Edon Offense Stalls, Bombers Lose To Northwood

This is where one of the major issues Edon had came
the ground. The running game did provided both Bomber

touchdowns, as a saving grace.

Perhaps the biggest factor in the game, however, was
depth. Northwood had significantly more bodies on their
sideline than Edon. This game was a decent one in the
first half, with the Bombers going into halftime down 208. The Rangers did more than half of their offensive damage in the second half. Having a larger rotation of players
is a huge advantage, and can determine the outcome of
games.
This loss is not on Edon's defense. They played well,
though there were a few slip ups. No, offense and special
teams had a rough time against Northwood, and played a
bigger role in the defeat. Fatigue may have been the leading factor overall, though.
Edon will continue its Toledo Area Athletic Conference
schedule this week, as they take on Ottawa Hills.

Hilltop Cadets Cant Keep

Pace With Gibsonburg
By T.J. Hug

THE FINAL FRONTIER ... Bomber Senior Cameron Castillo (22), always dangerous with
the ball in space, runs free through the Ranger defense as they give chase. Castillo
weaved his way to a solid gain on the play.

(October 17th, 2014)-GIBSONBURG:

The toast of the Toledo Area Athletic Conference (TAAC), Gibsonburg tends to give
teams more than they can handle during
their games. Hilltop experienced this first
hand on Friday, losing the game 51-7.
Hilltop allowed four touchdowns and
a safety in the first quarter alone, putting
the game out of reach early on. With another score in the second period, and two
more in the third, Gibsonburg pumped
the breaks in the fourth quarter. Hilltop,
meanwhile, got on the board late in the
game, with sophomore quarterback Quinn
Smith connecting with Mikel Burlew for
a 17 yard touchdown with just over four
minutes to go in the game.
The Cadets managed 159 yards of total offense, giving up 495 to Gibsonburg.
Smith himself passes for 179 yards while
going 17 of 37 passing with 1 touchdown
and 4 interceptions. This is a telling stat,
as Hilltop rushed for -20 yards in the
game. This is a legitimate number, as not
one rusher from Hilltop finished the night
with a positive yard on the ground.
Burlew led the team in both receptions
and receiving yards, bringing in 4 balls
for 70 yards. Zack VanDyke also made 4

catches, gaining 33 yards receiving. Quinton Miller had three receptions for 35
yards as well.
Justin Ashenfelter had a busy day, as
Hilltop had to punt 6 times in the matchup. Averaging 25.8 yards per kick, he
totaled 155 yards punting the ball away,
with one of his kicks trapping Gibsonburg
within their own twenty yard line.
Defensively, the Cadets showed some
pride, despite the volume of the loss. Jalen
Towers made 2 tackles for a loss, while
Zack VanDyke and Quinn Smith each
made 1. Quentin Miller also made an interception against Gibsonburg quarterback Ryan Clark.
With Gibsonburg being among the elite
of the TAAC and well beyond it, this loss
shouldn't come as a total surprise. In a
rebuilding year, Hilltop stood little chance
against such a polished team given their
youth. Yet that likely gives little comfort to
the Cadets themselves, who should expect
to win every time they step on the field. If
they approach the game in that manner,
eventually they won't be the only ones who
do so.
Hilltop will next see action this week,
when they travel to Delta in a tough nonconference game.

Indians Gain Revenge On Last

Montpelier Locomotives Lose Years Bryan Loss, Dominate 61-0
CONTINUATION OF FOOTBALL ACTION

On The Road To Archbold

By T.J. Hug
THE VILLAGE REPORTER

(October 17th, 2014)-ARCHBOLD: Despite out gaining the Blue Streaks offensively, Montpelier suffered a 35-13 defeat
at the hands of Archbold on Friday night.
The Locos played keep away with Archbold, holding on to the ball for 31:13 and
running 72 plays in the game. As a point
of comparison, this tactic left the Blue
Streaks with just 16:47 and 34 plays to
move the ball. However, Archbold made
those plays count, averaging 7.6 yards per
snap versus Montpelier's 4.3.
The reason this strategy backfired for
the Locomotives is likely because, with
limited snaps, Archbold decided to focus
almost solely on the running game. In fact,
257 of their 259 yards came on the ground.
It's always risky to be one-dimensional on
offense, but the Montpelier defense has
shown that it struggles to contain the edges, leaving runners to make one guy miss
for big gains on outside running plays.
The Locos also had a productive day
rushing, putting up 197 yards of their own.
Dallas Royer ran for 97 of those yards on
21 carries. Bryce Cooley, who is starting to
work his way into the rotation for Montpelier, gained 52 yards on 10 attempts, also
scoring a touchdown. Quarterback Dylan
Snyder, coming off of his return last week,
struggled a bit running the ball, earning
34 yards on 17 rushes.

