Marikina Stake hosts Family History Exhibit

By Vianne Ilagan

As part of its lineup of activities for the National Family Week, and in line with its commitment to
facilitate Marikeos seeking to learn more about their heritage, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day
Saints Marikina Stake staged a Family History Exhibit last September 23 and 24 at the lobby of the
Marikina City Hall.

The exhibit opened with a ribbon-cutting ceremony in the morning of September 23, which was
attended by some church members, the public and Marikina City Vice Mayor Dr. Jose Fabian Cadiz, who
delivered his remarks following the welcome message of Marikina Stake President Jose G. Manarin.

The activity was also graced by the Marikina Stake Choir, which rendered special song numbers during
the ceremony.

Following the ribbon-cutting, the event was officially opened to the public.

Four laptops manned by Family History consultants were set up in the venue to help the visitors search
for their roots and ancestors through FamilySearch.org.

Several Stake members also volunteered and offered their time and resources in setting up the exhibit,
giving out flyers, teaching visitors how to register to FamilySearch.org and gather information about
their ancestors.

According to Stake Family History Director Dick Micairan, around 200 individuals were able to register to
the website by the end of the two-day activity.

The exhibit raised public awareness and interest on the importance of doing genealogy work. Through
this activity, more people got fascinated by the fact that they could actually search for their ancestors
online through the billions of digital images and indices of records that the Church makes available
through FamilySearch.org.

The activity also served as a stepping stone for many Marikina Stake members who were previously
unaware of such church-provided Family History resources to start searching for their ancestors and
gathering information about them so they can perform temple ordinances on their behalf.

Today, more and more members of the Marikina Stake are becoming more actively engaged in Family
History work and are taking part in the FamilySearchPH Challenge, wherein every member is
challenged to print a Family Ordinance Request and be qualified as a submitter. The target of the
Stake is to have at least 160 submitters by the end of 2015.
