CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION
A. Background Of The Study
English is international language. English is the most commonly used
language among foreign language speakers. In addition, English is considered
as the universal language for international communication, science, business,
entertainment, tourism and technology.
English has four skills which have to be mastered by students. They
are listening, speaking, reading and writing. Learning language without
speaking is nothing. Sometimes, students have good ability in writing, but less
in speaking. Students often have no confidence to speak because they must
think about grammar, pronunciation, and etc.
Students are taught not only about text, but also they are taught how to
use English actively. They need to express their ideas, feelings, opinions or
other orally. The writer thinks that teaching speaking in Indonesia is rather
difficult for teacher because students usually use their mother tongue in daily
activity. or that reason, teacher should give a great attention to the students to
learn speaking because speaking is the most important aspect in studying
foreign language.
!armer "#$$%&'#() stated that there are three main reasons for getting
students to speak in the classroom. irstly, speaking activities provide
rehearsal opportunities to practise real life speaking in the safety of the
classroom. Secondly, speaking tasks in which students try to use any or all of
the languages, they know provide feedback for both teacher and students.
inally, more students have opportunities to activate various elements of
language they have stored in their brains, the more automatic their use of these
elements become. *s a result, students gradually become autonomous
language users. This means that they will be able to use words and phrases
fluently without very much conscious thought.
To teach speaking, a teacher has to be able to make the students
excited and en+oy the teaching learning process. To support the success of
teaching learning process, ,ualified teachers, good environments, facilities and
media are the main factors to reali-e the success of the process. In this case, a
good English teacher must be creative in selecting some media of teaching a
foreign language. .ithout media which is appropriate to the students level,
they can feel bored and not interested in +oining the lesson.
In my preliminery research to the students that i taught in //L at
islamic senior high school 0oto 0ecil Tan+ung 1aya. Some of students would
not to speak English when they are asked to perform the conversation in front
of the class. .hen i asked them why they would not to perform the
conversation2 The asnwers i got that they were afraid in making mistake. They
were unconfident to speak. It was coused by their motivation. Their anxiety
was bigger than their motivation. *s the result, their motivation to speak was
very low. It is believed that their anxiety came because they did not master
components in speaking.
To investigate the factors that made them have low motivation in
English, the resercher did interview to the students deeply. rom the students
responses the writer can conclude that students are afraid of making mistakes.
They are unconfidents to speak english because of factor are related to
components in speaking. They are pronunciation, vocabulary, grammar,
fluency and comprehension.
The factors seem when they performed in conversation, they
pronounciation is poor, many of words they said like in their native language
is indonesian language. This is very important bcause the sounds of
indonesian language and English are very different. Then they still lack of
vocabulary, vocabulary are important for the speaker to share their ideas, if
they lack in vocabulary they difficult to deliver their message to their
audience. Then they did not master in grammar. It is cuased the students could
not create a good sentence. The last, fluency of students in speaking is unwell.
The speak with slow, snatches, and sometime +ust silence. That is all make
students unconfident in speaking English.
Encounter that problems teacher should find the strategy or techni,ue
that make students involved and take a part in classroom particularly in
speaking procesess. The techni,ue makes they confident and en+oy in learning
but also improve their ability in speaking.
3ame is an alternative choice of media in teaching learning process
which makes students en+oy and interested in learning speaking. They will not
be afraid to speak because they +ust try to win the game without thinking about
grammar or pronunciation. !ot Seat game is a game which makes students
speak in the classroom by guessing the word in the blackboard for a student
who sits on the !ot Seat and the other members try to describe the word by
giving clues or characteristics of the word.
!ot Seat game is one of the games that forces students to speak a lot.
!ot Seat game gives a chance to students to describe something generally. The
students will en+oy the class activity and they learn with fun by playing !ot
Seat. or teacher, it will make teaching learning process become easier
because the students will understand teacher4s explanation easily. This game
can be an alternative media in teaching spoken report text. That is why the
writer chose !ot Seatgame to teach spoken report text.
1eport text is one of genre texts that have to be mastered by the
eleventh grade students of Senior !igh School. There are two cycles in
teaching report text5 written and spoken cycle. The writer focused on spoken
cycle. In spoken cycle, the students must be able to describe the way things
are, with reference to a range of natural, man6made and social phenomena in
our environment orally.
The writer concluded that !ot Seat game is one of the learning games
which is very suitable applied in improving students7 ability in spoken report
text especially for Senior !igh School students. In addition, playing !ot Seat
game can motivate students to learn more speaking skill.
1eferring to the statements above, the writer took the title The Effect
of Playing Hotseat Game Towards Students Speaking Ability at Class ! of
!slamic Senior High School "#A$% &oto kaciak Tan'uang (aya
B. Identification of the problem
8ased on the background above, many reasons that suport students
could not sepak English. irstly, students not have sufficient vocabulary. In
speaking, vocabulary is a main point for the speaker to share thier ideas, if
they still lack of vocabulary they would not deliver what they intended
properly. Second, the students pronounciation is poor. 3ood pronounciation
will make the message receive by the audience clearly. *nd also for the
grammar, fluency and comprehension. That is all problem make students have
low motivation to speak English.
So, here are the teacher role, Teachers should be able to create or
choose a techni,ue or use media which is good for the students. In this study,
the writer has chosen the topic playing !ot Seat game to improve students7
ability in spoken report text for the following reasons&
1. !ot Seatgame can make students en+oy to speak without thinking what
they said is correct or grammatically incorrect but improved their
vocabulary. If their vocabuary is good. It will make improving in their
speaking5 grammar, fluency and comprehension.
2. !ot Seatgame is used in this final pro+ect because students like game.
3ame also makes students en+oy in the classroom5 they will not get bored
in the class.
3. !ot Seatgame can make students speak more.
4. 1eport text is one of genres that must be mastered by the eleventh grade
students of Senior !igh School.
C. Limitation 9f The Study
:onsidering students7 problems in learning English especially in speaking
process that have been mentioned in background and identification of the
problems above, the researcher needed to limit the problem on the
Effectiveness of ;umbered !eads Together towards students7 speaking ability
at class <III =unior !igh School ' < 0oto 0ampung >alam /adang /ariaman.

8ased on the identification and limitation of the problem above, the problem

E. /urpose of the study
The purpose of this study are to find out To know wheter or not !otseat game
improve students7 speaking ability.
F. Significant of the study
The result of this study are expected useful for& firstly, The Teachers
!opefully, The teachers may use !ot Seat game as an alternative media to
create good atmosphere during teaching6learning process in the classroom, so
that the students will be interested in +oining the lesson especially in speaking
class. Secondly, The students can find the way to develop their competence in
speaking effectively. 8y reading this study, the reader will get more
information to develop their speaking skill. The .riter !opefully, this study
will lead the writer to be a good teacher.
