Parents concerned over lack
of LRHSD midterms, finals. PAGE 2
SKIP HARRIS/Special to The Sun
The Seneca girls cross country team breaks out of the box in an Olympic Conference batch meet held at Gloucester County College.
The season is winding down for the Golden Eagles, as the Olympic Conference Championships will be held Friday, Oct. 24 on the cam-
pus of GCC.
And theyre off!
By NICK COHEN
The Sun
The Seneca Golden Eagles
Band is marching into its 10th
year under band director Keith
Styers with its largest member-
ship yet. For Styers, that has been
the goal since his first day at
Seneca.
My focus and vision have al-
ways been that it is more impor-
tant to have more students in-
volved in the band, not the compe-
tition aspect, Styers said. We
have different priorities and that
is to ensure the kids have a great
experience, the opportunity to
learn and be a part of something.
Its about the journey, not the end
result.
True to Styers vision, Seneca
hosted its 11th annual USBands
competition on Saturday, Sept. 27

Some students in the Lenape
Regional High School District
may be happy they wont have to
take midterms and finals this
school year, but some parents are
not too happy with the decision.
A group of parents from
Lenape High School attended last
weeks board of education meet-
ing to express their concern for
the lack of midterms and finals at
the schools this year.
Speaking on behalf of the
group, Christine Dickson said she
believed the lack of exams would
negatively impact students when
they head off to college.
It helps them develop a skill
set for college, Dickson said.
Another parent, Leigh Ann Er-
langer, said not holding exams
was going to set students back in
their college preparation.
I think wed be doing our stu-
dents a disservice otherwise, she
said.
The district has undergone a
large revision of its curriculum
in recent years. As part of the
changes, the district has looked at
changing the way it approaches
assessments. Dickson said she
and other parents received an
email in May detailing the
change.
Dickson felt the changes could
have been better communicated
with parents. She received the
email on May 23 on the Friday
prior to Memorial Day.
Communicating this subject
in this manner is not optimal,
Dickson said.
Superintendent Carol Birn-
bohm said the district is in a plan-
ning year and plans to unveil new
assessments for next year.
The new assessments will align
with changes made in the dis-
tricts curriculum over the past
five to six years. Birnbohm said
the old assessments were still
being used up until last year and
didnt align with what the stu-
dents were learning. She said the
new assessments will be better
aligned to the new curriculum.
The focus of the curriculum re-
volves around problem solving,
critical thinking and applying the
learning material to real life ap-
plications.
Kids are going to have to pre-
pare for this and have to be re-

Lenape District Television is
looking for Lenape District alum-
ni who are interested in sharing
memories from their days in high
school and provide updates on
what they've been doing since
graduation to be on the alumni
interview show, Where Are They
Now?
The program features gradu-
ates of Lenape, Shawnee and
Cherokee high schools, Seneca
High School is still too young,
who have attained a special level
of recognition within their ca-
reer field.
LDTV is looking for alumni
from the class of 2004 and all pre-
vious years from Lenape,
Shawnee and Cherokee. Nomina-
tions are welcome from class-
mates, parents and teachers. In
addition to individual interviews,
LDTV welcomes group inter-
views of spouses who graduated
from district schools, siblings
who have unique careers, and
even inter-generational inter-
views of families a parent and
child, each of whom graduated
from one of the districts schools.
LDTV is also able to conduct re-
mote interviews via Skype video.
LDTV is constantly in search
of alumni whose success and con-
tributions to society after gradua-
tion will not only honor its gradu-
ates, but will also motivate cur-
rent students by demonstrating
the results of the quality educa-
tion delivered in the districts
schools.

