Cross country leads to
active body and mind
By Carson Goins
Some people think running is
boring, but not cross country
runners. They participate in this
sport for the thrill and competi-
tion.
In discussing what goes on in
their minds with the Rock Port
High School Cross Country
team members, I learned that
many runners have a close re-
lationship with God. While at
a Cross Country meet, a runner
told me that there is no one to
talk to while youre running,
but there is always God. If
youre really good at this dif-
fcult sport, you start thinking
about how you got this ability.
What do other people think
about when running? Rock Port
teachers who were also cross
county runners when they were
students shared a variety of re-
sponses. Sixth grade teacher
Donald Parsons said, I thought
about how much I hated it and
hoped it was over. Rachel
Jenkins, middle school science
teacher, said her thoughts were
along the lines of, How far to
the fnish? and Where is the
next hill? Fourth grade teacher
Stacy Walker said she thought
about where the fnish line was.
Now the students of Rock Port
who participate in Cross Coun-
try think a little differently. Ju-
nior Ty Jones said he thinks,
How much it hurts and how I
need to go faster.
Freshman Evan Elam thinks
about fnishing strong, while
senior Trevor Holmes said he
thinks about being almost done.
Girls runners have similar
thoughts: I think about how
I am doing in the race and my
position, junior Jade Lemmon
said. Hannah Mace, sopho-
more, said that she sings songs
while she is running.
No matter what these athletes
think about during their races,
they all think about sectionals,
which is November 1 at West
Platte. Good luck to these ath-
letes who have dedicated physi-
cal and mental effort to repre-
sent the Rock Port Blue Jays
winning tradition.

race at Tarkio October 14.

their Tarkio race.

Nutritional Building Blocks
Fiber is Important!

One of the goals of the new Healthy Kids
Act is to increase the amount of fiber in
kids diets. Fiber is the part of a plant your
body cant absorb. Insoluble fiber (from wheat,
vegetables, nuts, etc.) helps move materials through
the digestive system keeping it healthy. Soluble fiber
(from oats, beans, and some fruits) helps lower
cholesterol and slows the absorption of sugar into
the blood. So fiber is important in fighting both heart
disease and diabetes. It is also a key component in
weight loss, making you feel fuller with fewer calories.
