Head Start Children partners with ‘Varnish’ specialist

MID-MICHIGAN AREA – Research
shows that bad oral hygiene is directly
related to increased illness, disease, and
poor health. SO … 0-5 Head Start has
teamed with the Mid-Michigan District
Health Department (MMDHD) to pro-
vide a fluoride varnishing experience for
all their young children ages 0-5.
“There is nothing more precious than
a child’s smile”, says Christa Jerome, 0-5
Head Start Health Advocate. “If a child is
in dental pain, they are not able to learn,
socialize or even just play.”
Oral Health Coordinator, Carol Han-
ba, RDH, applies fluoride varnish and
at the same time she performs a dental
screen to assess if a child is potentially in
dental pain or is at a high risk of dental
problems.
520 children across the 0-5 Head Start
four county service area have received
their first application. 0-5 Head Start, a
program of EightCAP, Inc., serves chil-
dren in Gratiot, Isabella, Ionia and Mont-
calm Counties.
Fluoride varnish soaks into teeth like
a sponge, making the teeth more resistant
to dental caries. Many cities have fluoride
in their drinking water, but that is not
the case in many rural areas in these four
counties.
Jerome explains that the long term
effects are very positive. For these chil-
dren it means better oral health and cost
savings for themselves, but also for every
taxpayer. This program means that there
will also be less reimbursement paid out
over each child’s lifetime through Med-
icaid for restorative dental treatment (ie.
dental fillings, stainless steel crowns and
extractions).
“This is the third year 0-5 Head Start
has partnered with MMDHD to apply
fluoride varnish”, explains Jerome. “The
first two years it was funded through a
Varnish! Michigan grant, now it is solely
supported by insurance reimbursement
and EightCAP, Inc. 0-5 Head Start dol-
lars.”
The program insures that all 0-5 Head
Start children ages 3-5, with parent con-
sent, will receive two applications over a
one year period and children ages 0-3 will
receive four applications over a one year
period.
“Through this program we are able to
identify children who are in need of im-
mediate dental care and we can then as-
sist families to overcome any barriers that
they may face”, says Jerome.

Celebrating family holiday traditions

“When a Christmas tree catch-
es fire there are literally only sec-
onds to escape safely,” said Farr.
“Removing a dry tree and subse-
quently the chance for a deadly
fire to occur is easier to live with
than the consequences such as
the loss of your home, or even
worse, family members. A Christ-
mas tree is replaceable - but your
loved ones are not, so don’t take
the risks.”
Each year, more than 200 fires
are caused by Christmas trees
resulting in six deaths, 25 inju-
ries and more than $6 million in
property damage. Farr said shorts
in electrical lights or open flames
from candles, lighters or matches
start tree fires.
The Bureau of Fire Services
asks consumers to follow these
important guidelines for holiday
tree safety:
When purchasing an artificial
tree, look for the label “Fire Re-
sistant.” Although this label does
not mean the tree will not catch
fire, it does indicate the tree will
resist burning and should extin-
guish quickly.

Use family photos from holi-
days past and present to create a
collage you can hang prominent-
ly in your living or family room.