Snyder also passed for 115 yards, a

touchdown, and an interception while
completing 8 of his 20 pass attempts. Nate
McCord caught half of said completions,
racking up 72 yards and that touchdown
as well. Jared Lyons made 1 reception fo
23 yards, while Dallas Royer made a 10
yard catch out of the backfield.
With 312 total yards, it was turnovers
that seemed to hinder the Locomotives
scoring, with the team handing Archbold
the ball 3 times. No matter how well an offense is moving the ball, a turnover is a
critical mistake that can render an entire
drive nothing more than a waste of time.
For the Locomotive defense, they didn't
see a lot of work due to the limited number of plays Archbold was able to run. Yet,
when they were on the field, they were decimated by that strong Blue Streak rushing
attack.
One defensive highlight, however, was
Cody Caudill intercepting one of Archbold
quarterback Derek Walker's 4 passes on
the night.
A sound strategy and solid offense
wasn't enough for Montpelier to get by
Archbold. Turnover will ruin just about
any strategy, though.
Montpelier will regroup and travel to
Bryan this week. It will be interesting to
see how each team reacts after their respective losses last Friday.

THE VILLAGE REPORTER

WAUSEON-October 17, 2014 - The

question flying around Wauseon during
the week was "Will we be ready for Bryan
(5-3, 4-2) after a huge win over Delta the
week before?" It is thought that a 61-0
pounding of the Golden Bears answered
the question.
The answer really came on the Indians (6-0, 8-0) first possession. Bryan
was manhandled the entire game by the
Wauseon defense. The Golden Bears first
possession gave them a taste of what their
night would hold. Bryan ran three plays
that netted 0 yards.
Enter the steam rolling Wauseon offense. After an incomplete pass, Nate
Suntken took the handoff from Zac Robinson and rumbled down the southern
sideline for a 63 yard scoring jaunt. Josh
Whitcomb split the uprights and the Indians were 7-0 leaders with 10:19 remaining
in the first quarter.
After a great kickoff by Whitcomb, the
Golden Bears were forced to set up shop
on their own seven yard line.
After two straight runs by Brandon
Dean, who came into the game leading the
league with 917 yards rushing, lost two
yards. Add insult to injury, the Bryan punt
travelled just eight yards.
Again it took the potent Indians offense
very little time to find pay dirt. After an
eight-yard run by Robinson, Jacob Flory
got six with a five yard burst and with that
the Tribe was up 14-0 with still 8:15 to
play in the quarter.
The Indians defense smelled blood
by this point. The strong play of familiar
names like Jacob Raabe, Noah Castle,
Anthony Werder, Jacob Flory and company took over the complexity of the game.
Bryan had yet another three-and-out and
were again forced to punt. The confident
Wauseon offensive eleven came back on
the field to again land an uppercut to the
Golden Bears.

Wauseon took possession on their own

29-yard line. Between Robinson, Suntken
and throw in a 12-yard run by Mason Creager, the Tribe were in the end zone for
the third time of the opening 12 minutes.
Robinson finished the 12-play 71 yard
drive with a two yard plunge. A kick from
Whitcomb and the Indians built a 21-0
lead with still 1:45 left.
As not to slow down their assault,
Wauseon would rack up 27 more points
during the second quarter. Robinson delivered the ball on runs of three and 18
yards, then found a well covered Jacob
Newlove with just three ticks remaining in
the half. Nate Suntken scored his second
six-pointer of the game with a one yard
plunge. The only thing that bothered Bryan, as the half came to an end, was the fact
that they would have to endure 24 more
minutes of this beating. Wauseon went to
the locker room a 48-0 leader.
"Our group of seniors remembered all
week about our contest against Bryan last
season," coach Travis Cooper commented.
Last year, on a questionable extra point
call, Bryan ended the Indians hope for a
league title and undefeated season falling
to the Golden Bears 28-27.
Wauseon added 13 more points the second half. Scoring for the Indians were Robinson on his fourth TD of the night with
a one-yard sneak, and a score by reserve
running back Dakota Valdez from 11 yards
out.
Statistically Robinson led all runners
carrying the ball 17 times for 145 yards.
Suntken also went over the century mark
with 114 yards on nine carries.
Meanwhile, Bryan certainly felt the
wrath of the league's top defense gaining just 148 total yards including just nine
yards on 24 rushing attempts.
Liberty Center and Evergreen stand between Wauseon from an unbeaten season
(first since 1994) and the NWOAL championship (first since 2007).