as well as schools from Hammonton, Pit-
man and Williamstown.
Since we hosted the competition, its an
exhibition, and we dont place. The compe-
tition raised money for our program, Sty-
ers said. We dont have the biggest compe-
tition, and were fine with that, but it does
give the kids an opportunity to see what
were doing in comparison to other bands.
According to the USBands rulebook, US-
Bands uses a classification system based on
group and class designations to make sure
bands of similar size, style and experience
are grouped together to compete. A tier-
based system is utilized where each compet-
itive class is judged on a separate scale that
reflects the expected level of proficiency.
Class A bands are judged on a scale
with fundamental to intermediate skills,
bands classified as Open are judged
based on intermediate to advanced skills.
Groups are based on the number of per-
formers. Lenape Regional High School Dis-
trict schools do not compete in the same
group due to varying sizes of the bands. Of
the schools, Cherokee has traditionally
been the largest and placed into 5A.
Shawnee is considered to be more experi-
enced, but smaller in size and competes at
4 Open. Lenape competes at 2 Open, and for
the first time in the schools history Seneca
will compete at the 5A level.
The Golden Eagles practice and compete
in a similar fashion to sports teams, but
Styers attempts to schedule practices and
events to allow students to be a part of
other clubs.
We practice two days a week in the
evening, and then again Fridays before
football games and again Saturdays before
competitions, Styers said. A lot of our
students have jobs or want to participate in
other clubs so Ive always tried to make our
schedule flexible to that.
Styers credits the band reaching its
highest level of members, more than 100,
to two things.
We have tremendous support from our
administration. Principal Spektor and
Bradley Bauer, the assistant principal, are
very supportive of our program and our
goals for the program. We also have a great
parent association that supports our
events, Styers said. In addition to that,
we have very little attrition, rarely does the
program lose kids year to year.

ELECTION LETTERS
Letters to the editor regarding the
Nov. 4 election will not be printed in the
Oct. 29 edition. The Oct. 22 edition will be
the last edition before elections to print
these letters.
G
hosts, goblins, ghouls and a lot
of superheroes, princesses,
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles
and characters from Frozen will be
parading up and down streets in town
in one short week. Halloween is an ex-
citing time for kids, parents and neigh-
bors alike.
Its a time for fun, a time for laugh-
ter, a time for adorable pictures, a time
for candy, a time for celebration and a
time when we all need to pay attention
to safety.
First and foremost, motorists need
to be extra cautious when driving
through the streets that day, not just in
your own neighborhood, but sur-
rounding ones, as well. Make sure to
be aware of trick-or-treating hours,
and be especially careful when dark-
ness settles in. Be especially alert in
residential neighborhoods, as kids
tend to run excitedly from house to
house.
Parents should be on high alert that
day as well, reminding their kids to
look both ways before crossing the
street and cross only at intersections
and crosswalks, when possible.
If kids are trick-or-treating without
adult supervision, make sure they
know the route so they dont get lost
and confused. Other safety tips, cour-
tesy of the website, www.safekids.org:
Decorate costumes and bags with
reflective tape or stickers and, if possi-
ble, choose light colors.
Choose face paint and makeup
whenever possible instead of masks,
which can obstruct a childs vision.
Have kids carry glow sticks or
flashlights to help them see and be
seen by drivers.
When selecting a costume, make
sure it is the right size to prevent trips
and falls.
If you need more tips or tricks of
the trade for trick-or-treating, visit
www.safekids.org. The local police de-
partment will have safety recommen-
dations, and the municipality will also
have more information about specific
rules and regulations for the day.
Be safe this Halloween. And most
importantly, have a scary good time!
in our opinion
Safety first this Halloween
Parents, kids, homeowners and motorists should follow these tips
Halloween photos
While youre out trick-or-treating this
Halloween, or attending a local
Halloween parade, dont forget about

you enjoying the holiday. Send them to

sponsible for what they learn,
Birnbohm said.
Another problem the district
had in the past was inconsistency
between teachers and schools.
The goal with the curriculum
changes is to establish long-term
learning goals so students across
all four high schools are learning
the same material in their respec-
tive classes.
The lack of midterms and fi-
nals this year coincides with the
start of PARCC testing this year.
Dickson felt the change was done
to accommodate PARCC. She said
the standardized test shouldnt be
a substitute for midterms and fi-
nals.
To compare PARCC to
midterms and finals is like com-
paring apples to oranges, Dick-
son said.
Birnbohm said midterms and
finals were not taken off the cal-
endar because of PARCC.
PARCC wasnt the impetus for
the elimination of midterms and
finals, Birnbohm said.
Birnbohm said the district will
communicate further changes as
more details are determined later
this year. She also invited parents
to call the district administration
building with any questions
about the changes.