Or simply go traditional and
deck the halls together with old-
fashioned trimmings and a well-
placed family photo or two.
Create A
Holiday Quilt
Traditionally, quilts have
been created for milestones like
the birth of a baby. Why not start
a holiday quilt? Have each family
member add a holiday-themed
panel to one quilt. Get grand-
ma, aunts, mom and the kids
involved. Or create one square
for each holiday during the year
(New Year’s, Easter, Christmas,
etc.). You even can make a photo
quilt where you print family pho-
tos on fabric. For help getting
started, turn to one of the new
books on the subject, such as
“The Quilter’s Catalog: A Com-
prehensive Resource Guide,” by
Meg Cox.
“If the word ‘quilt’ brings to
mind elderly ladies bending over
wooden hoops, try this on for
size: the quilt world has doubled
to 27.7 million quilters. Even
young people are getting inter-
ested, as the modern quilter’s
wish-list is more likely to include
a computer-driven sewing ma-
chine, designer fabric and quilt
software than a handheld hoop,”
says Cox, stressing how kids take
to this activity.
Do Good For
Others
Help decorate a commu-
nity park or public area for the
holidays. Volunteer together
at a soup kitchen or clothing
drive. Have the kids join you to
purchase toys for a toy drive. Or
have them go through their toys
and donate old ones. Get out in
your community and involve the
family in doing good.
Tree Twists
Many families make annual
pilgrimages to choose Christmas
trees and decorate them togeth-
er. Some take it one step further
and venture into their backyards
or the woods to decorate a tree
for the animals, using edible dec-
orations, such as popcorn, cran-
berries, peanut butter-covered
decorations, birdseed and more.
A Virtual
Family Party
If your relatives and friends
are far-flung and can’t gather to-
gether for the holiday, hold a vir-
tual get-together. Choose a time
before the holiday and coordi-
nate a virtual family party where
everyone gets on the family com-
puter and uses a Webcam to join
the fun. Or, simply have each
participant upload new family
photos to a photo-sharing Web
site and view them on the same
night.
Be they old or new, holiday

Protect yourself from identity theft

(StatePoint) Identity theft is
on the rise, as approximately 10
million Americans fell victim last
year. While nothing can guaran-
tee you won’t become a victim
yourself, there are many ways to
minimize risk.
“No matter if you’re shopping,
drawing money from the bank, or
simply taking out your trash, it’s
important to take precautionary
actions,” says Dr. Nelson Ludlow,
CEO of Intellicheck Mobilisa, a
developer of wireless security and
identity systems for the govern-
ment, military and commercial
markets. Ludlow’s Defense ID
System has scanned millions of
IDs, identifying over ten thou-
sand criminals and suspects with
zero false positives.
“Remember, people aren’t al-
ways who they say they are, both
online and in the physical world,”
he adds, noting identity fraud
more often occurs in person than
online.
With this in mind here are
some tips from the experts at In-
tellicheck Mobilisa on safeguard-
ing your identity:
n Protect Your Social Security
Number: Don’t keep your Social
Security card in your wallet or
include your number on checks.
Only provide your number when
absolutely necessary, and ask
to use other identifiers. If your
number appears on your driver’s
license or health insurance card,
ask to substitute another num-
ber.
n Backup Your Wallet: Pho-
tocopy the fronts and backs of
your wallet’s contents, including
driver’s license, credit cards and
insurance cards. You’ll be able to
quickly notify the appropriate in-
stitutions if it gets stolen.
n Safeguard Your Mail and
Trash: Before disposal, always
shred credit card receipts, checks
and bank statements, credit ap-
plications or offers, insurance
forms, doctor statements, expired
charge cards and anything with
personal information.
n Store Personal Information
Securely: This is especially impor-
tant when you are having work
done in your house, if you employ
