Grade 11 TOK Presentation

This quarter you, together with a partner, will be doing a 5 minutes' presentation which you will be filming
on language as a Way of Knowing (WoK).

This video will be a summative assessment and will be very important in determining your quarter 1 grade.
You will be assessed on the criteria underneath.

This will be your first presentation and your first ToK assessment, thus just do it the best you can.

What do you need to do?
1. Your Knowledge Issue (see underneath for the ToK syllabus explanation) will be: "To what extent does
language allow us to know?" You will need to find a Real Life Situation from a newspaper article, a
website, a book, a poem or whatever else that may be appropriate (consult your teacher) that address
the Knowledge Issue.
2. Then it is time to take your shot of BULVJ, in other terms how does bias, uncertainty, limitations,
verification and justification hinder or enhance our knowing through language pertaining to your
specific Real Life Situation?
3. After that you link the WoK language to at least one Linking Concept (LC) -and if you are a risk-taker
also to one Area of Knowledge (AoK).
4. As a conclusion you answer the Knowledge Issue
As a warm-up let's look at the newspaper article underneath and try to grasp the essence.

Knowledge issues
Knowledge issues are questions that directly refer to our understanding of the world, ourselves
and others, in connection with the acquisition, search for, production, shaping and acceptance
of knowledge. These issues are intended to open to inquiry and exploration not only problems
but also strengths of knowledge. Students sometimes overlook the positive value of different
kinds of knowledge, and the discriminatory power of methods used to search for knowledge,
to question it, and to establish its validity. Knowledge issues can reveal how knowledge can be
a benefit, a gift, a pleasure and a basis for further thought and action, just as they can
uncover the possible uncertainties, biases in approach, or limitations relating to knowledge,
ways of knowing, and the methods of verification and justification appropriate in different
areas of knowledge.