Stryker Loses Road Match To Edon Bombers Drop Sectional

Hicksville In Sectionals Opener Match Against Rival Edgerton

(October 16th, 2014)-HICKSVILLE: It

was a tough draw for the Lady Panthers.
Traveling to Hicksville for their first
round of sectionals action, the Stryker girls
knew their opponent would be a tough one.
The Lady Aces came into the match boasting a 17-5 record for their regular season,
and the atmosphere on their home court
was sure to be electric.
Indeed it was, and the home court advantage proved even more difficult to fight
through than usual for the Panthers. Right
away, they struggled, losing the first set
11-25. Putting game 1 out of their collective mind, the Lady Panthers put everything they had into game 2. Their effort

was noble, yet they still fell short 21-25

for the set. In one last comeback attempt,
Stryker tried to rally late in the third set.
It wasn't quite enough, however, as they
dropped the set 15-25, effectively ending
their season.
With 4 kills, sophomore Brooke Whitlock played respectably in her first appearance in tournament play for the Panthers.
Teammate Allie Frisbie set things in motion for Stryker with 8 kills to go along with
her 1 ace. Audra Rupp also contributed
an ace to the team's effort, also making 2
kills. Fellow Lady Panther Brittany Breier
added 3 kills in the loss as well.

(October 16th, 2014)-EDON: It's the

stuff from which legends are made.
Playing a hated rival in post-season
play, where the stakes are so much higher,
adds a whole new dimension to tournament action. This very scenario came to be
when Edon was pitted against the neighboring Bulldogs of Edgerton. Of course,
the five-set battle in which the two teams
engaged late in the regular season, which
saw the Lady Bombers successfully invade
Edgerton's home court, also brought another element of intensity to the match.
Out for revenge, the Lady Bulldogs
wasted little time in making themselves at
home in the Bomber's hanger, taking game
1 25-14. The Edon girls rebounded in the
second game, leading to an epic back and
forth affair that seemed as though it would
never end. It did, however, and the Bombers came away with a 32-30 victory. Nei-

ther side relented in the third set, as each

side wrestled for control of the match. It
was the Lady Bulldogs who earned the
advantage, winning the game 25-21 to
take a 2-1 lead in the series. Game 4 saw
a depleted Bomber squad struggle. They
lost the set 12-25, suffering the pain of
not only ending their season, but allowing
their most hated of foes to advance in the
tournament as well.
Three of Edon's four seniors had strong
performances in their final outing representing the royal blue and gray. Kaitlin
Chrisman provided 10 kills and 10 digs for
the Bombers. Fellow senior Alex Kiess led
the team in assists with 23, also making 6
digs and 4 kills on the evening. Meanwhile,
Nicole Newell had 18 digs and 11 kills in
a herculean effort for Edon, leading the
Bombers in both statistical categories.

Lady Blackbirds Power Past

Hilltop's Season Ends In Antwerp North Central In Sectional Semis
CONTINUATION OF VARSITY VOLLEYBALL ACTION

(October 16th, 2014)-ANTWERP: The

Cadets went down fighting, completely
surrounded by Archers.
With a packed crowd cheering for their
hometown Antwerp squad, the girls of Hilltop had more than the other six girls on
the court with which to contend. As such,
the match against the Archers was a difficult challenge for the Lady Cadets. Even
still, Hilltop gave it their all, battling valiantly in a foreign environment against a
strong opponent.
Game 1 provided a slow start for the
Lady Cadets, who were defeated 14-25 in
the set. Despite a redoubled effort, they
lost game 2 by that same score, 14-25.