outside help or have roommates.
n Be On Guard In Public:
Thieves don’t have to steal your
wallet for your identity. Shield
your entry of your PIN when us-
ing the ATM. Watch out for peo-
ple peeking over your shoulder
or using cell phone cameras to
record your actions.
n Stay Vigilant Online: Prac-
tice safe surfing when it comes to
online shopping, banking, email
usage and more. Don’t use public
computers to access personally
sensitive information. For tips
to protect against Internet fraud,
visit the government’s safety site
at OnGuardOnline.gov.
n Choose Better Passwords:
Select tough passwords for bank,
credit card and phone accounts.
Don’t use easily available infor-
mation like your birthday, ad-
dress, phone number or mother’s
maiden name. Combinations of
letters, symbols and numbers cre-
ate the strongest passwords.
“It’s critical we make it diffi-
cult for the wrong people to gain
access to valuable information
that can be used to cause dam-
age,” urges Dr. Ludlow. “There
are many tools in our arsenal to-
day that can help catch danger-
ous suspects. It’s important these
tools are implemented correctly.”
ACROSS THE BACKYARD FENCE
‘Make it’ safe at holiday parties or buffets
A popular way to celebrate holidays or any
party occasion is to invite friends and family to a
buffet. However, this type of food service where
foods are left out for long periods leave the door
open for uninvited guests -- bacteria that cause
foodborne illness. Festive times for giving and
sharing should not include sharing foodborne
illness. Here are some tips from the USDA’s
Meat and Poultry Hotline to help you have a
SAFE holiday party.
Safe Food Handling
Always wash your hands before and after
handling food. Keep your kitchen, dishes and
utensils clean also. Always serve food on clean
plates -- not those previously holding raw meat
and poultry. Otherwise, bacteria, which may
have been present in raw meat juices can cross-
contaminate the food to be served.
Cook Thoroughly
If you are cooking foods ahead of time for
your party; be sure to cook foods thoroughly to
safe minimum internal temperatures.
n Beef, veal and lamb steaks, roasts and
chops may be cooked to 145 degrees Fahrenheit.
n All cuts of pork to 160 degrees Fahrenheit.
n Ground beef, veal and lamb to 160 degrees
Fahrenheit.
n All poultry should reach a safe minimum
internal temperature of 165 degrees Fahrenheit.
Use Shallow Containers
Divide cooked foods into shallow containers
to store in the refrigerator or freezer until serv-
ing. This encourages rapid, even cooling. Re-
heat hot foods to 165 degrees Fahrenheit. Ar-
range and serve food on several small platters
rather than on one large platter. Keep the rest of
the food hot in the oven (set at 200 to 250 degree
Fahrenheit) or cold in the refrigerator until serv-
ing time. This way, foods will be held at a safe
temperature for a longer period of time. RE-
PLACE empty platters rather than adding fresh
food to a dish that already had food in it. Many
people’s hands may have been taking food from
the dish, which has also been sitting out at room
temperature.
The Two-Hour Rule
Foods should not sit at room temperature for
more than two hours. Keep track of how long
foods have been sitting on the buffet table and
discard anything there two hours or more.
Keep Hot Foods HOT and
Cold Foods COLD
Hot foods should be held at 140 degree Fahr-
enheit or warmer. On the buffet table you can
keep hot foods hot with chafing dishes, slow
cookers and warming trays. Cold foods should
be held at 40 degrees Fahrenheit or colder. Keep
foods cold by nesting dishes in bowls of ice.
Otherwise, use small serving trays and replace
them.
Foodborne Bacteria
Bacteria are everywhere, but a few types es-
pecially like to crash parties. Staphylococcus
aureus, Clostridium perfringens and Listeria
monocytogenes frequent people’s hands and
steam tables. And unlike microorganisms that
cause food to spoil, harmful or pathogenic bac-
teria cannot be smelled or tasted. Prevention is
safe food handling. If illness occurs, contact a
health professional.

