What Is Sound Recording?

Definition
So, what is sound recording? Well, in simple terms, Sound recording is re-creation of sound
waves. The sound we hear around us is due to compression and rarefaction of the air, it is often
necessary to convert these sound waves into electric forms so as to perform any modifications. The
electrical or mechanical capturing of sound waves like spoken voice, singing, instrumental music or other
sound effects gives a meaning of sound recording.
Process
Moving ahead with an explanation of sound recording, there are two main technologies of sound
recording - analog recording and digital recording. Analog sound recording is done with the help of a
small microphone diaphragm that senses any changes in atmospheric pressure and records them
graphically, representing the sound waves on a medium such as a phonograph. While in magnetic sound
recording, the microphone diaphragm vibrates due to the sound waves which are then converted into a
varying electric current, which further altered to a varying magnetic field by an electromagnet.
Thus the sound recorded is represented as magnetized areas on a plastic tape with a magnetic coating
on it. Electronically produced sound waves may also be recorded straight from devices such as an
electric guitar pickup or a synthesizer. There is no need for the use of acoustics here in the sound
recording process. Only the musicians need to hear how good they are playing during sound recording
sessions.
In the digital sound recording, the analog sound signals are picked up by the microphone and are
converted to digital form by a process of digitization. This allows it to be stored and transmitted by a wider
variety of media. Digital sound recording stores audio signals as a series of binary numbers, which
represent the amplitude of the audio signal at equal time intervals. The sample rate is so fast that the
human ears pick out the result as a continuous sound.
Conclusion
The digital sound recordings are considered of a superior quality than analog recordings as this
format prevent any loss of quality which is found in the analog sound recording due to noise and
electromagnetic interference in playback as well as mechanical corrosion or damage to the storage
medium. However, the digital audio signal must be reconverted to analog form during playback before
applying to a loudspeaker or earphones.
We are sure that the sound recording explained in the above article would have helped you become well
familiar with the subject.
