MESSAGE FROM MRS. KENNAUGH

Our all-school parade will begin at
2:45, with most classes having a
classroom party after the parade.
A few classes may have a
modified party schedule so that
students can attend scheduled
specials classes (art, music, physical education).
Classroom newsletters will have that specific information,
if a change is necessary. Regardless, we look forward to
parading for you all at 2:45!

Here are some guidelines we would like you to consider
when choosing a school-appropriate costume. We believe
these will help to promote a fun, positive climate to the
afternoons activities.
Refrain from gory or excessively scary costumes.
Costumes promoting violence, blood, indecency or
involving weapons are not allowed.
Be original, creative and/or funny.
Hair color may be worn to school that day, but will
not be applied at school.
Masks may be worn, but make-up is discouraged
due to the time and assistance needed to apply it.

As always, if you have any questions or would like to
discuss any concerns, please contact me.

Don't forget to VOTE Tuesday, November 4,
2014. Polls are open 7:00 am to 8:00 pm.
Non-Homestead Millage Renewal
This is a renewal of a millage approved by the
voters in 1995 for 20 years. It has been levied every
year since then. The district has voter approval to
levy 18 mills on Non-Homestead property in 2014
but it expires this year. This is not a new tax and
does not affect a property owner's primary
residence. The Non-Homestead Millage is
required by Proposal A, the state's school funding
structure, in order for Grand Ledge Public Schools
to receive its minimum per pupil foundation
allowance from the state. In order to maintain the
state minimum funding, the voters have to approve
this periodically.
The revenue generated from the 18 Non-Homestead
mills equals almost $7 million, or 16% of the
district's operating budget each year. If this millage
renewal does not pass, the state will NOT replace
the lost funding and Grand Ledge Public Schools
will be forced to substantially reduce, and/or
eliminate, programs and services to offset the
funding loss.
Please Vote on November 4th.
For complete details on the proposal, visit our
Elections page under the Board of Education on our
website: www.glcomets.net.

COUNSELORS CORNER
~Sandy Husted~

This month I have
offered to go into the
classrooms to
empower students to
be active bystanders in bullying prevention. This is
done through stories, videos, art, or discussions.

Bullying almost never happens when adults are
watching. However, it does happen in front of
peers. Many kids, though, dont do anything to stop
the bullying. What they dont realize is when they
see bullying and do nothing; they are unknowingly
giving their support to the bully.

The key then is to get these bystanders to
demonstrate that bullying is not acceptable and its
not cool. If a bullys audience or peers show
disapproval, then the bully will be discouraged from
continuing.
To empower bystanders, it is important to
acknowledge that it might be easier to stand by and
watch (or try to ignore the bullying), but we all
need help sometimes. Students are encouraged to
think how they might feel if they were being
bullied. The strategies taught to the students
include:
Tell a trusted adult (parent, teacher,
counselor, principal, etc.)
Speak up! Say, Stop, leave him/her
alone!
Walk away with the person being bullied
Stand up for others who are being bullied.
They need your help.
Invite those who are being bullied to play
with you somewhere else.
Comfort those who are bullied and tell them
that they didnt deserve to be treated like
that.
The best thing you can do for those who are
bullied is to be their friend.
If it is hard for you to speak up on your own,
ask a friend to do it with you.
