. Herold
began professional free-
lance work, played with the
Telluride Jazz Celebration
All-Stars, and earned the
Stevenson Scholarship
Award from the Pikes Peak
Jazz and Swing Society. In
2003, he attended the Berk-
lee College of Music,
where he was recognized
by the Young Arts program
of the National Foundation
for Advancement in the
Arts, and studied with
George Garzone and Dave
Samuels. Herold teaches at
the Colorado Springs Con-
servatory and holds resi-
dency at the Alliance for
Technology, Learning, and
Society. This is Herolds
final semester at CU, after
which he will remain in
Colorado: performing,
teaching, and supporting
local farmers.
Flamenco guitarist Steve
Mullins is an accomplished
composer, multi-instrumen-
talist and ethnomusicolo-
gist. He is on the faculty of
the college of music at the
University of Colorado,
where he earned his doc-
torate in Ethnomusicology.
His doctoral dissertation is
entitled Flamenco Ges-
tures: Musical Meaning in
Motion, dealing with aes-
thetics in Spanish flamen-
co. His compositions have
been heard in settings as
diverse as television com-
mercials, documentaries,
national public radio, silent
movies, multi-media fla-
menco shows, and dancing
horse performances at the
National Western stock
show. He has performed
with the Colorado Music
Festival orchestra, the
Boulder Philharmonic, the
Longmont Symphony, Den-
ver Brass and the Boulder
Mahler Festival Orchestra.

advance registration is

On Friday afternoon,
Oct. 24, from 1 to 5 p.m.,
attendees will have the
chance to meet authors
and to enjoy a series of pan-
el discussions. The book
expo will be open all that
afternoon on the main floor
of the library, while a sepa-
rate meeting room will host
the panel discussions. At 2
p.m., authors will share
ideas and answer questions
at a 50-minute program
titled Scaring up Success:
Getting Your Horror Novel
Published. At 3 pm,
authors will offer a general
idea session for all aspiring
writers, be they writing in
the horror genre or not.
The 3 pm session is titled
Chasing the Vision: Strate-
gies for Writing your First
Novel.
All sessions are free and
open to the public.
Participants are encour-
aged to attend a special
presentation at 4 pm that
same day with award-win-
ning author Lisa Morton
on her book, Trick or
Treat: a History of Hallow-
een. An aficionado herself
of the holiday that has
become a worldwide phe-
nomenon, Morton will give
a panorama history of Hal-
loween and the customs,
traditions and legends that
shaped it over centuries,
spanning from Britains
Guy Fawkes Day to Mexi-
cos Day of the Dead. She
also gives insights into the
tremendous influence of
popular culture on Hallow-
een in books, movies and
television.
These special events are

he sign said, Buy
..overalls, we
wear like a pigs
nose. I thought,
Wow, thats a tough pair of
overalls, and that sign really
says so. Then I wondered
how many of us would even
think about a pigs nose
being tough. Im nearly cer-
tain than some folks, espe-
cially those under the age of
40 or so would say eeeuuu-
wwww, thats just gross.
I doubt that many of us
here in Estes Park have ever
seen a pig searching for food
in a field or watched a sound-
er of hogs rooting through
roots, rocks, dirt, brambles
etc. to find acorns, corn cobs
that were missed in the har-
vest, or apples that have fall-
en off a tree. If youve ever
seen it, youd know how
tough a pigs nose is, yet it is
still sensitive enough to find
food in all of that. Much less
an expensive treat such as a
truffle.
We were at Silver Dollar
City in Branson Mo. listen-
ing to some great music and
watching arts and crafts ven-
dors using vintage tools and
hand making all sorts of
things when I saw the sign.
Other than the lookers on,
there wasnt a cell phone or
a computer involved in any
of it. There were rug hook-
ers, carvers, a huge wooden
drive wheel turned by a
man, powering a lathe and a
mule turning a sugar cane
processor. There were forg-
es, knife makers, rope twist-
ers, leather craftsmen, toy
makers, on and on and on.
It made me think about
things, jobs that arent
around anymore, other than
at such a gathering.
Broom makers for exam-
ple. With vacuum cleaners
that drive around by them-
selves, mops that dont even
need to be wrung out, and
plastic broomstraw, I doubt
that there are many broom
makers out there still mak-
ing brooms by hand.
How about threshing
crews? I wonder if there are
any threshing machines, in
working order, on any farms
in Colorado, other than in a
collection of antique machin-
ery.
I wonder if there are many
of us who know how to tie a
bundle of oats and stand
them in a shock. With Hal-
loween on the horizon well
be seeing a lot of advertise-
ments with a pumpkin,
carved as a jack o lantern,
sitting under shocks of oats
that are waiting to be run
through the threshing
machine.
If one of the bundles got
laid on the feed belt back-
wards, it could and often did,
shut down the machine. Boy,
when that happened, the
threshing machine operator
would get pretty mad,
because they had to crawl
into it to clear the fans, shak-
ers and grinders. But the
remain-der of the crew got a
break. Im sure it happened
on purpose occasionally.
Even pitching bundles on
the wagon had to be precise.
You placed them all with the
heads the same direction,
just to prevent their being
fed the wrong way.

About the Project
Western owns, operates, and maintains two 115 kilovolt (kV) single-circuit transmission lines that connect approximately from the Estes Park Substation to the Flatiron Substation
in Larimer County, Colorado. These wood pole transmission lines were constructed in 1938 and 1953 and have operated beyond their expected lifespans. Western is proposing to
rebuild the existing 115-kV system between Flatiron Substation and the intersection of Mall Road and U.S. Highway 36 in Estes Park. The proposed project would remove the two
existing 115-kV single-circuit transmission lines and replace them with: 1) a new double-circuit 115-kV transmission line on steel monopoles within a single right-of-way (ROW);
or 2) a new double-circuit 115-kV transmission line on steel monopoles within a single ROW with the western portion buried in concrete cable trenches for about 2.6 miles; or 3)
rebuild both lines as single-circuit transmission lines on wood-pole H-frame structures on separate ROWs. The proposed project would improve access to the transmission lines,
widen the ROWs where existing ROW is inadequate, and implement an integrated vegetation management approach within the ROWs to ensure electrical clearance, reliability, and
safety requirements are met and maintained. Western is the lead Federal agency for the EIS. The U.S. Forest Service has jurisdiction over National Forest System lands crossed
by the transmission lines, and is a cooperating agency for the EIS.

Project Draft Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) on September 19, 2014. The Draft EIS evaluates the potential environmental impacts

Christmas is cele-
brating its 30th
year of helping
low income families with
children. We are gearing
up for the 2014 program.
Because of the flood,
last year was a record year
for us with 135 families on
our program, said a Bright
Christmas spokesperson.
We were so fortunate that
the donations allowed us to
help all of these families by
providing food and special
needs. Most of the families
were adopted by other
families, businesses,
churches, clubs and indi-
viduals for Christmas gifts.
We also sent many of the
children to Plum Creek
Shoe Station for new
shoes. Randy and Peter
Martin generously meet
our budget and fit the chil-
dren.
In the summer we pur-
chased school supplies for
just under 100 returning
school children. We are
always on call with the
schools for needs for the
children. The counselors
are great at assessing
needs such as coats and
snow boots.
Families who would like
help in giving their family a
great Christmas, can sign
up for the Bright Christ-
mas Program at Cross-
roads Ministry on Wednes-
days, Oct. 29 through Nov.
19 between 1 and 4 p.m., or
on Saturdays, Nov. 1
through Nov. 22, between
10 a.m. and 1 p.m. You do