The fourth set saw Hilltop refuse to lose

however, and they took the set 25-23. They
couldn't complete the comeback, though.
The Archers pulled away late in game 4,
taking the set and the match 25-17. As a
silver lining to the loss, every girl on that
Cadet team will be back to play next year,
as there were no seniors playing for Hilltop
this season.
Ariana Brown stood out for the Cadets
with 8 kills, 7 digs, and 2 blocks. Felicity
Jackson gave her team a boost with 11 assists, 4 kills, 3 digs, and an ace. Teammate
Allie Schmitt gave the team an impressive
21 digs on the night as well.

(October 16, 2014)PETTISVILLE- The

age old saying goes something like this;
Its hard to beat a team three times in the
same year. While that statement often
holds true, it wasnt the case in the Sectional Semi-final encounter between BBC
foes Pettisville and North Central.
The Blackbirds, who completed the conference schedule unscathed with a record
of 10-0, had to fend off a determined effort
from the Lady Eagles. However, the hosts
were able to defeat their league counterparts in three games.
In game one, Pettisville jumped out to a
substantial early lead. Behind solid serving and attacking, and some serving errors
by the Eagles, the Blackbirds cruised to a
25-10 victory.
The three minute break between games
appeared to allow North Central to compose themselves as they jumped out to 3-1
lead in game two. However, Pettisville responded to the Eagle run and then some
behind some solid hitting and defense
running off 12 unanswered points to build
13-3 advantage. The two teams battled
back and forth for the rest of game two,
but numerous successful attacks by the
trio of Jordyn Pursel, Dana Fricke, and
Amber Klopfenstein were too much for
North Central to counter as the Blackbirds
took the game by a final of 25-13.
With Pettisville just one win away from
advancing to the Sectional final, North
Central wasnt about to give up without a
fight. The exchange of points that ended
game two started over in game three. North
Central clawed and scratched their way to
a 12-11 lead, only to see Pettisville run off
five straight to take a 16-12 advantage.
The trading of points occurred once again
with the Blackbirds finally moving just one
point away from the Sectional final as the
scoreboard read 24-16. The Eagles scored
two consecutive points, but inevitably the
Blackbirds got the one they needed to
down North Central and win the final game
of the match 25-18.
Following the contest Pettisville Head
Coach John Horning shared his thoughts.
The girls have worked very hard this season and it has been a lot of fun to see them
improve and grow as a team. I thought we
played very solid defensively and serving
93% is a good number for us. I felt we kept
ourselves in a lot points with good hustle
and decisions. I also like the fact we got a

lot of good touches at the net defensively.

Although very happy with the win, Horning was not content with all facets of the
Blackbirds performance. We need to be a
little more consistent attacking at the net
with our setters and hitters. I also think
our communication needs to be stronger
and more consistent.
With the win Pettisvilles record moves
to 18-5 overall. Up next for the Blackbirds
are the Edgerton Bulldogs who downed
Edon. When asked about his teams opponent for the Sectional final, Horning
shared. We played Edgerton over a month
ago in a tri-match at Liberty Center. We
won in two very competitive games with
scores of something like 25-21 and 25-19.
I know we have improved quite a bit since
then and would assume Edgerton has
too. Karen (Meister) always has her teams
ready to compete and they also hustle all
over the floor. We will need to bring our "A"
game to be successful Saturday night.
Once again Pettsiville was led by the
dynamic senior duo of Fricke and Pursel.
Fricke ended the night with a solid stat
line of 13 kills, 3 aces, and 13 digs. Pursel
was equally impressive accumulating 15
kills, 2 aces and 15 digs, while Klopfenstein added 5 more kills to the total. Kate
Kauffman made many of the kills possible
as the junior setter was a perfect 32-32
setting with 20 assists. Carly Bontrager
contributed to the number of successful
hits as she finished 14-14 setting with 10
assists. Teagan Kauffman added 12 digs
and 3 aces, while libero Stephanie Hubby
filled her roll of defensive specialist admirably by adding 15 digs.
Although coming out on the short end
on the scoreboard, North Central, whose
season comes to an end at 1-22 overall
has nothing to be ashamed of after the
effort put forth in the match. Eagle Head
Coach Stacy Roth shared her feelings.
Even though the record doesnt show it,
the Lady Eagles have fought hard and have
come along way this season. Good job ladies!
Sophomores Makayla Hayes and Alyssa Swank led North Central with a pair of
kills, with Hayes adding 4 blocks. Senior
libero Macayla Wildrick held down the
back row with 7 digs, while classmate Rachel Oxender had 7 good serves for North
Central.

