Boiler

The boiler is corner fired using residual fuel oil and is an NEI - ICL design. The boiler in its
current state has 16 tilting burners (four per corner) and will comprise a single furnace
compartment with a main and a rear gas pass, 2-bank feed water economiser, six horizontal
superheater stages, and a single stage reheater. Water circulation through the furnace wall
tubes will be assisted by electrically driven circulating pumps (constant speed)

Turbine

The G.E.C. Turbine Generators designed turbine generator is a three cylinder
impulse/reaction type driven by superheated steam from the boiler. The turbine will be
directly coupled to the generator capable of generating 300 MW of electrical power at 17
kilovolts.

The HP Turbine cylinder is a double shell design, comprising an inner and outer casing, each
divided and bolted at its horizontal line joint. Each casing is cast separately in Cr-Mo-V
steel. The HP Rotor is machined from a Cr-Mo-V steel forging with nine blade disc formed
integral with the rotor and will be bolted to the IP rotor shaft through a rigid coupling.

The IP turbine consists of an outer casing enclosing the rotor. The first five of eleven stages
of rotor blading are enclosed in an inner casing supported in the outer casing. The CR-Mo-V
inner and outer casings are flanged along their horizontal centre lines to allow for bolting
together. The IP turbine rotor is forged in Cr-Mo-V steel with eleven discs formed integral
with the shaft.

The LP turbine cylinder comprises an inner casing, each split on the horizontal line. The
bottom half of the outer casing forming the exhaust chamber to the condenser. The LP rotor

Balance of Plant

The results of the DMD investigations during the numerous site visits, and discussions with
various equipment suppliers into the possible erection of one of the spare units in a new
location the extent of the balance of plant required to erect a unit was determined.
The following list identifies the balance of plant required to be procured in addition to the
Existing components in order to complete a functioning coal fired generating unit. .

The Unit uses steam auxiliary boilers to supply needs such as fuel oil atomisation, soot
blowing, heat tracing fuel oil lines and fuel oil tank heating. The steam air pre-heater is
presently supplied with approximately 20,000 pounds per hour of steam from the #5

feedwater heater. Auxiliary steam is taken from the reheat steam lines when operating on
coal firing.

Only one 300MW Unit is for sale and in addition the scope of the purchase from AES does
not include fuel storage facilities, stack, gas clean up equipment, boiler support steel, cooling
water system, switchgear, valves, economiser pipework, Instrumentation and Control
Equipment, Water Treatment plant, lifting gear and exciter. Within the package limits,
however, the equipment is complete with missing items noted in this report.
The owner has extensive documentation on the plant design, and has stated that he will make
it all available to the buyer subject to clearance from the OEMs. The hard copies of the
engineering drawings are backed up on microfilm. With two units currently operating there
is every reason to believe that all of the necessary documentation for a retro-design and
timely installation are available.
Plant Inspection

DMD attended site and carried out a detailed plant inspection on various dates during March
2008.

The equipment is located at the power station site.
The inspection revealed that most plant items were still in the original manufactures packing
cases example (Figure 2). These may have to be re-boxed after inspection and prior to
shipping to site or for refurbishment if required. Larger components were stored on wooden
supports to protect machined surfaces for example LP turbine outer casings (Figure 3) etc.
All boiler panels are well stacked and supported. All boiler tubing, panels headers etc are all
sealed with plastic covers held in place with Denso tape (Figure 4). All boiler parts appear
to be fairly clearly marked, example (Figure 5).
All of the equipment that would appear to require dry storage is being stored either in the
main plant building or other storage sheds on site. A number of the large items such as the
steam drum (Figure 6), ducting (Figure 7), fan covers (Figure 8), support steel, low-pressure
steam piping (Figure 9) condenser water boxes (Figure 10) and LP Heaters (Figure 11) are
located in open storage. Although the ducting has been stored outside for many years it has
been retained in fairly good condition as a result of a long term contract with the original
supplier to keep it painted and corrosion free. This contract was only suspended a few years
ago. One item of plant that has suffered significant damage with storage outside is the air

heater hoods. While the basic structure of the hoods is sound the spring loaded rear shoes
and sealing ring (Figure 12) has suffered severe corrosion damage on all hoods.
All the HP, IP and LP inner turbine casings, valve steam chests and rotors are stored in the
turbine house building. Figures 13, 14 and 15 show one of the HP turbine outer casing top
halves, the valve steam chests and the LP rotor.