Of Lakeview passed away Tues.
Dec.15, 2009 in Cheyenne Wyo-
ming. Tony was born Jan. 2, 1957
to Robert and Elizabeth Perez who
survive him. He is also survived by
his 2 children Tara(Joey) and Bran-
don and 3 grandchildren; Garrett,
McKayla, and Mason, 5 brothers
and sisters: Cory (Mike)Taylor, Anita
(Paul)Rehkopf, Rick(Jody)Perez,
Randy(Stephanie)Perez and Lori
Harrington as well as 8 nieces and
nephews; all of whom loved him
and will greatly miss him. Follow-
ing his graduation from Lakeview
High School he served in the US
Air Force. He then became a very
skilled and dedicated iron worker
for many years. Tony loved his fam-
ily. He also owned several dogs
through the years with which he had
a very special bond. His hobbies
were working on cars and motor-
cycles, body building, He was artisti-
cally talented and he liked to put his
thoughts on paper. Visitation will be
held at Brockway Wesleyan Church
at 10951 3 Mile Road in Morley, MI
from 2-4pm Sun.Dec.20th, with a

Meeting called to order and opened with the Pledge by Supervisor Phyllis Larson.
Members present: Supervisor Phyllis Larson, Clerk Colleen Stebbins, Treasurer
Roy Killinger, Trustee Dan Kanouse, and absent Trustee Jim Radford.
APPROVAL OF THE AGENDA: Motion by Dan, second by Roy to approve the
agenda, voice vote, motion passed.
CLERK REPORT: Stand approved as read.
TREASURER REPORT: Total on hand $88,998.46 with $21,321.25 in the tax
account which will be paid out soon. Stand approved as read.
REPORTS: Assessor Jerrilynn Strong reported 33 building permits this year. The
Board of Review to correct Clerical errors and Mutual Mistakes of Fact will be
December 15, 2009 at 7 p.m.
Jerrilynn stated it has come to her attention that taxpayers have been told by
misinformed individuals that the increase in the amount you PAY TAXES on is
determined by the Township Board.
The FACT is the Township Board does not have this authority. The State of
Michigan mandates the increase multiplier for tax and this multiplier is the same
for EVERYONE in the State of Michigan. This multiplier formula increase is part
of Proposal A.
I am sorry about this misinformation being circulated and hope it helps taxpayers
and the misinformed individuals to understand how the increase in taxes is done.
Fire Department: Fire Chief Bill Knapp reported 2 fire runs this month. Received
grant money of $1,907.00, which is fifty percent cost match to be used on pagers
and hand held radios.
Received a copy of the Montcalm County Fire Departments Mutual Fire Assistance
Agreement approved and signed by the fire service agencies in Montcalm County:
Amble Fire Dept., Belvidere Twp. Fire Dept, Carson City Fire Dept., Coral Fire
Department, Crystal Twp. Fire Dept., Day Twp. Dept., Greenville Public Safety,

NOTICE OF ADOPTION
ZONING ORDINANCE AMENDMENTS
BIG PRAIRIE TOWNSHIP
NEWAYGO COUNTY, MICHIGAN
On December 8, 2009, the Big Prairie Township Board adopted several
amendments to the Big Prairie Township Zoning Ordinance, as amended. The
Big Prairie Township Zoning Ordinance is effective throughout Big Prairie
Township. The following constitutes a summary of those Zoning Ordinance
amendments.
1. A new and additional subsection 311(L) is added regarding replacements
for lawful nonconforming dwellings. This section allows the Planning
Commission to approve, as a special land use, the replacement of an ex-
isting lawful nonconforming dwelling with a new or newer dwelling if
certain requirements are met. This section also specifies various minimum
requirements for such a replacement dwelling.
2. Prior subsection 3.31 (A)(3) of the Zoning Ordinance has been replaced in
its entirety. This new subsection regards the storage and use of recreational
vehicles, tents, and similar items and regulates temporary camping.
3. A new and additional subsection 3.31(A)(6) is added with extensive regu-
lations regarding temporary camping on vacant lands. Such regulations
include time limits, the number of tents or recreational vehicles allowed,
temporary camping permits, authority of the Zoning Administrator, and
other rules and provisions regarding temporary camping on vacant land.
A full copy of the above-mentioned Zoning Ordinance amendments may
be reviewed, inspected, or purchased during normal business hours at the Big
Prairie Township Hall located at 2815 Elm Street, White Cloud, Michigan 49349
or by contacting the Township Clerk at (231) 652-7390. Such amendments to the
Zoning Ordinance will become effective upon the expiration of seven (7) days
after this notice appears in the newspaper. Any questions should be directed to
the Big Prairie Township Clerk.

Michigan Gov. Jennifer M. Granholm has proclaimed October as

“Michigan Car-Deer Crash Safety Awareness Month.”
In Michigan in 2008 there were 61,010 reported car-deer crashes with 12 motorists killed and 1,648
injured. About 80 percent of all car-deer crashes take place on two-lane roads between dusk and dawn.
(Of the reported car-deer accidents Kent County is number one and Montcalm County is number five in
the state’s highest accident rate).
What can you do?
• Stay aware, awake, alert, and sober.
• Remember, safety belts are your best defense in any collision.
• Be alert for deer in spring and fall, especially at dawn and dusk.
• Heed deer crossing and speed limit signs, particularly on two-lane roads.
If a crash is unavoidable:
• Don’t swerve!
• Brake firmly
• Hold on to the steering wheel.
• Stay in your lane.
• Bring you vehicle to a controlled stop.