PREPARATION IS THE KEY ... Veronica Roth (9) lays in wait for the ball is it rapidly

a counterattack.

NICE AND EASY ... Lady Blackbird Dana Fricke (14) uses a gentler approach to confuse
North Central Sophomore Makayla Hayes.

TRACKING SKILLS AT WORK ... Lady Cadet Allie Schmitt (1) follows the ball down the
line of the net after it took an unexpected bounce. The Hilltop Junior will hit the ball
behind her, so that her teammates can continue the play.

ABSORBING THE IMPACT ... Fricke (14) puts some serious velocity on the ball as she
hits it toward Lady Eagle Makayla Hayes (9) in an effort to get the ball past her. Hayes
timed her counter perfectly, however, and successfully blocked the spike.

BATTLE STATIONS! ... Baylee Schmitt (3) and Ariana Brown (8) rise to the occasion as
the Archers send a ball of high trajectory toward the Lady Cadet portion of the court.
The duo of Hilltop girls serve as the first line of defense for their team.

Fayette Drops Sectionals

Montpelier Locomotive Rally Match To Cardinal Stritch
CONTINUATION OF VOLLEYBALL ACTION

Against Holgate Falls Short

(October 16th, 2014)-HOLGATE: The

Locomotives from Montpelier run on heart,
not coal.
That heart was on display when the
Lady Locos traveled to Holgate to take on
the hometown Tigers in Sectionals play.
After a rough regular season, Montpelier
had every reason to simply go through the
motions and gear up for next year. After
falling behind early against Holgate, lesser
teams might have done just that.
But not Montpelier.
Holgate pulled away in the middle of
the first set, earning a solid 25-16 victory
over the Locomotives. Regrouping, Montpelier readied itself for a battle in game 2.
Yet they still suffered a tough 20-25 loss
in the set. With their season about to be
finished, the Locos responded. With poise

and passion, they claimed a close game

3 25-18. Holgate redoubled their efforts,
hoping to close the match out in game 4.
The girls from Montpelier would have none
of it, however, earning a narrow 25-23 victory to force a final set. Sadly, the comeback fell just short of success, as the Lady
Locos found themselves on the wrong side
of a very close 17-19 score in game 5.
Seniors Christy Duchene and Sidney
Houk were hustling all night, giving their
team 38 and 31 digs, respectively. Houk
also added 12 digs and 4 assists, while
Duchene contributed 6 assists and 1
kill. Hannah Blake had another balanced
match, making 15 kills, 15 assists, and 12
digs. Landri McKelvey also had 15 assists
to go along with her 5 aces on the evening.

(October 16th, 2014) - CARDINAL

STRITCH: A late rally wasn't enough to get
Fayette back into the match.
Getting off to a slow start is tough to
come back from. Doing so on the road in
the post-season, is nearly impossible to
achieve. So when Fayette fell behind early
at Cardinal Stritch, they were fighting an
uphill battle, to say the least. They tried
to get back into the match, however, and
their efforts didn't go unnoticed.
After dropping the first set 13-25, the
Lady Eagles lost game 2 as well, 10-25.

Stepping up in game 3, however, Fayette

dominated the set 25-13. They couldn't
build on that momentum, though. Cardinal Stritch took control of game 4 early,
and never looked back. Fayette lost the set
8-25, allowing Stritch to move on to the
Sectionals Finals.
Michaela Bates led the Fayette with 6
kills, 3 digs, and a block. With 11 digs, 10
assists, and an ace, Hannah Machacek
had a strong game as well. Fellow Lady
Eagle McKenzee Schaffner once again hustled all night, earning 20 digs in the match.

PHOTOS BY ANGI WALKUP, STAFF

I GOT IT! ... Lady Loco Senior Christy Duchene dives to dig the ball, refusing to let it
touch the ground. Duchene had 38 digs in the match.

