MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT
Floridas seaports compete directly with the
likes of Georgia, Alabama and South
Carolina. Floridas seaport authorities work
hard at attracting new business and
improving the flow of commerce to our
states 14 deepwater ports. Collectively, the
seaports have seen a net increase in cargo
volume and cruise ship passengers; and in 2013 alone, Floridas harbor pilots handled
nearly 28,000 ship movements with 2014 ship movements estimated to be nearly the
same.

Seaport improvement projects are underway in Jacksonville, Cape Canaveral and Miami,
to name a few. And, our harbor pilots are a valuable resource for these projects, as we
are consulted for our specialized waterside expertise for various dredging plans and
terminal build-outs.

All 100 of Floridas harbor pilots continue to provide the safest and most reliable pilot
service for incoming and outgoing vessels. Cruise lines, cargo ships and tanker operators
are the end-users of this essential service whenever their ships are operating in our state
waters. And, they all recognize the need to have local, qualified harbor pilots handling
their ships and keeping Floridas seaports safe and open for business.

In 2013 and 2014, new harbor pilot trainees began their training programs around the
state and more will arrive next year. Harbor pilots traveled nationally and internationally
for continuing professional development and pre-operational training for new and unique
vessels.

The Florida Harbor Pilots Association (FHPA) is doing its part in promoting a
competitive pool of harbor pilot candidates that is broad, thoroughly trained and diverse.
Becoming a harbor pilot is a career track, and as such, the FHPA awards scholarships to
select students at Maritime Academies, and even local high schools, to give them
exposure and access to a career at sea.

Floridas harbor pilots continue to do what we do best keeping Floridas seaports
efficient and safe.
