Step 2: Critically analyzing a photograph using Feldman’s Method (30 pts)
Find 5 works by your photographer. You will need to print them off and neatly glue them onto a journal page. Each
work must be labeled with the title and date, high quality and at least 2 x 3 inches. After you have found 5 works, you
must select a single work that you would want to analyze.
- On a second journal page (or on the computer), print out and paste the image you are going to be analyzing. Use feld-
man’s method of art critiquing (described below) to analyze your photograph.
Describe the photograph by identifying the visual characteristics that you see. What is in the photo? What ele-
ments of art is the photographer utilizing? (line, shape, color, value, texture, space).
Analyze the design of the photograph by identifying principles of composition and principles of design. Use the ele-
ments of art that you described above to help justify your argument.
Interpret the photograph by trying to find the meaning of it. Identify how the composition emphasizes the photog-
raphers meaning.
Evaluate the photo deciding on its value. Is it “masterful”? Is it successful in communicating a message? If not, what
could be changed to make it a successful print?