PHOTOS BY TIMOTHY KAYS, STAFF

HERE IT COMES ... Fayette Senior Ceairia Keller (7) is about to unleash an attack on
the Cardinal Stritch side of the court, with a lone defender in her way.

A WALL OF LOCOMOTIVES ... Montpelier Senior Baylee Hageman and Sophomore Caitlyn Nixon (6) elevate to block the assault on their territory by a Tiger attacker.

INCOMING! ... Lady Eagles Hannah Machacek (13) and Jessie Wheeler (23) look back
as the Cardinal Stritch offering sails behind them, their attempts to block its passage
failing. Theyre hopeful that one of their teammates in the back row will be able to dig
the ball for them.

BLOCK PARTY! ... Audrey Pirtle (8) and a teammate each get a piece of an attempted
spike from Holgates number 12. The two Locomotives timed their jumps perfectly and
were waiting for the Tiger attack when it commenced.

CONTINUATION OF VOLLEYBALL ACTION

Pettisville Blackbirds Dominate

Edgerton, Moves On To Districts
(October 18th, 2014)-PETTISVILLE: It
may have been a rematch, but Edgerton
had no idea into what they were walking.
Pettisville had played the Lady Bulldogs
earlier in the year, as part of a tri-match.
The Lady Blackbirds won that match
in straight sets, though both were hard
fought. Edgerton was expecting a different
result when they trekked to Pettisville's
home court in the Sectionals Finals.
And they got a different result, just not
the one for which they were hoping.
The Lady Blackbirds controlled the series, winning all three games convincingly.
Game 1 was a 25-13 victory for the home
team. Edgerton really struggled in game

2, losing the set 10-25. The Lady Bulldogs

had a heroic run in game 3, with the Pettisvile girls a single point away from winning the match. Edgerton responded by
firing off several points in a row and refusing to let the ball touch the court. They
couldn't keep it up all night, however, and
the Blackbirds eventually won the set 2516.
Jordyn Pursel had an incredible match
for Pettisville, making 22 digs, 12 kills, and
5 aces. Teammate Dana Fricke added an
astounding 18 kills and 4 blocks, as well
as 5 digs. Kate Kauffman managed 28 assists, 7 digs, 5 kills, 3 aces, and a block in
the win.

Wauseon Takes Down Wapakaneta

In Four Sets, Advances To Districts
(October 18th, 2014)-WAUSEON: With
twenty-six aces made by the team, the
Lady Indians were able to overcome a game
1 loss to take the next three sets.
After enjoying a first round bye, earned
by a strong season by the Wauseon girls,
they hosted Wapakaneta in the Sectionals Finals on Saturday. The match-up was
a good one, as both teams played pretty
evenly throughout the night. The Lady Indians showed a propensity for closing out
matches that the visiting team did not,
however, which made all the difference.
Having said that, Wapakaneta did
take a tight game 1 25-23, taking the initial lead in the series. That wouldn't last,

though. Wauseon came back in game 2,

pulling away late to win the set 25-20.
Game 3 was more of the same, as the Indians again claimed a 25-20 victory. Game
4 saw the Lady Indians again closed out
a determined Wapakaneta team, earning a
25-19 win.
Thanks to her 17 digs, 7 kills, and 7
aces, Wauseon's Kierra Fountain was a
major factor in the match. Hayley Chamberlain added 17 assists and 2 blocks for
the Lady Indians.Sariah Yackee contributed 21 digs and 3 aces in the victory as well.
The win advances the girls of Wauseon
into districts.

PHOTOS BY T.J. HUG, STAFF

ALL IN GOOD TIME ... Pettisville Senior Jordyn Pursel patiently lets the ball come to
her, instead of rushing towards it, showing the poise that only experience can bring.

PHOTOS BY BILL BRAY, STAFF

SMACK IT BACK ... Kallie Strauss shows some determination in delivering a hard return.

MY TURN ... Kate Kauffman (12), a junior for Pettisville goes above the net to send the
ball Edgertons way. Kauffman is used to setting up her teammates for such tasks, making 28 assists in this game alone, but has been known to make a few kills herself from
time to time.

JUMPING FOR IT ... Kierra Fountain was 32 of 38 hitting with 7 kills during the match.
